[" “~~ The Oswalds head for retirement Patrice Laflamme mransiztea oy Denise Dawn Hubert: From now on, customers of Huntingdon’s Le 45 restaurant will need to get used to the absence of their hosts, Severino and Irene Oswald, who will no longer be around to greet their clients, lead them to tables or prepare their favourite dishes. The couple of Swiss origins have decided to head for retirement after finding new owners for the restaurant they directed for 21 years. The two restaurateurs worked their last day Sunday, April 29.At the end of the evening, they took off their hats and aprons for good and locked the main entrance for the last time, leaving behind them many appreciative clients and the thousands of meals they have carefully prepared throughout their careers.Even if they are 61 and 60, respectively, Mr.and Mrs.Oswald are in good health and could have continued cooking for several years more. However, they felt the timing was ideal for both of them to begin a well-deserved retirement.“To take up what Napoleon once said, ‘I laugh with one eye and cry with the other.” These feelings are shared, but I think that the time has come for us to leave.A person needs to know it’s time to quit when that time comes,” emphasized Mr.Oswald.Before establishing themselves in Canada, Mr.Oswald was a banker and Mrs.Oswald worked in a restaurant, after starting her career as a secretary in a hotel in St-Moritz.“At 38 years of age, I wasn’t going to be the boss.My career had reached a plateau. In my heart, I told myself there were other things to do in life,” he recalled.Mr.Oswald’s friends suggested he should buy a farm in Québec.“A banker- farmer is something little peculiar,” said Mr.Oswald who, with his wife’s approval, purchased a small farm along the Third Concession in Elgin, which the couple still owns. After an Immigration-Canada official suggested they should buy a restaurant outside of Montréal, by pure chance the couple heard that the Foyer 45 in Huntingdon was for sale. They waited a full year before officially taking possession of the restaurant.Upon their arrival in Huntingdon in 1987, the Oswalds fell under the charm of the old house, built in 1865, that houses the establishment.“This is the kind of restaurant we always wanted to have. The house had so much character and that is what impressed us,” recalled Mr.Oswald.There, the couple found a Swiss chef who specialized in Swiss and European cuisine. When he took his retirement in 1991-92, Mrs.Oswald permanently took over his place in the kitchen.[ See Restaurant page 5 ] 450.3 7 ] , ] 420 1.800.465.1420 Jal Furcal The road to recovery following surgery or an accident can be slow and sometimes involves painful weeks while the body heals.Getting people back quicker to their previous mechanical good working order, or even better, is often accomplished through physical therapy. What if you're not able to walk to therapy? In these cases, a CLSC therapist upon a doctor’s referral goes to the patient’s home and begins teaching exercises, how to use weights and elastic bands, and starts the training to get someone back on their feet and living a normal (pre-injury) life again.Huntingdon CLSC physical rehabilitation therapists André Sasseville and Sylvie Maheu are health care providers who work on a team coordinated by Veronique Cuerrier.Their goal as physical rehabilitation therapists is to help people recover and stay independent at home or in private nursing homes, rather than in the hospital or long-term care facilities.Even with therapy, recovery begins at the emotional level, the therapists explain.Sometimes the only visitors a person has, other than drafted members of their family, is the CLSC provider.Patients start to rely on them and often become attached as they visit and they start sharing what’s going on in their lives during the hour or longer therapy sessions that can be once or more a week.“It’s amazing how much some people need to talk.We develop special relationships, there’s a bond that forms between us.and when they are once again able to walk, or climb stairs, they have told us, ‘It’s you REGATE KIA 565.boul Mie andlols VALLEYFIELD 450.373.4372 oy EYE Familiprix Michel Hohuu Danh Nguyen that doing the exercise will make the problem area hurt more.“That’s where the trust comes into play,” Sasseville continued.“We guide them and give them the confidence to get there.” Anyone who has never been bedridden because of an injury or following hip surgery can only wonder what it would be like to be back at home and try to do normal functions like get up to go to the toilet, have a shower or bath, never mind imagine when you'll be able to walk again. This is where the therapists can also help, teaching people how to live independently again.Someone is a hospital setting may be recovering well as they have round-the-clock assistance from nursing staff, meals are furnished and bathroom facilities are accessible.A hospital is designed for recovering patients. Most people’s homes are set up for mobile people who didn’t require special features. The therapists work with what objects and conditions someone has at their home. The CLSC may also lend specialized equipment to help a person transfer into the tub or onto the toilet. One of the biggest gifts these therapists give to their patients is their total attention to them - concentrated quality time - something they say is a privilege for them.Huntingdon branch of the Royal Canadian Legion Members honoured for their many year's of honest Service Patrice Laflamme (Transiated by Denise Dawn Hubert) The Huntingdon branch of the Royal Canadian Legion paid a vibrant tribute to some of its still living members who have been involved in the movement for many years. In a short ceremony held Sunday afternoon, six people were honoured for their many years of honest service with the organization.Bruce Elder, Lome Fennell and Dr.Georges Lefebvre joined the local Legion branch 61 years ago.Mons Duke joined the group in 1953, while Jon Proudfoot and Morris McLean have been part of it for 51 and 50 years, respectively. Each of these individuals received a medal of honour from the president of the local Legion branch, Ronald Critchley, and from the District 13 commander, Audrey Wilson.Unfortunately, neither Proudfoot nor Duke was able to take part. The ceremony was followed by a serving from an immense cake, which local Legion leaders, the service award winners and their guests enjoyed.Bruce Elder, Morris McLean, Lorne Fennell and Dr.Georges Lefebvre were honoured for their needs to become more adaptable.Following the actions taken in St- Anicet, the town council is considering the possibility of new rolling blue bins to improve the selective collection of waste. The town hopes that as of this year, the four-litre blue boxes citizens currently have will make way for large, 360-litre containers on wheels, with lids.As well as paper, cardboard, glass and plastic, citizens will also be able to recycle milk cartons, juice boxes and plastic bags, according to municipal authorities.Residents will be able to recycle much more material the much larger container. Each of the new bins will feature two compartments.Paper and cardboard belong in one compartment, while glass, plastic and metal belong in the other. With these new bins, the municipality hopes to considerably increase its volume of recycled materials.“The elected municipal officials hope to encourage citizens to recycle even more.In 2005, only ten per cent of the total tonnage of recyclable materials were collected, and this increased to 12.5 per cent last year. This is a small increase, but we have to do much better in the next two years.Remember that the provincial objective is 65 per cent by the end of 2008,” recalled the director general and secretary-treasurer of the municipality, Marco Pilon. The municipality aims to acquire 350 rolling blue bins, which should be delivered during the summer. It will proceed by accepting tenders.Approximately 29.6 tonnes of material is recycled every year in Dundee. All of the recyclable materials are shipped to Châteauguay, where they are sorted. The Thiru vehicles, from the Montréal- based company mandated by the municipality to collect recycling, will continue to pick up blue bins every two weeks. The collection day remains Wednesday.“At this time, our recycling is done in bulk. This means paper, plastic, glass and cardboard are all collected together,” explained Pilon. The municipality began recycling in 1997.At the beginning, citizens had to drop off their recyclables on a voluntary basis in a container in the parking lot of the town hall.Later, selective collection began with blue bins distributed to households.Huntingdon county farmers’ market prepares to open Patrice Laflamme imenslated NDEI ERLE Fresh produce will once again be available from a variety of merchants united under one roof in the Haut St-Laurent.Established last summer, the Huntingdon county farmers’ market is returning this year for the summer season, beginning next week.Set up on a large section of Dalhousie Street, the public market will welcome visitors on May 12.However, the official opening of the site will be held May 19.This regional public market brings together a certain number of farmers offering a variety of produce, as well as local artisans offering their creations.Visitors can buy vegetables, fruits, cheeses, meats, breads and pastries, maple products, pies, jams, herbs, spices and other kinds of food, as well as flowers. The works of artists and craftspeople will also be sold.“All the products available here come 100 per cent from local producers,” explained the adviser for rural and bio-food development at the Haut Saint-Laurent Local Development Centre (CLD), Charles-Antoine Légaré.Currently, more than a score of farmers will open kiosks at the public market.Spaces are offered with priority given to businesses of the Haut Saint-Laurent, but the door is also open to local merchants whose produce isn’t otherwise available in the region, said Légaré.Consumers can buy their supplies at the public marked throughout May, June, July, August, September and into October.
