afternoon.Mr.Kettaneh himself is a native of Beirut, country of the era of Christ, and is very well acquainted with matters in the Near East.‘From Turkey to the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, an estimated b.- 000 miles, this is an area that is cteeped in the folk-lore of countless tongues, and simmers in the oace Damascus, oldest inhabited city in the world and set like a pearl upon the glistening banks of the Euphrates, has a history the likes that wil] never again will be recorded by man, was the battle ground of the Crusaders and the meeting place of Saladin and Richard Coeur De Lion,’ he stated.‘’This great event was the Îne- vitable result of the ceaseless struggle waged against the infidels, and no doubt influenced Saladin to bequeath his bones to Damascus as their lasting place.” At this point the speaker told his audience of the story of Ma- hammed, ‘who, on approaching the jewel of the East, refused to look at Damascus because he would jeopardize his chances of entering the heavenly paradise.” Continued "the speaker, “It took British soldiers to liberate the Lebanese from the yoke of the Vichy French, and today the country seethes Bedford Square, London, G.B.Pages 254 Germany Tomorrow is directly linked with Strasser's Hitler and I.It describes the Germany which the author forsees will arise after the war, and elaborates a plan for a peaceful, in.dustrfous country, a program of which a brief sketch was given by Douglas Reed fn his well- known Nemesis? This is a book of fundamental importance to the history of the recent past and of the immediate post-Hitler future.Otto Strasser is the founder of and the soul of the Black Front, that persistent underground organization which survived after Hitler surrendered the Socialist side of his policy. The author is the representative of the New Germany which he and his asso- clates hope will arise out of the ashes of the Third Reich. The peace which he claims cannot and will not be made with Hitler, will be made with the New Germany. An armistice, as Stras- ser shows, can only be made after the evacuation of the areas which have been forcibly and treacherously occupied, and after a hinding pledge of reparation to these plundered countries. Then the author hopes a peace conference will follow at which the Al- lles, Germany, and the Neutrals, It such remain, can settle teed off in the 10th annual New York World-Telegram hole- in-one tournament recently, and the odds against a contestant holing out with any of his five allotted shots was exactly 8720 to 1.That is one thing this celebrated tournament has determined-— the exact price against an acer acing. The figures are derived from the nine-year records of the unique event originated by Joseph P.Val, World-Telegram sports editor, in 1932.In that time, with 5232 golfers hitting 26,160 shots, only three aces have been scored. The World-Telegram tournament, widely copied and now =a standard event at almost every country club, is different in that every competitor must have registered an ace on a legitimate hole to be eligible. If just anybody could compete, there wouldn't be enough holes, let alone courses, to go around.25 INCHES 15 CLOSEST IN FIRST TOURNAMENT Jack Hagen, no relation to the Illustrious Walter, quickly became an Immortal of Joe Val's THE WESTMOUNT EXAMINER Cd > D tournament. The portly and affable Hagen, formerly professional, holed the first ace in '33, the second year of play. The first holding had seen 217 compete. The shot nearest the pin was 25 inches away.A repeat ace seemed pretty far away at the moment.Hagen was first on the tes on a morning so damp, cloudy and foggy that officials pondered a postponement.Qn his third attempt, the veteran holed out on the fly, the ball striking the edge of the cup and leaving a big dent in the soft turf, The reaction of acers was amazing.Instead of being discouraged by the perfect shot, they accepted it as a challenge. The turnout that season, nearly double that of the previous one, started the tournament on its way to becoming a tremendously popular institution.A new high for participation has been registered each year, TRAVEL MILES FOR TWO MINUTES ON TER Though 2800 have whacked Perfect Shot Is Accepted As Challenge 14,000 shots since, none has grabbed the elusive hole-in-one.The tournament also reveals Just how squirrelly a golf nut can become. They travel miles for two minutes on the tee.Of the 872 who” teed off last summer, 90 per cent had taken turns in previous events.Jack Hagen repeated as champion with a 5-luch shot that led all sectors in '88, In the decade, Hagen has planted at least one ball in the 10-foot birdie circle seven times, Only one other player hus won twice, He is Edward D.Searle, a young architectural engineer.1n "34, Seurle brought out a spectal No.6% iron he purchased just for the tournament, and copped top honors with a 17-Inch shot.He repeated the Wanderers batted first and made 153 runs for four declared to which Westmount replied with 121 the end of the innings being played in semi darkness and the batsmen unable to see the ball.Once again
