authorities and bus operators will be involved in special safety programs. The theme for 1982, proposed by the Canada Safety Council is “Get Involved’.The Council believes all Canadians can contribute to a safer environment for school children: teachers, school bus drivers, parents, the general public and the children themselves, should become involved.Parents have a special role because many school bus drivers say lack of discipline is one problem that affects safety on and around the school bus. When away from home, children learn from the example of their peers and older children they see daily, and what they learn may not always be desirable.Consequently, parents and teachers need to reinforce the roles of school bus safety. The bus driver must keep full attention on the task of driving and should not have to deal with discipline problems at the same time. The Canada Safety Council says parents should take time to learn and understand how the school bus system operates, and should discuss with children the role of the driver, how to combat peer pressure, while ensuring that each child understands the various safety rules.Canadian students are taught that motor vehicles have to stop for @ From Gleaner f i school buses boarding or disembarking passengers with signal lights flashing. The younger ones especially are trusting, and therefore have a sense of security when crossing the road that the Canada Safety Council says is based on a false premise, for all too often the driving public simply does not respect those flashing signals. The public is urged to become involved in bus safety week, whether individual people currently have students using school buses, or not. Some may wonder “how?” and the Canada Safety Council has some suggestions: e Ask the police department in the community to enforce the no passing laws more strictly during the special week, in order that motorists might become more aware of the hazards involved.¢ Ensure that all drivers in the family understand the law as it relates to school buses and the reasons for it.e Participate in discussions about school bus safety with students, and show them that adults consider this an important subject.o Attend displays or demon strations staged by local school authorities or local school bus operators.o Take a defensive driving course to ensure personal driving habits keep up to scratch.100 years ago (from The Canadian Gleaner of Thursday, Oct.19, 1882) FASHIONABLE CATTLE Shorthorns seem to have had their day, and the craze among breeders is now for Polled Angus. At a late sale in Banffshire, Scotland, Mr.Cochrane of Compton paid $1654 for a 7 year-old cow and $1549 for her daughter.Five years ago this breed was worth no more than what they would bring for butchering, and, probably, they are worth intrisically no more, but aristocrats and gentlemen farmers have their fasions as well as their ladies.DARING BURGLARY On Saturday night a thief entered Mr.Moir's hotel by the back door, made his way into the room where he was asleep, and took some money that was in a cigar box lying on a desk.It consisted mainly of American silver and is not supposed to have amounted to much over $24.A cash-box, containing a considerable sum of money, lying below the bed, escaped the notice of the thief, who gathered up Mr.Moir’s clothes and took them downstairs, to search them for the key of the cupboard in which he usually kept his money, but which he failed to find.He got, however, a silver watch of no great value in a pocket. With an ice chisel and an iron barn, the cupboard was broken into, but the thief was disappointed.Taking a bottle of brandy, the rasccl made off, leaving the front door open.Suspicion attaches to a stranger.who stayed in the hotel for a couple of days [and] who left on Sunday.MILD AUTUMN The good roads and warm weather are favorable to the dairy factories, and the making of cheese and butter is unusually large for the season. The large production must influence the price. The land is too dry for plowing, and a day's rain would be acceptable on that account.50 years ago (from The Huntingdon Gleaner of Wednesday, Oct.19, 1932) MERCIER BRIDGE Only a few minor expropriations on each side of the river have to be arranged before tenders are called for the construction of the Lasalle- Caughnawauga bridge, according to reliable information received from Mr.R.R.Ness, a member of the Commission.Everything should be ready so that the Provincial Government can coll for tenders before the end of this week, probably tomorrow, thus done, it is expected that work on the first piers may be commenced by the first of November.BROOKLET HUSKING BEE Mr.and Mrs.Murdoth Rosevear entertained the older folks to a husking bee on Friday night.Judging by the number of husking THE bees held here this fall, many people are going back to raising yellow corn.Corn was an excellent crop in this vicinity this year, the absence of frost giving it a good chance to mature.HEMMINGFORD THANK-OFFERING On Wednesday Mr.Walter Keddy conveyed to Montreal in his truck a load consisting of fifty-five quarts of preserved fruits and and Recreation Centre, the Montreal Welsh Male Choir sang their lovely melodies in Welsh, in English and one in French. The audience enjoyed the singing of ‘The Holy City’ by a sweet-voiced soprano, the wife of one of the members and another member, a baritone, touched all hearts when he sang two old but well- known and loved songs, ‘I will take you home again Kathleen’ and ‘Home on the Range’.For some it was a journey back in time to the days of our youth in Wales.A pleasant social hour followed when many enjoyed reminiscing with the Riverfield choral The program read “Celebration of Praise in Song”, and the very walls of the Riverfield Church vibrated with the joy and praise in the music led by the Community Male Voice Choir on Sunday evening, Oct.17.Members were drawn from the Howick area, Franklin and Orm- stown.Rev.Larry Paul welcomed everyone and the program started with the chorus and audience singing ‘Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee”.Rev.John Anderson offered the Call to Worship and led in prayer, then turned to his task of directing the choir. The evening was a series of ‘Specials’, including several Male Chorus numbers, solos, a duet, a guitar group performance and hymns with everyone Joining in.The musicians enjoyed and were enjoyable with enthusiasm running at a high level.Participants included: organist - Rev.Malcolm Cogswell, pianist - Rev.Larry Paul; guitar group - Neil MacKay, John Black, Larry Paul, Bill Welburn, Bruce Barr; soloists - Rev.John Anderson, Archie Borland, Jean Beland; duet - Leslie Orr and Roy Templeton. It would be impossible to pick out any single highlight, but audience reaction tells it all when nobody left the hall for refreshments until the last bit of the postlude was played. The ladies of Riverfield Church served refreshments to a large group who enjoyed the fellowship hour.An impromptu second set near the close of the evening found the organist (now turned pianist) and the guitar group playing old time music and some sing-alongs.The music was of a slightly different flavor from that of the prepared program, but was of equal quality, praise and joy. Those who missed out on the October 17 presentation will be interested to know that another concert is planned for the end of November in Ormstown - KELLY Funeral Home Reg'd GORDON MCINTYRE knee padding and waterproofing is desirable for the hours of kneeling posture; and a hat to bering the war dead is not enough.Remembrance has to be combined with a ‘concern for the present and future peace of the world. The poppy represents sacrifice, peace and hope for the future. It is a symbol of citizenship because that's what Remembrance is all about.Through the sale of wreaths and poppies, funds are raised to assist Canadian ex-service personnel and their Mrs.Evelyn Lamb The mood of the models varies from ground level depression and determination to final day giddiness. If a being from this or another planet unacquainted with our horticulture program was to view these specially garbed workers, crawling on all fours through acres of geometrically planted trees (bare of fruit), gathering up less than perfect apples - an odd report might result.dependents in need.Funds go toward the cost of daycare centres, meals-on- wheels, transportation and related service for veterans, their dependents and the aged. This year's Poppy Fund Chairman is Robert Elder, First Vice-President, Huntingdon Legion Branch 81.Elder asks that you be as generous as your own economic situation will allow.Your donations, big or small, are a way of thanking our veterans.Ormstown The lucheon served at the Presbyterian Church on Thursday, Oct.14 was attended by about 220 people. The tables were decorated with small bouquets of fall mums and little baskets of dried flowers. The senior ladies’ group of the church had their bazaar table which was a real success. The ladies of the church are most grateful to all who supported their effort.protect the head and hair NEW ERIN from protruding branches CHIMNEY SWEEPS is a good idea.Put all that together with NOW under new room for individual taste management.and variety and the result Tel: 264-2653 is a sight beyond words.or 264-4567 FOR SALE ERRATUM In last week's ad the opening hours should have read as below HARVEY'S ARCADE Business Hours 6a.m.to9p.m.35mm camera [Mamiya] $150.Underwater instamatic $100.Walkman FM cassette [Toshiba] $200.Sansui 15 w per ch amp.$100, Aurotone mini cubes $125.Kawasaki 350 dirt bike [no carb.] $300.Swimming pool furnace $100, 200 gallon oil tank $100.PFAFF industrial machine $150.Marantz 50 w per ch.amp.$150.Meat slicer $75.Antique store ice box [ [with compressor $475.Tel: 627-2431 sewing The name friends recommend, A.E.LEPAGE am Real Estate Services Ltd.PAGE Office: 15 King, Huntingdoo HUNTINGDON: Ridge Road, 14 acres mostly tillable, newer spacious 9 room house, $42,500.ORMSTOWN: A real gem.Cottage, 7 spacious rooms, fireplace, garage, quiet location.ORMSTOWN: Ideal brick duplex, A-1 condition owner occupied, exceptional value $66,000.ELGIN: Country 3 bedroom home on Trout River, electric, attached garage $22,000.ST-ANICET: 2 bedroom excellently maintained summer cottage, private location.$27,500.ALLEN’S CORNERS: Older style brick, a real charmer, needs updating, 3 bedrooms.ORMSTOWN: Property for artist or writer, ideal river frontage, must sell, excellent buy $26,500.MARILYN C.PARTRIDGE OFFICE: 264-4798 RESIDENCE: 264-3095 KEITH GREIG 829-2419 Town and Country properties for sale.Interest rates have become reasonable. For information call Keith Greig 829-2419.CPiesse 4" Dr.YVAN PERREAULT DENTIST OFFICE HOURS MONDAY TO FRIDAY: 8:30 a.m.fo 5:30 p.m.MON-WED: 6:30 P.M.TO?P.M.SATURDAY: 8:30 A.M.TO NOON T9 WELLINGTON 281 TEL: [514] 264-5251 RES.: 371-564" “AUNTINGDON = J0S1H0 St.Anicet TELEVISION HITACHI Sales and Service Specialty COLOR J.L.DANCAUSE T.V.Tel: 264-2565 LIQUID MANURE TANKS & PUMPS AVAILABLE ON A DAILY RENTAL 1°.CALL NOW ~~ AND RESERVE YOURS 264-4183 BASIS Savings Bonds APPOINTMENT We are pleased again to announce ALISTER SOMERVILLE Hemmingford, Que.as our Registered Representative for Canada McLEOD YOUNG WEIR LTD.the appointment of Phone 247-2171 le Permanent HUNTINGDON: 250 arpents of excellent farm land with barn and machinery, no house but it would be possible to build.HUNTINGDON: 250 acres, 215 arable good maple bush, renovated house, good barn, silo, machinery shed, ideal beef farm.HUNTINGDON: Come and see this lovely home with 10 rooms, fireplace, garage in excellent condition for a low low price.: ELGIN: Large house with rental, on 2 acres on the border, renovated colonial style, 10% mortgage.Must be seen.ROCKBURN: 120 acres, 60 atable; Valleyfield: Le ministre Bertrand à .l'inauguration officielle.
