Lake St.Francis.He was an excellent swimmer and excelled in distance swimming. On the day of the tragedy, he and friends were diving trom a raft near the family summer home and part of the sport was to see who could stay under the water for the longest time.Donald made several dives and ‘stayed under” longer each time, but when he dove the final time, he failed to come up.Belief is that he MR, ERNEST WATTERSON, Ste.Agnes de Dundee octogenarian, was painfully injured about mid-afternoon on Friday on Chateauguay St.in Ourtown. The 83-year-old gentleman was crossing the street near the Rolfe Hardware Store and as he stepped away from the line of cars a vehicle owned by Mr.Philippe St-Louis of Pointe-Aux-Trembles backed out of the line preparatory to proceeding east on Chateau- guay St.The driver did not notice Mr.Watterson who was knocked to the pavement.Passersby shouted to the driver to stop, otherwise the car might possibly have passed over the injured man.Mr.Watterson this will only mean we won’t be delayed during the strike at the Valleyfield bridge, or we won't see boats passing at the lake, hut let’s keep in mind that every strike hits us right in the pocketbook, sooner or later.vw TALKING ABOUT THE LAKE, people living along the shore are asking each other “What's happened to the weeds this year?” In recent years, weeds by the ton have been washed into shore and to date (touch wood) there's hardly been a sign of them.Stinking dead fish and eels washed in with the weeds have also been conspicuous by their absence.Previous common belief was that ships passing slightly off- centre in the channel were cutting the weeds and causing them to be washed ashore, but this theory no longer holds water because more ships than ever have been using tha Seaway .not only that, but there have been more huge ocean vessels, Could it be that most of the weeds of yester- years were caused by a giant effort to rid certain areas, east of Cornwall, of weeds by cutting them every year? Some people say if weeds are cut annually for three years, they won‘t appear again. If this is so, let's hope they're gone for good.NOW, IF THE CITY daily.Real Lecavalier, who looks after mail in these letter boxes, will make one call daily hereafter, at 4 p.m.Monday through Friday and at 3 p.m.on Saturdays. The local post office employees from the P.M.down to the newest clerk have no say in any of the changes mentioned they are obeying orders issued by the Post Office Department in Ottawa.Approve or disapprove, the orders have been issued and we, the public, will experience a lesser degree of service, The seven letter boxes here are located t: Fairview and Henderson corner; Lake and Chateauguay; Lake and Wellington; the railroad station; Wellington and Cemetery; near St.Joseph's Church; Prince and Dalhousie. They were a definite convenience for many. While the boxes will remain as they are, they are now being cleared only once a day and most difficult relaionship to maintain, at way ccasonable level, lis that between teen-age children and their parents.Marriage is tough enough as you all know. But at least the partners, in most cases, are prepared to bend a little, to give an inch, or even two if necessary, to compromise when there's no other way out.Married people do communicate, even though the form ranges from grunts and sighs to language that would sear the carlobes of a saint. They're usually from the same generation and, at worst, can spend hours running down the Editorial Notes .The De Gaulle Affair N days gone by we admired General de Gaulle because of the way he handled the affairs of his country, France, when a strong hand and a clear mind was needed to recuperate that ailing country. In the early days before the war with Hitler, France was having its own troubles and finding it hard to keep a responsible government and maintain its place in the world.Following the capitulation to Germany and the occupation by German forces after the swift fall of the Maginot line, France was really beaten.De Gaulle at that time fled to England and was treated right royally while there. As the fortunes of the war once more turned in favour of France and it was liberated from the Germans by British, Canadian and other allied forces, de Gaulle was once more installed to look after its destinies.During the time that has elapsed since de Gaulle took over France and became its President, our admiration for him has suffered continually because of one and another of his actions. His visit to Canada and his urging of the people of Quebec to become Masters in their Own House has torn the last threads of our admiration to bits which have been blown away by the winds. We no longer have admiration for this man.We can never forget what he has done either at this time nor in the past. The people in Quebec are not people in bondage and therefore are not seeking liberation. They have nothing to seek liberation from. They are as free as the birds in the air.If this were net so some of them could not stage the demonstrations the way they do.Only in à free country can the people express themselves.General de Gaulle in expressing thoughts along this line was on the wrong track.Certain factions may be said to be seeking independence, but certainly not liberty. In looking at the affair, we cannot entirely blame General de Gaulle. We must lay a large part of the blame at the feet of the Provincial Government and Premier Johnson in particular. Then again we must lay a share of the blame at the feet of the Federal Government and Prime Minister Pearson. It was well known before the visit what was going on and the time was then thal Prime Minister Pearson should have asserted the Federal Government’s position.De Gaulle should not have come to Quebec Province first, but to Ottawa and then on to Quebec. It seems quite evident at this time that de Gaulle had some priming on the Quebec situation before his arrival and that he was full of some idea that Quebec wants to be a part of France. To some extent our Premier subscribed to greater collaboration with France during the visit, He had decided that he and he alone was going to handle the affair of the visit and he did and with little reference to Ottawa in any way.We feel that de Gaulle after his utterances should have been asked to leave Canada; however he decided this for himself and left before going to Ottawa. There is still no telling how much harm may have been done in this Province. There has been a lull in the insistance of calling for a separate State of Quebec since the opening of Expo, at least, and things have been going along more s:noothly until this unprecedented outbur.t on the part of a Guest of the Province. Most pcople, we believe, want to go along as Canadians; they have no wish to make racial issues. Each one respects one another and in this way all get along well together, working, playing and helping in various community projects to benefit the whole. In this way we can build a united and prosperous Canada whereby all will share in the benefits that can accrue. There is a true slogan which is: "United we stand, divided we fall.” — Sidney Smith Riots And Uprisings Rampant HE recent so-called riots in the United States have been on the scale of small wars, Real shooting has taken place and homemade bombs have also been used.It is hard to reconcile these as race riots which is the explanation given them, for actually the people concerned are all Ameri: can citizens. The difference in the people is the color — the negroes’ black — and the other people, white.Since the abolishment of slavery in the United States, the black people have been free, For the most part these people were born in the United States and therefore are citizens of that country despite their color, In earlier years after slavery was abolished, the black people were not allowed full freedom and were kept in certain areas and not allowed to mix with the whites, besides a number of other restrictions.Today, this is more or less not the case and black people mingle with white and enjoy the same privileges. However, there is still some poverty and squalor among the black people and they are not wholly accepted in the same manner as white people. The black people also seem to believe that they are discriminated against in many ways and that the white people are given preference over the black. From time to time incidents occur that tend to arouse bitter feelings between the two factions and when these come about there are small to large uprisings. These increase in intensity in relation to the amount of animosity that is aroused.Such was the case of the recent riot in Detroit and which left that motor city in a state of great demolition. We believe this has been the largest demonstration that has occurred so far.It amounted to almost warfare for there were both black and white snipers and many large fires and looting going on for several days and nights. The snipers were cutting down the firemen and policemen as they tried to do their duty. The National Guard was called in and they went from place to place routing out snipers and some other innocent persons were killed or injured in the process, This incident started through some negroes tailgating a police car. They were beaten up and other negroes entered into the dispute and gradually the whoic mushroomed into a full scale riot. From rejorts it is not clear who beat up the negroes and nothing has been explained as to why the negroes were tailgating the police car, Actually we do not know of any law or regulation which says one cannot do this. But like Mrs.Murphy's cow in the great Chicago fire, it is a small thing which got out of hand and led to more serious consequences, .Riots have been rampant in many parts of the United States over the past months and there have been many causes for them.Deep down, the resentment black for white and white for black is the core of the trouble. While the Government has granted certain rights to the black people, the whites in many cases have determined not to recognize them.We feel that this all stems back to the early American people who brought the black people to their country to be slaves. Now the offspring of these negroes are American citizens themselves and they are entitled to all the rights accorded an American citizen, there can be no discrimination, The only other alternative would be to gather all the black people together and ship them off to Africa or some other country of negro origin. This would be equally as cruel as it was to enslave their forefathers and drag them off to a strange country, The situation being what it is, it seems the only thing to do is to treat the mattar and the people as a part of the American way of life.Te this end slums and poverty must be cleaned up in the areas where these black people live.Treat them as fellow humans and help them to live as Americans, In some parts of the United government, the boss, the neighbors, or cach other's families.| know couples,
