(Puoro: DF) Local SQ patrolman gets medal for rescuing woman from flood \u201cI knew 1 had to do it, even though I was afraid of the strong currents and the big blocks of ice everywhere,\u201d recalls Agt.Yvan Lemelin of the Haut-St-Laurent SQ detachment of his actions to rescue an elderly woman trapped in her car during the major floods of March 1998.Two years later, Lemelin, 47.has been recognized with a medal of merit from Quebec Public Security minister Serge Ménard. The recent presentation ceremony in St-Foy brought back vivid memories of the event to the Godmanchester father of two, who has been with the Huntingdon and Haut-St-Laurent SQ detachments for a total of 18 years.Patrolling Route 202 not far from the Herdman border crossing on the morning of March 28, 1998, Lemelin had been sent out to assess the gravity of the sudden floods which hit the Valley less than three months after the ice-storm disaster.Call for help As the patrolman drove closer to a major flooded area, where deep and fast-run- ning water was carrying huge chunks of ice across the road, he saw a car stopped in the middle of the water. As he got closer, he heard a woman's voice from inside the vehicle crying out, \u201cHelp, help me!\u201d He called out to tell her to stay in her car and not try to get out, as the current was constantly getting stronger.Leaving his patrol car in a safe spot, he set out toward the stranded vehicle on foot, fighting the current in over one metre of water.\u201cI wasn't able to take very big steps \u2014 it felt like my whole body was stuck to the shot in the arm this week in the shape of a $1,000 cheque from Beauharnois-Salaberry MP Daniel Turp.Les Amis du Pont Turcot will use the money.taken from the MP's advertising budget allocation.to help finance their project to renovate the metal span and eventually convert it into a kind of open- air museum. The rejection of the project tor a federal Millennium Partnership grant was a big disappointment for the local group.but they are carrying on undaunted, with their efforts to have the bridge, built in 1889, recognized as one of the very few North American examples of this type of bridge construction. The group is still awaiting the result of a request to the Quebec government to have the Turcot Bridge designated as a historic site, which would help with the long-term goal of keeping it safe for pedestrian traffic and using it as a showcase for exhibits and a living history lesson in North American bridge construction methods. After presenting the cheque to Serge Bourdon, president of the SCABRIC watershed conservation agency, Daniel Turp took a quick tour of the bridge.\u201cI've been looking forward for along time to seeing the bridge which 1 have heard so much about,\u201d he said.Meanwhile, construction of the replacement for the Turcot span, a new bridge spanning the Chateauguay River about half a kilometre downstream from the old one, is progressing
