But the highlight of the hols had to be Len Deighton’s Violent Ward.Based on my past Deighton encounters I was expecting more spy thriller stuff, but was pleasantly disconcerted to meet up with narrator/protagonist Mickey Murphy, a jaded tough-guy Irish lawyer cruising the mean streets of Los Angeles in the early 1990s.The novel kicks off with typical Deighton directness: “‘There’s a woman sitting on my window ledge,’ I said quietly and calmly into the phone.” In vivid strokes we are painted a scene— seedy of?ce on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood, attitudinous Tcherman secretary, frosted glass partitions and worn furniture, and our inimitable narrator/protagonist, huddled under his desk, hoping that this latest crisis will somehow blow over.We subsequently learn that the window-ledge woman is in fact Betty, Mickey’s ex, who is simply trying to embarrass him and, if possible, extract more support money. Why on earth Mickey does not mention this from the get-go is anyone’s guess, but this sets a pattern for what is to follow. You see, in Mickey Murphy, Len Deighton brings the concept of “unreliable narrator” to a whole new level.Mickey seems to have been affected by years of exposure to low-lifes and criminals—clients who, as he puts it, “would plead the Fifth Amendment if they could count that high”.So, here is a character—and a narrator—who is congenitally incapable of truth, honesty, or even straight answers.Add to that a perpetually curmudgeonly disposition and a great capacity for self-deception and you have the Statler and Waldorf [The Muppet Show] of all narrators.Following the plot is like chasing a shaggy dog down a rabbit hole. So, what gives?Trouble.Mickey is a trouble magnet, and he is surrounded by an ill-star-studded cast of potential trouble makers, and they all want a piece of him.His Korean law partner specializes in illegal immigration papers and false identities, and is in league with an evangelical type who traf?cs in bodies.Murphy’s clients include an aging actor who is trying to revive a ?agging career (and procure an illegal ?rearm); an older patriarch who specializes in dodgy real estate deals; an old ?ame (smokin’) who lives in fear of being murdered by her husband (and, by the way, has Mickey wrapped around her wee ?nger); and an old school pal who has parlayed all manner of illicit activities into multi- millions and is muscling in on Mickey’s criminal law practice. And these are just the main characters.Throughout, Deighton provides deft, vivid sketches of all the schemers and mis?ts—from cabbies to ?re?ghters—who make up the circus-like social fabric of West Hollywood. In terms of setting, the reader can tell that Deighton was a) trained as an artist/illustrator and (b) has experience in the ?lm and television industries. As Mickey narrates his own tale he may play fast and loose with the truth, but he is very precise, almost poetic, in rendering the minutiae of his surroundings. What emerges, through the interweaving of seemingly irrelevant scenic details, is a seamless and believable world which brings the unfolding drama into high relief.Another interesting aspect of Mickey’s character is that he is chip-on-shoulder underdog throughout. In the great buffeting of adversity he is far more often buffetee than buffeter. This is in line with Deighton’s typical protagonists who are generally lower-class disrupters, characters who defy the conventions of bourgeois or nobility, make up their own rules, and get kicked around as a result.Re: the title, the epigraph to the novel reads, “If America is a lunatic asylum then California is the Violent Ward”.This assertion captures the essence of the novel, for violence and irrationality seem to frame every scene. As the drama of the novel intensi?es, the Rodney King affair provides an uneasy counterpoint. In the background, there are constant reminders in snippets of conversations and news reports that the police of?cers who beat King are on trial.Their exoneration occurs as the story is drawing to a close and the surprising and dramatic conclusion plays out against an L.A.overwhelmed by violence, ?ames, and chaos. This is the one and only Mickey Murphy novel by Deighton. You will be pleased to know that a copy is to be had in the Lennoxville Library.Library News The English Language book discussion, “Books and Brown Bags” meets every second Wednesday at 12 p.m.on Zoom. The next meeting is Sept 29.The French “Club de Lecture” meets monthly. The next meeting is Sept 23 at 9:30 a.m.at the library. The ?rst meeting of our monthly Book Club for kids 6-12 and their families is Sept 29 at 6 p.m.Kids ages 3-6 are invited to join us every Saturday at 10:30 a.m.for a storytime and craft activities. Our next “Literary Ramble” with Poet-in- Residence, Steve Luxton will be held Sept 26 in North Hatley and will focus on life and work of Townships Poet D.G.Jones.All activities are free and open to Library members.Library membership is FREE for Sherbrooke residents and available at a modest cost for non-residents.Contact the library for more details or to sign up.L.A.law—Deighton style! hundreds of people gather, there’s a lot of people who come and give $10, $20, or $100, and we missed out on that revenue last year, so that did hurt us.” By Michael Boriero The Terry Fox Run is scheduled to take place on Sept.19, however, due to the ongoing pandemic, communities in the Eastern Townships organizing the nationwide event will once again be forced to go to a virtual platform.Last year, both Richmond and Lennoxville, who handle the annual fundraiser in the region, ran the event online, asking people to avoid heading out in large crowds, and instead sticking to close family and friends in their respective neighbourhoods.Terry Fox Foundation Provincial Director Peter Sheremeta told The Record that he witnessed a 13 per cent decrease in donations in 2020, compared to 2019, which he chalks up as a win, given the circumstances. And he is already seen an increase this year across Quebec.“The vast majority of communities are going virtual again this year, so that’s what’s happening. Now, I don’t know how it’s going to go, but I can say that as of two days ago, we were up 30 per cent as compared to this point last year in the province in the communities,” he said.According to Sheremeta, the foundation left it in the hands of each community to decide whether they wanted to hold a small in-person event or not, basing it off the measures established by their local health authority. But most have opted to go virtual.Richmond’s organizer Joe Kelly said it will look identical to last year.It is an individual effort, he explained, so people are expected to map out their own walks or runs.He is also selling t-shirts as part of the fundraiser, and several people are collecting bottles and cans.He also mentioned that the Wales Home, a retirement facility in the area, held a carpet bowling fundraiser for the foundation because of construction work on their grounds. His sister, a cancer survivor, lives there, and the fundraiser has always been close to his heart.“My dad died of cancer, two brothers died of cancer, one sister died of cancer, and then I have a sister at the Wales Home here, she is a survivor, and I have a sister in New York who is also a survivor, and I have a brother in Victoria and this is his fourth case of cancer,” he said.Sheremeta added that he was blown away last year by the population’s generosity. While thousands suffered due to COVID-19, they continued to contribute to the foundation. However, he also noted that it was dif?cult to raise funds, since most people donate on-site.“It affected us,” said Sheremeta.“Usually on the day of the Terry Fox Run, an event where hundreds of people gather, there’s a lot of people who come and give $10, $20, or $100, and we missed out on that revenue last year, so that did hurt us.” But he was proud of what the foundation accomplished last year. They were still able to raise cancer awareness, and if anything, Sheremeta believes most Canadians now understand the importance of scienti?c advancement. He hopes people will consider the bigger picture.“We can’t bring back the ones we’ve lost, but we can save other loved ones in the future, and again, we’ve seen the value of science this past year and half.Let’s keep advancing science, and let’s beat this disease,” he said.Richmond and Lennoxville combined for $11,558.70 in 2020, while they were able to raise $16,728.90 in 2019.There is no expectation to beat last year’s numbers, but Sheremeta is con?dent. The region’s schools are a different story, raising $9,281 in total.Bishop’s College School Director of Athletics Jeff Bray said they were advised to keep the event in-house.Students and staff will be able to take part in a short walk or run, however, and he has already gathered quite a few donations heading into the weekend.“In terms of fundraising, obviously I get updates regularly from the Terry Fox Foundation and this morning I think we’re up to somewhere around $750 or $760 raised already online, and our run site is QC1177,” Bray said on Thursday morning.According to Bray, the school was able to generate about $3,000 in donations last year.He has set a goal of $2,000 this year.He added that people can donate via terryfox.org.Although Covid knocked them back, Bray is steadfast in his mission to raise cancer awareness.“We want to continue his Marathon of Hope, we want to continue raising awareness and funds for cancer research and everything that we can do obviously is going to make a difference,” said Bray.Gail Klinck, a teacher, and Terry Fox Run organizer, at Massey-Vanier High School, told The Record that the school will be holding its event on Oct.14.The plan is to parade down to town hall, where they will be greeted by Mayor Sylvie Beauregard.Massey-Vanier was also selected to represent Quebec’s schools on the Terry Fox national website, she explained with pride, the foundation chooses one school from every province. While it is their ?rst virtual run event, she said donations are already ?owing in.“We just started and I just checked and we’re at about $800,” Klinck shared.“It’s a good start, I feel good, we only started, I mean, this is less than a week, so I have a really good feeling about this.” Terry Fox Run stays virtual for second year in a row COURTESY By Gordon Lambie The project to reinvent the St.Pat’s camp in Stoke as a retreat and training centre for para-athletics is dead in the water following con?ict between the Fondation Papillion and the municipality over a gravel pit located on the property.According to Jean Fabi, a partner and principal fundraiser for the initiative, the crux of the issue relates to the matter of royalties from the use of the gravel. The gravel pit, installed on the site between 2002 and 2005 by a construction company as a part of a previous attempt to sell the land, was in the way of the training centre project.Recognizing the stone as something that has value, Fabi said that the foundation made an arrangement with the contractor in charge of creating the site’s new access road to trade 257,000 tonnes of gravel for the work, an agreement that that they understood to be royalty free.“We wanted to be totally transparent,” Fabi said, explaining that the agreement was made with the knowledge of the municipality, and with regular tonnage reports being made to the local council.Where Fabi said that he believed that the municipality had initially agreed that an exchange of gravel for services rendered would eliminate those royalties, the Mayor, Luc Cayer, argued that the council was always expecting the money.“You can take gravel and move it around your own property as much as you like,” Cayer said, “but as soon as you sell it to someone else, there is monetary compensation that is owed to the municipality.” Based on the amount of gravel moved, however, Fabi said that the foundation couldn’t afford the fee. This past summer, the municipality offered a compromise solution, wherein they would buy part of the camp’s beach for use as a public waterfront, but Fabi said that inviting the public on to the site to use the beach interfered with the foundation’s vision of providing a refuge where young people with disabilities wouldn’t have to worry about the judgement of others.“We wanted the disabled people to feel at home,” he said.“It was going to be their private club, if you will.” Fabi said that the foundation offered some alternative locations, but according to Cayer, the options offered were essentially unusable. In conversation with The Record, the Mayor said that the Fondation Papillon never made a counter offer, and the next thing he heard was that the project was cancelled and the land would be sold.Fabi, meanwhile, told The Record that the beach offer from Stoke was presented as non-negotiable, leaving the foundation feeling like they had no other choice but to sell. The mayor called the foundation’s decision to sell disappointing given the value that the project would have brought to the community, but ultimately he argued that it was the foundation’s decision.“There is no guilty party here,” he said.Asked about whether Stoke will consider buying the land in order to get the beach access anyway, Cayer said that the community has right of ?rst refusal and will think about the possibility.Fabi, meanwhile, pointed out that Stoke sent the foundation a bill for the money owed on the gravel.“How did that happen?” He said, adding that although the focus of the foundation is not to ?ght city hall, they will if they have to.“We’re all extremely sad, because we all worked so hard,” Fabi said, adding that the idea of a legacy for the St.Pat’s Old Boys is going to be transferred to a residence project in Montreal. The original project for the Stoke site involved a merger between the St.Pat’s Old Boys and the Société pour les enfants handicapés du Québec (now known as the Fondation Papillon) in 2014.The association of former students of the St.Patrick’s Academy in Sherbrooke formed a partnership with the foundation with the idea of transforming what had become a derelict legacy into something unique and special for children in need.“The camp was nothing but a piece of land in the end that was sometimes rented out to various groups,” Fabi said, noting that the St.Pat’s Old Boys camp was in operation from 1948 to 1995.“That’s why we had plans to do something that was really pertinent to our mission of helping people with disabilities.” St.Pat’s Camp project is no more PRINTED AND Richmond Rock Forest, Windsor, Stanstead, Ayer s Cliff Serving the community for over 100 years and still counting! One column, four voices Open to the Spirit Today’s word: Autumn By Revs Mead Baldwin, Rabbi Boris Dolin Lee Ann Hogle, and Rev.Carole Martignacco 1) As a child, I often wondered what kind of magical clock was hiding inside of the trees in my front yard.Every year as autumn approached, and as the weather began to cool and the days became shorter, the colors of the leaves on the trees began to change. The bright green palate of colors turned to the oranges, reds and yellows of this new season, and I always loved the surprises that this mix of leaves would bring.Of course, when the leaves began to change on the trees, that also meant that I was starting school again, and that in just a few months, the snow would start to fall. How did the trees know to go through this process? Was it something in the light, the air, or maybe an inner timer that let them know that it was time to move on?I learned later on in life, that while it wasn’t necessarily magic, the tree did have a clock of sorts which let them know that autumn was coming. Most trees have the ability to sense when the days are getting shorter, when less light is ?owing from the sun to the leaves, and they start putting more energy into preparing for winter, and less into staying green. The colors change as the energy ?ows from the leaves and into the places where this energy is most needed. We too begin to change during this season. We too move our energy to new places during this time.Like the trees, this is when we start to gather our energy for the upcoming winter, but also to take some time to re?ect on the light, the joy and the connections of summer. This year, we once again are headed into what may be another dif?cult winter, and we can use this time, this holy time, to move forward with intention, and maybe also to change our perspective. The colors we produce this year by the lives we live may be different than we are used to, but like the leaves on the trees, if we live with intention, it will all be beautiful.2) September 22-23 is the Autumn Equinox this year, marking the time when the sun is exactly above as it crosses the Equator on its way south for its annual visit.Day and night will be however brie?y equal, twelve hours each of light and darkness. You can hear it coming in the rustling of the ?rst drying leaves.Already we can feel it in the air.Last week driving through lush green trees, one ?aming red branch stood out starkly among the rest like a ?ag announcing – cold is coming. The colour guard will soon be changing. Now mornings on the deck require a sweater, and I’m already eying which plants to rescue, which to repot for the long winter indoors. As one who loves orange to the point of obsession, this is my favourite season. When leaves give their last hurrah in an outrageous explosion of ?aming red, orange, gold, yellow amongst the backdrop of ever greens and brown. It’s as if against the coming cold Earth is throwing all the warmth she can muster. This is the time of thanksgiving.Soon will come the gratitude rituals of the year, gathering in the harvest to can, dry and freeze, preserving and replenishing summers bounty.Outdoor markets are over?owing, zucchini and squash of many shapes and kinds are everywhere.A visit to the local apple orchard is in order.Yes, I love autumn. And when it’s here in all its glory I’ll welcome and revel in it.Yet every year I feel a bittersweet tug at the heart.I’m not yet ready to say goodbye to summer’s warmth.“Try to remember that time in September” as the song goes, when life was teetering on the turn of the wheel of the year.Right now I am drinking in as much blossoming beauty as I can, trying to gather ?owers and seeds in memory for the cold to come.3) As the colours begin to change and folks are decorating their front steps with fall coloured mums, I start to hear people telling me that autumn is their favourite season.Indeed there is much to appreciate about this time of the year: the invigorating briskness of the air that seems to spark renewed energy to get things done, prepare the house for winter and maybe start a new hobby.I struggle to ?nd words to describe what this explosion of fall colours evokes in me, but it is something to do with magni?cence, exuberance, and over?owing energy. This year’s foliage is about to expire and yet it goes out in a blaze of glory, offering us encouragement as we look towards the cold winter months we know are coming. This year as we steel ourselves for a fourth wave of Covid-19 and a future less certain than we thought it would be ?ve months ago, let us take encouragement from the trees, offering the very best of ourselves to those around us, acknowledging we have already weathered many a storm in the past and digging deep into our spiritual roots for the strength to persevere.4) I have always loved the Fall season. The changing colours brought a sense of joy and hope as a child.September was the time to go back to school, something I was excited for.We got new clothes, and new school supplies. It meant the end of the summer heat.I got homework again, and new books.Hooray! I never stopped going back to school in autumn till I was 24, and ordained into the ministry.I still remember how strange that ?rst fall seemed.I even took a week of study leave at my old university in late September. My younger brother was studying engineering there so I stayed with him.For a few days I had the joyful fall feeling.Yes, I know I was a total nerd.In church life, September was when all the children returned to Sunday School after a summer break. They could once more ring the bell and light the worship candle.I am aware that there are countries in our world, near the equator, without changing seasons.Hawaii may be beautiful to visit, but I prefer snow, apple blossoms, and fall colours. In a spiritual sense, autumn reminds us that life is full of changes.Trees bud, grow leaves which change colours and eventually fall to the ground and dry up.Life is like that. The author of Ecclesiastes, in the Hebrew Scriptures, puts it this way.“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to harvest what is planted, a time to weep, and a time to laugh, a time to mourn, and a time to dance”.In each season we get a glimpse of divine artistry.Red leaves are a harbinger of days to come, life renewed.May this autumn season give you, our readers, a new hopeful perspective on life. One word, four voices, so how will you enjoy autumn?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rabbi Boris Dolin leads the Dorshei-Emet community in Montreal; Rev.Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer’s Cliff, Magog & Georgeville United Churches; Rev.Carole Martignacco, Unitarian Universalist is retired from ministry with UUEstrie and now around 60,000 voters, based on turn-out at each of the last two elections.Liberal Party of Canada candidate Marie-Claude Bibeau ?rst won the riding in 2015, ousting New Democratic Party MP Jean Rousseau by a margin of just over 5,000 votes. The Bloc Québécois came third and the Conservative Party of Canada had the fourth highest vote count.Things changed signi?cantly in 2019 when Jean Rousseau left the NDP to represent the Green Party of Canada. The votes did not follow him, nor did they remain with the NDP.They shifted to other parties, mainly the Bloc. While Bibeau was able to hold the riding in 2019, it was to a much narrower margin, with the Bloc just 3,100 votes behind. The Conservatives ?nished third, and the NDP dropped to fourth in the race.So where do things stand now? There are eight candidates on the ballot this year in Compton-Stanstead: • Geneva Allen, New Democratic Party • Marie-Claude Bibeau, Liberal Party of Canada • Yves Bourassa, People’s Party of Canada • Nathalie Bresse, Bloc Québécois • Sylvain Dodier, Green Party of Canada • Déitane Gendron, Free Party Canada • Sylvain Longpré, Independent • Pierre Tremblay, Conservative Party of Canada Liberal incumbent Marie-Claude Bibeau, Canada’s ?rst woman to serve as Minister of Agriculture and Agri- Food, is well-known and respected in the riding by both English and French communities, but she may face dissent from voters upset that a snap election was called during a pandemic by party leader Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Also, the one-two punch of provincial Bill 96 threatening the constitutional rights of English-speakers, along with the federal government’s proposed changes to the Of?cial Languages Act, have created an unease among Quebec Anglos that could be re?ected at the polls. While the NDP has had a fair showing in the past two elections in Compton- Stanstead, this year’s candidate, Geneva Allen, has been absent from the campaign trail.Aside from a statement on the NDP website and a history of questionable comments on Twitter, Allen is a candidate in name only.Any What’s to come in frites are at the Casse- Croute.I can’t believe my government has the nerve to try and disguise discrimination as a set of Quebec values, and then suggest most of the population shares that opinion.Like, seriously, beware the dangers of multiculturalism. The next thing you know, we’ll have equity, diversity and then omg wait, no, not inclusion?! Rich white men might have to ?nd other hobbies besides politics.Crying shame really, social engineering is way more fun than golf.Build those walls! Tie those tongues! Put the cheese before the sauce on that poutine! The trouble is, nobody reacts to policies that don’t directly affect them.Well in my book, if you hear a racist joke and say nothing, you may as well have told it.My Take: By Michael Boriero Premier Legault is out here trying to claim the word ‘woke’ now.I mean at this point nothing can really surprise us, right? These past two years have given us a few strange moments.I think the best part is watching Quebec’s politicians engage in a lively discourse over the meaning of the term on social media.Apparently, it means guilt-tripping Quebecers.Yes, Legault took time out of his press conference to clarify that he believes ‘woke’ people are those who make Quebecers feel guilty about defending their values, and nation. He speci?cally mentioned defending Bill 21, you know, the law that bans public servants in positions of authority, like teachers, from wearing visible religious symbols, including hijabs. But listen, if you don’t want people to call out Quebec for being, well, racist, then maybe don’t create laws that are inherently racist and discriminatory. My Take: By Gordon Lambie Francois Legault has been up in arms recently, defending his idea of what values de?ne Quebec as a nation. The ideas he is promoting are not new, but the way he is positioning himself and others in the conversation is dangerous. The Premier insists he is speaking for the majority of Quebecers, and has established himself as a champion who is working to defend against people who “want to make us feel guilty” and who “see discrimination everywhere,” but if enough people are talking about discrimination that it comes up in conversation daily, shouldn’t the people elected to represent everyone at least consider to what is being said?Denial is not the path to a just society, and presenting those who speak up for their rights or the rights of others as enemies of the nation turns already vulnerable populations into targets for further abuse. The format of a My Take is 150 words - no more, no less - to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was Quebec’s values. What is black and white, read all over and serves as a great teaching tool? The newspaper, of course.Teachers can use the newspaper in a number of ways in the classroom to enhance students’ education. They can cut several pieces of art from the paper and have young students just learning to write name them, or clip a feature story from the paper and have older students respond to it in an essay.Whatever the activity, newspapers benefit students. When used in the classroom, they improve students’ reading, writing and critical thinking skills, inspire them to participate in discussions and debates, and expand their knowledge of past, current and future events.RECORD THE The Record welcomes your letters to the editor. Please limit your letters to 300 words. We reserve the right to edit for length, clarity, legality and taste. Please ensure there is a phone number or email where you can be reached, to con?rm authorship and current town/city of residence.Names will not be withheld but the address and phone number of the writer are not published, except by request. Please email your letters to newsroom@ sherbrookerecord.com.Preference is given to writers from the Eastern Townships.PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday, September 17, 2021 Page 7 Star jump Hello readers.Nice to be back — believe me, it’s really nice to be back! I’ve been busy ‘retiring’, or as I like to call it, ‘redirecting my curiosity’.Since retiring, I’d been weighing my options about where I would like my life to go.I knew it was time to step down as CEO of an amazing children’s literacy project (no matter how much I loved it) simply because it felt right.Like so many others, COVID-19 had put a new spin on my future.Time to take stock! So, I made a pact with myself to adapt to whatever came my way.My ?rst hope was to get back into shape; second, to absolutely NOT take on any big projects as is my wont; and third, to do more things that I enjoy — speci?cally writing and painting — my passions.I’ve pretty well followed through on all of these along with catching up with friends given our reprieve due to the vaccines.I think, alas, I may have overdone it.This past week I went for a hike with my dear friend Helena.Fresh air — good! Nature — good! It was a perfect day — a little cloudy and not too hot.Helena is one of those friends with whom I laugh all the time and who takes life as I do — moment by moment by moment. No matter how dire, we somehow turn our lives into comedy skits. We know it’s all about survival. The day really was glorious and Helena and I settled on Cafe Santropol after getting lost on Mount Royal for two hours. We had a really good time! The food was great, the waiter was funny, and the other diners were very friendly. It always seems just like one big happy family being there. When my Townships buddies visit, I try to bring them.As we were dining, I was telling Helena how happy I was that I could ?nally be present for my friends and family.I was living a healthy, happy life and felt strong. On that note, we decided to head home.Helena, being the immensely artistic individual that she is, decided to video the interior of this very funky resto as we were leaving, and me, being the clown that I am, decided to photo bomb it.I did a ‘star jump’ (cheerleader move) and as we were hysterically crying with laughter BANG! it happened.I slammed right into the wall so hard I couldn’t move, breathe or speak.I felt like my back had moved into my chest and crushed it.All I could think was ‘you frickin idiot, you’ve gone and broken your back’ and a tremendous sadness broke over me.I ?nally squeaked out ‘help’ as sheer terror ensued. What was worse was that I could see in everyone’s eyes that they were thinking the same thing.I sat there for an hour not being allowed to move as we waited for the ambulance. The staff and Helena were great.I was afraid for them to call my husband as he has a heart condition.I could just see him pulling up when the ambulance was wheeling me into the carriage in one of those body grips where you can’t even move your head! ‘This is it’, I thought…he’ll have a heart attack. My stupidity will have killed my husband!’ I kept apologizing to everyone profusely and kept making jokes. When they wheeled me into the hospital and it struck me that I was in a body vice my ambulance companion had to scrape me off the ceiling as I tried to escape the grip of the gurney… yes, I am completely claustrophobic! Hours went by and they ?nally got me sitting in a wheelchair.First achievement! Then they thought I had chipped a vertebra and were discussing next steps…I kept falling asleep and got a lot of slaps in the face…I felt like I was in the movie ‘Airplane’… then the chip turned out to be false.Second achievement! After other tests and much discussion amongst the medical people, it turned out that although my back, arm and leg were banged up there was no fractured anything.Lots of physio would be required.Third achievement-could have been much worst! Now I simply have to rest up for a few weeks and heal my battered mind and body.Apparently, the reason I kept falling asleep was that I was going into shock…actually I’m still in shock. But, despite the ?asco I did learn a few things. It was a very humbling experience and as much as I would never wish it on my worst enemy, I’m back to being determined to absolutely NOT taking on any big projects.Life already does that for us thank you very much.Another thing, why are we all so conditioned to apologize for everything? Are we idiots?I have a BIG life which is nothing to apologize nor complain about and after this incident my doctor really set me straight.I’m not sorry for anything. His advice?Never stop being a clown and cultivate those star jumps! I suggest the same to you.Accidents happen. It’s that true, it’s that sad and sometimes, just sometimes, we are lucky! On that note, I’ve just become a great-aunt for the 17th time over and I’ve got to get back to living life moment by moment by moment by celebrating the good things.Helen Fortin Musings from the city NDP votes from Compton-Stanstead this election will be out of loyalty to the party, not for a strong representative for the constituency.Conservative candidate Pierre Tremblay could bene?t from his notoriety in the area as a municipal councillor in Sherbrooke and voters whose values align with those of the party, but Conservative leader Erin O’Toole has all but given the keys to the province to premier Legault, a contentious move for worried English- speakers.Tremblay described himself as a man of action, but also told The Record his motivation to run in the federal election was fueled by a disdain for Trudeau, so voters will have to decide whether Tremblay would be a spiteful or a willful representative.Green Party Candidate Sylvain Dodier walks the walk and upholds the values of the party as an environmentalist, a caregiver and an articulate spokesperson for the marginalized. The party has gained momentum in the riding during the past two elections, winning up to ?ve per cent of the vote. With climate change a major issue in the world today, Dodier could nudge the party further forward, but winning the riding would be an uphill battle. The strongest competition against the Liberals in Compton-Stanstead is the Bloc Québécois.Bloc candidate Nathalie Bresse has political experience at the municipal level dating back to 2005 and, like Bibeau, has done the work on the ground and has a reputation as a woman who gets things done. Her recent claim to fame was holding strong to get a school expansion in Ascot Corner, where she was mayor, to prevent elementary students from being transferred outside the municipality.Bresse is not a natural choice for English voters, but there are other things to consider. With the NDP “out” of the running, those votes will go somewhere. They could be divided among other parties like Greens or Conservatives, or undecideds could take the strategic route and back the perceived strongest candidate.Who that is depends on the appeal of nationalist rhetoric to French voters, and whether the English population can avoid getting carsick in the backseat of another federal election and trust their rights will be defended.Compton-Stanstead CONT’D FROM PAGE 5 PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY a year of reckoning for humanity and the Earth’s many other inhabitants.During this year, natural, or should we say unnatural, disasters – if we ?nally own up to our blatant involvement in having created the biodiversity and climate crises – have affected almost every region of the planet.Let’s not, for now, include the suffering brought on by a human- induced pandemic. The publication of the ?rst of three exhaustive reports by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) this summer (https:// tinyurl.com/IPCC-2021-report) simply con?rmed what millions of people in every corner of the Earth were viscerally experiencing: intensi?ed ?ooding, ?res resulting in deadly atmospheric pollution, heatwaves, rising sea levels, droughts, coral die- offs, wildlife extinction tragedies, melting glaciers, and unremitting suffering and forced migrations.António Guterres, the UN Secretary- General, has described the report as a “code red for humanity”.The Guardian put it succinctly: “As a verdict on the climate crimes of humanity, the new Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report could not be clearer: guilty as hell.” Last week I attended an online discussion sponsored by Our Children’s Trust, in whose name young people are taking the U.S.to court.(https://www.ourchildrenstrust.org) The litigation focuses on the refusal of the government to rein in the fossil- fuel industries’ emissions through ineptitude, inaction, and abetting with subsidies those corporations’ plunder of the natural world, thus causing grievous harm to children’s lives. These same unmitigated crimes have been and continue to be committed in Canada. The key speaker in the discussion was James Gustave Speth, who has just published They Knew: The US Federal Government’s Fifty-year Role in Causing the Climate Crisis. His book documents the indefensible and crystal-clear culpability of every Congress and US president since Ronald Reagan reversed Jimmy Carter’s move towards curbing greenhouse-gas emissions and instead escalated the harm, leading to the climate emergency we now ?nd ourselves in.Our Children’s Trust demands accountability, and fortunately these litigants are not the only ones whose voices are being heard.Greenpeace has already said that it will be using the IPCC report in court, as the report’s impeccable peer-reviewed science cannot be disputed.Meanwhile, the Climate Group, which represents over 260 regional governments and 300 multinational businesses, covering 1.75 billion people and 50% of the global economy, says: “Every decision, every investment, every target, needs to have the climate at its core.” The big question is whether the Glasgow UN Climate Summit in November will ?nd out if governments have been listening and breathing in the out-of-control misery perpetrated on communities on their watch by a small number of industrialized countries. Will rich countries such as Canada, Germany and the US, which all experienced disasters this summer, come to Glasgow in a spirit of cooperation and forcefully negotiate to push back the scourge of climate breakdown and consequently wildlife extinctions? What we need is commitment and action, not more targets that ultimately don’t materialize.Last week the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) ended its nine-day gathering of thousands of people in Marseille, France along with online participants. The World Conservation Congress meets every four years and its members discuss new initiatives to protect Nature. The IUCN, founded in 1948, has been for many years a major voice for the protection of biodiversity: “The message is simple. We are facing accelerating and interrelated biodiversity and climate change crises. We cannot resolve either crisis without prioritising the protection of primary forests and engaging in large-scale ecological restoration. This is critical to human well-being, to the diversity of life on Earth, and for a climate-safe future.” More than ever before, Indigenous people are demanding to be heard. The IUCN states, “We know how to protect and restore ecosystem integrity: it requires empowering and supporting Indigenous Peoples and communities who are the traditional owners and stewards of these forests…” Yet the organization ?nds itself in the midst of a huge controversy. Many governments are happy to pledge more land to be protected, but historically Indigenous people have been asked to leave those same territories as a result. Many groups are demanding that decolonization of conservation practices be enforced and that future national parks never again depopulate Indigenous groups who have inhabited and looked after those same places for thousands of years. The battle to contain the reckless endangerment brought about by corporations and governments is not only waged in the courtroom. This summer Extinction Rebellion (XR) activists forged forward around the world to protest peacefully against the banks’ ?nancing of oil extraction and exposed with great panache and creativity the utter hypocrisy and blatant misinformation by regional and national governments as well.Douglas Nadler Eastman Fire Department donates de?brillator to local store Record Staff The Eastman Fire Protection Department has donated an automated external de?brillator (AED) to Marché Tradition J.P.Fontaine Inc.to improve the safety of Eastman residents.According to Daniel Lefebvre, director of the ?re department, it was a logical decision to choose Marché Tradition because it is one of the busiest locations in town, easily accessible from Principale Street, and close to the Parc des sports.“The store’s hours of operation were also a factor.Being open every day, from morning until evening, ensures extended accessibility.AEDs give people without medical skills the ability to restore a victim’s heartbeat to avoid the worst consequences,” said Lefebvre. There are four AEDs in Eastman; at the ?re department, Club La Missisquoise, Proxim Pharmacy and now at Marché Tradition.Lefebvre said it is important to be aware of where the AEDs are located in the town. There is also a sign posted in the park.He encourages all Eastman residents to become familiar with each of the locations. It is also possible to ?nd the location of all the de?brillators in Quebec by visiting the Jacques de Champlain Foundation’s AED project website.Cardiac de?brillators are recommended in high-traf?c areas where people are likely to witness someone experiencing cardiac arrest. It is an essential tool in emergency situations. It is often people at the scene who offer victims the best chance of survival.Without a quick response, the chances of survival decrease by 7 to 10 per cent per minute. An AED increases a victim’s chances of survival until help arrives, such as paramedics. The device sends a shock to the heart, allowing it to beat again and deliver oxygen to the brain.PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 playing with the band Silver Eagles. To this day, we still hear about the band from followers who miss them.Doucet was born in Magog, Quebec, but lived in the Ottawa valley most of his younger years. He is from a military family with four brothers and one sister, none of whom are musically gifted.“I became interested in music when I was about twelve years old.I had a few friends who played a bit of guitar and I joined in with their help. After a lot of discussion, I convinced my mother to buy me my own guitar which came from the Sears catalogue for fourteen dollars” he recalled. It was, he re?ected, not much of a guitar compared to the ones they sell today, but he learned to play on it just the same.“I didn’t really know how to tune it so I put on a Johnny Cash record and tuned it to his hit song “Walk the line”.That worked pretty well until I had to get on stage with experienced musicians.” Sometimes we need to be crafty to deal with a problem, but in Doucet’s case, his solution to tuning his guitar would not work if he wanted to measure up to real professional musicians. It was clear he had to learn.“I got a call to see if I could replace someone with a band. They needed someone to do a few country songs, so off I went” said Doucet who was pretty con?dent at the time.“When I arrived, I got some pretty strange looks when they saw my guitar. The band leader asked if I was tuned to 440 standard tuning.I told him I didn’t know what he was talking about, and I was tuned to Johnny Cash, which brought on lots of laughs.” said the musician.Since those days, Doucet has acquired a lot of experience and learned to tune a guitar. He has honed his skills and has spent many hours on stage entertaining people with his guitar and his songs.“A few years later, I began to spend more time in the Eastern Townships, where my family owned a cottage.I met and became very good friends with a local musician, the late Gordie Smith, who had just ?nished touring with a band call Linda B and the Crowns” he remembered. They ended up playing together as a duet. After a while, they hired a drummer and a bass player to form the band named Whiteliner. The musicians stayed together for a few years.COURTESY CONT’D ON PAGE 10 Wayne Doucet PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 whole two weeks before I was asked to play with the Silver Eagles, in the USA.We played most of the New England states as well as playing in Canada for about 12 years” he said.“After that, I ended up joining Buck Sayers and his sons Randy and Carroll along with Dwayne Keeler” he said.Carroll Sayers shared that remembers playing with Doucet very well.“He is a ?ne musician, and you can have so much fun with this guy.He jokes a lot, he is so comical.I appreciate the times we played together very much,” said Sayers.Doucet is well-liked and respected by his peers, and they all have something positive to say about him. This proves once again that no matter which band they play with, at the end of the day, when they get together, they are like family.“Dwayne and I split from that group to form our own group with Joey Dingman, as bass player and I took over on lead guitar.Later on, I spent some time with different groups just sitting in as a guest player, until joining in with Bill Lavers and the late Reggie Paquin” he continued.“They asked us our band’s name, but at the time we didn’t have one.I said just call us Bill and The Boys, I don’t care. That name was in the newspaper for an ad the next week, so we kind of got stuck with it” he recalled. This trip down memory lane reminded him of all the special people he has encountered during his career. Some are gone, some he will never forget, the sure thing is that he made a lot of friends through the years.“I’ve played music with a lot of wonderful people, many of them are no longer with us sadly.I am very thankful for all my fellow musicians who are too many to mention all their names” he stressed.Doucet said he can’t wait to play again when life gets back to something near normal. He made a lot of memories over the years but said that one anecdote in particular comes to his mind, and he laughs remembering it.“This story is all about an old friend of mine named Gary Winslow who passed away many years ago.He was a great inspiration to me and taught me many things, which I still live by today.Picture this! We’re playing for a crowd of about 500 people in the middle of our second set after having a few beers in the afternoon, Gary reaches across the stage and hands me his bass guitar and says, “here you play bass for a while”.I said, Gary you know I don’t play bass.He says sure you do, I showed you how this afternoon while we were having a beer at the Maples Hotel.Did you forget already?” Like most of us, Doucet has a strong idea about today’s country music and what it should be.“The world needs music,” he said.“I must say that I am not a big fan of today’s kind of country music.I tend to lean more toward traditional country.Songs are simple and put forth, a message that anyone can relate to and you can recognize the singer instantly.I ?nd most of the music put out today sounds very similar. You can’t tell one from the other unless you have someone such as Alan Jackson, who is very distinctive. In any case, there’s a place for every kind of music. To each his own” he stressed. It was fun to reconnect with Wayne Doucet and I hope you’ll enjoy reading about this well-known and well-liked musician. You’ll catch him soon at a hall near you.Last Piggery presentation for the summer. This Saturday September 18, at 8:00 pm Pure Country (Frank Young and Linda Gosselin) will perform with their band at The Piggery, with special guest Dwight Leroux, who will perform a tribute to Dwight Yoakam.Reserve your tickets right now 819- 842-2431.PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW TALK TV Listings September 17 - 23, 2021 Page 11 Your week on TV FRIDAY EVENING SEPTEMBER 17, 2021 Bell Star 6 PM 6:30 7 PM 7:30 8 PM 8:30 9 PM 9:30 10 PM 10:30 11 PM 11:30 12 AM WCAX # - - Channel 3 News at Six (N) CBS Evening News Entertainment Tonight (N) Big Brother (N) ’ Å The Greatest AtHome Videos (N) ’ Å Blue Bloods The family must help Danny’s nephew.’ Channel 3 News (:35) The Late Show With Stephen Colbert ’ Å WPTZ % - - NBC5 News at 6 (N) NBC Nightly News - Holt Jeopardy! And then we found out that all three are girls! It might be a dad thing, but I worry about my daughter more than the three boys combined.Long story short, I am losing my mind with worry for my wife. She is doing amazingly so far, but three babies is so much for her to carry. She is still trying to do all she usually does, but she is so easily exhausted, so she gets upset with herself. The kids are helping all they can, but she is a mom who thinks she can do it all and doesn’t like to ask them.Meanwhile, I have been working 18 hours a day, seven days a week, trying to get caught up on the jobs.I also try to take my wife to all her appointments.Recently, I started having some chest pains and spent two days in the hospital.Seeing the worry on my wife’s face then broke my heart. The last thing she needs is more to worry about.I feel like I am trying to do too much, but I don’t see any other way.I truly feel like this world has chewed me up and spit me out, and now it has a yoke around my neck, and I don’t see any way out.- Dad on the Edge Dear Dad: To start, take a few long, deep breaths. It’s essential that you stop overworking yourself.Set realistic expectations for clients in terms of project timelines, and turn jobs down if need be.Yes, this might lead to reduced cash ?ow in the short term. But it’s the best way to ensure that, in the long term, you’re able to keep working, without getting sick, burning out or worse. You need to be here to watch your three new baby girls grow up, after all.A worry shared is a worry halved.Let friends and family members in on what you’re going through. They’ll want to help, and there will be many ways for them to do so - like running errands so your wife doesn’t have to, assisting with appointments and helping care for those three incoming bundles of joy once they arrive.Lastly, it’s admirable that you’re trying to avoid stressing out your wife. But bottling everything up inside will only cause her to worry more.Open up to her, and share what’s on your heart and mind. You two will get through this together.“Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now! in a pair or team event, the players do not know how they stand until after play has ended. One plus is that it speeds up play. Also, if the players always knew the score, it would sometimes result in different tactics being adopted - as in today’s deal, which was the last in the ?nal of the junior (under 26) teams at the 2012 World Youth Team Championships in Taicang, China. Before it was played, Israel led the Netherlands by 1.33 international match points. As we saw yesterday, the Dutch North- South pair played in two no-trump and made 10 tricks for plus 180 after an Israeli misdefense and excellent card reading by declarer Gerbrand Hop.East-West were left to rue that East did not have a spade entry for a heart lead through declarer’s king.Though they did not know it, the Israeli North-South pair had to score at least 140 for victory. After North’s redouble, the jump to three clubs ought to have been game- forcing; with only invitational values, North would have rebid two clubs. But South passed. However, if South had known the position, he would not have passed. He had to take 11 tricks in clubs to win the match, which was impossible.West led the spade ace and shifted to a club.Declarer drew trumps, knocked out the spade king, won the spade return, discarded a heart on his last spade, played his three top diamonds and claimed his contract exactly. The Netherlands had gained 2 IMPs to win by 0.67!
