EE) $090 Time capsules reveal more than forgotten history With the second unearthing of a time capsule embedded in the foundation of a local elementary school, and subsequent unveiling of its contents, there has been some time to reflect on the meaning of history in small rural towns and the incredible sense of community such events inspire.In so many ways, small towns are already time capsules, in that our history is all around us, and we really have not changed that much.This was made apparent by the headline reminding all of the last call for entries for the Ormstown Exhibition in the May 12, 1947, edition of The Gleaner pulled from the capsule on Tuesday at Howick Elementary.As school Principal, David Brisebois quipped, the timing was incredible, and somewhat destined as the construction work on the school was not even scheduled for this spring.Perhaps the most important thing to take away from the time capsule is the subtle reminder that the students, faculty and staff of back then understood the schools would still exist and play as an important role in the community when found as they did when the container was sealed and buried.The fact the contents will be returned for another group 50-60 years from now to discover, along with the second canister being filled by Howick students, carries on this tradition of school and community pride, despite ugly whispers slowly starting to circulate around school board budget cuts and the possibility of closures.Valley schools are distinct in that 65 years on, and there were students and even teachers still living in the region who made their way to the school to watch today\u2019s youngsters catch a glimpse of their shared school\u2019s past.As Ormstown Fair prepares to mark their milestone 100th edition of the Expo, and The Gleaner our 150th anniversary, the time capsule at Howick Elementary was a poignant reminder of the roots that bind a community together.And, like the students filling
