bolster-slips for the beds.December, though colder, was equally fine, and no severe weather was experienced until near it’s close, after which there were heavy falls of snow. The settlers found the cold very trying, owing to their ignorance in choosing fire-wood.Not knowing the difference in trees, and naturally inclining to those easiest to chop, they cut all sorts, and it was hard to keep up a blaze with swamp-elm and green basswood.Their houses, too, except the few that had been built shanty-fashion, were very cold, and they huddled around the great open fire-places when the west wind came screeching across the lake.In the mornings, they noted often that the blankets were frozen stiff with their breath.None of the women had ever baked bread in Scotland, and Mrs.Bullard’s lessons were not first-class.They had no hops, and preserved leaven by covering it in a chaudron, for there was not a stove in the settlement, so the bread was sour and heavy. With the advent of the ice, their communication was restored with Montreal, and they had many visitors to view the country and see about joining them. That winter, Peter Mc- Farlane, a book-keeper fresh from a Glasgow countinghouse, with his worldly goods stowed in a traineau, drove up the Cha- teauguay from the Basin to above Huntingdon, where there was a lumber-road to the Laguerre, and thence made his way to the the carefully hoarded bottle. The day so ushered in, their first New Year in Canada, the settlers observed with the hearty customs of their mother-land and that night, from the shanties where they held their merry-making, rose in the frosty air the sound of Scotland's songs and many an old story was retold of the land their heartstrings were knit to.I may note that the settlers retained not only the social but the moral customs of their native land.Of their number, Hart and Dick had been prepared as secession preachers, and they, on alternate Sundays, preached in the house of Thomas Brown, RUSTIK shaw and John Hunter.Sandy Shaw kept a tavern on the corner of Commissioners and Grey Nun streets, which had been a place of resort for the immigrants while in the city.He died of the cholera in 1834.Hunter had been a ship-chandler in Leith, and emigrated in 1819, opening à grocery-store on Bleury-street.During the early winter of 1820, he heurd of a young Scotchman lying ill of the jaundice, and went to see him.Finding he was poorly attended, he induced his wife to take him into their house, and where he speedily recovered. The young man was James Brown, on his way back from seeing the governor at Quebec. The topic uppermost in his mind, and of which he was never tired talking, was the settlement on the shore of lake St.Francis.Hunter, who was of a singularly sanguine temperament, caught his guest’s enthusiasm, and recommended all whom he could influence to throw in their lot with the party in Huntingdon. While hopeful as to their future, the seftlers were uneasy as to the delay in securing deeds for their land, and had sent James Brown to Quebec to see about them, when he took ill on the journey as stated. He brought with him no patents, but his report was favorable. He had seen Lord Dalhousie, who told the settlers not to he discouraged and the head of the crown lands department led him to believe Chateauguay.Accordingly in February ail the settlers who could be spared from home followed him to brush the line as he defined it.His object was to open the road left between 16 and 17, and considering that his only instrument was a makeshift theodolite he had contrived out.of à field-compass, he ran it with singular straightness, for he came out on the Chateaugay within an acre or two of the true line. One evening, after a hard day's work running the line, the party made prepara- ‘ions to camp. The snow was trodden down, a fire lit, and branches cut for sleeping upon. While the two chain-boys were telling a dry pine to replenish the fire, it.proving hollow, suddenly fell, and nearly killed Mr.Brown, grazing one of his legs. While sitting round the campfire after supper, singing songs.and all grateful for the narrow ascape, one of the party pro- nosed that the swamp should he named in memory of the avent, when it was agreed that it should be known as Teafield —from their having partaken of their supper upon it.On the line thus run, a road was finally rushed out bv 7 of the voune sons of the settlers, so that it was possible tn pass from the lake to the Chateaurav. In the middle of March, Hunter made a second visit.examined the land concern, that our water supply is contaminated in any way. That five bad reports, whether minor or major, have been received within a month, should call for action of some kind.It is, or should be, well known that contaminated water can be a serious threat to the health of all people using it.A filter plant is for the purpose of cleaning water of impurities so as to make the water safe tor human consumption. It was said at the recent Council mecting that the cause of the bad water which raised such a furor a short time ago, is the run off of manure from farm lands bordering the river from which the supply is obtained. It had been reported that the river is polluted, but it was thought that the filter plant was adequate to take care of this and {ilter out the impurities, but apparently this is not so.The samples of the water that are sent in daily for analysis are taken from the mains after the water has been through the filtration process. This means then, that the water in those mains is impure and therefore rates a bad report. The bad report does not mean that the water is entirely unfit for human consumption.but it does mean that the water is not up to the specifications of purity. This fact alone should call for investigation of the entire system to check on what can be done to improve the situation. It is something that should not be allowed to just drift along. The situation occurs too often and eventually it could reach very alarming proportions. The warning has been given, the remedy must be found, it is not something that can be ignored in the hope that it will remedy itself.Water is an important matter for the health of the people and medical authorities are continually warning people who go on vacation to be sure of the water they use and drink. We have gone to considerable expense in having a filtration plant to supply us with as pure as possible a supply of water, yet it is not doing the job it is supposed to.The fact that we have had bad reports proves this, It also proves that we are not getting the protection that the plant is supposed to give.If more cleansing properties are required to give Lhe right amount of protection, then steps should be taken to do this.It is a prime requisition in the interests of the health of all the people. It is a very important and serious matter. This is Health Week HIS week from March 11th to 17th is Canada’s eighteenth annual National Health Week.It is a co-ordinated effort to call to the attention of the Canadian people the necessity for promoting and conserving health by all possible means. The Health League of Canada which sponsors the annual observance, recognizes the fact that health is everybody's husiness and that the cooperation of all voluntary and official agencies is necessary. There are many, many problems which enter into the matter of health, yet by being thoughtful and careful, a large number of them can he overcome. It is rather strange in a land with the high living standard which is found in Canada, that less than a third of the people have the proper nutrition. The food rules for nutrition, if followed, builds strong, disease-resistant bodies. Therefore this is an important point for everyone to make a study of.If our bodies are not strong, then it is very hard to maintain the proper standards of health, It is not the quantity of intake of [ood that counts, it is the nutritional value of the food that is important. Many diseases which were prevalent in past vears and which accounted for the loss of a large number of our population, have been reduced. These have been reduced through the introduction of vaccines which produce immunity.Even polio which had great potential threat, has heen decreased by the use of Salk vaccine, Infant mortality is still too high, there are ten countries with a better Future In TE controversial question these days seems to be elections. The {foremost heing when the Federal clection will be held and all the changes that are being sought for future Quebec Provincial Elections. The first one we cannot answer yet, anymore than anyone else can.It is presumed that a Federal Election may be held this year -— but when, your guess is as good as the next fellow’s.One thing however, that appears certain, there will be four separate parties in the field when it is called. There will be Social Credit, New Democratic Party, Liberals and Progressive-Conservatives.You take your choice. It is understood that Social Credit will come out strong in Quebec this time, but how it will be throughout Canada is not yet certain.Already Social Credit is stomping the country and feels it has a very good chance on account of having won two provinces — Alberta and British Columbia. The New Democratic Party also feels it has a very good chance of making headway and might even form a government. In Saskatchewan, at least, Tommy Douglas, the Leader, has many friends, having lead the C.C.F.Party to power in that Province over a period of vears. In the industrial Provinces it is quite possible his party may make progress in view of the strong backing of the Unions which make up the Party. There will no doubt be a great battle between all the parties who will be offering “burnt offerings” to the people in hope of catching votes. The Progressive-Conservatives have taken some of the wind out of the iberals bid for higher rates of old age pen- > although the Liberals still have an edge record in infant deaths than Canada.Accidents are taking a great toll of our population, with motor accidents as the greatest cause.Alcoholism is affecting at least one in every fifty adults and the number is increasing daily There are six countries with a worse rate of alcoholism than Canada.Over $500 million is lost annually in wages in industry through absenteeism, much of which is preventable. These are only a few of the health problems of this country, there are plenty more.In nearly every case, if not all, something could be done to bring about a decrease and thus improve the health standard of our country.Good health is a priceless asset and one that should be strived for by everyone. There is no doubt that the health of everyone can be improved and the proper attention to nutrition is very important. This need not involve great expense, for the food rules do not call for very expensive varieties of food. They include such items as milk, fruits, vegetables, cereals and breads, meats, fish and eggs, just ordinary everyday items of food that can be spread out over each week, It is an inexpensive contribution to the road of good health and should be followed.Health week is intended to promote thought of health and periodical check-ups hy your doctor are also recommended in order to detect any disease which may be attacking your body and be checked before it reaches dangerous proportions Make Health Week every week and kcep healthy.Elections of $10 per month which might catch a few extra votes. However, there is an uptrend in the economy at this time, according to statistics, from the previous downtrend, and this may make a difference for the Progres- sive-Conservatives.The Liberals are making a strong bid for return to power, by a platform that promises many things. If they take the bull by the horns as the Liberals did in the last Quebec Provincial Election, they may just pull it off. They would then have to worry about carrying out their promises as the Provincial Liberals have had to do.From the few glances at the moment, a Federal election could be very exciting right up to when the final count is taken. In Provincial politics, a similar picture could be painted when that event should take plece. It is not likely that this would be very soon, as the Government platform is only just getting into stride.Should an election be called, it is quite possible there would be four political Parties in the field also. These would include: Liberals, Union Nationale, Social Credit and possibly a new one made up of the Promoters of Separatism. It was announced the past week that the supporters of the separatist movement will likely form a party of their own, unless they can get one of the other two groups to take up their cause and embody it in their own platform.Union Nationale Leader Johnson has already turned it down, so that leaves the Liberals. It is hardly likely that they will take it up, so it would seem that a new party may be formed. There is no doubt there is lots of time for the development of this plan and time “The Gleaner” Although every precaution will be taken to avoid error, The Gleaner accepts aa- vertising in its columns on the understanding that it will not be liable for any error In ADVERTISING MEDIUM IN THE DISTRICT OF BEAUHARNOIS e Report From Ottawa OTTAWA — (CP) Canadians learned last week that, us of last June 1, there were 18,288,247 of them. And this, said the Dominion Bureau of Statistics in 1ts reckoning of lust vear's census, means that Canada grew at a taster clip during the last 10 years than any time since the west was opened by a wave of immigration in the 1901-11 decade.Since the 1951 census, 4,228 818 new residents were added i 30.2 per-cent increase.Only the 1901-11 increase of 43.2 per cent beats this.In its second major report of the week an earlier one reported that Canada’s balance of payments deficit last vear was reduced to its lowest point since 1955 the bureau produced census figures to show that two- thirds of the population increase occurred in Ontario and Quebec in the 10-year period; that the festest growing provinces were Alberta and British Columbia; that Prince Edward Island and saskatchewan were the slowest, Newfoundland had the highest growth rate among the Atlantic Provinces.Together, Ontario and Quebec accounted for 67 per cent of the increase with Ontario adding 1,638,550 people to reach 6,236,002 and Quebec gaining 1,203,530 for a total of 5259211.Grows Fastest Alberta, the fastest growing province, expanded its population hy 41.8 per cent to 1,331,944 British Columbia recorded a 39.8 per cent gain to 1,629,082.Ontario’s rate of growth was 356 per cent and Quebec's 20.7, Newfoundland's population went up by 26.7 per cent to 457,- 853, Munitoba's by 18.7 per cent to 921,686, New Brunswick by 16.49 per cent to 597,936, Nova Scotin’s by 14.7 to 737.007, Saskatchewan by 11.2 to 925,181 and Prince Edward Island by 6.3 to 104,629, Along with news of a hooming population, came the report of the skrinking balance of payments deficit.Last year, said the bureau, it was down to $989, 000,000 thanks mainly to a sur plus on merchandising trade. This marked a reduction of nearly 20 per cent from the $1,217,000,000 deficit in 1960.But the report said that there was a record high $1,168,000,000 deficit in non-merchandise transactions with other countries lust year.Nearly half of widening deficit on “invisible” non- merchandise transactions such as interest and dividend payments and travel and shipping costs.Biggest Factor The biggest single factor in the reduction of the balance of payments deficit was a $179,000,- 100 surplus on commodity trade. When this figure is compared with a $145,000,000 deficit in 1960, it.marks a turnaround eut of $324,000,000, Another announcement on trade last week came from Finance Minister Fleming in the Commons when he said thal Canada and the United States have agreed to a round of turiff- cutting that will affeet about $128.000,000 a year in across-the- border trade.Canada will eut 61 tariff items on a wide range of American goods, and in return the United States will reduce 71 tariff items on Canadian exports. There the next general vlection à guessing gume for months wasn't out of the news.Just as though a general elee- tion was the last thing he had mn mind, Prime Minister Diefenbaker rose an the Commons and announced that byelections would be held in Waterloo South und Nicolet Yamaska Sept.10 to fill two of the three vuennt sents, The announcement came as a surprise to the many observers who thought the byelection would be held in June, providing a political weather vane for a fall general election. But while this theory has been torpedoed, the byeleetions do nothing to indi cate just when an election might be called. If the general election 1s ealled before Sept 10, the two by- dections will be washed out The Nicolet-Yamnski seat has been vacant sinee ast Oct.6 when Mines Minister Paut Com tois
