Engineer, Mr.H.W.Lea lol prepare a general plan of the Town scwer system and also of a sewage disposal plant. This is required in connection with a request of the Water Purification Board hefore consent can be obtained to open up new streets and lay sewer and water pipes on these streets. There are several waiting for these services at the present time.It was decided to obtain safety hats for the Town workmen. The question of water meters wus again under discussion, but no decision has yet been reached. It was felt that there should be a certain flat rate charge for a specified gallonage of water, but it this was exceeded another rate would take ef- feet.A question also arose as to how to handle a multiple dwelling rate when there is only one lead in.Some thought the property owner should be held responsible, while others felt proportion: ate amounts should be allot ted the tenants using the water. There is much which still has to he ironed out he- fore the meter question can he put into effect.Winter works was again under consideration and it was thought that once approval has been obtained, that the sion was along the lines of the lines of the type of building that should be built to obtain the best results and cover the purposes of such.A cement block building was mentioned, but some were against this type of building as the blocks attracted dampness and the building did not stand up properly.Others were of the opinion that a wall of cement should be built to a least four feet in height and then a rounded roof he built from there on.A question of size was also brought up.Some felt 40 x 80 feet would be adequate and that the building have four doors 10 feet high by 12 or 14 feet wide.A question of heating was brought up and some thought it did not need heating while others were of the opinion that it should be heated. For the heating were the questions of doing work in the winter months both on the equipment and on jobs that required certain prefabricating, ete.A question of footings was another divided one, some feeling that a slab cement floor would be sufficient. It appeared that the concensus of opinion was that for cement walls and a rounded roof. However, it was decided that the aldermen should look at several buildings to obtain the best plan.Mr.G.Leduc came to the Council to ask about the opening of a new street, onc that would lead from Henderson Street to Centre Street. No decision was reached on this, but it is under consideration. The meeting then adjourned garage should be the item dealt with. Therefore discus- subject to Meeting — Prominent Guest Speaker The Huntingdon Board of Trade is holding a General Meeting on November 27th, at the Chateau Huntingdon.Monsieur Jean-Paul Letour- neau, Director General of the Province of Quebec Chamber of Commerce, will be guest speaker. The purpose of the Province of Quebec Chamber of Commerce can perhaps best be summed up by quoting from one of their own letters: “Pressures threatening the free enterprise system in Quebec are being exerted on all sides, Communists, socialists, ardent nationalists, advocates of wholesale nationalization and separatism, all contri bute their individual and collective pressures. What better method to counteract these influences than to have an energetic and well informed Chamber of Commerce in every Quebec municipality? This is one of the tasks to which this Provincial Chamber of Commerce, the spokesman for 220 local Chambers is dedicated.” Board of Trade officials are extremely grateful that Monsieur Letourneau has agreed to come to Huntingdon. The reason for asking Mr.Letour- neau is quite simple. It is generally felt that without support from the French speaking community, the Hun- tingdon Board of Trade might as well not exist. In the invitation to Monsieur Letour- neau, he was asked to be very frank and to explain the “facts of life” as the Chamber of Commerce in Quebec sees them. The meeting will be open to the public as well as to all members of the Board of Trade. It is expected the evening will be informative and entertaining.New Erin Miss Betty Bimson of that preceded it.That day a messenger from Napierville arrived in the rebel camp.with a letter asking for rein forcements. This was so contrary to the expectation of the habitants, who had been huoyed up hy promises that the great combined army of Americans and patriots at that place was coming to help them, that desertions increased, and the leaders, not caring to await the assault they knew was inevitable after the arrival of the Glen- garry men, decided on abandoning the camp. Before daylight they began their retreat, were crossed at Ste.Mar fine in two scows, and took the road for Nanpierville. Before they had gone far, news of the defeat at Odelltown Chureh met them, and then it was every man for himself.Their abandonment of their camp was discovered early on Saturdav by Peter Gibson who.rambling about in his simplicity, crossed the barricade and found nobody. After breakfast the advance began, the Indians and Glen- garry men leading, who tossed the barricade aside and passed on to Ste, Martine, wading the river. As the others followed, Baker's and Perrigo's houses were emptied of what provisions they contained and then fired. It was noted as proof of the quantity of dubbed selfish is the worst thing possible, A self centred person is conscious only of his own unsatisfied needs, whereas the unselfish member of the family expands through all other members to touch life at a multitude of points. The home is a place for gladness.-“it isn't enough to feed and clothe the children and send them to school. They need some poetry in their lives, some inspiration. If parents have been effective in coping with the ills of the family, they are equally obligated to show joy oti joyous occasions and to think smiling thoughts as the background of their actions. This may seem to some to be flimsy counsel, but it is pertinent because its acceptance will put us in the mood to meet even unexpected challenges serenely.Everyone, young and old, is plagued by the conflict of two generations. We need to realize — hard though it may be — that customs which were right twenty or ago do not fit the young people of today. The environment has changed. There are few gifts that one person can give to another as rich as friendly understanding. This sometimes entails, but does not always demand, the giving of advice. It is necessary to take into account the point of view, the motives, and the prevailing folkways of young people.Adolescents are likely to be bored by their grandparents’ tales of how they got up at four o'clock in the morning to milk the cows and how they squeezed nickels so as to buy a book.It is trying FOR FALL PLANTING Special Grass Seeds TREES EVERGREENS SHRUBS of all kinds Rock Garden Plants and Rock Tulip Bulbs — Peat Moss — Black Changing Society enough to he laughed at, but much more afflicting to be yawned at, Courtesy, of course, would require the children to listen patiently, but it also requires grown-ups to talk in terms of the children's interest.Their superior knowledge should be hiended with gentleness and free of arrogance.Responsibility tives in family life, out corresponding duty.To learn of the be useful and to bear share of the load life's great lessons. There are many possible changes in the family circumstances which may make it necessary for individual members to alter their own ways of life. There may be a change in the place of residence; a change in the father’s employment; a change due to the mother’s taking employment outside the home: unemployment of any member, particularly the father; sickness or disability; death additions to the household; delinquency of a family mem- er.All of these call for the utmost expression of loyal: ty from every person in the family, not only in words but in deeds. There needs to be a spirit of give and fake, of rallying round, with readiness to make adjustments in personal habits.Living together It is necessary to have general rules for living together, and special rules for individuals according to their ages and the necessities of the family, but it is also necessary to have unwritten things, like family rituals. As Bossard and Boll say in Ritual in Family Living and eating eggs to seating arrangements and doing the dishes. These pedestrian processes transmit culture and and personality. In these ri- sic values and results of family experience are transmitted into the unconsicous mind.” Family rituals nify the diverse a family group into a harmonious unit. They reflect and promote the common interests of the members of the family as a group, foster {family pride and encourage refinement in personal relations. They need not be big occa: sional productions, but only tend to u- ly.As Amy Vanderbilt wrote in the introductory chapte: to her 1963 edition of the Complete Book of Etiquette “We observe small ceremo pies when we say “good morning” and “good night”.when we celebrate a birth day or attend a graduation.” There is no more effectual way of clearing one's mind - There are few preroga- prerogative meaning at right with.obligation to one's is one of values and control character|, tualistic common things ba-|; element of] - simple things done habitual |i, on any subject than by talking it over, and in the family council everyone has the opportunity to talk through problems to a decision.Without the ebb and flow of conflicting opinions and tensions there would be n6 progress made towards eradicating old evils or opening up new frontiers. The function of the family council is to make possible the orderly management of tensions, and to assure dissenters of a hearing and sincere consideration of their points of view.Emotionally the family council gives everyone a sense of security. He has his say and he gives his cooperation. There will be differences of opinion, but these are resolved by friendly discussion and compromise and the avoidance of acute angles. It makes a big difference when the family evening is this sort of conference rather than an occasion to give orders, pass judgments ana impose punishment.Readiness to change Being a family is a full men and women who would like what Sir John Lubbock calls “a three quarter marriage.” In his book “The Or- ign of Civilization”, published in 1870, Lubbock tells about certain Arabs who have this custom a man and ua woman are legally married for three days out of four, remaining perfectly [ree the fourth, While many relationships in life have shifted from their old assigned places there is a necessary clement of constancy in family life. This does not mean that we should cultivate rigid minds.but that change should be justified in some logical way and based on principles.Long-accepted ideas are not sacred to a new generation.Every new wave of youth selects from the old and forms a new pattern of its own.It faces new pressures and new problems, and the way in which the changing character time job.It is not a task for for it adapts to of with confusing logic.Wisdom probably consists in making such changes as arc needed at any particular time and in never making greater changes than are needed.Fidelity in family life is neither the lethargs of custom nor the commotior of change, but the sense of oneness that uses imagination to liven it and the put ting forth of effort to build it day by day.Love, companionship and a sense of belonging are basic needs of that life. Some people mistakenly supposc that affection consists of moonlight and roses with an occasional orchid thrown in for special occasions, but it includes much more.It is made up of interest, shared experiences, loyalty, cour tesy, unselfishness, and the goals and ideals that are exemplified in pveryday living.Supporting this sort of family life is the Judaeo- Christian religion. The chureh has always been concerned with the family. The sacred writings of all great nelig ions teem with rites that protect family life, and today's churches have institu ted programmes of education not only in preparation for marriage but in its success ful continuation. The church with its wide inclusiveness and its age-long continuity, is in a position to be the custodian and interpreter of family values. Our homes are the labo tatories of our lives. What we do there determines the course of our lives when we leave home.“That is why, said Dr.Rosenberg, “despite all new inventions and modern designs, [fads and fe tishes, no one has vet in vented, or will ever invent, 4 satisfying substitute for one's own family.” Being respensible for a family may.out of all this, emerge as a pretty fearsome business.Well, it is not something to be taken lightly, but at the same time it is one of life's sometimes the up stroke remaining on high and the down stroke rarely passing dead centre, Thus the price for the most part has been up, This past week has perhaps seen the highest quotations thus far.The price at one store in town and one which might be expected to have the lowest possible, was $1.05 for five-pounds — 21 cents per pound. That, we believe, is a high price to pay for the sweet stuff and it will end in a good many people buying less of it os they will not be able to afford it — it being in the luxury class. It has been said that the Government intends to launch an inquiry into the price of sugar and we believe it is high time that there was one, Several explanations have been forthcoming in the past few days, but none of them to our mind make much sense — that is to the layman, One explanation says that Canada buys its sugar on the world market and it is this market which sets the price. The same explanation sets the wholesale price of sugar in Montreal at $18 and some odd cents per hundred pounds.Another explanation says there is a sugar shortage and the crop in Cuba is a way down to other years. At the same time there is wonderment as to why the price in the United States is lower than in Conada.Someone came up with an explanation for that in the fact that Canada has to buy on the World market while the U.S.does not.We have not seen anything really con- vineing yet. What we want to know is what about the Beet Sugar, for our money we believe that what is being talked about is Cane sugar, Talking about Cane Sugar and Beet Sugar, we have always been at a loss to understand why the prices of these fwo should be the same.We have just been reading of where they have had à bumper crop of beet sugar in Alberta this year. There are many farmers in this country who grow sugar beets for the purpose of making them into sugar. What happens to all this end how come this goes onto the world market and wg in Canada cannot price our own product?Yes, we think there must be some better explanation than has come up so far.Already this increase In sugar prices has had its effect on a number of other commodities and resulted in increases in ther prices also. The Cost of Living index has risen more in the past while than for some considerable time.Food prices have been blamed mostly for the increase. The inevitable result will be a round of requests for increases in wages and then again another round of hikes will be instituted, The price of bread has been affected and there is agitation for still further increases in this very much used item of food.It is high time that someone stepped in to find out what is actually going on.It is letting such things as this go on without any apparent checking, that places our economy in the position it is today.Twenty-one cents per pound for a commodity that was bought only a few months ago for less than nine cents per pound, is letting it get out of bounds. It demands an inquiry to find out why the need for such a difference in so short a space of time.Sugar affects so many different things that if it is allowed to go unchecked, we could easily be into a round of inflation that would completely unbalance our whole economy, It could even cause many an industry to close down as their products would be too prohibitive for people to buy, Such affected thus, to name a few could be, Cakes and Pastry; Candies and such; Soft Drinks and other such beverages. There are manymany other products which contain sugar and greatly in demand, which could feel the effects of having to increase prices. It is imperative that something be done about it.True Peace Is Still Far Off ITH the controversy between China Wan Russia and the apparent softening of Russia as to the cold war with the Western Allies, hopes were raised that perhaps a new era was dawning, Russia’s attitude has always been pe- evliar and this puts it mildly, She has never yet given us a confidence that could be relied upon. The closest to this has been during the past while, when agreement was reached on at least a partial banning ef nuclear tests, But just as we are about to be lulled into a sense of feeling — Russia is not too bad — something happens to make us wonder. We have just had the incident of holding up a United States convoy for several days before allowing it to pass into West Berlin, As far as we can see there was no apparent reason for this.Yet Khrushchev has said such an incident could have easily caused another war.He then, in a speech in commemoration of the Russian uprisings, tells the world that any attack on Cuba or other Russian satelites, would bring immediate attack on nearby Allied countries. This, regardless of whether they were responsible for the first attack. We are just enjoying being able to sell our wheat to Russia and other satelite countries and are perfectly willing to do other business. The United States is also trying to negotiate sales of products, but is not being treated in the same way, The Russians are not satisfied with the U.S.terms and wants them modified before concluding an agreement. So, once again, while we have been lazily looking into the fire and admiring the licking flames, we find ourselves on that edge. These are the uncertainties which Russia presents from time to time, it is this that is the reason that we cannot put our trust in Russie.Again, Khrushchev has stated that in a few more years, Russia will be on top and the capitalist nations will be out of power.Does he think he perceives a weakening in our ranks, or does he mean that Russia will be on top by reason of conquest? If Russia really desires peace, we db not think she has to continually offer threats and throw .insinuations at us, We are willing at any time to pursue a peaceful existence and without wanting to exploit any of our neighbors. We are content to trade on a peaceful basis either way to obtain those things we need, Our armament bristles only in defence of the unknown, not in the spirit of attack. We are as ready to defend ourselves as we ever were and weuld do so if that need arose, but we will have fo be provoked “into it.We would certainly not stand by and see ourselves being attacked and do nothing about it.We are pledged to peace as long as others maintain it.That Russia desires to be top dog is seen in the words of Khrushchev, While such views remain, there can be no true peace.Neighbor To A Giant RIME Minister Pearson has put his finger on one of the main barriers to mutual understanding between Canada and the United States. In an address in New York to the Pilgrims of the United States, he said Americans tend to “underplay .problems until or unless they become conflicts.” At the same ‘time Canadians “tend to overplay them, and make a disaster out of a difference.” Canadians would undoubtedly be pleased if this situation could be changed and particularly if Americans would take notice of irritating situations before they develop into serious differences, To be realistic, however, it should be recognized that there is no real hope of any such change. The United States has 10 times as many people as Canada. It's deeply involved in vital problems throughout the world.Only when disagreements with Canada over policy develop into full-fledged disputes do Americans generally begin to take notice. And as long as a seemingly unimportant American action can have serious consequences in Canada we're likely to continue reacting violently, Perhaps the best thing we can do, then,
