in Brazil they are Bandeirantes; in France, Les Eclaireuses; in Norway, Speidere; in Greece, Pro- skopines—but, wherever they are, and whatever they are called, all uphoid the same code of loyally to God and neighbourliness.Tangible evidence of the internationalism of the Girl Guide Movement is seen in the fnterna- tional knowledge badges which are part of the Girl Guide and Ranger (older ‘'teen-ager) programs of training, in the international camps and conferences held the world over since the early days of the Movement and in the practical help given by the Guides of free countries during the war to help less fortunate children.Guides of the British Commonwealth and of Western Hemisphere republics have done much to help their sister Guides and other children in liberated Europe and the East to re-establish them- gelves. The British Guide International Service has a number of highly trained adult teams working under UNRRA in Greece, Holland and Germany, These operate mobile kitchens and canteens, work in camps for displaced persons, and one team, a completely equipped hospital unit headed by an Australian woman doctor, established a 100-bed hospital for Dutch typhoid patients In 48 hours, Since 1941 Canadian Guides have made and shipped nearly 60,000 items of clothing to child- .ren of the bombed areas of Great Britain, some of which has found its way to the Continent as well.‘ Cleaning Early HAVE YOUR VENETIAN BLINDS CLEANED AND PAINTED NOW VENETIAN BLIND LAUNDRY co.WE C 1566 seu pau e ts yésa ea DO UGC URL a 1100000300 Canada shared in the task undertaken by the Western Hemisphere Committee of printing the Brownie Handbook in Polish for Polish girls in refugee camps.Last October the 64,000 Canadian Guides worked very hard for the National Clothing Collection and also, on their own, shipped material and findings for uniforms to their sister Guides in Greece.Used uniforms and surplus equipment were collected and sent to Holland.Canadian Guides have recently set up a permanent “Guide World Friendship Fund” for gifts to children in the occupied countries and to promote international conferences and training generally.Pioneer Chatelaines To Be Subject Of Talk By Sophy Elliott “Canadian Wilderness Chatelaines’’, illustrated, will be the subject of the talk given this afternoon at the Chateau de Ra- mezay to the Women’s Branch of the Antiquarian and Numismatic Society, by Sophy Elliott, West- mount, author and lecturer. The speaker will discuss the chatelaines of the Province of Quebec and Ontario, telling of their early struggles and tribulations and the valuable service, never recognized, they rendered the country, which was definitely a very powerful influence in establishing settlements in the bush lands.POST-WAR NYLONS Canadian women will find postwar nylon stockings considerably improved over the tirst nylons that were produced early in the war.New knitting techniques, especially suited to the distinct character of nylon yarn, have been evolved.Post-war nylons will not be “just nylons’, they will have new features such as “balanced fabric’ which describes Orient’s new method of distributing wearing strain so as to prolong the lite of the stocking. The annual U.S.flour consumption amounts to 160 pounds per capita.Approximately 85 pounds of this is used in the form of bread, and the remaining 75 In cakes and pastries, ; SINATRA, GENE KELLY and KATHRYN GRAYSON, who are starred in: the breezy, Technicolor musical feature, “Anchors Aweigh,” which starts at the Seville United Theatre on Saturday until Tuesday night.Biography And 1Continued from Page 3 Cote St.Antoine Road, with two solitary houses upon it near the upper end.The Upper Lachine Road could only be reached by going up St.Antoine Road and turning down St.Luke Road (since renamed Decarie Boulevard) near the church at Notre Dame de Grace, A year after my purghase, the real estate “boom” having exhausted itself in Toronto, struck Montreal, and I could have sold my small block at three times its cost, but did not do so.West of Greene Avenue the Grey Nuns sold to the Voligny Drummond Syndicate a large block at twenty- five cents a foot, having some years before sold the more valuable land on Green Avenue at ten cents.West of the Nun's property the late John Monk sold to W.A.Curry a property for eighty thousand dollars, for which he some years before. On this property Mr, Curry laid out Ken- sington Avenue down to my property, but had no outlet.Further West, Mr.Francis Dolan purchased the St.Germain property, and laid out Dolan Avenue, now Lansdowne Avenue. Then Mr.E.Hudon bought a property and opened Victoria Avenue, and next to Mr, Hudon, Messrs Bryson and Warminton bought the large Hurtubise farm, and laid it out in sireets running east and west to Claremont Avenue, Nearly all these properties ran from obove the Cote St.Antoine Road to the brow of the ridge overlooking St.Henri, and formed a large part of the plateau new Westmount, As these new avenues had no outlet except St.Antoine Road, their owners, who had bought on speculation, were naturally anxious to secure an outlet at or near the south or lower end of their properties, and when Mr.Curry found ,me disposed to favour an avenue running west from Greene Avenue to the Upper Lachine Road, he interviewed the principal proprietors on the proposed line of road which would, when built, form a grand western entrance into- the ci¥y on the upper level. The result was the formation of the Cote St.Antoine Road Company, of which I became president, The line decided upon was that now known as Western Avenue, the name being cnosen at my suggestion.I interviewed personally most of the non-specu- lative proprietors, some of whom were opposed to having their nice farms and orchards broken up.The Grey Nuns, with that sound judgment which marks all their actions, offered the land to continue St.Cotherine Street, instead of allowing it tp be turned into Sisson’s Lane, as was then proposed and afterwards effected. This would have suited me better, as my nejghbours to the south would gladly have given their quota of land, which one of my neighbours on the Western Avenue line would not do, and I bad to contribute more than my share. As the St.Catherine Street line, however, would have been blocked at the deep ravines, and every ine wanted a straight avenue, the Nuns finally consented to the Western Avenue line, but only to the width of sixty feet. This was got over by getting their consent to sixty feet French measure, which our contractor explained was about sixty-six feet English, which the other proprietors had agreed to give, Western Avenue as planned was to be two miles long, but by the time the road was opened to Cote St, Luke Road, a little over two-thirds of that distance, the ‘boom’ had collapsed, and the western portion was never opened, except about a hundred yards at the west end, where Mr.Hudon had another property.Lachine Road, a landslide having sent that road north to the line of Western Avenue.Te story of this, the most disastrous land “boom” Montreal and its suburbs ever experienced.would fill a volume, but can only be briefly referred to here. The Voligny - Drummony Syndicate, after expending over thirty-six thousand doilars, gave the Nuns back their land.Mr, Curry, after paying Mr.Monk a first instalment on his eighty thousand dollar purchase, and paying many thousand dollars to open Kensing- ton Avenue, transferred it back to Mr.Monk, with the mortgages on the lots he had sold, and although Mr.Monk treated him with great consideration, both Mr.Curry and his wife died of broken hearts, owing to their heavy losses, Francis Dolan, a popular and wealthy retail dry goods merchant, who, as already mentioned, opened Lansdowne Avenue, and bad spent money building cottages, was also obliged to transfer lan .dand improvements back to the St.Germain Estate.Ephraim Hudon, who opened Victoria Avenue, was no less unfortunate, while the largest and most important of all these operators in real estate, Messrs Warminton and Bryson, also lost heavily. They purchased and laid out in streets what was known as the Hurtubise property, which later became the property of La Banque du Peuple, and was purchased by the late T.C.Bulmer, at about six cents a foot, thirteen years ago.All these would have been good investments had the parties been able to hold, but they had bought more than they could carry. My land was paid for, and I sold it some years ago at forty- five cents a foot. This looks like a large profit, but deducting twenty-two thousand feet tô open Western Avenue, and, adding interest and taxes to the cost, the profit on the transaction was very small, TRINITY NEW CLUB Among the door prizes being offered by the Trinity “New” Club, at the Military Whist on Tuesday, at 8.15 p.m.are a mantel radio and an electric win by virtue of a basket scored with only half a minute left to play. The Purple and Whites are hoping that the fates will be smiling on them when they meet the league-leading Baron Byng outfit on the Cote St.Antoine Road boys’ floor next Wednesday afternoon.CLOSE GAME Monday's Westmount—Strath- cona tilt was a close, hard-fought affair all the way. After the rough house tactics that the Outremonters employed in their first game with the locals, there were many who thought that the return engagement would develop into a free-for-all.But the game was a fairly clean one and neither side could make any legitimate beefs about Frank Ulley's officiating. The Davies men were one point up when the quarter time whistle blew. The count was 9-8 but the Outremonters erased that one point margin in the second stanza and when the half-time rest rolled around the hosts were leading by three points, 20-17.The last half saw both teams display some grade-A basketball. The Westmount outfit outscored the winners 11-9 in an action- packed third quarter but that left the Academites one point up, 29-28, The last quarter was a bitterly fought see-saw affair that saw the lead change hands several times and had the strictly partisan spectators suffering from high blood pressure. The Purple and White sweat- ered lads were leading 33-32 with.8 minute to go and their fast- shifting zone defence was holding marvelously when suddenly Alexander shook himself loose and flipped the leather through the hoop from the corner. The Westmounters were just In the act of taking the ball out from under their honors.Close on his heels, however, was Westmount's captain, Bud Cochrane, who potted six haskets and two (free throws for a total of 14 points.Godel, of Strathcona, was third with 12.Wolf Siemers, flashy West- mount forward, did not see his usual amount of service in Monday's game due to a twisted ankle that he sustained in the battle with West Hill last week. The Westmounters were also missing the services of Pete Trueland who had to sit the game out because 6f a two-game suspension he drew for fighting in the first Strathcona encounter.Trueland will return to the lineup next Wednesday against Baron Byng. The local cagers will play en exhibition game, probably against Montreal High, at Sir Arthur Gymnasium tomorrow night at 7.00.The tilt will serve as a prelude to the
