McCaig new manager John D.McCaig of Ormstown, widely known cattle judge, has been appointed secretary-manager of the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association of Canada and will take up his duties in the offices of the Association in Ottawa Jan.2, He plans to operate in Ottawa Monday through Friday returning to his Ormstown home each weekend. As secretary-manager of the association his duties include developing new programs for the improvement and promotion of the Ayrshire breed and editing the monthly publication, the Canadian Ayrshire Review, Raised on farm “Il was born and bred with Ayrshires - 1 guess that's why I like them,” said McCaig in his Ormstown home on the week-end.“Right now, we are working towards a taller and longer cow, which will have increased capacity and better freedom from udder problems,” he said in discussing breeding trends. He said he is looking forward to the new position, in which he will be dealing with ‘people I've known for years in the Ayrshire business across the country.” In his new post McCaig, a long-time familiar, cane- { carrying figure in the cattle rings at all Chateauguay Valley fairs, will serve an association comprised of more than 1,200 breeders of registered Ayrshire cattle 3 ÿ, throughout Canada.Six-plus termed feasible Approximately three times the present number of elementary school children in Zone A of the Protestant Regional School Bourd of the Chateauguay Valley will be spending a year in French Immersion classes next year. The ‘‘Six-plus’’ scheme for Immersion classes became a reality this week as elementary and secondary administrators of Valley school outside Chateauguay met and acknowledged the feasibility of the plan.Because of the central location of Ormstown Elementary School with respect to transporting students from the other five schools in Hemmingford.Howick, Huntingdon, Franklin, and Valleyfield, it will be the site of the probable three classes. He was born and raised on the McCaig family Ayrshire farm, Alton Glen on the main highway between Huntingdon and Ormstown and for the past several years has resided in Ormstown with his wife Eleanor and daughter Joanne.See McCAIG Page 12 scheme Eligible will be any student who has completed his or her elementary course of study in English, whether they have attended school for five, six or seven years.Students must of course, be strongly motivated to learn French, and to spend what amounts to an extra year of elementary schooling before proceeding to the Grade 7 level at C.V.R.Administrators of the latter school were included in planning because of the desire of the Board that students who have spent the immersion year can maintain continuous progress in French during the first two years of high school.“We want to stress both to children and to their parents, that under no circumstances will a child emerging from the See SIX-PLUS Page 12 Reinforcements produce 19 piglets.Gleaner correspondent Florence Crawford of Howick said that her sister,m Mrs.Lizzie Hope, who is one of the patients at the home, phoned her three times during the evening to report on the progress of the great event. As of Monday morning, the report from Glen Ovans was: Four stillborn, nine young ones doing fine with their mother in the barn, and six others installed in the house for bottle feeding every two hours during the day, under the capable supervision of Mrs.Arabella Ovans, Certified Nursing Assistant, who runs the home.“The sow, who actually belongs to my son Stephen, is about 10 years old,” Ovans told The Gleaner.“This wasn't quite her finest hour - the litter before last was 21 - but she'doing pretty well.” He explained that a sow can only transported in an unassembled state.“The explosives cannot be detonated by impact.Even shooting a rifle bullet through them would not cause them to explode. They are intended to be set off by electrical current once the detonators are mounted at the site where they will be used.” said Marcil.Plans call for storage of the material in a series of four giant steel boxes, 300 feet apart, which can be opened only by a sophisticated system of keys. The site will be guarded at about the theft, which deprived Allister, who lives in Howick, of his means of using his class work to help with year to keep supply within domestic demand on the industrial milk market.and was made as a result of an 11.2 increase in production over last year from April to August 1975.“Present trends indicate that at the end of the marketing vear (March 31, 1976) subsidies will be available on approximately 93 per cent of deliveries under market-sharing quotas,” the Commission said in an hundredweight of 3.5 ‘per cent milk. The program was hased on total production figures of 350 million pounds of butterfat or 100 million hundredweight of milk, but it now seems that this figure will be exceeded, and the government does not wish to pay the subsidy on an oversupply which will have to be sold on world markets at a much lower price.' The Commission plans a year-end adjustment to CIN SC td ye NÉE yr farmers who have received payment on less than the average percentage.Chateauguay Valley U.P.A.President Harold Merson of Ormstown explained it this way: ‘In general, we are now entering a slower period of production during the winter months.Rather than make the cut later on when milk cheques are extremely small anyway, the Commission has made this across-the-board cut on September’s cheque (which we all receive three months late) and will even things out later on.” ne Better return He attributed the rise production to the fact dairying has been one of the few agricultural operations which has offered a steady and even incréasing return over the last few years, so that more people are going into it in a bigger way.The Commission's statement also read in part: ‘The percentage off deliveries within market quotas in subsequent months may vary depending on the trend in the total production of milk and cream for manufacturing purposes.Should the trend in the production pattern reverse, then the percentage payment can increase.” Asked for an estimate of the loss which the average farmer might expect to incur, Merson said, “Based on a production of 300,000 pounds of milk for the year.if the seven per cent loss is taken as the Commission is now predicting, it would amount to under $600 for the year.” .= CE RAA era + ces era : Demeure, POT.- 2 - THE GLEANER - DECEMBER 10 1975 SESH * + p .A , Lou f nd x sn rene ve, STORM VICTIM: Freres, Huntingdon, sta overturned when it drivers are about to slow down, belt up and live longer. This will be good news to all of us who use the roads, even including those who so far have not been regular seat belt users. For this latter group the forthcoming Quebec government seat belt edict may be a bother for a time but everybody will get used to it and figures show that the saving in accidental injury and life will be considerable. The new safety measures are due in the spring when the provincial highway code is revised. They come only after it is apparent that drivers in Quebec are not, voluntarily going to take the necessary steps to make road travel safer. As Transport Minister Mailloux sees it the new measures will mean for all drivers a fundamental change in driving habits.Roads are to be noted individually and, where current speed limits are considered excessive from the safety point of view, they will be lowered. There will be increased inspection of vehicles, tougher penalties for the drinking driver and speeder and new high way surveillance methods. In other areas where governments have taken similar steps the reduction in accidents and fatalities has been spectacular. The hope is that with the new highway regulations there will be no repeat of the tragic traffic figures for 1974: 158.649 accidents, 54,079 people injured and 1,882 dead. The Canadian Automobile Association estimates that the adoption of compulsory seat belt legislation by all provinces would result in an annual saving to Canada of more than 1,300 lives and more than $260 million medical and social assistance costs and productivity. What price thrift?According to the economists one of the dismaying and puzzling things of our time is that, collectively, we Canadians are saving too much.On the face of it, saving against a rainy day seems like a good thing to do.Our daddies and their daddies before them stressed the idea that a penny saved is a penny earned and until now nobody has come along to label the saving habit as a poor one.Offhand one would hardly think the current times.when the price of everything puts such a strain on our pocketbooks that there seems little or nothing left over after just living, would be considered an era of too much saving. One wonders how people do it, or even who these people are who are able to save to this extent. However, so the economists say, that is what is happening. They blame it on the uncertainty caused by inflation.a psychological rather than economic motive.People, even while {or perhaps because of] the unions press demands for more pay.are fearful of the possibilities of unemployment and are saving whatever they can as a hedge against this eventuality. In the first six months of 1975 Canadians saved 9.5 per cent of their income, up two per cent from 1973.This means an increasing proportion of money is, in effect, going into the piggy bank instead of being put to work for the buying and selling of things people normally want.Says economist John Kenneth Galbraith: “There are indications during the last 16 months or so that we are saving ourselves into trouble.” Encouraging word The advent of a new publication rates as an encouraging happening in The Valley in these somewhat uncertain times. It is the house organ of the Clevn & Tinker textile complex in Huntingdon and.while a $50 prize is offered for a permanent name, the first issue is off the press under the title CT Journal.Quite apart from primary aim of the publication-to improve communication amongst the company plants and provide a better understanding of the total operation-the CT Journal tells us.in the president's message.of accomplishment and good portent.Says C & T Longlade: ‘’We have just come through one of the longest and most dismal periods of our Company's history. Our position today is getting very much back to normal. There has been in the last year a noticeable improvement in our quality which all markets recognize. If is only fair to point out that other industries than textiles were affected by the severe market slump which has just passed by.I still believe that other industries now would like to have the future that we have.” These are heartening words as we move toward a new year.President Neil safety ® Letters 10 the Editor ®8e For American Indians: not much to celebrate Akwesasne, N.Y.Dec.3 The Editor The Gleaner Dear sir: When Jan.1.1976 arrives the United States will be 200 years old.All across the country there will be celebrations. The Native American Indians will be among the few who have nothing to celebrate. Why should we celebrate the taking of our land” The slaughter of our people.and the destruction of a complete way of life” We are hanging on to a thread of our past.trying to Academy teachers outline The writer of this letter has been a long-time reader of The Gleaner and the Fort Covington Sun and from time to time has been a helpful source of news concerning her native people.learn how our ancestors were before the arrival of the white man.Sure maybe others can sit back and enjoy how things have changed over the past 200 years. You say for the better. But no one stops to think of how happy my people once were.We lived on a free land.No pollution, no alcohol, no slaughtering of other people unnecessarily and no corruption. We were once a happy people living a contented life.Maybe it doesn’t do any good to think or dream of how life might have been.Maybe 1 am alone in my thoughts. So, go ahead and celebrate, America.Your celebration means little to the people here or to any of my brothers and sisters across the land on their reservations.Celebrate.Sincerely.an Indian from Akwesasne their contract position Huntingdon Academy.Nov.19, 1975.Dear Parents: We.the teachers of Huntingdon Academy.wish lo apologise for any inconvenience which we are causing vou because of the recent government offer to teachers. At this time we are asking for your understanding and support because we know that you care as much about your child's future as we do.Therefore, we are fighting for better education.and we hope that you will support us in this most difficult task.As you are aware, we have been working under a Government Decree during the past four years.(We went on a legal strike; after eight working days we were ordered back to work by government legislation and told what our salaries, benefits and working conditions would be).We are most upset with the recent government offer: many teacffers feel that it is totally unacceptable. The following paragraphs outline our reasons for dissatisfaction with this offer: (1) The Government has offered us 265 percent increase in salaries. In order to catch up with our 1972 purchasing power, we now need an income of 23.5 percent. The recent offer only gives us a 3 percent increase over our 1972 purchasing power. This is quite an insult when vou consider that the cost of living continues to rise daily.(2) the workload in the government offer represents an increase of 15 percent over our present workload. In view of No.1 above, this means that we will be given a 3 percent increase in salary if we accept a 15 percent increase in workload. We see this as a most unfair offer.(For elementary teachers.the increase would mean that our work day would be 25 percent longer than it is at present, i.e.50 to 60 minutes more.Day already long As you are no doubt aware, many of the teachers at the Academy willingly work longer hours than what is stipulated by the government so that the children can have an activity cycle, an Outdoor Education trip once a year, field trips to Montreal and Upper Canada Village, etc. Many of us also work during our evenings to learn more effective ways of teaching the children and to plan innovative programmes for daily classes. We would like to continue to have the time to do these things.A longer workday might make this physically impossible.(3) Under the Decree, we now work and are paid for 200 days. This means that statutory holidays and summer holidays are unpaid - holidays fer Auto licence - hike contrary to price Nov.29th Dear Sir: I read in your issue of Nov.26 under “‘This and That in Town” the way the Quebec Government is raising the price of licence plates for the year 1976.mp Pictures from the Past Riverfield and Howick Kirk Sessions,1915 Seated: Robert McKell, Willlam Templeton, Thomas Standing: Dr.J.C.Shanks, David Galbraith, George Gebbie, Rev.A.S.Woods, Mathew McKell.McClenaghan, John Carmichael, James Crawford, freeze This doesn’t fit with the government program to keep prices down. The licence increase seems a queer move at a time when there is this fellow from Ottawa by the name of P.E.Trudeau flying all over the country and explaining how his governiment’s Prices and Income Policy should work and how everybody should restrain excessive demands, whether it be raises in wages or in prices. Also there is this guy Bourassa and his fellow compatriots trying to go their own way.I would think this licence hike should be a good case for this old lady by the name of Beryl Plumtree to look into.It would be quite a change for her instead of riding the backs of the egg men and the farmers. As the saying goes ‘What is good for the goose should also be good for the gander’, It also may be that the Bourassa Government is trying to find -a way to collect more money from The Public, so they can squander it some where else on some crazy project.perhaps like all this mess we have now in Montreal with the Olympics.I just wonder.Yours, J.Schuyler teachers. The recent offer reads 200 working days minimum. This could mean a longer working year in addition to a longer working day.(4) At present, the School Board can fire or dismiss a legally qualified teacher only if the board provides a written statement to this effect. The teacher then has the privilege of going to arbitration if he wishes to contest this decision. The recent offer provides this security only after three years of service.Once again we are being offered less than what we already have.(5) At present, the pupil teacher ratio is 26:1 in the elementary schools. The recent offer is as follows: - Kindergarten 40:1; Primary (ages 6-8) 24:1; Elemenrary (ages 9 and over) 26:1.The pupil teacher ratios are not much better than what we have at present. This 26:1 pupil-teacher ratio in the Academy this year has meant class sizes of 30-35 and in some cases, 36 children, in order to have specialists and extra French teachers.(6) The recent offer says nothing about: Insurance, Maternity Leave, Guildance and Librarians, Special Education classes. The Decree which we presently work under contains provisions for these four areas.Thand you for taking the time to read this letter. We hope that you better understand our feelings and reactions to the recent government offer to teachers. It is your tax dollar and our tax dollar that the government is spending. Please support us in our desire to see that it is spent wisely and for he benefit of all children today.Sincerely, All teachers at his qualities as an elder of the church and the great sense of loss felt by his death .Instead of dwelling on death and loss, those who die in Christ should be remembered at this time with gratitude for the life they have lived.James Bruce Cairncross, born in Bruce County, Ont.on Aug.2, 1904 was a son of John Cairncross and his wife Annie Cole.Last year (1974) Mr.and Mrs.Bruce Cairncross celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. He was a loving father and grandfather and this was a happy day for him and his family, when many friends and relatives visited them. The deceased is mourned by his wife the former Edna Chandler; show a handmade Christmas decoration - provided many new and glamorous ideas. In turn they were placed on a table for further inspection.Elli-Maria Wright's little apple sculptures were delightful and a graceful apple lady was outstanding.Marjory Hope's styrofoam ball, Rhoda McFarlane’s Christmas Angel, and others, all were special in their own way.CVAS explained Isabel Templeton explained what is happening in connection with the CVAS LIP grant.Walshaven was chosen as the natural starting place.Volunteers are needed to operate a meals-on-wheels program and telephone calls may be made to 829- 2311 for further information.Time and money are needed for this project which will begin at Walshaven.Eleanor Greig Costello and Valerie Allen are in charge of handicrafts to be taught at home or at Walshaven.Call the same number as above for information.Later a donation of $25 was made to the Meals-on- Wheels as the grant does not cover this project.A highlight of the meeting was the reading by Betty Nish of Morley Callaghan's Christmas story about the turkey he couldn’t give away. After talking to an old man at a church who knew hundreds of people who needed a turkey, he realized he hadn't been looking for someone who would appreciate the turkey but someone who would appreciate him. This story was taken from Mary Barber and Flora McPherson's book “Christmas in Canada’ a fine Christmas gift.Hazel Robertson told about a P.E.l.friend Marion Cameron who visited her recently. The scrapbook made up by Marna Brown's committee will eventually go to Mrs.Cameron's W.I.branch.Conveners’ reports Beryl Greig, Home Economics: Used her time.to demonstrate a Christmas tree made with buns, simple to make, pretty to look at and good to eat.Verna Buchanan, Citizenship: told of a warning plaque being placed at Peggy's Cove to warn visitors and sightseers that injury and death may follow if they do not observe certain rules. Two thousand visitors pass through Peggy's Cove every year.Una Gruer, Education: mentioned the present strike involving the teachers.Another concern was the matter of educating the children on how to leave a school bus. They should be taught to look in all directions before they cross the street or road.Too many leave a school bus with a false sense of security expecting all traffic to stop for them.It should but it doesn’t.Margaret Chisholm, Publicity: said that 55,000 W.1.members are asked to speak out loud and strong about issues that concern us, to retain the quality of life.Make the theme for Huntingdon Locals Mr.and Mrs.Roger Deschampbeault and family of Toronto were visitors to Huntingdon and Dundee this weekend. On Sunday they were guests of Mr.and Mrs.Deschampbeault of Dundee and: on Sunday afternoon their infant son was baptized by Rev.Father Gagnier who gave the baby the names Joseph, Lionel Réal Reginald.Marie and Réal Bechard of Woodlands were the godparents and a family gathering was held at the home of the grandparents, Mr.and Mrs.Lionel Deschampbeault of Dundee.Brian Smith and his wife Helen and two children Christopher and Beth are now in Jamaica for two years with the QUSO organization, and will be teaching in that Island. They report to Brian's mother, Mrs.Vera Smith, that it is like going back 100 years in time to live the life in the islands, They are teaching English to both students and teachers and life is very rural. The gardener cuts the lawn with a machete, or short sword and there are few or no modern appliances. The building being used for - Offices of the Department of Agriculture from Ste.Martine, a true agricultural centre, to Chateauguay, an urban centre, causing severe problems to area farmers “as a result of a bureaucratic whim which was not in the true interest of the province.” During the current period of inflation, the Quebec Government should set an example by restraining its expenses. What would it cost to buy land and construct a building offering the same facilities to be found in Ste.Martine? While the notary from Chateauguay must travel about 10 miles to Ste.Martine, the farmer from St.Chrysostome or Ormstown would have to travel about 25 miles to Chateauguay.Other business: The sum of $1,500 was granted to the Howick Sports Association to help run the two skating rinks in the Municipality of Howick.Another sum of $500 was voted to the Vikings Snowmobile Club of Howick to help defray this year's operating deficit. The following building permits issued by Building Inspector Donald Blanchette, were approved: Russell Towns (mobile home); William Robinson (shed 35 by 70 feet) ; John Gerald Lederhof (house renovation); and Riverfield Curling Club (storage area and cement foundation).Accounts approved: Claude Lacoste $2,820; Hydro-Quebec $421.97; Howick Snowmobile Vikings $500; Denis Daoust $121; Herménégilde Arcoite $288; Marcel Arcoite $9; Edwin Brown $2,505, Charles Turcot $59.62; Howick Sports Assoc’n $1,500; Roger St.Denis $136; Francois Bergevin $7.50; Jean-Aimé Parent (Bingo) $10.THE GLEANER - DECEMBER 10 1975 - 7 ra.ET TODAY - o e QUALITY GOODS 71% MEN'S LADIES h DRESSES 20” New Styles for Christmas PURSES % 20 © ot ( © MENS AND LADIES GOLD RINGS o CHOICE OF GOLD JEWELRY SNOWMOBILE SUITS Reg.89 / PHENTEX 3 0z.39 = a) SPECIAL@on® PHENTEX Reg.PHENTEX JUMBO 129 2.19 PHENTEX SKY NYLON BALLS 3 oz.age, COB 69 [es 79 Snowmobile Snowmobile CHILDREN'S WEAR BOOTS HELMETS 40” or @ aia 95 95 \\_ 12 19%.% ELECTRICAL ~ 207 or APPLIANCES JEANS au) RADIOS - STEREOS ALL MAKES @ STEAM IRONS © 2 0 % % HOCKEY STICKS J 407 ox SCHOOL SUPPLIES ® VEGETABLES ® CHEESE * FISH OPEN DAILY INCLUDING SUNDAY 9A.M.to 6P.M.FREE EAR PIERCING WITH PURCHASE OF ae LUXOR JEWELRY E.SIMONEAU, PROP.CHATEAUGUAY ST.HUNTINGDON ON 1976 STYLE FUR COATS GRENIER FURS “THE HOUSE BUILT ON QUALITY” 46 MARCHE We offer our Professional Experience to every customer NEW 76 FUR STYLES VALLEYFIELD 373-1707 ° SHORT & LONG HAIR FURS mr | it FOOD PRICES ARE FROZEN, EVERYONE KNOWS THAT!
