Advanced To Stage Where It Could Be Used Soon - Funds Are Needed The past few days have seen work proceed at the Huntingdon County War Memorial arena to the point that the roof has been closed in and some ice made.At the last meeting of the directorate it was decided that for this winter skating be provided, but it will not be possible to have sufficient lighting in stalled for the playing of hockey, unless a substantial amount of money ls procured to pay for the electrical installation. The $40,000 that was in the treasury when work was started has been spent, plus about another $11,- 000.Everything has been paid for to date including the roofing material, and to pay for the labor that will be required for December work.Something like an additional $20,000 to $25,000 will be needed to pay for the electrical installation, furnace and finishing work, which would be done in the spring.Should donations come in at once work would continue, and the electrical work done without delay so that the Huntingdon County War Memorial arena could be used during the winter months for hockey as well as skating, A drive for funds will be made in the spring of 1958, as it was generally felt this is not a good time of year to conduct a general canvass for funds.Should a sufficient number of people make donations, or agree to sign personal notes in favour of the Huntingdon County War Memorial Limited, funds could be obtained from a bank to continue with the work without deferment.Mr.Leo Cappiello, Sec- retary-Treasurer of the Hunting- idon County War Memorial Limited, will be pleased to receive donations, or signed notes, upon which money can be borrowed. If a sufficient number of signed notes are received the money would be borrowed; the Hun- tingdon County War Memorial Limited paying the bank interest, and when funds are received from the spring canvass or otherwise raised, effort is presently being made to get about forty or fifty people to sign notes, or contribute gen- ercus donations, thereby raising the necessary funds now, so that the Huntingdon County War Memorial arena can be completed without interruption.Should che funds be realized through notes being accorded, the Hun- tingdon County War Memorial Limited would give as security, a mortgage, with no interest charges, in their favour as their interests may appear on the Huntingdon County War Memorial Building. It is to be hoped several substantial donations will immediately be forthcoming so that it will not be necessary to obtain 30 great a number of signed notes in order to finance the balance of work to be done.Mrs.Eric Rottensten Injured In Accident Near À serious car accident occurred on the Boydsettlement Road at about 10 a.m.on Fîiday, December 13th, which resulted in Mrs.Eric Rottensten being badly injured.Mrs.Rottensten was driving the family car and was coming out of the driveway of her home onto the road and was just getting straightened out to drive along the road, when a truck came over the hill nearby. The truck belonged to Loiselle & Le- gault and is a fuel oil tanker and was fully loaded.Samuel Legault was driving the truck and was proceeding east on the Boydsettlement Road. When he came to the hill near the Rot- tensten farm, he noticed the car coming out of the drive way onto the road. The roads were quite slippery at the time and although the truck driver did his best to stop, he was unable to do so.The truck hit the car head on and turned it around on the road, sending the car into the ditch and through a fence on the right hand side of the road. The Legault truck took the ditch on the left hand side and passed over a number of large stones, doing much damage to the underside. The Rottensten car was damaged beyond repair and Mrs.Rottensten suffered a compound fracture of the left thigh and knee, bruises and concussion. She was taken immediately to the Huntingdon County Hospital, where she is now under the care of Dr.F.G.McCrimmon.At this time she is doing as well as can be expected. The accident is unfortunate in many ways, the Rottenstens have a family of girls and a small baby.Neighbours in the vicinity have kindly taken the children 25 YEARS OF ACTIVE SERVICE while the mother is in hospital, as the father is employed at other work during the daytime.Another neighbour has kindly loaned Mr.Rottensten a car to go back and forth to his work. The expense of the accident will no doubt be quite costly.Coming at this season of the year— Christmas, will hardly spell joy for the little family which will be minus the mother, when a mother means so much.Annual Meeting Huntingdon Red Cross The annual meeting of the Huntingdon Branch of the Red Cross was held at the County Building, on Monday evening, December 16th, with a small attendance. The usual business was covered and report given. The district was fortunate in not having any disastrous fires, or other disaster during the reported period of 1957.The Work Committee reported 437 pieces of sewing and knitting had been done. The Blood Donor Clinic in March had 268 donors. The home nursing class had 23 persons take the course, also 15 persons explained that he had dwelt on these (many things in order to give the firemen information and guidance on what may be expected of them as firemen.Volunteer firemen are different to those paid full time for the work, but just the same firemen are expected to know their job and to make studies of the codes, etc to do with fires and fire fighting. He congratulated the firemen and mentioned that they had some of the very best equipment for use.Alderman Fournier thanked the speaker and also presented him with a little gift in appreclaion of his coming to Huntingdon for the ‘banquet.|" The chairman then called upon Mr.Somerville, whom he said had an Important announcement a very efficient volunteer fire brigade and it was rated as the best in the Province of Quebec in the volunteer their fire fighting machinery and il was with pleasure that he had received a letter dated November.20th, that a grant of half the cost would be forthcoming. The cost of the equipment required was given iat $592256 and the amount of the grant would be $2961.28 to be paid in two yearly instalments, the first! 110 be in the present fiscal year. The grant must be accepted within three 9 it costs $276 per child per annum to provide schooling. It would cost even more than this for Grades 10 and 11, owing to the small numbers, of children attending these grades, the cost of specialist teachers and lab.facilities.It looks as if it is a smart move on the part of cur School Board to obtain this schooling for $150.per child per annum.Mr.Atkinson states that “many parents will be receiving $150.per school year in return, which is more than they pay in local taxes”.Has it ever occurred to him that there are parents with three children at the Julius Richardson School, who are therefore reeciving $728.worth of education per annum.I hope that he is not suggesting there is anything wrong in this.1 cannot think that anyone in their right senses believes that a person is only entitled to the same value in education as the amount of his taxes. Finally, it appears to me that for too long has the Chateauguay Schoo! Board run the educa- benefit of the tax-payers, and it is about time some consideration was given to the future of our children.Yours truly, F.A.Low.The Gore Sunday guests of Mr.and Mrs.W.J.Graham were Mr.and Mrs.Mike Andrews and Debbie of Montreal, Que.Chateauguay (Continued from page 7) the business meeting, films were shown — “Destination UK.”, and “Bermuda Bound”.Mrs.Jim Johnson acted as hostess. The next meeting will be held on January 8th, 1958.Kindergarten news A group of interested mothers, brothers and sisters attended an Open Session of the Kindergarten conducted by Mrs.R.G.Mosher and Mrs.J.Ingram on Friday, December 13th.The children went through their usual morning routine, with the added fillip of knowing that proud mothers and envious brothers and sisters were watching with the greatest interest.in keeping order and sustaining interest among their children, it was a revelation to watch how smoothly and easily these children work under their teachers’ supervision, and how co-opera- tive and helpful they can be.After such an encouraging and interesting morning, It was somewhat of an anti-climax to be told the next day that one of the children present had “broken-out' with chicken-pox! Frost, etc.| i8 generally accepted that Santa Claus derives from St, Nicholas, Bishop of Myra in Lycla in the 3rd century, who became patron saint of Russia and of merchants, clerks and children.Few are aware that as a legendary figure Santa also had other antecedents. His physical figure, as generally recognized today, derives in large part from Jan Duy.ckinck, a New Yorker of Netherlands ancestry, Duyckinck was a neighbor and frequent visitor in the 1820's to the home of Clement Clarke Moore.Moore was a professor in General Theological Seminary who gave scholarly attention to folklore.Through Duyckinck he improved his acquaintanceship with the usages of the old Dutch families of New York, the descendants of the original settlers of the Hudson Valley.© Moore was naturally interested particularly in the Dutch customs surrounding St.Nicholas’ Day, Dec.6, and the manner in which they melded with old English Christmas traditions after the British took possession of New Netherland. An explanatory digression is in order at this point. The concept of a special guardian or watchman over children, who bestowed rewards or punishments on the “good” or the “bad” ones, on some seasonal or annual occasion, is a very old one, Parallels existed in all early civilt- zations, During the Roman Saturnalia, which was observed next to the last week of December, schools had holidays, trees were decorated, gifts were bestowed, and there was general merriment, These observances went to France and Britain with the Roman conquerors. They probably had become a part of the customs of those regions when the conversions of the West to Christianity began, Missionaries under whom the kingdoms of Clovis and Ethelbert, in France and England, became Christian were under in- Structions to adopt popular regional customs to Chrivsian usages. When the Pilgrims and Puritans from England settled in America, the festive observance of Christmas was forbidden because it was still deemed pagan. But when New Netherland was turned into New ‘York, there were English families less strict in their adherence to orthodox canon.Among these, Father Christmas was An annual visitor to children, on Christmas or New Year's Eve.For a long time thereafter, in New York and surrounding colonies, in consequence of the melding of the two customs, children awaited with mingled dread and delightful expectancy two different visitors during the Christmas sea- san: St.Nicholas and Father Christmas, for whom there were various names.St.Nicholas—whose name was contracted to Sinterklaas by the Dutch, Peltznicke! or Bels- Nicholas, who on the eve of his feast day (Dec.8) visited homes with gifts for “good children" and left switches for bad ones.Father Christmas, Pere Noel (among the French) or Kriss Kringle, was the jolly good fellow in red robe who later brought joy for all.Prof.Moore is credited with effecting the amalgamation of the two characters through the popular chord he struck with the rousing verses, A Visit from St.Nicholas.The poem's description of Santa Claus (see the quotation in the box at right) became the one fonaries in 601 A.D., he told them to let pagan converts weave the harmless features of their festivals > jof Christianity, but there were setbacks, Abuses of Christmas reached into the spiritual fabric of Christmas observance. The popularity of the Christmas observance grew with the progress such a pitch in feudal England that the Puritan Parliament out- lawed the holiday in 1644.The observance declined until the middie of the 19th century when Charles | Dickens published his heart-warm- ing “Christmas Carol”.WILFRED | GENERAL MERCHANT | Herdman SAUMIER ili ai pio bel Chateaugay wa Moy happiness and contentment be yours at Christmas and abide with you through all the days and years ahead.J.H.PARENT GROCERIES — FRUITS — VEGETABLES New York May His message of peace and good will | be remembered by all, his Christmas sno: » James Kissane CHATEAUGAY LGA.— Elmer McCann NEW YORK TELL ME, TELL ME lovely lady has succeeded in bring- jing Old Santa into view by gazing into her crystal ball, yet it seems that the vision isn't clear enough to foretell the gifts that he is bearing.Oh, well, Christmas is only a short time away.SUCCESSFUL EFFORT WADENA, Sask, (CP) — A “witch rod” discovery of a productive water well has followed costly attempts to find a town water supply. The 45-foot well filled with water 90 seconds after a pump was removed. This Tips on Choosing Christmas Tree That Will Last If your Christmas tree shed needles all over the living room last year, chances are you weren't careful enough in buying a “fresh” tree.Touch-typing will help you pick a choicy tree. You can tell by the feel which trees are better able to withstand the hot siege indoors. If twigs and follage aren't reason- jably resilient or needles feel dry and crumbly, better pass up the tree.Chances are it will look like a hat- rack before Christmas day.And if you're not quite sure by the touch method, bang the butt of the tree sharply on the floor.A shower of needles will tell you if the tree's drying out, even before you get it home.Of course, the way the tree looks is an important factor, but an attractive tree that will lose its beauty in short order is hardly a bargain. The 1aeal noliday tree boasts the traditional pyramid shape, with lush branches reaching to the base. The two favorities in the market places are Balsam fir and Norway spruce. The slower-growing Balsam fir is more expensive than the spruce, but it retains its beauty longer in- You Christmas doors.ATHELSTAN SASH and DOOR FACTORY Tel.CO.4.5633 RACINE GRIST MILL SEED CLEANING — Tel.CO.4-2320 DONALD M.RACINE, Prop.ATHELSTAN, QUE.Chateaugay PA May your holiday be one «of genvine good cheer) W.D.RYAN & SONS HARDWARE New York Our best wishes to you on this Happy Christmas Holiday.CHATEAUGAY — ELLENBURG — CHAMPLAIN NEW YORK Built But Ws We wish you and yours a rich abundance of all of the joys of this happy holiday season.HYLAND & CO.RADIOS ELECTRICAL SUPPLIES Ohateaugay, New York NX!
