TAYLOR of The Gleaner English teachers at Chateauguay Valley Regional High School are up in arms this week over a decision by the Regional School Board to make a 30 per cent cut in time allocated to English at the Grade 10 level next year. The cut, which would see Secondary V (Grade 10) pupils receive six periods of instruction per six-day “cycle” instead of the nine Two Valley nurses now given, was announced to over a dozen English teachers at the local high school last Thursday by Board Director- General David D’Aoust and Secondary Education Director Ken Dixon.Reasons given by the Board include the necessity of working toward conformity with the Quebec government's Plan d'Action for the province's schools. This document is based on recommendations of the Green Paper on Education, off to Cambodia. Two nurses from the Huntingdon C.L.S.C., Marie Camirand of the Ormstown branch and Louise Cormier of the St.Chrysostome team, left last Tuesday on a three-month medical mission to Thailand and Cambodia as part of an emergency relief program put forward by the International committee of the Red Cross. The Quebec group, including the C.L.S.C.nurses, will head for Camp Mak Mun located in Cambodia on the border of Thailand. This camp holds between 30,00 and 100,000 refugees, most of them Cambodians.Marie Camirand is a native of Howick and has worked with the C.L.S.C.since Oct.1976.She had been waiting a long time for work overseas but felt that the compulsory 5 two-year commitment required from CUSO (Canadian University Students Overseas) volunteers was too lengthy, said C.L.S.C.publicist Réal Ar- chambault this week.Louise Cormier, orginally from Beloeil but living in the St.Chrysostome area until last week, has been with the C.L.S.C.for two years and was also looking for an experience of this nature. Both women said that they might consider staying on for an additional three months, the political situation in Cambodia permitting.Marie and Louise have been replaced while they are gone but their jobs with the C.L.S.C.will be waiting for them when they get back, Archambault said.and in general, tends to increase the number of compulsory courses for high school students while cutting down on options.More specifically, .the Plan’s outline for Grade 10 involves making compulsory such subjects as Physical Education and Moral and Social Development, which are now optional at CVR.Given a present and future total of 1,500 minutes of instruction per week per student, the Raard wishes to make both Phys Ed and Msp compulsory next year, and partially in order to make time for them, the English allocation is being cut.Board sources point to the other high school under their jursidiction, H.S.Billings in Chateauguay, where Grade 10 pupils have received only six periods of English for tne last few years. On the other hand, a spokesperson for the CVR English teachers pointed out that the English cuts will bring the time allocation for that subject well below the 300 minute weekly compulsory minimum also decreed by the Plan d’Action, so that the Board, while working toward conformity with the Plan in one area, is moving farther away in another.Other factors in the Board’s Policy, a P.R.S.B.C.V.source said, are the need for coping with dropping enrolments while retaining the ‘‘greatest possible flexibility” in the variety of courses offered See CUTS page 2 weekend, but when it was all over there were still some bare spots showing through. This shot was taken from Rte.138 near wall. The fire then spread to the ceiling and the roof of the house.L'Heureux moved up SE BY CYRIL ALARY of The Gleaner .Nine dissident Huntingdon volunteer firemen are back at work with their colleagues this week following a Town Council decision permitting the election of a departmental fire chief to serve under the supervision of Public Security à Services Director Joffre L'Heureux.L'Heureux, up until the Feb.19 special Council meeting which gave him the new title, was joint police and fire chief for the Town.He will continue to supervise both departments, but the Council decision to allow the firemen to elect their own chief represents a significant concession to the demands of the volunteer force. The nine firemen who had agitated for separation of administration of their department from the police force were sent registered letters on Feb.14 demanding that they conform to Council policies or else resign their positions.‘But before the.Feb.21 deadline.for their replies had been reached, the Council decided to compromise on the issue by naming Chief L'Heureux to the new public security position and allowing the election by him in his new capacity as Public Security Services Director.Firemen have expressed satisfaction with the Council decision, and plan to meet in the near future, perhaps this week, to elect their new Services Council for the area south of Montreal under tutorship is making large waves in social services circles in the area this week. The Longueuil CRSSS office May start likely for Barrie wing Ormstown’s Barrie Memorial Hospital is just one step away from beginning construction on a new $750,000 wing to house expanded emergency and other facilities. The call for tenders on general and subcontracting work is now out and bids will be opened on March 20.“If the bids fall within our budget and everything goes smoothly, we would hope that construction will begin as soon as the ground thaws in the spring, that is, in April or May at the latest,” said T.Fearn, the Hospital's Construction chairman. This is the second time the hospital, which is financing the new wing completely on its own without government aid, has called for construction tenders.; : 4042.agi te Last weekend’s storm led to an outbreak of showmen for the first time this winter. This fellow, standing outside the Orm- stown home of the Alton Grahams, looks rather alarmed at the prospect of being melted down by Monday's warm sunshine, When last year’s appeal yielded bids running about 35 per cent in excess of the budgetted amount of $750,000, changes were made in the specified materials to bring, costs down.“There has been no change in the basic concept of the wing itself, but we had to make some cuts, for example, changing a system of footings to a slab type of foundation,’ said Hospital Administrator John H.Poupart.The wing, which will be built on the west side of the existing hospital, will be a single storey with basement, brick faced, with dimensions of about 45 feet by 90 feet.Designed by Montreal architect Robert P.Fleming, it will house an emergency Valley areas as well as the South Shore proper. The Cabinet decision, marking the first time the Quebec government has ever taken such action against a CRSSS, was announced on Wednesday Feb.20.Main reason given for the move was existence of profound difficulties due to an unhappy climate within the Council's administration during the past four years.” Appointed provisory “tutor” by the government was Roger Lepage, the administrator of the Hotel-Dieu Hospital in Lévis. His task will be to take over the CRSSS administration on a temporary basis and to furnish the government with a complete report on the situation in Longueuil.Since the tutorship was announced last week, directors of various social agencies operating under the CRSSS in the south shore area, including the received a report of another sighting on Monday afternoon.FRED KYLE - of Huntingdon was driving back to town from Valleyfield about 2:20 p.m.when he noticed the streamlined object, complete with ‘‘square-shaped small wings on the sides near the back and tail fins” moving rapidly and silently toward Huntingdon from the New Erin vicinity.“It turned on its side, flattened out, and disappeared in the direction of Ste-Barbe and Valleyfield as I watched,” said Fred, who described it as smaller than a passenger plane, but quite large, a dark grey color with no windows or markings and a rather pointed nose’.It was about 500 feet off the ground, he said.MEANWHILE - there's at least one skeptic around as regards the Feb.10 sighting. One Fairview Road resident says it was simply a low-flying jet plane.“It came right along the Fairview Road with a noise like snow coming off the roof,” she said, adding that it looked just like a jet fighter plane weekly column for the Ridgetown Dominion News.In it he covers items of interest to local farmers , plus a “Dateline” of important events coming up in the near future. One item covered in a recent issue was the “International Ploughing Match Landowners’’.- Recently the Kent Plowing County Local Committee of the 1979 International Plowing Match paid all participating landowners for the use of their land.Twenty landowners with a total of 549 acres were paid $40.per acre for the use of that land for plowing and parking. These landowners, by contract, had to provide suitable cereal stubble to insure good soil covering.Ian Maynard, who was host for the Tented City, supplied 130 acres and was paid $100.per acre.He had to supply a legume sod, some of which has been present for over three years. All of these landowners had to adjust their normal crop rotations to accommodate the Plowing Match.Kent County residents owe a great debt of gratitude to these landowners because without them this most successful event would not have been possible.” Ian Maynard's home was Barry’s domicile for several years from the time he first went to Chatham until his marriage. He also covered Crop Budgets in which the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food had released its cost of production figures for grain corn, soybeans and winter wheat for 1980, “For grain corn the cost of production is projected to be $2.86 per bushel, based on 94 bushels per acre, which is an 8 per cent increase over 1979.For soybeans at $6.69 per acre and 33 bushels per acre, an increase of 6 per cent over last year. The cost of materials such as seed, fertilizer and herbicides has increased around 25 per cent with fertilizer being the main reason for the increase. The cost of fuel is reflected in planting and harvesting costs. The cost of winter wheat is $3.51 per bushel, based on 55 bushels per acre, compared to $3.18 per bushel in 1979.These figures are based on current custom rates, giving an allowance for labor risk and management, with the cost of land at $65 per acre. These budgets are prepared to reflect conditions across the province, 80 land charges will vary accordingly.Individual land charges and expected yields can easily be used to reflect the actual indivisual cost of production”.The Rev.Howard Fraser, also of Chatham, Ont.writes a column in the same newspaper once a month. It is named, ‘ ‘Pulpit Ponderings’’, and is geared to the Christian aspect of life.2 .do age EA 3, S.By CONNIE SPARKS of The Gleaner For most children verbal communication comes naturally, but when a child has difficulty learning to talk, parents who recognize the problem often don't know where to turn to for help. The Chateauguay entitled the Hanen Early Language Parent Program, is made available to parents through the S.E.A.P.A.C.office of Continuing Education. On Monday evening an orientation meeting was held at Howard S.Billings High School in Chateauguay and seven interested parents of language delayed children from the Ormstown and Chateauguay area exhibited enough interest that the course will begin on March upwards of 100 ladies gathered at the Somerville Sugar Shanty to shower Donna Hadley of Hem- mingford with gifts. When the bride-to-be arrived, accompanied by her mother, Mrs.Donald Hadley, she was escorted to the decorated chair and Mrs.Linda Murphy presented her with a lovely corsage of carnations. With the help of her bridesmaids Donna commenced opening the many gaily wrapped gifts with which she was surrounded and passed them around for all to see. When all had been opened Donna thanked everyone for the lovely and useful gifts.Guests were then invited to offer the bride-to-be ideas on leur solidarité en vue de la soirée intersyndicale du premier mars prochain.
