No.52 to Huntingdon.Moonlight Lake acquired proportions not seen in the summer time when it would really be enjoyed, and those who got a kick out of riding snow sleds on it will now have to wait until it has ice of a safe thickness again. The river road from Hunt- ingdon.portions of which was under water early, rose rapidly after three o'clock and by evening it was not safe for cars to try and drive through it.However some did and had to secure assistance before they could get through. At a time like that it seems that those responsible for this road and the Lost Nation should take steps to close same with a sign advising an alternative route not only for the protection of people who use this road daily, we have to think of strangers. In fact some that were marooned on Friday evening were CAREFUL MANAGEMENT What's the opposite of a “vicious” circle?— a “happy” circle?Well, whatever you call it, it’s the opposite of a vicious circle that.has lead so many Long Distance rate reductions over the years. In constantly striving to improve service and reduce costs.telephone engineers have come up with a remarkable number of discoveries that long ago brouzht the costs of Long Distance calls way down to within evetyone’s budget. The result was that more and more people began making Long Distance calls, The more people who make Long Distance calls, the lower the cost-per-call of providing the service, and the lower the rates can be.And of course, the lower the rates, the more the people who take full advantage of the service. But all these things just didn't sort of happen: it took good management by our Long Distance people to tle everything together and push that happy circle to start with — and it st'll takes good management to make sure that the circle keeps turning in the direction of better and better service for lower and lower rates.IT HAD TO HAPPEN Just to prove how unsettling a wrong number can sometimes be, here's an answer one careless caller received: “You've got the wrong idiot, you number”! parti bi GENT rap sé rete a EDITORIAL: PAGE Editorial The Position of Huntingdon Fair N the “Letters to the Editor” column of I this issue, will be found one from James K.Malone in which he disparages some aspects of Huntingdon Fair and extols some others. At the end, he asks for comments by the Editor of The Gleaner, or some of its readers. We feel we have to disagree with some of the remarks in the letter and perhaps partially agreeing with others. The writer does suggest possible remedies for the situations he outlines and the tone of the letter while criticizing, is meant to be helpful.Such letters do often have the effect of realizing a greater interest.First of all we wouid like to mention that Huntingdon Agricultural Society does usually elect a strong board of Directors and this has taken place for a number of years now.It is due to this fact that Huntingdon Fair is operating today in stronger and progressive fashion. Before this came about, the Fair was indeed in a morass as the writer of the letter puts it.It would appear that he was not a resident in those years, or he would have known the difference. It was because a number of interested citizens and farmers got together at that time and decided that something must be done, that Huningdon has a Fair today. Each year ever since, the Fair has progressed both in patronage and financially.Supporters have come forward and got behind the officials to greatly improve this annual event. If took work, and the work was put into it and all who know the story are pleased with the results thus far achieved.Like everything that is allowed to decay, it takes a long, long time to build back up again. We believe the directors of the Society deserve praise for their efforts to date. The building of the Memorial Arena in the Fairgrounds did much in helping to revive Huntingdon Fair and put it on its feet once again. The Fair can be held despite the weather, which was not the case before.Several of the old buildings have either been removed or repaired. Some have been moved to new more suitable locations on the grounds.A new cattle barn was built just a few years ago, as part of the improvements. The bulld- ings have been whitewashed on the outside several times in the past few years, as also the fences and the gates. There have been several other improvements made which would take up too much space to give in detail, It is not fair to compare this annual Fair with that of the annual Ormstown Exhibition, which is in a different class to begin with and always operated on a large scale in accordance with its classification. But it too, has had its doubtful moments and for a few of the war years did not operate.Huntingdon Fair carried on during those times in its usual small way.Today it is operating on a much larger scale and is thinking toward getting into Notes.a new classification.Huntingdon Fair has its shortcomings, Everyone will admit that and the officials too are fully aware of the fact. The midway feature has always been a headache.Various means have been tried over the past few years to provide better attractions. One year vaudeville acts were tried and another year a full Rodeo was brought in.Both did pull in larger attendances, but the expense of same almost put the Fair Board back inte the red once again. One fairly good midway came one year, but the terms of the return contract were so high it was impossible te re-engage it.It is very hard for the small Fair to get the top midways, there is not enough patronage for them in the time allowed. It is possible that in due time a better midway will be coming and there is certainly à need for it.The Legion and the Werren‘s Clubs as the letter-writer describes them, are doing a wonderful job to boost the Fair and keep it going.Certainly they stand to gain something, but they also pay for the space used and provide some of the needs of the patrons while attending the Fair. There is a greater need for more exhi- biters in all sections and this would be welcomed.Whether a canvass of the area as suggested would help this, is a matter that perhaps should be given some consideration. With the upkeep of the Grounds and buildings, we are heartily in agreement. The more attractive the Fair Grounds and its surroundings can be made, the greater the interest that can be maintained. We agree that a bit of paint splashed around can do wonders, and some of it should be done on the inside of the buildings too.The industrial building is one such place which could stand a whole lot of renovation before the next Fair in September. The Fair Board is fully aware of these things and each year tries to make some improvement or addition.Planting of flowers and such, poses a question, as these require a great deal of attention if they are to be attractive. They almost require a full time gardener. There is no doubt such would be an acquisition to the Fair Grounds and buildings. We hope Mr.Malone, we have cleared up some points for you and perhaps a number of other people. Our Fair Board is not as far behind is it may seem, But all these things take time and money. The time has been donated on more than one occasion, but more than time is needed to provide the money to overcome the earlier difficulties and keep the Fair operating on an improved basis over the years. We trust you will now get a better view of the situation, but we do thank you for your letter, for it shows that you too are interested and want to see a real good Huntingdon Fair.Changes That May Come With The Future 1967 could be a memorable year for many reasons.Besides it being the year of Canada’s Centennial and expo ‘67, * will also be the year for Operation 55.The latter has to do with the tremendous upheaval that is taking place in the Educational Field of the Province of Quebec. It is a project in which we should all be interested. It does not matter if we have children attending school, or not, it is such an evolution that it will affect us all.It takes in the whole province and affects our two school systems as they were known previously, Whereas there were two departments one for Roman Catholic and the other for Protestant schools, the system is gradually being integrated info one, under a Minister of Education. The two groups are still being administered to in their separate categories, but under one head. With the instance of the Regional School system which will look after the students of the High School level, some difficulties have arisen. There is a movement on the part of English speaking Catholics formerly a part of the Catholic school system, to join with the Protestant Boards for the education of their children.Already several agreements have been reached in this respect in various parts of the Province, There are now two such Member of: Canadian Although every precaution will be taken to avoid error, The Gleaner accepts advertising in its columns on the understanding that it facilities of the Protestant Regional School. There are some others who may decide on the same course of action in the very near future. They will have to make a decision soon, or it may be too late. This year of 1966 is one in which we may see a large number of plans for new schools approved and building operations started. In our own area this would involve Huntingdon, Ormstown and Cha.teauguay.According to the major plan of Operation 55, the new schools should be ready for occupancy for September of 1967.All the arrangements are being worked out with this in mind and it is quite possible that everything will be according to schedule.Brought to mind are a number of things that will be involved in the changes that will take place. In view of the fact that a number of grades will be moved out of our present schools, it is most likely that a number of the rooms now in use will not be needed. The same will apply to teaching staff. This is a matter which school bosrds should keep in mind with regard to future planning.Teachers will be re- Office signed by the advertiser and with such error and correction plainly noted in writing thereon, and in that cane if any
