in other words it is essential to share this business of living together in the Chateauguay Valley. In the light of this it is sad to report that, like everything else in today's living, this sharing of neighborliness and experience is under increasing threat from rising input costs. This week’s letters to the editor from the paper suppliers speak for themselves. It's getting increasingly more difficult to be neighborly. And how are things on the other side of the fence?Well it's sort of like the oil companies and their so- called crisis and ever-rising costs.Anglo-Canadian Pulp.controlled the International Publishing Group of the U.K., rolled up a first-half of 1974 profit of $14.1.million against $5 in the same period a year ago. That's why it’s costing more to be neighborly.Fair Time again It's Fair Time again inHun- tingdon with all the magic that a rural fair and a midway can bring in the middle of summer’s work. One of the great things about a county fair is that it is a sign that the rural spirit, if nothing else, remains unchanged.Apart from growing bigger the fair and the carnival that goes with it have altered little over the years. The gaily painted horses of the merry-go-round still bring smiles to youngsters in the same mysterious way they always did.People of all ages flock to the midway and men engage in games of skill while their wives home-in on the bingo game. It’s Fair Time and, apart from prize exhibits and contests, it means men, women, boys and girls, eating popcorn, cotton candy, French fries and candy apples.music, laughter and barkers’ cries fill the air.Ford looks good Canadians will rejoice along with Americans that the United States now appears to be getting back on track with Richard Nixon gone and Gerald Ford installed as president. It is an important development for Canada. To us it is important that the United States enjoy good health politically as well as economically and the manner in which Ford has taken over augurs well.We have bled a little, along with the Americans during these last two years of Nixon chaos. The Americans may well find that Ford's attack on inflation, which he calls Public Enemy No.1, is somewhat unpalatable. It may mean a stern measure of belt tightening at the risk of more unemployment. But whatever Ford calls for will be better than the American nighmare of the last two years.4 Woman | injured A voung Montreal woman received minor injuries after the motorcycle on which she was a passenger went out of control on Route 4 at Dewittville Aug.Celine Beland.21.received first aid treatment at the Barrie Memorial Hospital, Orm- stown, after driver Jean Merlitti.19, also of Montreal, lost control of his motorcycle.Howick Congratulations to Barbara Younie who won the bantam javelin class in the Quebec games with the gold medal award.Catherine Van Der Knaap attends a CEGEP in Montreal and has been doing outstanding work in junior javelin competitions. She has a summer job at present but we'll hear more about her in later competitions.Mrs.Albert Ogilvie of Lachute spent the last two weeks with Mrs.Russell Logan and her sister Millie, Mrs.Wm.Anderson.Mr.and Mrs.Douglas Mrs.James Crawford | Ness attended the Leahy- Cowper wedding, Saturday afternoon at Franklin CenterBernice Ross, Michael, Jeffrey and Blair were Sunday visitors at the Ness home.Havelock Recent callers of Mrs.Annie Mannagh were Mr.and Mrs.Elmer Frier of Laval.Mr.and Mrs.Kaymond Bonhomme, Mr.and Mrs.Herbie Pilon, Wendy and Gary spent some time at Bert Allen's camp on Sunday.Letters to the Editor One pound of paper one pound of gold Montreal The Gleaner Dear Customer: Due to rising costs from our suppliers, we are obliged to increase the price on our gummed papers and our Economy Bristol line. Please attach the enclosed sheets to your Temporary price list of April 15,1974.If further increases Mrs.J.L'Espérance Lynn Orr, daughter of Mr.and Mrs.Hugh Orr of Barrington, with Maureen Dey had a grand trip out to Calgary for a 34 week stay with Uncle Dennis Williams and Aunt Audrey, Lori and Scott. The weather was good and they had numerous side trips, a swim in the hot springs and a look at Banff.Mr.and Mrs.Donald Orr also spent their holiday out west at Calgary, just in time for the Stampede - they enjoyed the Chuck Wagon races! Aug.6 came as no shock but it saddened a wide circle of friends and business acquaintances. For some months Huntingdon’s long-time and only hardware merchant had been bed-ridden and unable to enjoy his favorite pastime of visitng and joking with friends and family. But he was so much a part of the Huntingdon scene and so much a human link with the past and the development of this part of the Chateauguay Valley that he will be missed by the many who knew him.Until a few months ago he was in his Chateauguay St.store each day watching over things, occasionally serving a customer but mostly talking with his cronies who made Rolfe’s store a daily meeting place.Quite apart from the wide variety of his stock, the social atmosphere of the store made a purchase there something to be remembered and treaspred nuñient” The store was Robert Rolfe’s monument to a life of hard work, frugality, honesty and open friendship for people of the xs Valley.Rolfe was born at Redneville, a small Ontario village about five , miles from Belleveille, and he came to this community in 1901 as an experienced butter maker. For 11 years he worked at a series of butter factories located mainly along.the St.Francis lakeshore between Port Lewis and St.Anicet.In those days when farmers milked their cows by handandtransported the milk in cans by teams of horses hitched to wagons or sleighs, factories were numerous and close together.Besides working 12 hours and often longer six days a week for others, Rolfe also found time to moonlight, literally.Alfred Durocher, retired Huntingdon farmer, recalls that as a young lad he knew of Rolfe haying and treshing for friends in the light of the moon, after he had finished his regular day's work.Fred says that Rolfe would have received about 50 cents an hour for that extra work.ap eas Paid off _ ‘ The extra’ work and frugality paid off.In 1912 he acquired and started operating his own butter factory at Laguerre.Already held in high but those were the days when Robert Rolfe cronies had a lot of fun together tellingtall tales.; 4 and his Mr.Quinn came east to visit Mr.Rolfe just before his death and stayed over for the funeral.regard by milk producers and widely known as a good butter maker, the factory was an instant success and Rolfe’'s butter became a byword in stores and households near and far. Those were the days when many homeowners purchased their winter supply of butter by the box and the Rolfe family delivered boxes of their product in much the same way as bakers delivered bread and butchers sold meat.In 1908 Robert Rolfe married Mary Moriarty of St.Anicet.They had a daughter and five sons, all of whom inherited the fine qualities ot thelr parents.‘I'he couple's second son, Huntley, predeceased his parents at the age of 21 in 1932, a victim of spinal meningitis; Cecil, the third son gave his life for his country in 1942 while serving in the RCAF.Mrs, Rolfe predeceased her husband in 1966.As horses gave way to trucks, small milk, cheese and butter factories which “= oncedotted the countryside began disappearing and in 1939 ‘the Rolfé* Biftter Factory was sold and Robert Rolfe acquired the former MacMillan block at 96 Chateauguay St.and opened what is today’s hardware store.Since Rolfe was an astute and versatile businessman, the hardware store prospered as the butter factory had previously. There has always been somebody in the store apart from the father and sons, James and Cyril who worked for their father and over theyears it's been a great place for elderly and retired men of the town to congregate. The late Robert Rolfe could relate events of bygone days with the best and current events were discussed every day by men of the town who would converge every morning for that sole purpose.Because of that, and a few of the people who gathered there, the store also gained the non- malicious name ‘‘The Liars’ Club".A devout member of St.Joseph’s Church, Robert Rolfe was aCharter Member of the Huntingdon Rotary Club and was active in that service club for pany years.Funeral services were held lagtr “Phursday ~#¢ - St.Joseph’s Church, conducted by Father Georges Quenneville, with interment in St.Joseph's cemetery.
