said that art might be defined as any activity which contains an emotional factor, or which is an end in itself, Thi is pure art, art for art's sake; but, as a rule, there is a practical activity vom- bined with the artistic one.Almost the only art which has no aim outside of itself is music. In every artistic activity, an outside observer 18 always presupposed, and the work is always designed with reference to the public, or at least to an ideal public. That it is not always the actual public, is shown by the fact that Beethoven’s public, the Viennese, found his sonatas utterly incomprehensible, while even the Athenian public were unable to understand the greatest of their sculptors, Phidias “The first of arts is the dance; not the modern dance; the ball and the stage ballet are degenerate; but the war dances of barbaric peoples, .which are mase-danees, teachin, order, harmony, and discipline. To the ancient Gree the dance was a very real form of expression, which had the disadvantage of not bein ay but the advantage of dealing with the most perfect of all materials, the human body; and their perfect sculpture was largely owing to its influence. Thus art may, and sometimès must be, conneeted with the study of sociology.Again, art must always be complemented by the understan of the ob- ‘server. Thus an educa Japanese would fail to understand Rembrandt's | picture of Christ healing the sick, and similarly we ¢annot grasp the meaning of a great dea] of Greek art, because we cannot ses it from.the standpoint of the ancient Athenians. Here archaeology an un aw Ts wi delivered the o eB- ew course on the nust De considered. The material in which work is executed has a great deal of influence upon the.work.This was illustrated by two casts, one of a marble bust, and one 4 a bronze one; the bronze being à ‘dar oP ue material, must be treated in har definite lines.while the semi- transparent marble was carved with curves and subtle gradations so fine that they did not show on the plaster cast. The lecture was illustrated with lan- tern-views of specimens of ancient art.MGR.FALCONIO AT ST.BONIFACE.Pan de Sept.28.—Mgr.Falconio, the Pa
