Montreal and vice versa, are taking advantage, in large numbers, of the winter road across the ice which, ay already reported, was opened a few days ago. This ice road, which for several years has been constructed and maintained by the city of Montreal and the corporation of Longueuil, each bearing halt the cost, is a work of considerable magnitude, and involves much labor. For several weeks past as many as seventy-five men have been cngaged in its construction, and a dozen or more are necessary to keep it in repair. On Saturday last pedestrians made their way across, but it was not until Monday that the first ‘bus’ made Ita trial trip.Last year, owing to the season being unusually open, it was well on in February before the authorities considered it advisable to have the road constructed.According to the opinions of %nany conversant for several years past with river conditions, they consider the present season unusually early for the road to be in use.No far as tlre eye can see the only palch of open water near the city lies between the Victoria pier and the Hochelaga wharf, nearly opposite the (Canadian Rubber (‘ompany’'s works. In this open space.which lies along the course of the channel, there is no floating ice, and that which forms its rim, appears to be quite firm. The ice is of varying thickness, Not far from the 1ce road it 1s more than two feet thick, and several men ure already engaged in cutting it.; I'he water in the harbor is quite low, and fell nearly three feet yesterday.so that no danger is anticipated.Mr.Fennel, of the harbor Australia and New Zealand.AMERICANS MAY SECURE IT IF CANADIANS DO NOT TAKE ACTION.“The United States Government is talking of policing the Pacific and their congress 18 passing laws increasing steamship subsidies and doing what they can to encourage trade with Australia. If Canadians want to hold the business for this country they must give the (anadian- Australian line encouragement.and let them know that for a term of years a fixed sum is forthcoming, so that the company can build on it and improve accordingly.’ This was the statement made by Mr.William Stitt, general passenger agent of the Canada-Australia -tea-nship service, which operates for the Antipodzs in connection with the Canadian Pacific Railway.Mr.Stitt has just arrived in Montreal from Sydney, Australia.where he has been stationed ior the past tive Years.[is visit to headquarters is in connection with the redwstribution of work and offices in the C.P.R.steamship department.Mr.Stitt has decided opinions about the importance of the Australian and New Zealand markets, and as a loyal Canadian, he wants to see Canada take advantage of the splendid opportunity which offers. The New Zealand Government, he says, has agreed to give a subsidy of a hundred thousand dollars yearly for a mail service between New Zca- fand and Canada, and he believes that eventually the Canadian-Australian liners will call at Auckland, New Zealand. The proposals are that the company shall place faster and better steamers on the run, and alter the schedule so that instead of having the liners call at Brisbane, tive hundred miles farther norih frem Sydney, they would proceed on the same latitude twelve bundred and cighty miles to Auckland, and thence continue to Victoria and Vancouver via Suva and Honolulu as at present. The bill for the mail subsidy passed by the New Zealand (Government offers the hundred thousand dollars referred to for a iri-weekly service between New Zea land and British Columbia, with at least six-thousand-ton passenger and freight steamers, with cold storage arrangements and modern conveniences, to make the trip from port to port, from Auckland to Vancouver.and vice versa, in vighteen days. This would call for steamers with à speed of scvent:en knots an hour. The trade between Canada and Australia, Mr.Stitt says, has greatly 1n- creased since he went to the Antipodes five years ago, and he belicves it would be trebled if there were a better steamship service.Australia will take al} that Canada can send. There is hardly an article produced in Canada that will not find a market in Australia.‘The bulk of the Australian trade, he went on to say, ‘is with Great Britain, but Germany, France, Belgium and the United States are excellent customers for wool. The Conservatives, who are Protectionists, and who hold the reins of power, say that these countries are bound to go to Australia for wool, and so long as they keep a tariff wall against Australia, the latter should extend a reciprocal basis of trade with Great Britain and her colonies.‘I think an arrangement of this kind will ultimately be reached, as it is the desire of the Australians to cultivate, as far as they can, the trade with Canada. They have already -done something to assist you, as on certain goods the duties on which are ad valorem at point of origin, they have made an exception in favor of Vancouver by only charging duty to the nearest seaport (it may be Montreal or New York), even though the freight comes to Vancouver.‘There is great business in sight, and it behooves the Dominion Government to do what it can to secure this business, otherwise the United States will take away something of what Canada has already got ‘Does the Australian show a partiality the Canadian route” ‘He undoubtedly does, for during 1905 the Canadian-Australian route brought into and took out of Vancouver about 3,000 passengers.Every Australian spends money lavishly.so that this business has meant a good deal for Canada.’ Speaking on general conditions in Australia.Mr.Stitt said business in that country was never so bright as at present.‘It is now almost three years since the calamitous years of the drought, and already there are as many sheep and cattle as Australia had at the commencement of the dry weather. The wool clip thus | year will be -the biggest on record, and prices are better than ever they were.Mutton, butter.and articles of that sort, which the country exports largely.never commanded better prices.Tin and copper is being mined at great profit, and the gold fields and coal mines were never worked more profitably.Altogether Australia is in a very prosperous condition. Before leaving Sydney.Mr.Stitt was entertained by the lord Mayor of the city.and presented with an illuminated address and purse of sovereigns as a token of the city's appreciation of the way in which he had managed the affairs of the Canadian-Australian line at that end.to PLANS ARE READY.MILLIONS AT THE DISPOSAL OF THE NEW LIGHT COMPANY.Mr.Du Tremblay.counsel for the new ' Merchants’ Ligit and Power Company,” which will seek incorporation C.Browne, the convicted former customs silk examiner, for a new trial, on the ground that the bail bond of $12,500, alleged to have been forfeited by Browne, was improperly taken. The Court ruled that the failure of Browne to respond to his name when called for sentence, coupled with the issuance of a bench warrant, constituted prima facie evidence of the forfeiture of his bail.I'he chief object of the motion was to test the validity of the bond, and the decision will force Browne's sureties to make it good unless the decision is re versed in the higher courts.Browne was convisted of conspiracy to defraud the Federal Government by passing silks on underestimated invoices. After his alleged jumping of his bail beod, he was arrested in Canada.‘The Canadian Government refused to exira- dite him on the ground that conspiracy was not an extraditable offence, because it was not mentioned in the extradition treaty.Browne was next arrested in Montreal.and eventually extradited on an untried indictment still pending against him in New York.On his way back here a United States marshal seized him and took him to Sing Sinng to serve out the sentence for which he was convicted. The courts ruled that proceeding irregular and ordered his release. He is now out on bail, pending trial on the untried indictment for which he was extradited.——— IN DANGER OF LYNCHINQ COLORED OPENS AT NEW YORK.New York, Dec.27—The roncentra- tion of wealth in the hands of compara tively few persons was vigorously denounced and just as earnestly defended at the opening sessions of the fifty-sev- enth annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science to-day.In a paper on the ‘Concentration of wealth,’ Mr.Henry Laurens Call, of Washington, attacked the right of John D.Rockefeller to his fortune, on the grounds that it was not the result of natural causes, but had been created through the activity of corporations, which the speaker termed ‘vicious.’ During a subsequent discussion of ‘The evolution of wroperty, louis G.Me: Pherson, assistant to the late Samuel Spencer, as president of the Southern Railway, answered Mr.Call.He de clared that Mr.Rockefeller had had his financial struggles, and had done much good, which was generally lost sight of in the criticism which came with success. He told of Mr.Rockefeller's early attempt to secure $25,000, with which to construct a pipe line for oil.One man who refused ald met the financier when the pipe line had been laid.To him Rockefeller said: ‘I built that pipe line to make oil cheaper, and I succeeded.T cut the cost more than half, and yet they find fault.’ Mr.McPherson then, less seriously.told of a dinner party several years ago at the Rockefeller home.when Mrs.Rockefeller explained the absence of oysters by saying: ‘We like them but are too poor to have them.” This to illustrate Mr.McPherson's point that a man might be worth a hundred million do)- lars and still be short of ready cash if he kept his factories in operation.Wealth and railways were but two of many subjects discussed by well-known writers and speakers. After convening at Columbia University: where they were welcomed by President Nicholas Murray Butler, the several hundred scientists Separated into various groups, where Dr.W.H.Welsh, of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, the new head of the association, talked on nudicine; Mi.Charles A.Conant, of this city, on currency; Mr.John Y.Crowell, on the same subject; the vice-president, Mr.W.M.Rice, on geology; Mr.Richard I.Colburn, of this city, on price fluctuations, and others made informal comment.SCIENCE OF EDUCATION.The feature of tonight's session was the address of Dr.C.M.Woodward, of St.Louis, the retiring president, who spcke on the ‘Science of education.’ Dr.Woodward agreed with Huxley and others that there was no valid distinction between pure science and applied sclence, and pointed out that a healthy and timely growth and devélopment oi the brain was to be promoted by an education involving a great variety of activities.skilfully adjusted as to quality and quantity, to the mental and physi cal status of the child., T see nowhere,” he said, ‘in either ancient or modern times, a people whose youth bas been trained as our Americans should be trained.Neither Greece nor Rome, with their Pinnacles of culture resting on the barbarous foundation of human slavery, nor the blooded aristocracies of modern times, can teach us how to educate, train and adorn an American citizen. No narrow, selfish aim; no prejudice or caste, no false claim of high culture, which scorns service, must mislead the growing expanding minds.Give them a gencrous symetrical training; open wide the avenue of usefulness, to happiness.to power, and this age of scientific progress and material wealth shall be also an age of high intellectual and social achievement.’ From nine o'clock until eleven o'clock President Butler, of Columbia, received the members of the association in Earl Hall, and there was also a smoker for the members of the association at the Faculty Club.STATUS OF MEDICINE.President Welch, in his address, referring to the status of medicine in reference to the genoral sciences, said : “ Medicine stands in a very much more important place than ever before.Through the efforts of medicine, and through the development of the allied sciences, the power over discase has vastly increased in the last quarter of a century. It has come about largely by the scientitic development in the study of causation in ref: znce to infection of diseace.“lias important, excessively jmpor- tant, [ may say, that infectious diseases be restrained.Unless they are restrained, and the means are at hand to control them.suvh efforts as the building of the Panama Canal, the exploitation nf tropical countries, and even life in our large cities, would be impossible.” RRENCY ESTION.Cu QU Most interesiing.pechaps, among the several sectional meetings, was that of the economies session of the rection of somal and economic science.Mr, Chas.A.Conant.vice-presideat of the Morton Trust Companv of New York, and who presided as vice-president of the section, delivered the principal address on ‘Aspects of the currency question.’ There never was a time, he said.wnen peonle were more interested than now in banking reforms.Though it was too much to expect both Houses of Congress to pass a satisfactory measure, yet in due time such legislation must result.Otherwise our prosperity will be arrested our rapidly absorbed currency will prove entirely inadequate for business needs, both at home and in our competition with foreign nations.Ir the government will remove the out-of date and outgrown restrictions, and require proper security, there can be no danger to economic interests involved in the proposed bank reform, 'THE MOST ARTISTIC PHOTOGRAPI|, F RiDAT.DFCEMBE.IX.PRESENT COMPETITION CLOSES ON MONDAY Entries Crowding in During the Last Days of the Contest Have you sent in your entry for
