Artful of the Dodger family of white-footed mice, could not resist the temptation to leave artistic impressions in the new fallen snow, while venturing forth for food.He threw caution to the winds as he traced patterns first with his feet, then with his tail. The watching cat, although intrigued, was more interested in food than culture.Suddenly and tragically, Artful joined the ranks of those who had sacrificed themselves for their art. Finally time came. The pace was accelerated to offset the possible intrusion of marauding hunters.Tension was high inthe waiting crowds lining the burrows.Among it’s a time for 2 "doing, not saying.… When we get really frazzled with «the more secular aspects of the holiday, we can switch viewpoints -briefly to look at some other conno- ‘tations of the midwinter season.there is the Winter -Solstice.Last Sunday night was “December’s full moon, sometimes called the Moon of the Long Dark.Today, Wednesday, is the shortest day of the year. After this, however imperceptibly, the night will shorten and, like the tiniest of seeds dormant underground, the thought of spring can start to grow, sustaining us through the brunt of winter weather yet to come.Mythology has it that the 14 days around the Solstice were called the Halcyon Days, a phrase which today has come to mean simply a happy time, whenever it occurs. But originally, the story was that the Halcyon (alias the Kingfisher) settled on the sea during this two- week period, calming the waves and building its nest on the smooth surface of the water. The original connotation was peace - a serene time, a suspension of turmoil, a period set aside from the tensions and conflicts of the everyday world.Peace and joy are ideas central to the Christian holiday too, of course, but it’s always enriching to see things from a different slant, even though our Valley kingfishers are not easily pictured floating tranquilly across an un-named sea at this or any other season.A bird by any other name could fill the bill, however.Perhaps your own Christmas decorations include a bird or two.Or check out the bird feeder if you have one.And let whatever bird it is bring to mind the Halcyon with its unruffled feathers, building a nest for future generations. We wish you peace.(J.T) GLEANER ARCHIVES.125 years ago December 24, 1869 MOR: PARLIAMENTARY BUILDINGS The Local Ministry are credited with the intention of building, not only a residence for the Lieutenant- Governor, but Government offices at Quebec. We do not see any necessity for either. The Lieutenant-Governor receives a large enough salary to enable him to pay his own house rent, and as to Departmental buildings, it would be better to lease them.It is now undeniable that Confederation is far from a success, that it has involved the country in increased expenditure without any corresponding advantage, and that, within a very short period, it will have to be either modified 55 years ago .today are materially or given up altogether.SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS examinations of our public schools were held and were numerously attended by an appreciative public. The answers of the class in Geology were especially interesting and satisfactory, and we have never heard more lucid explanations in Algebra and Euclid than those given by the students in the Academy. In Mr.Whyte's department the pupils gave evidence in their answers of Geography, Grammar, &c., of the unceasing efforts of a laborious and successful teacher. The specimens of Penmanship, Drawing and Bookkeeping were creditable alike to teacher and scholars.December 20, 1939 (EDITORIAL) WAR OR NO WAR.THERE MUST BE TOYS Canada is at war this Christmas but Santa Clause must make his rounds, war or no war.And to make his rounds he must have toys. Many of the toys of “advance copy” of the - THE MH BEFORE.2: 14% Tourists.Sophie Bérubé have been travelling around the territory, getting the feel of what the areaisall about, and gathering data about what facilities already exist.Year-round Their approach to developing tourism here encompasses the four seasons; three geographic areas and their special assets; and a philosophy called “soft” and “diffused” tourism. What this means is offering the visitor access to things we're good at in this area, and to a gentle, rural atmosphere which has always been part of the local ambience.“Things like bicycle touring, maple sugar season, apple blossom time, and enjoying the lake in winter as well as summer, withice fishing, skating, etc.,” explains Eric Pineault, a West Island native who says he’s “surprised” by the solidity and prosperity of the agricultural economy here, compared to other parts of the province. The MRC's rich history is also a selling point, he says, witharchaeological digs now investigating Native American sites near Laguerre. The group’s philosophy would encourage a growing tourist industry to base itself on what is already here, being “complementary” to agriculture without interfering with it.from page 1 Different areas “So far, we have identified three main geographic subdivisions in the MRC — the lakeshore area from Ste- Barbe to Dundee; the Covey Hill apple- growing region; and the central agricultural area, offering its own rural atmosphere, where things like bed-and- breakfasts, farm visits and hiking could be encouraged,” says geographer Sophie Bérubé.The group is also havingagoodlook atthe “gentrification” process — the increasing number of non-farming residents moving into agricultural areas, which in some cases has led to disagreements over environmental regulations and farming practices.“We're being absolutely nonjudgmental ;about this process — we just want to understand it better,” says Annie Joly, who hails from Coteau Landing.Beauregard, a Montrealer, 18 concentrating on capturing images of beauty spots and combing them with factual material for the upcoming presentation. The group’s finding will run out April 15, so they are calling their six months’ work a “pre- feasibility study” which could lead to more detailed planning later on, if local officials decided that this is the time to focus on tourism, and this is the way they want to go.At the very least, the St-Anicet group’s work will help to redress the balance within the Suroit, the larger tourist regionof whichthe MRC duHaut-St-Laurentisthe least-known and least- promoted part. The Suroit has a regional tourism office in the Valleyfield area, and serves two other MRCs besides this one.Births and Deaths -ds of Thanks, In Memoriams, Marriage Notices, Engagements, "Jouncements.DEMPSEY- O’CONNOR -
