The witness had no personal knowledge of the matter, but he understood that the .Croil & McCullough Dairy Company's account was introduced to the bank by T.J.Chisholm.Neither was the witness personally aware if Chisholm made any arrangements at that time As to the rate of ‘interest to be charged or as to the amount of accommodation to be given. The first -eptry in the account was a‘ discount of a note, dated April 18, 1898, signed by the Croil & McCullough Dairy Company, Limited, A.McCullough, treasurer. It was payable on demand, for $20,000, was drawn to the order of John H.Croll, Esq., and was endorsed by him, by A.McCullough, Thos.J.Chisholm and D: J.McGiMis.The arrangement regarding that discount was that It was to be repald ac the rate of $800 a ‘month, and these payments were made regularly until February of this year, leaving a letter of hypothecation, signed by T.J.Chisholm, dated April 18, 1808,and addressed to the Merchants Bank of Halifax. It stated that in consideration of the bank making an advance to the Croil & McCullough Dairy Company of $20,000, payable on demand, with interest at 644 percent, he had ‘assigned to the bank, as collateral security for the due payment of the advance 200 -shares of stock in.the Montreal Cold Star- ago and Freezing Company, and having a value of $100 per share.amount not be paid, with interest,or should the sald stock depreciate, and the deprecta- tion not be made good, at any time during the continuance of the loan, the bank was authorized to sell or dispcse of any of the shares in such & manner as it might think advisable, and apply the proceeds towards the payment of the aavance, or Interest, or towards any balance of the same then due to the bank, and holding him (Chisholm) Hable for any deficiency on such obligation.-.The witness algo read a letter from the Croll & McCullough Dairy Company, dated April 5, 1898, signed by A.McCullough, vice- president, and addressed to the manager of the Merchants Bank of Halifax, Montreal. It stated the nature of the company’s busi- Mess and, as witness admitted to Mr.Quinn, was.virtually an application for $50.000 dur ing the year, to be advanced on warehouse receipts, and from £100,000 to £125,000 exchange to sell.~.MINING STOCK" TRANSACTIONS, Witness.also stated that h I Chisholm was in the habit of mentioning Lip gold mines at the bank.H trfasection whatever with Chisholm in con- settion with the mines. The bank made ne | advance on mining stock ; it simply took © fha chares for what thev were worth. It Whe Baily Witness, ‘$2,400 still unpaid. The witness then read { Shouid the above ur- | e could not say- He had no WONDER: LAND ! of the letter was handed to the > HOD sde Who, after reading it, Was.willing to allbw certain portions to be read.In cog- nection with one of the paragraphs thus adn mitfed, the Crown wanted some explanation made so that it would be clear to the jurys and in connection with other portions, the defence held that it was necessary that some of the deleted portions should be retained in order to make the others intelli- ible.as it was not deemed advisable to argue the matter before the jury, and as it was nedr the hour of adjournment, the jury were retired for the day.Upon their withdrawal, Mr.Quinn argued for the reading of the entire letter, holding that it was in the interests of the present case that this be done.He had not completed his argument, however, when the court intimated that as it would have to give some atten- tioh ‘during the evening to the application.made at the morning session, further argument had better be postponed until this ‘morning. The court then adjourned.———————— _ .SPORTS AND PASTIMES.BOWLING.OFFICERS’ COMPETITION.The officers of the active and the reserve forces held a bowling -competition at the Victoria Rifles’ armory last evening, which proved to be more than usually interesting. The following scores show the merits of the players: Three Strings.Active Officers.Reserve Officers.Capt.Gorman .Capt.Bell .308 Lt.McGill .489 Major Meakins .487 Lt.Hagar .498 Major Bacon .477 Capt.Hiam .563 Lt:-Col.Starke .420 Capt.Fisher .541 Lt.Brown .491 Capt.Stewart .546 Lt.-Col.Busteed .454 Total .8,180 Total .2,722 Majority for Active Officers, 468.Flat Hand, Ona String—8econd Match.“ Reserve Officers._ Active Qfficers.Lo arte” = Py Sen .128 spt.Beli .14 Copt.Hiam .Total .Total .876 - Majority for Reserve Officers, 15.FOOTBALL.ONTARIO CONFERENCE.Toronte, Nov.26.—A conference of representatives of four senior clubs of the Ontario Rugby Football Union, was held on fiaturday night at the Rossin House. The meeting was called for the purpose of discussing proposed amendments to the constitution, rules and regulations of the O.FY.The following representatives were present: .cama Rok, Shillington, D'Arcy Mer and Mr.Godfre y \\ Hamilton—D, Gillies, W.A.Leggatt and ‘Jack* Counsell.; considerations, the exclusion of such men as Mr.Bérgeron and the Hon.George E.Foster from par- Lament must appear as a distinet toss to the country. They are not only representative men in the fullest sense of the term, but also parliamentarians of training and skill who bring te the discussion of public affairs intellectual familiarity with the complex interests likely to be affected by legislation. The country can ill afford to dispense with their services simply because one constituency among hundreds happens to reject them. The interests of the party in securing seats in parliament for its leaders are important, no doubt, but the interests of the country at large are much greater. It is therefore to be hoped that the Opposition will be able to arrange matters so that both these Conservative leaders may find seats. This cannot be done, however, until after the meeting of parliament as 2 member can only resign hie | seat to a Speaker of the House -of Commons, and until the House meets and elects a Speaker a vacancy cen only be caused by death.mr It is only in accordance with historical precedent that a soldier like Lord Kitchener should have bitter enemies, who decry his character and condemn the alleged severity of his methods. The Duke of Wellington had to suffer at the hands of like-minded critics, and even ‘Washington, the father of his country, who now holds the place of a demigod among his countrymen; not only felt the shafts of envy and malice, but had to endure personal insult and violence from those among his compatriots who hated him for much the same firmness of character which distinguishes Lord Kitchener. But a man in supreme command of an army in the field has to deal with circumstances and; must face conditions, of which those who never had anything to do with the treacheries of war can have no conception.A generul with a reputation for sternness and unflinching THE MONIKEAL DAILY WITi(ESS.LS ‘devotion to the purpose he has in hand, ‘possesses in the fact of that reputation à power of control over his own troops, and an influence with those opposed to, him which a general not so distinguished could never hope to exercise. But in dealing with irregular fighters of primitive proclivities, there i» a danger of gentle methods being construed as signs of weakness.Boers are not less vain than more cultured people, whom we see every “day accepting the generous kindness of others as tributes to their own superlative merits.War is a terrible thing, but the sooner its meaning is brought clearly before the eyes of those who persist in carrying it on the better for them and their country, so long as the principles of justice and humanity are not violated.ees The monthly statement of the Canadian banks for October is gratifying evidence that Canadian prosperity continues on the increase. The deposits of the public with and without interest amount to $310,500,878, compared.with $306,187, 310 last month and $272,887,238 for October last year, an increase of $4,313,568 and $37, 663,640 respectively.Notes in circulation last month were $53,198,777, compared with $50,387,070 in September and $49,588,236 in October a year ago, an expansion in the first case of $2,811,707, and in the second of $3,610,541.A notable increase is also shown in the advances by the banks to their customers, the current loans and discounts last month amounting to $205,219,705, compared with $290,670,- 506 last month and #259,848,951 in October last year, or an increase of $4,549,109 in a month and $35,370,754 in twelve months.Call loans in Canada amounted to $32,347,947 last month, compared with $30,786,953 in September, and cal loans abroad amounted to $28,775, 146 last month, compared with $29,- 749,949 in September, the total increase for the month amounting to $586,191, nadian chartered banks now amount to in the neighborhood of $500,000,000, of which nearly 40 percent are readily available. The grand total of the -paid up capital amounts to $66,264,967, end of the reserve funds to $33,897,647, or 51.15 percent of the capital, + BS The aggregate assets of 36 Ca- | socidtion “yesterday passed 3 resolution: emphasizing the neeessity in the inter ests of justice and commercial morality, , for the arrest of Thos.J.Chisholm, the suspected arch-conspirator in the warehouse receipt frauds, who is now a fugitive from justice.A letter on the lines of the resolution has been forwarded to the Attorney-General of this province, and it is to be hoped that he will spare Bo effort to uphold the dignity of the law.Chisholm is one of two men charged with grave offences who have broken their bail bonds recently, and it is time that the matter of accepting bail for eriminal offendera should be considered more seriously. In the case of Chisholm, whose slippery character was well known, and who was charged with offences .of peculiar impudence and of alarming dimensions, the bail should have been heavy enough, and his bondsmen required to be of such financial standing as to constitute real instead of almost nominal barriers to his flight from justice.Instead of that being done, however, Chisholm was released on what was generally regarded as straw bail. Now that the principal has escaped, the lesser offenders are held in heavy bonds, which insures their presence and the receipt of a fair trial The crimes for which Chis holm is principally held responsible.are calculated to setiously injure the machij: ery very largely by means of which our | butker and cheese men did a business last year exceeding twenty million dollars, and his trial is necessary both in the iu- terests of justice and public morality and also that the whole course of the conspiracy may be traced and exposed. In his absence, public Knowledge of the conspiracy and its many dark ramifications will be.only partial.Chisholm’s location js said to be known and the authorities should do their utmost to bring him to justice.- etl THE WRONG SEED.Dr.Eaton, in preaching at the opening of the Point St.Charles Baptist Church on ‘the reign of the common people, placed this limitation, among others, on the triumph of demoeracy, that it was, efter all, very much a matter of race. This consideration is very important in connection.with" the immigration with which our ew, country is filling up.The alienation of all.our best lande.to raftvaÿ companies has had the effect of keeping | with that of the government.the meighborhood of our railways largely unoccupied, while remote regions are all that our immigration department has to offer to the incoming agriculturigts which it is eeeking to introduce to the country. It so comes that it is almost of no use to offer our free lands to English-speak- ing people anywhere, and the great majority of our immigrants belong to races which, whatever may be their future development, have not in the past evinced that fitness for self-government which gives assurance of the noblest nation- building. They are, moreover, of races alien to our own and to each other, with different languages and social conceptions, and will for this reason take the longer to coalesce. Many of these peoples are still living in primitive communal conditions.Indeed, such remote regions as we have to dispose of, offer far greater temptations to communities than to individual settlers. This community settlement must be accounted one of the disadvantages.of.settling .the zremoter lande firat, as foreign people’ established in communities are far more likely to be tenacious of their segregating traditions than if they could be mixed with English communities already established.Another evil of the plan on which we are working is that it tends to discourage the immediate sale of railway lands. All the work the government is doing to get people into the country is practically a gift to the land-owning companies, appreciating their lands at less than no cost to them and enabling them to demand higher and higher prices for such as they dispose of.It will po doubt be answered that the companies are quite as much interested in the disposing of their lands as the government can pessibly be, and are quite as much in earnest about it.That is true, but then their interest in eettling the land is far from identical The one object of the government is to get people on to the land ; the value of the land is no consideration at all.Whereas, much as the Canadian Pacific or the Hudson’s Bay Company want to get people into the country, the price they can get for their lands is very much of a çonsid- ération with them—with the latter company, indeed, the only consideration. As dar es merely eettling the -country goes, - .i= | they would, at anything approaching free.?The Moittreal Bitter” arid “cod É ‘gant rates, very much prefer to’ Beasath- { ‘er lands settled than their own, We do net at all wish to depreciate the peoples who are coming in such numbers to live with us, some of whom are singularly noble and virtuous ; but in the interesbs of nation-building ,we deplore the conditions which seem to prevent a dominant Anglo- Saxon migration such as was the making of the United States. The United States nation is a motley mixture of all the peoples scattered from Babel, yet no one can scan the names of the leading men of any part of the republic without real izing that the Anglo-Celtic people who first took possession are everywhere the .dominant element.treet YOUNG MEN IN POLITICS.A western Conservative newspaper tells the Conservative party that one of the causes to which it owes defeat is the absence of young mem from the counsels and the ccemmander’s staff of the party, and their presence in large numbers among the leaders, as well as the rank and file, of the Läberal party. It says that enthusiastic young men are needed among the leaders of a party in order to excite both the generous and the ambitious instinots :of youth.Ambitious | young men will join a- ‘party which.en- ourages and rewands energetic: ‘and: suc- censful Young men and young.men of generous feelings ‘will always respond to the appeals of young men like themselves who are making their way to the top. These seem to be the chief, if not the only, arguments which ocour to this western paper as likely to influence a polit‘cal party to welcome young men to political life. They are not the highest argumerts, but they are practical ones. You .g men who are impressionable, san- guine and enterprising, who are therefore more open to the impressions which currents of public opinion impart, more hopeful of the results which may ‘follow and more willing to embark upon fresh courses, should have their share in the counsels of any body of men, though the older and more experienced should perhaps predominate. Then, of course, the young men are strong and energetic and their activity is likely to be more enthusiastically and effectively enlisted in any cause in whose shaping they have had a share and in whose success therefore their pride is engaged. And it is obvious that the future belongs Turspay, NOVEMBER Z/, 1900.to the party which enlists the sympathies and services of the young. We hove not observed that the Conservative party has been in the habit of snubbing or rebuffing young men—but rather the contrary. If it has been doing so it has altered its course during the last ten years, as, before that period at least, it Had the support of the majority of young men, who took an active interest in politics. But we think the reason for the popularity of the Conservative party fifteen and twenty years ago was the magnificence of the promises ii held out by its National Policy. The times had been hard, so that even older people were willing to try anything fora change and the young were caught by the novelty of a sudden and complete change from free trade to protection. The Conservative party of that day seemed to many young people like & noble company of adventurers setting forth upon an enterprise, whose hazard récommend- d Older men who ‘give in their adhesion to it were ‘interested, as a rule, in the direct benefits they expected from the protection of their business against outside ccmpetition.Young men full of hope, which they were willing to invest in aay novel national undertaking, enlisted la the national policy campaign. The Conservatives stuck to the National Poi- icy for seventeen years, until those who as young men had supported it at its inception had grown older and wiser, and till another generation had come to young manhood for whom the policy wae an old and overworn one.Sir John Thompson and Mr.Foster were not permitted to reconstruct the policy and the Coneer- vative party stuck to it until it went to pieces under them, and their captains have gene down with the ship.Sir Wilfrid Lauriers personality and policy have probably become inspirations to che imaginative young men of high ideals and hopes of the period that has followed. He is the first imperialist of his time and his policy is the most imperialistic that has yet been adopted by eny of the nations of the Empire. His ideals and motives are obviously high and disinterested. His domestic policy for the friendship, fraternity and unity of Canadians of all races and religious is a noble and rightone. The prosperity and progress of the country at once strengthen” sud “etilnplaten’ hg hopes of the.youpg men.The the right appeal to young men to interest and occupy themselves in politics is not based upon their ow.ambition but upon their am- bitiors for their country; from motives of patriotism to study and promote its welfare as far as lies in their power. To establish their nation in righteousness; that is the highest motive upon which a young man can act in entering politics. And the political parties whick desire to attract young men should make their appeals to the noblest and highest motives.YOUNG MEN NEEDED IN POLITICS.(Winnipeg ‘Telegram.’) The true policy of the Conservative party to-day is to give every possible encouragement to the young men in its ranks, and to attract to its ranks as many young men from outside its ranks as can possibly be attracted.Young men must be encouraged to aspire to public positions, to take their place in the counsels of the party, and to accept prominent po- eitions in organization work.It is only by such means that the party can keep in touch with new ideas and succeastully appeal to the present generation.Sir Wilfrid Laurier has shown young men that in the Liberal party the young man gets his chance. He has been em- ‘abled to attach, to his cause young men who take a generous interest the @ is" Cone who from motive “of sifinter- est are asiduons to Wopship what they conceive to be a rising star.In Manitoba politics Mr.J.D.Cameron has been taken up and puched forward, with the result that he swings a large number of young men, who otherwise might be Conservative, into the Liberal lines on polling day.If the Conservative party in Winnipeg looks over the names on its executives and scans its list of party workers it will be astonished to find how small e proportion of young men are among them.Let it, also, take a census of the number of young men who attend the meetings of its associations, and mark how few there are.Where does the Conservative party expect to get its future candidates, its future workers, its future supporters, if not from the young men ?Winnipeg is but instanced as a specimen conatitueney. The same causes which have caused such a dearth of young Conservatives available as candidates: and workers here have caused the dearth eof young men of ability which exists in the Conservative ranks at Ottawa to-day.The young man to-day should be given every possible chance. If he does not care to push’ himself forward.he chould be taken hold of and pushed forward. When lopking for candidates.the- first man’ thought of should not be: the medi- in promoting ocrity whose only recommendation is thay he can provide a campaign fund - ; but te young man of energy, originality and cb: ity, who is ambitious to make à name Sot himself, and to do intellectual servi e far his Conservative party show itself in sympathy with the times, let it encourage such junior talent as it has in its rank: and make assiduous efforts to attract tie rising generation, and it has before it, at no distant day, a period of influence and power in no wise inferior to that brilliant succession of triumphs which it achieved during the first two decades of Confederation.Der, —_— CATHOLIC MISSIONS IN AFRICA.The Rev.Father Forbes, of the congregation of African Missionaries founded by the late Cardinal Lavigerie, gave a very interesting lecture before the members of the Umion pleasure to see you all here, and to thank you for your loyal service and devotion to myself and the Empire.’ The grey towers of Windsor Castle were lost in a mist of vapoury rain yesterday when the Colonial contingent from Shorncliffe visited Her Majesty for review. The Queen had expressed a special wish to see these sons of the Empire owing to the previous two parties having visited Windsor while the Court was at Balmoral. This, then, was the firgt Royal review of Colonials who have taken part in the South African war, and Her Majesty marked the occasion by a personal address of thanke—the first given to the Colonials.; The Colonials, about a hundred in number, reached Windsor at 10.30 from Oxford, which they had been wisitin on the previous day. They were joine at the station by a contingent from London, the whole being under the command of Major Singe, of the Highland Light Infantry, whose scarlet and tartan formed a striking contrast to the brown kit of his command.Mr.Mayor Reavell tendered a civic welcome, and the men formed in column of route and marched to Victoria bar- backs.FROM MANY LANDS.The’ contingent was probably the most representative that has been got together apart from the Jubilee review.Bushmen of the far south formed sections with police of the icy North-West; Columbians, tall, straight, and gaunt, sided up with the thick-set, sun-tanne New Zealanders and the lithe Britishers of the Cape.; The First Grenadier Guards gave them a hearty welcome in barracks, where, divesting themselves of their overcoats, the Colonials marched in campaign khaki to Windsor Castle.Owing to the inclement weather, the arede was held within the building.e men proceeded by Castle Hill and St.George's gate, where they were received by the Master of the Household, who had them conducted through the state apartments prior to the reception. At twenty minutes past twelve the Queen was wheeled in her chair br, an Indian attendant into St.George's all, being accompanied by Princess Hen Battenberg and her children, the Dow- Countess of Erroll, the Hon.Judith Harbord, the Hon.Aline Majendie and the Hon.Mrs.Mallet.The household staff in attendance also included Sir Arthur Bigge, Lord Edward Pelham-Clinton, Sir James Reid, Captain Fritz Ponsonby and Captain Drum- mond. The Queen, who looked remarkabl well, chatted with those about her, an contingent, and the Queen spoke graciously to him as he limped up on his sticks.‘I am sorry,” Her Majesty said, tenderly, ‘that you have lost the use of vour legs. You have ht some very fine men. What onies do they come from?‘From every one of your Colonies, Madam,” replied the chaplain, proudly, and then the men came up to the Queen in regimental batches. The first section consisted of four stalwart fellows, an Englishman, Irishman, Welshman and a Scot, who had come from various colonies to join their old home corps of the Imperial Yeomanry for service. The broad-shouldered Bushmen and Lancers and Horse of Australia came up with a ‘click’ and a salute. The Queen had seen some of these corps on other occasions.and greeted them as old ac- Te come anything near an ade- uate conception of what the hope cf the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ meant to the first Christians. In it they lived and moved and had ther being.Alas! for the purest of mortal hopes. The kingdom of love was not set up by the Loving One in n on the earth. The childhood of the Christian Church did not pass into its manhood, nor did its blurred vision grow clear, in the first ages.It had to see, for long centuries, as through a glass darkly. After nineteen centuries have run their course, he would be a bold Christian to-day who would assert that he knew, even as was known, The Christian community still knew only in part. That early hope so tender and so strong was not to fulfilled—indeed, could not then, and could never be ful- ed.A belief so fraught with disappointment had not been ‘based, Dr.Hill thought, on the message of the angel on Mount Olivet on Christ's ascension, but was simply the old Jewish faith and hope in a Messiah transformed into a Christian faith and hope. Both clothed their Messiah in much the same attributes; both assigned to him much the same functions.Only, the Christian deal was broader than the Jewi Messiah of the Jews was to King of Israel—Great David's Greater Son; the Christian’s Messiah waa tobe ‘a light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of his people Israel,” as the broadminded Luke put it.It was a simple, pure, unselfish hope.= Such 'was the explanation of the origin and development of a belief which exeér- i so important an influence on the fortunes of the early Church, and without due appreciation of which it was impossible to interpret the New Testament Scriptures intelligently. It was as vain an expectation as its Jewish proto- Lord did not return. He was to come again in spirit only, and he had heen coming again, in that fashion, ever since he ascended, wherever he could find a church faithful enough, or a heart pure enough to welcome him.Well was it for the early Church that the Master did not come again in -the manner they expected.Disappointed as they were, when he did not come quickly.they would have been more pointed had he come as they desired.he veil of flesh would have intervened to obscure his beauty and impede his power in the second advent, as it had in the first. If those who companied with him in closest fellowship for three years never realized, while he was with them, the true character of his kingdom, how should they realize it better when he returned to dwell among them in heavenly splendor and authority?“And if.his foes were not converted by the soenes and incidents of his first advent, what hope was there that they would be converted by the second?oreover, this personal-reign-of-Christ idea was oid isap- - quite foreign to the spirit of Christianity.Men and women were not to be awed into submission to the Cross of Christ by the outward bols of ‘regal state and majesty.Such a submission would mean nothing in a religious sense.among’ mord sti Hespousible.” was t © power of the Spirit of the Tia For such conversion the fleshly Christ was a hindrance before, In point of fact, the Saviour’s going from his disciples was the beginning of lus coming to them for the first time.Could the Lord have come, as the early Church expected, they would have had to sigh in tears, ‘still we see through a glass darkly’ They would have found out that something more than geographical nearness is needed to bring spiritual beings into true —spirtual communion and affnity. It was the mind that made its world.None the less true was it the soul that made its own Christ.Nearly all nt took part in the discussion of Dr.Hill's paper, which was especially admired for ite breadth and kindliness, The Rev.Mr.Reid asked how Dr.Hill reconciled his views with Matthew xxiv., 27: ‘For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be,’ or Matthew xxv.a ‘The Som of Man shall come in his ory, an e y angels with him’ The Rev.Dr.Eaton remarked that we npeeded to remember that our oughts were not: hs God’s thoughts. We thought as creatures of time, while God was of eternity. There wis no d “of God forgetting to send his-Son the danger was thht the.have become.discon: urch would ben {04 Se orugis cé Motnt Bog.discoureg by Jong waiting and would cesss to look | { x, for our Lord's’ appearing. While the hope of his return was one that must sustain and bless, yet our duty was to strip for the -conflict and do our best day by day, so that when he did come he would find faith on the earth.—— INTERESTING DOG LICENSE CASE.| A petition presented in the Practice Court yesterday by Mr.R.M.Harper wes oontinued to to-day.The petitioner, E.8S.Reynolds, asks a writ of certiorari against a judgment rendered by Recorder Weir. The allegations are as follows : Mr.Reynolds says that he is separated as to property from his wife, who keeps a boarding house in her own name on MoGill College avenue. On Nov.l4 à wfit was served at their residence summoning Mrs.E.S.Reynolds to appear before the Recorder on a charge of keeping an unlicensed dog.At the date fixed Mr.Reynolds appeared in court, and, notwithstanding the explanations offered by him, was sentenced to pay a fine of $4 and costs on the ground that under a certain by-law he should see that dogs in his wife's boarding house should all be licensed. The fine was paid under protest, and Mr.Reynolds now takes out the present proceedings on the ground that the sentence is illegal inasmuch as the by-law referred to had.been- repealed at the time.TO BRING BACK CHISHOLM, Butter and Cheese Men Petition Attorney General.MR.PEASE, GENERAL MANAGER OF THE BANK OF HALIFAX, PRESENT AT THE MEETING.An important meeting of the Montreal Butter and Cheese Association was held in the committee room of the Board of Trade yesterday, at which it was resolved that ‘this association considers it of the utmost importance in the interests of justice and commercialÿmorality that the provincial authorities should spare no effort nor expense to secure the arrest of T.J.Chisholm,” and Messrs.A.J.Brice, A.C.Wieland and P.W, McLagan were appointed a committee to draft a letter to the Attorney-General on the lines of the resolution. The occasion was rendered the more interesting from the fact that, although the press bad been invited to be present at the meeting by members individually, the representatives of the press .found themselves excluded from the room when they sought admittance.Mr.Pease, general manager of the Merchants Bank of Halifax, was admitted to the meeting, and, this being known, a note was sent to the president from the representatives of the various papers asking whether they were to be admitted or not,.Time went by, during which a vote was taken, and it was resolved not to admit the press. The attendance of Mr.Pease and the secrecy of the meeting naturally were much commented upon on Change, and many conjectures were hazarded.res MOUNT ROYAL.MR.BUCHAN THINKS IT WAS NOT A VOLCANO.At the monthly meeting of the Natural History Society, lest evening, two interesting papers were read, one by Mr.A.E.Norris, on the ‘Life history of the Camberwell Beauty Buiterfly,” and one by Mr.J.8.Buchan, Q.C., B.C.L., on ‘Was Mount Royal an active volcano # The Camberwell Beauty, Mr.Norris said, is one of the commonest butterflies, occurring all ‘over the temperate parts of North America end Europe. It hibernates in some sheltered nook, and comes out on the first warm day.It mates in Muy, and lays about 450 eggs, which hatch in June, into caterpillars, These in time become chryealids, from which the butterfly emerges twelve days later.Just before forming the chryealis, however, it is often stung by the ichneumon fly, which lays 130 eggs in its body. These hateh out rapidly, and the resulting maggots feed on the body of the chrysalis until there is nothing left.MOUNT ROYAL NOT A VOLCANO.“Ms, J.5.Buchan then stated bin tain, he eaid, had’ Been "mostly “swap away, in the millions of years that have elapsed since the mountain was formed, for the land surface at that tinfe was probably much higher than the present sammit of Mount Royal, but it seems probable that perhaps about 7,000,000 years ago (though this is purely conjectural) there was d shallow sea, extending from’ the Laurentian to the Adirondack mountains, An upward movement took place, producing the great fracture or line of disturbance which has been traced from the hills of Brome and Shefford to the Lac des Chats, on the Ottawa river, and whidh is marked by the mountaine of Brome, Shefford, Yamaska, Rouge- mont, Montarville, Mount Royal and Ri- gaud.Along the line of this fracture or disturbamce, at various places where the overlying strata had been weakened or forced apart, liquid or viscid rock was forced upwards until the cavity in the strata was completely filled.Where the fracture reached the surface, the lava would flow out over the surroumiling country, or a cone would be built up of ashies and ætones. If, on the contrary, the fracture did not reach the surface, the molten matter would be forced up as views 4.4 oto e mould ; the crust under which it - Tvusspary, Novemsær 27, 1900, cooled being removed in the course of time, the intrusive mass, being harder than the surrounding rock, would remain as a ‘bose’ of trap.Mr.Buchan considers that there is rea- gon to believe that Mount Royal belongs to the latter class.Had the ordinary volcanic phenomena been present, the resulting cone or sheets of lava might have protected the softer limestone strata from erosion ; but the strongest reason for this opinion is that the trap of which the mountain is composed presents a oom- pact and highly crystalline structure, which it could scarcely have shown had it not been consolidated under great pressure. While this intrusion of trap was taking place below, the limestone above was being worn away, till it finally reached its present level, and the hard lava protruded, forming the mountain.A discussion followed the paper, Dr.Adams, of McGill, pointing out that the great pressure which produced the hard and crystalline structure of Mount Royal might just as well have been produced by a volcanic cone. That this cone would have disappeared long ago is shown by the extinct volcanoes of central France, which, although incomparably more recent than Mount Royal, have their cones almost destroyed.Again, if the molten rock from below had forced its way in between two strata of limestone, it would have forced the upper one up into an arch, forming a ‘laccolite’ There is, however, no evidence of this; wherever the limestone meets the rap, it abuts directly against it, and is cut off, showing that there was probably a volcano.A close study of the series of mountains to which Mount Royal belongs seems to J show that Shefford and Brome mountains were laccolites, but Mount Royal and Ri- gaud were volcanic. The evidence is, however, scanty.— DEFECTIVE LISTS.—_— THE DIFFICULTY IN OBTAINING JURORS.The case of A.W.Poole vs Henry Hogan, which is a $5,000 action for damages on account of an elevator accident, had been fixed for hearing before a jury yest:rday morning.A pamel of twen- ty-four jurors had been chosen, but when the Hon.Judge Davidson came on the bench it was found that ten only were present. The sheriff's return showed that the rest were either dead or absent from the district, and two meade default.Things being in this condition, the case was again referred to the Practice Court for the fixing of a new date and the striking of a new jury. The sheriff gives the following plausible explanation of the defective condition of the jurors’ list.’ That list contains some 25,000 city Dames, plus the names .of ebout 20,000 persons residing in outeide nrihicipalities. There is no provision for stimulating those municipalities to furnish their lists promptly.and consequently they are very slow in being sent in.When al have been received, after over à year, it takes a clerk another year to write them out and make a new list.Meanwhile, the old list is being used, and as people go on dying, leaving the dis trict, or becoming too old to serve, the difficulty of forming a panel is easily explained.Mr.Thibaudeau suggests that yearly lists of 5,000 persons only be made owt, each municipality furnishing names according to its population. The first list should begin with the letter A, and the following one at the letter where the first list ended, and so on.—— THE CHINESE PUZZLE, ENVOYS NEARING A SOLUTION.London, Nov.27.—Dr.Morrison, wiring to the ‘Times’ from Pekin, on Sunday, says: “The foreign envoys have agreed to two proposals that were previously rejected, owing to lack of unanimity. These are Sir Ernest Satow’s proposal that China should agree to recast the commercial treaties and the Italian proposal that China should consent to foreign financial control as a guarantee of the indemnity.‘The delay in the presentation of the joint note is due to the ste gh : especially the
