GORDON LAMBIE By Gordon Lambie The Maison Aube Lumiere’s 30th annual poinsettia campaign begins this weekend.Having started in 1991 with only 500 plants, the fundraiser will this year be selling 6,400 for the bene?t of the palliative care home’s ongoing work in the community.“It started ?ve years before the ?rst house on Kennedy street,” said Vicky Bélanger, the Maison Aube Lumiere’s Director of Financing and Communications.“It’s how they started to raise money for the home.” Bélanger said that in those early years the plants were grown in the garages of committee members, but the operation has been based out the Serres Saint Elie nursery on industrial Boulevard for the last 25 years.WEEKEND EDITION CONT’D ON PAGE 3 CONT’D ON PAGE 3 PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW Page 2 Friday, November 19, 2021 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Ben by Daniel Shelton The Record e-edition There for you 24-hours-a-day 7-days-a-week.Wherever you are.Access the full edition of the Sherbrooke Record as well as special editions and 30 days of archives.Renew or order a new 12-month print subscription and get a 12-month online subscription for an additional $5 or purchase the online edition only for $125.00 Record subscription rates (includes Quebec taxes) For print subscription rates, please call 819-569-9528 or email us at billing@sherbrookerecord.com 12 month web only: $125.00 1 month web only: $11.25 Web subscribers have access to the daily Record as well as archives and special editions.Subscribing is as easy as 1,2,3: 1.Visit the Record website: www.sherbrookerecord.com 2.Click e-edition.3.Complete the form and wait for an email activating your online subscription.Weather TODAY: FLURRIES HIGH 1 LOW -4 SATURDAY: MIX OF SUN AND CLOUD HIGH 1 LOW -2 SUNDAY: PERIODS OF RAIN HIGH 5 LOW 3 MONDAY: PERIODS OF RAIN HIGH 6 LOW -5 TUESDAY: PERIODS OF SNOW HIGH -2 LOW -9 Lennoxville Library Good Reads Review by Melanie Cutting According to www.goodreads.com, The Liar’s Dictionary by Eley Williams is “An exhilarating and laugh-out-loud debut novel from a prize-winning new talent which chronicles the misadventures of a lovelorn Victorian lexicographer…” A Victorian lexicographer?Really?Well, yes.Although it took almost one half of the book to get to an actual “story”, when it does appear, it is pretty funny. The constant stream of wordplay can distract and detract, though. For those among us who are totally enthralled with words, especially the made-up kind, this book offers endless amusement; for those who aren’t, it quickly becomes tiresome. That is, until the shape of the story ?nally emerges, at about page 121.Once past the deluge of ?ctitious words (mountweazels), the interplay between the story of the aforementioned “lovelorn Victorian lexicographer” Peter Winceworth in 1899, and Mallory, a young female intern employed about 100 years later by the same library, Swansby House, comes clear. Each chapter is gifted with a title designed to offer the reader a clue about the contents.Example, G is for ghost (v.); M is for mendaciloquence (n.), K is for kelemenopy (n.), and so on.The chapters alternate in time, as we follow the hapless Winceworth in the Scrivenery at his task of culling the mountweazels from the legitimate words in Swansby’s New Encyclopaedic Dictionary, and preserving the phony lisp that forms his best defense against having to socialize with the rest of the staff. His prescribed visits to speech therapist Dr.Rochfort-Smith’s multi-hued orange of?ce are particularly amusing. The doctor’s bird “made a point of catching Winceworth’s eye across the room once he was settled in his chair, then with something approaching real malice, visibly breathing in and doing the ornithological equivalent of letting it rip.” For amusement, Winceworth drinks.Alone.Meanwhile, back in the 21st century, Mallory is the sole employee at the venerable Swansby enterprise (still standing after all this time), unless you count the many cats, all named Tits, short for Titivillus, who wander the corridors keeping the mouse population in check. It is Mallory’s task to weed out the numerous fake words as the process of digitizing the text of Swansby’s encyclopedic dictionary moves forward. Her boss, David Swansby, scion of 1899’s Gerolf Swansby, is not so very different from Winceworth. She too is shy, and reluctant to engage in social pastimes, but unlike Winceworth, who is merely antisocial, Mallory is queer, and quietly in love with Pip, her ?atmate.Pip is gay and “out”, Mallory is just gay.The recent excitement in Mallory’s life comes from the spate of threatening phone calls to her of?ce: “There’s a bomb in the building.” Followed by silence, and then by alarm. One hundred years earlier, Winceworth’s fate takes a rather unexpected turn when he meets Sophia, the girlfriend of an obnoxious colleague, lurking behind the same potted plant he has chosen as his hiding place at one of the infrequent social events he must attend. It is love at ?rst sight. He wants to impress her with his skills.“He could not play the balalaika, but he had other talents. He could spin the etymology of the word hello from its earliest roots.” Although they part as acquaintances, they soon meet again in St.James Park, where Winceworth has fallen asleep on a bench in a vaguely drunken stupor, and is rudely awakened by a blood-drenched pelican, locked in what appears to be mortal combat with a woman—Sophia! As it turns out, she is actually trying to save its life by, inexplicably, shoving Winceworth’s broken Swansby pen down its throat. The pelican is rescued, and the path is laid for a relationship, of sorts, to form between the Winceworth and Sophia, despite her status as the ?ancé of Winceworth’s colleague.Ultimately, Mallory and Pip cross paths– indirectly– with Winceworth as they discover that the clues to many of the mountweazels on index cards from long ago lead back to Winceworth’s broken pen.And thus the circle is complete.I leave the sleuthing over who is to be blamed for threatening to plant the bomb, and the ultimate fate of the Swansby building, to the reader. The trip through time, and even lengthier trip through a lexicographic miasma, will either bore you to tears, or leave you looking for more of the same. This is not a tale that will pull the reader, headlong, through the plot.If you have no interest in stopping and smelling the verbal roses, then, sadly, this is likely not the right book for you.Eley Williams is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and author of Attrib.and Other Stories. Her work has appeared in The Times Literary Supplement and London Review of Books, among other publications. She lives in London. The Liar’s Dictionary is available through the Lennoxville Library.Melanie Cutting retired in 2005 from a lengthy but distinguished career as a student services administrator at Champlain Regional College.Since retirement, she has been involved in many volunteer activities in the area, as well as working with Bishop’s University’s Write Here, Write Now writing project, and The Townships Sun, as layout supervisor.NEWS FROM THE LENNOXVILLE LIBRARY The Lennoxville Art Group’s annual winter show opens at the library November 23rd, featuring a variety of paintings in acrylic, oil, and watercolour.Greeting cards and affordably priced small format original works will also be on sale.Perfect for Christmas presents! welcomed more than 3,500 people and their families, free of charge, since opening its doors for the ?rst time in 1997.The goal of the fundraiser is to raise at least $150,000, roughly ten per cent of the $1.5 million they work to raise annually to serve their clientele.Looking at the detail’s of this year’s sale, the communications director shared that although the plants are slightly more expensive, it is not out of an effort to push harder on supporters.“It had been the same price since 2018, but with the pandemic everything is more expensive,” Bélanger said, adding that, “usually when we raise, it stays that way for a couple of years.” Those looking to pick up some of the festive ?owers can pay between $25 and $45 depending on the size and colour of choice.Although the sale of?cially begins on Saturday, Bélanger said that the doors to the greenhouse will be open Friday for those particularly keen to have a look.In theory the sale continues until Dec.18, but the director encouraged those interested in participating in the fundraiser to do so sooner than later.“Last year by Dec.14 there was not a single plant left,” she said.Aside from the direct sales at the greenhouse, the Maison Aube Lumiere will also have a kiosk at the Carrefour de l’Estrie mall from Dec.2 to 12, and will sell poinsettias at the Jardin Des Trouvailles nursery in Coaticook.Purchases can also be made online or by calling the palliative care home directly at (819) 821-3120.“Last year we tripled home delivery,” Bélanger said.Poinsettias Students create new petition, start GoFundMe for ?red university professor By Michael Boriero Local Journalism Initiative The backlash over Bishop’s University’s decision to dismiss a tenured professor, Dr.Christopher Darius Stonebanks, continued to evolve on Thursday, but the reasons for his dismissal remain behind closed doors. The Record contacted Stonebanks by email, however, the former professor was unable to shed any light on the current situation. He is meeting with his legal team on Friday, though, where he expects to ?nd out whether he can share information about his dismissal. The university also has yet to respond to The Record’s requests for clarifying information.Vice-Principal Academic and Research Dr.Miles Turnbull did not respond by press time. And Interim Dean of the School of Education Dr.Anthony Di Mascio was unable to speak on the matter. The Association of Professors of Bishop’s University (APBU) told The Record that President Mark Labenski would “be in touch soon,” however, he also did not respond by time the newspaper went to press Thursday. The Record spoke to the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT), a federation of independent associations representing approximately 70,000 teachers, librarians, researchers, and other academic professionals across the country. The APBU is a member of the federation.CAUT Executive Director David Robinson said he was unaware of the situation at Bishop’s.However, he explained how a tenured professor could be dismissed from a university. It needs to be a serious violation, Robinson said, or breaking the law, such as academic fraud.“Generally, I think, in terms of dealing with tenure, oftentimes people think that tenure means that you’re untouchable. What tenure essentially is, is a guarantee that the only reason a professor can be dismissed or terminated from their employment is for just cause,” he said. But dismissal for just cause is rare.According to Robinson, there is maybe one case every other year.It doesn’t happen often because of the arduous process involved in obtaining tenure in the ?rst place, he continued, it’s a major commitment by the university. He told The Record that in most cases where a professor is terminated for just cause, they will typically ?le a grievance and take the university to court. However, it mostly depends on whether the faculty association has suf?cient evidence to support a grievance.“I think it’s fairly common because again, it’s relatively unusual for a professor to be terminated for just cause because the threshold of the just cause law is pretty high. You basically have to break the law, or engage in fraud misconduct,” Robinson said. The decision to terminate a tenured professor shouldn’t come lightly, he continued, since the “tenure system is there to allow academics to engage in research, explore controversial ideas, without fear of being terminated.” It can also effectively ruin a professor’s career.“Once you’re released from a university, the academic job market is pretty tight […] and the nature of academic careers is that even a short interruption in your research and teaching and service activities can have a lifetime effect so it’s quite serious,” said Robinson. The ‘We Stand With Stonebanks’ Facebook group, formerly known as ‘Fight For Stonebanks,’ was also active for a third consecutive day, as members reacted to the loss of a petition that was created on Wednesday, demanding answers from the university’s administration. The petition garnered over 550 signatures, but it was later removed after its creator was intimidated into taking it down, according to Nikki Baribeau, a Bishop’s student and member of the Facebook group. However, Baribeau did not clarify how they were intimidated. She also created a new petition called ‘We support Dr.Stonebanks, we stand against systemic racism and silencing of BIPOC at BU’ Thursday morning, which has accumulated more than 200 signatures.Baribeau said she didn’t want to be silenced by the university.“I felt that this should not be put on hold again because this has been going on for a really long time, so I put up another petition to show that not everyone can be intimidated,” she said, adding that there are rumours about Stonebanks’ dismissal, which the group is trying to dispel. However, she did not divulge any details about the rumours. She was also unable to provide any pertinent information regarding Stonebanks due to the nature of non-disclosure agreements at play between the university and the dismissed professor.“I really would love to talk because I think this story should be shared, the rumours going around are completely ridiculous, about what he was charged with and I don’t want to repeat them because it’s really messed up,” said Baribeau.Baribeau shared another post on the Facebook group, roughly an hour after her interview with The Record, this time with a link to a GoFundMe page called ‘Fundraising for Legal fees for Dr.Stonebanks’, which has already raised $465 out of a $10,000 goal.Stonebanks’ daughter, Farah Roxanne, posted in the group shortly after con?rming that “this case will be taken to court.” She said any donation would help pay for l egal fees. She added that the original petition was removed due to “scare tactics,” but didn’t provide any context.PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND Boris Dolin Lee Ann Hogle, and Rev.Carole Martignacco 1Our word today “access” can be complicated. It can be a verb or noun, and “accessible” is an adjective. It might be used as a blueprint to change the entrances to a public building, or a plan to make sure as many people as possible exercise the right to vote, or even a policy to ensure government documents can be used to report news stories. How do we offer a single perspective to open us to the divine? When I face writer’s block I turn to music.“Though ancient walls may still stand proud, and racial strife be fact, though boundaries may be lines of hate, proclaim God’s saving act.Walls that divide are broken down, God is our unity.Chains that enslave are thrown aside, God is our liberty.” Those are the words to a modern hymn in our tradition.(It was written in 1974, long before Donald Trump started to campaign on building his wall.) It brings to mind the day Jesus let his disciples and the children into the temple; which had always barred women and children. It reminds me of how Paul opened up the new faith of Jesus to the Gentiles, and even Roman centurions. It points to the deaconesses in the early church, a radical change.Jesus’ wisdom became accessible to all people. Here are a few more lines from that hymn: “This broken world seeks lasting health, and vital unity”, “the truth we seek.unites us on a common quest for self and world made new”, “a unity of serving love that lives to praise God’s name”.Thank you for the inspiration, Walter Farquarson. So good readers, let’s break down the walls that divide us, and provide access to divine love for everybody.2 We like to think we live in a land of equal opportunity. Our laws, our sacred scriptures, and our wisdom teachers all point to this aspiration. But we are not there yet, and we must continually be aware of the forces, both active and passive, that prevent access to all that life can offer us.I am of an age where the civil rights movement was one of the ?rst times I was exposed to the inequalities present in our society.Since then, we have witnessed many more protests that make us aware of the limited access certain groups have to education, health services, steady jobs, and freedom from persecution. The forces that undermine access may be human greed, fear, indifference, or blindness to systemic inequalities.More than ever, we need to listen to the voices from the margins, calling us to pay attention to these inequalities.Who are the people we are not hearing from?Do we get our news mainly through our social media accounts that tend to reinforce our already held views? In Christian terms we have to ask ourselves who are the invisible neighbours Jesus asks us to love. This is the challenge of our times 3 Only a few times have I gone camping and slept with no tent under the stars.Of course, the weather has to be reasonable and the number of creeping critters around the area must be low, but it can be quite an enjoyable experience. While not necessarily protected from the elements, these nights open up to so mny opportunities for beauty and surprises. From the clear view of the stars above, to the full view of the sights and sounds of the forest, there is access to the fullness of the nature around us.It can be quite a powerful evening without that tent. There is a well-known story from the Bible about Abraham and Sarah who welcome guests into their own tent, and rush to give them a place to rest and some good food and drink. While we later learn that these visitors are messengers of God, it is clear that Abraham and Sarah act the same for everyone who stops by.There is a beautiful midrash, a story, that tells us that their hospitality was so strong that it wasn’t just their open personality that made them special, but that they even designed their tent intentionally to be open on all four sides — open to every stranger passing by from any direction in the desert.Abraham has an open heart and an open hand.He is not content to wait for guests, but rather seeks them out, runs to greet them, brings them inside and takes care of them.He even decides that access to compassion and caring is more important than a wall separating his home from the outside world.I often hold up Abraham’s tent as a glowing model of “radical hospitality”.It is a reminder of the importance of providing equal access to all people, and of the work of creating holy spaces where everyone can ?nd their place and feel comfortable. In my own community, I make sure to tell visitors that when they step through our doors, they should not have to give up who they are, and that their story, their relationships, and their sense of self will be valued and welcomed.Being truly welcomed means that we can make connections and become part of something bigger than ourselves. We enter as individuals, and we leave as part of a community. One word, three voices today. What does “access” say to you.Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rabbi Boris Dolin leads the Dorshei-Emet community in Montreal; Rev.Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer’s Cliff, Magog & Georgeville United Churches; Rev.Carole Martignacco, closing its doors Record Staff A last mass will be celebrated on Sunday, Nov.21, at 9 a.m.at Saint-Austin Church located in the municipality of Austin. The small church, which is part of the Notre-Dame- du-Mont-Carmel parish, must close its doors due to low attendance and insuf?- cient participation in the annual voluntary contribution. The parish committee is currently in discussions with the Austin municipal authorities about selling the building. The parish wants the church, built in 1865, to be able to serve the residents of the municipality.“The building is in good condition and has been well maintained over the years. It is a source of pride for us to be able to bequeath a building that is in good condition,” said Nathalie Taillandier, president of the Notre-Dame-du-Mont- Carmel parish committee. The money generated by the sale of the church will allow the parish to continue its pastoral mission.pastoral mission.Money will also be invested in the local cemetery.St.Augustine’s Church belonged to the Anglican community in the area until 1927 when it became a Catholic place of worship. Its origins give it a very special character, worthy of the history of the Memphremagog region. In the last 18 months, Saint-Austin Church is the seventh church to close its doors in the Archdiocese of Sherbrooke. The churches of Saint-Jean-l’Évangéliste in Coaticook, Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix in Johnville, Saint-Clément in Bishopton, Sainte-Famille in Sherbrooke, Sainte- Praxède in the Brompton sector and Saint-Paul in season has returned to Mhist, Sherbrooke’s history museum. From now until Jan.9, visitors of all ages, and families in particular, are invited to come visit a new exhibit entitled ‘Christmas stories’ to learn about the history of treasured holiday traditions and get a look at how they may have taken place locally.“We cover the tree, the music, the folklore, the characters,” said David Lacoste, the museum’s Executive Director.“We tried to look at a little bit of everything.” Marie-Ève Gingras, coordinator of the exhibition, said that the space has been created with fun and family in mind.“We worked hard on the visuals, but also to create ways that children could be independent during their visit,” Gingras said, explaining that the exhibit has activities suited to a range of ages, and features a return of some of the more hands-on aspects of museum displays that have been missing for the last 18 months. In addition to photo and bilingual text displays built off of the museum’s own archives, the exhibit hall is ?lled with displays of colourful toys and games drawn from the collections of other nearby museums, like the Beaulne and Colby-Curtis museums. These displays, while interesting on their own, also make up part of several scavenger hunt activities that have been planned. The coordinator also pointed out the presence of Falala the arctic fox, who stands near several of the more signi?cant displays to offer a little information to younger visitors in the form of a French audio recording.“We tried to be as varied and dynamic as possible,” she said.Over the course of the next month and a half, Lacoste said that a full slate of school groups is set to come visit the space.Because of that fact he encouraged families interested in visiting to call ahead and make sure that they are coming at a good time.On Dec.4, the Museum will be offering a special ‘children’s’ day’ where families who sign up in advance will be able to visit free of charge and participate in special activities and crafting only available on that day.‘Christmas stories’ has been set up in the museum’s Wednesday evening around 5:30 p.m.Principal and Vice-Chancellor Michael Goldbloom emailed Bishop’s University students and community regarding the ongoing debates about sexual assault policy at the school.“It has been anguishing to hear that students at Bishop’s feel unsafe on the campus and unsupported by the University,” the message began.“I have heard the clear message from our students that we need to do more, and as principal I am accountable for ensuring that we do,” Goldbloom declared.“Statements of support and expressions of good intent matter, but the actions of our administration and of our community will be what matter most.” The statement was published little more than 24 hours before this year’s Take Back the Night March was set to begin, and two weeks after a message plastered along the bridge near the entrance to campus kicked off heightened frustration and debate among the student body.Goldbloom stressed the sincere concerns and engagement required from the whole community to achieve advances, highlighted resources currently available, and committed to providing support and seeking justice.Concretely, the message announced an upcoming meeting with students before the end of the week, an upcoming public townhall next week, and the engagement of a third party to investigate “the declarations posted on the bridge.” Me Danielle Gauthier was announced as an independent, external investigator to examine “the declarations on the bridge made by survivors.” Goldbloom invited “anyone who wishes to share information about these disclosures,” to contact Me Gauthier con?dentially at daniellegauthier@lavery.ca.Online, Gauthier’s ?rm Lavery highlights her expertise in health and labour laws, alternative dispute resolution, arbitration and mediation, and the “new legal challenges in the world of labour law, the rules of governance and ethics, the impact of new social media on employers, demographic changes, and globalization.” Goldbloom and Linden-Andersen will jointly hold the townhall at 11:30 a.m.on Nov.24 in McGreer Hall’s Cleghorn conference room.Cleghorn is listed as a conference room with a capacity of 60 to 120 depending on arrangement and, presumably, Covid measures. The meeting will be livestreamed via Microsoft Teams.Goldbloom and Dean of Student Affairs Stine Linden-Andersen will meet Nov.19 with members of the Sexual Culture Committee and the students who volunteered to address the board of governors last Friday. The SCC is a committee of the Student Representative Council, formally struck in January 2021 and has been working independently and in collaboration with the administration to improve information, services, policies, and training at Bishop’s.The SCC’s policy review subcommittee notably reviewed existing sexual assault and harassment policies and supports earlier this year.Their 26- page End of Year Report was submitted to members of the administration and board last April. An abridged version is available for download at www.linktr.ee/BUSCC.The students who addressed the board of governors last Friday were spontaneous volunteers from among those who gathered to silently manifest their devotion to progress on these issues.Jessica Landry, an honour roll psychology student, was among those volunteers last week.Speaking to The Record last Sunday, she described the experience as scary, but powerful and hopeful. She says the room was small, but ?lled with the biggest table she had ever seen.A camera was streaming the meeting via zoom.On one wall a screen projected the video feeds of remote participants, but all but one had their cameras muted so the screen was mostly black.“There were only two women (board members) in the room,” says Landry.“It is kind of scary to have to share your story about ‘I was sexually assaulted as a child for many years.’ And, it is dif?cult to have to explain that in front of, you know, a room of mostly men.” “I have not personally been assaulted by anyone at Bishop’s, so I can’t talk about that,” Landry explains.“But this has always been a subject that is close to my heart.I had to live through it and grow through it, and I did have a lot of therapy. One of the things I have done for years now is to just openly talk about my story so others can feel comfortable sharing theirs.” “Even in 2021, there’s still a taboo regarding sexual assault, so I always want to be sure I’m open about talking about mine,” Landry speci?es.“I’m not going to say I’m all better or that it’s not still a painful situation. But I am in a better headspace than people who have just been recently assaulted.” Landry feels that the board members were mostly interested and engaged as she and the other students spoke. One spoke of inequities and fears particular to her experiences as a female student athlete.Another spoke of the heightened risks she lives with as an Indigenous woman.Another said she personally knows of three men living in her residence who have been accused of assault.Another requested a minute of silence for victims of assault.“That’s when we all held hands and we were crying a lot,” Landry remembers.“There was a lot of people clearly nodding while we were talking. They seemed really interested.” Landry says it has been a very dif?cult two weeks, hearing everyone’s stories and fears, but also really empowering. She wants to remain engaged in the process, feeling that her experience working in the insurance industry gives her a skillset to engage meaningfully in detailed policy work.Landry did not start university immediately after secondary school, choosing to enter the workforce. She started her studies at 23 and describes feeling a bit like a big sister among her fellow students at Bishop’s.Landry has met with administrators at Université de Sherbrooke informally to understand why their sexual assault policies have such a strong reputation.“I have a 15-year-old niece who is thinking of going to cegep and then university… and I have to wonder, why CONT’D ON PAGE 7 PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 formula and hit the 150-word count bang on.Clever formulae stroke my ego.Puzzles too. They pull me up into a sparkling, heady, prideful place. They drown out the rootier sounds of self-judgement and doubt, the fear of public exposure.Everything we do in public is permanent and political. It is so much easier when I amplify the words I heard someone else say and they sounded good, or elevate the acts someone else did and they were good.“I know it when I see it” is often called on to ?ll in when de?nitions get tricky.I’ll know it when I don’t, will cover others.Accountability is so much easier to demand than deliver. My Take: By Matthew McCully I’m always astounded when I ask to interview people who have expressed an opinion on social media and they respond, oh no, I don’t want to go on the record. The funny thing is, you are no less accountable for your statements on social media than you are in my newspaper. The difference is, I built a career on choosing my words carefully and I have a legal obligation to accurately report what I see and hear without taking a side. So, we sink or swim together. And just between you and me, if you go off half-cocked during an interview, I can separate passion from frustration and hurt from misguided anger to get your point across. But what I can’t do is turn a blind eye to witless online mudslinging, or just throw it in the free speech pile. Please, think before you write. My Take: By Gordon Lambie Writing for a living makes you acutely aware of just how true it is that everyone makes mistakes.Try as you might to proofread and double-check details, eventually something ends up in print that just doesn’t look quite right and you’re left to face the judgement or confusion of your readers. It’s part of the reason why systems of checks and balances exist in the world.Typos might be the context that I live with, but there are much more serious errors that can be made, with much more serious consequences. It is important that someone be there to double check the details when matters of ?nance, public health, or individual lives hang in the balance, but let’s not pretend that’s an easy job.I’ve never heard an ode to an auditor, and I can understand why, but that doesn’t mean it’s not important work.My Take: By Michael Boriero Accountability is not always a prominent trait found in people. It is easier to make excuses, rather than owning up to a mistake or explaining the reason behind an unpopular decision. While we often hold politicians accountable — world leaders, corporations, etc — we fail to hold ourselves, the humble citizen, to the same standards. But unfortunately that word, that trait, has been effectively thrown out of the window with the rise of social media.People feel safe to say what they please without any repercussions. If we want to challenge institutions, and the greater powers in the world, we also need to look inward. If we do not hold ourselves to the same standards, then who are we to question others.I think people, myself included, forget that actions matter. And words matter.Remaining silent on an issue moments after passing judgment, especially online, is cowardly.DEAR EDITOR, I am writing about the low level of voter participation in both the federal and municipal elections, although it was higher in the federal election.Next year we shall discover if it is higher in the provincial election. We have the priceless privilege of choosing those who governs us at all three levels of government. Those who don’t take advantage of it should be ashamed of themselves.Government is decided by voting, not by war.In Cowansville, where I live, only 32 per cent of those eligible to vote did so! McClure Special to The Record Farnham, a small village located in Brome-Missisquoi, is known for its picturesque downtown core that continues to re?ect its Loyalists heritage. What makes the village more unique is that it is the site of a National Defense Base dating back to 1910.It served as a military training camp for soldiers during both World Wars.It also served as a prisoner of war camp (POW) for German soldiers, as well as interred Japanese Canadians evicted from British Columbia. The CFB Farnham faced the possibility of closure various times over the years, but it continues to be an important base, and one of the largest, of the 2nd Canadian Division Support Group of the Canadian Forces for the Quebec area that trains deployable joint forces for domestic operations. The CFB Farnham was opened in 1910 by Minister of Military and Defense Sir Frederick Borden of the Laurier government. It was one of the ?rst military base installments in Canada at a time when the country was slowly organizing its military to protect its borders following the American Civil War and the Fenian Raids. It was originally used for Cavalry training before it became an important training camp for soldiers to be deployed to Europe during the First World War.It welcomed regiments from across the province such as the 26th Stanstead Dragoons, the 6th and 17th Hussars (Montreal), the 13th Scottish Light Dragoons (Waterloo), the 7th Hussars (Compton), and the 11th Hussars (Richmond). It closed its doors in 1918 and the property started to be used by the Dominion Experimental Farm that was located not far from the site of the military camp up until the Second World War.On Oct.16 1940, the base reopened its doors to train soldiers for World War Two.According to Record archives, the CFB Farnham served as a POW camp and internment camp for German soldiers and Japanese Canadians forced out of British Columbia, and it was kept under high surveillance.Interestingly, it was also a detention centre for German of?cers. In the summer of 1943, a manhunt took place in the Eastern Townships after one of the German POWs escaped from the camp.He was a Nazi sea captain and he escaped the day he was to be transferred to another camp in St.Johns.Of?cials of the camp took notice when they did a line-up for attendance. The camp was able to accommodate up to 700 people and around 2,800 internees and POWs passed through the camp between 1940 and 1946.Following the Second World War, the camp was abandoned until it became the training grounds for the Canadian Forces in 1952.It trained recruits, reservists, and cadets during peace time. The camp underwent various investments from the Department of National Defense in the years following to upgrade its facilities to ensure that Farnham could continue to support recruit training and military operations in Quebec as it does today.Possibly the 5th Princess Louise Dragoon Guards of Ottawa in camp in the Townships, 1904-1912 ETRC ARCHIVES rights would be more protected.” As one concrete example, Landry says at UdeS, when a student reports an assault, the administration can remove the accused from class as a ?rst- level response while investigations are underway. The initial message on the bridge at Bishop’s spoke speci?cally of a survivor’s accused aggressor still being in class. After the last townhall, Landry was frustrated to recall statements to the effect that a student could not simply be removed from class pending investigation, because education is a right. At Ude S, Landry says she understands the accused is not suspended, rather they continue their studies remotely, a mode of study which has become quite achievable and commonplace since the pandemic.Another comparison, not raised by Landry, would be to the degree of transparency toward sexual violence and harassment annual reporting at the two schools. In a recent interview, Linden-Andersen said that Bishop’s does track sexual assault reporting statistics and reports those numbers to government every year as required by law, but cannot share these numbers publicly to protect con?dentiality of survivors within the school’s small community.Dr.Gregory Brophy of the Committee for the Prevention of Harassment and Sexual Violence con?rms these statistics are collected, but cannot be shared publicly because Bishop’s has not received consent from survivors to share this information. He says the school’s Sexual Aggression Response Coordinator is working on a procedure to solicit consent from complainant/ survivors so that Bishop’s can publicize statistical data while respecting the con?dentiality.UdeS has already taken the step of staf?ng an Équipe-conseil en matière de respect des personnes (Respect for Persons Advisory Team) which pursues a proactive mandate, including the publication of detailed and nuanced annual reports. These reports include qualititative analysis such as noting that employees statistically trend toward seeking information and mediative supports, while students trend toward wanting to make disclosures, reports, or formal complaints.Quanti?ed insights in the form multiple graphs and tables which break out reports by category, by month, report annual totals, or plot curves over multiples years are also included.Three years of reports are currently available as pdfs at www.usherbrooke.ca/respect/apropos/rapport-annuel.For her part, Landry wants to see increased accountability and transparency from her university. She knew they had promised to hire an external ?rm to conduct an investigation, but wondered whether ?nal reports or summaries would be fully public.“That why I’m ?ghting for student representation throughout this process.” “I wanted to stress that I am hopeful,” Landry adds.“Right now, I really want to work with the administration, and I’m really hopeful that they do reach out to speak with us.” “I want to see where we can go from here.I want to ?ght for survivors,” she adds.“But I’m committing myself to keeping them accountable throughout this extreme heat and wild?res in Siberia in 2020 and 2021; and the “heat dome” over western North America at the end of June 2021.These events are so far “off scale” in comparison to past historic extreme events that climate modellers assert that they would not have happened or would not have been as severe were it not for climate change.Such events are consistent with predictions made by atmospheric scientists that weather extremes will become more frequent and more severe as Earth’s climate continues to warm.PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW The Record Your Weekly Guide to Townships Culture November 19 - November 25, 2021 TALK Jessie Pelletier Country Connection 184 Queen Street, Sherbrooke (downtown Lennoxville) The Broadcast Voice of the Eastern Townships Report News: 819-570-2094 Advertising: 819-570-2094 819-822-1838 www.cjmq.fm email: cjmqnews@yahoo.ca CJMQ offers a 365 days-per-year, 24 hour programming life with a vast selection of DJs and shows as well as quality variety programming. This benefits our listeners who have a unique opportunity to enjoy a quality, relevant English-language broadcast. You can dance if you want to They are back! BARRON CASTONGUAY, Diane – November 13, 2021 PELCHAT, Paul – November 8, 2021 GREEN, Elizabeth Ethel – November 9, 2021 Studies indicate ?tness trackers can predict illness ASK THE DOCTORS by Eve Glazier, M.D., and Elizabeth Ko, M.D.Dear Doctors: My husband caught a cold this summer, and he swears the readings from his ?tness tracker a few days before warned him that he was about to be sick.Do you think that’s really possible?Dear Reader: Your husband’s observations about how changes in the data from his ?tness tracker preceded the onset of a cold actually dovetail with the ?ndings of a study that were published at the start of the year. And it’s not the ?rst research of its kind to make the connection. With millions of people now using ?tness trackers, scientists are diving into the trove of uploaded data to see what the details may be able to reveal about public health. For anyone unfamiliar with ?tness trackers, they’re wearable sensors, much like a wristwatch, that measure a range of activity and health metrics.Depending on the device - there are dozens of different brands and types - ?tness trackers measure steps taken, total mileage, speed, direction, elevation climbed and duration of activity. On the physiological side of things, they can track heart rate, heart rhythms, skin temperature and minutes of sleep. Some manufacturers even claim that, using motion sensors and algorithms, their models can map how long someone spends in the various stages of sleep.(Full disclosure: Many sleep specialists are skeptical about the accuracy of the sleep-stage results.) In a recent study, researchers from the Scripps Research Translational Institute analyzed data collected from the ?tness trackers of 47,000 adult women and men.Using a minimum of two months’ worth of readings taken over the course of two years, which included activity, heart rate and sleep, the researchers found that their predictions of regional ?u outbreaks matched the statistical data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during those same time periods. An earlier study, published by researchers at Stanford University in early 2017, had come to similar conclusions. In that study, the scientists collected 250,000 daily readings from just 43 individuals over the course of a year. The participants wore a range of biosensors, which collected information about daily activity, heart rate, oxygen saturation levels, skin temperature and sleep data. They even tracked exposure to radiation, such as the X-rays and gamma rays encountered in air travel. As with the Scripps study, certain changes to the readings collected by the wearable sensors predicted coming down with a cold or the ?u.These changes included persistent increases in resting heart rate, which were coupled with increases to daily sleep. One of the Stanford scientists, who was also a participant in the study, noticed he had an increased heart rate and a decrease in blood oxygen saturation. It turned out that he didn’t have a cold; instead, the data from the eight different biosensors he was wearing for the study led to an early diagnosis of Lyme disease, before any other symptoms of the condition had appeared. It’s a fascinating line of inquiry that no surprise, is getting additional study In the meantime, listen to your body, stay home if you think you’re getting sick and please, get your ?u shot.(Eve Glazier, M.D., MBA, is an internist and associate professor of medicine at UCLA Health Elizabeth Ko, M.D., is an internist and assistant professor of medicine at UCLA Health.) they require effort from both parties. If he’s unwilling to make your needs one of his priorities - by at least going to couples counseling - perhaps this is not a marriage you want to be in.Your grandchildren deserve the most joyful, affectionate version of yourself that you can give them. That’s far more important than who Grandma shares a house with.Dear Annie: I’ve had a girlfriend for two years. When COVID hit, she was with me 24/7.Now that COVID has died down, she does not hang out with me.I have not seen her for four weeks. She works way too much and travels with her daughter for swim. When I tell her I love her over text, she just sends me hearts. She doesn’t call or text me much.Do you think I should end this relationship and move on?Because to be honest, I don’t see it going anywhere.I have kind of lost interest with her.We were engaged, and she always wore her ring. Now she does not wear it anymore.I’m confused. Please help.- Am I an Ex?Dear Am I: It sounds like your girlfriend/?ancee has both feet out the door. She’s been gradually ghosting you, and now you’re left in the dust, alone and confused.Though puzzling for you, this is a blessing in disguise. If you don’t see a future and you’ve lost interest in her, too, then you aren’t really losing much; you’re gaining an opportunity to move on and up with your life.Make contact with this woman and of?cially break things off.Put it all out on the table and get the clarity you need to put your confusion to bed.You have a whole new chapter waiting for you - may it be with someone who never leaves you guessing where you stand.“Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now!
