“Y” DRIVE Close to 25,000 persons were enrolled in clubs, interest groups, and other organizations within the framework of the Montreal Y.M.CA.during 1946, it was revealed recently at Central ‘Y’ on Drummond street. In addition to this nearly 4,000 persons were taught to swim, and another 1,000 qualified as life-savers.These statistics are representative of the records prepared by the association in their annual campaign which is scheduled to open : on November 10.The campaign will be headed by O.B.Thornton as general chairman.Associated with Mr.Thornton in directing the campaign will be J.W.McConnell, honorary chairman and S.G.Dobson, honorary vice-chairman.Other members of the campaign committee will be announced shortly.- Meanwhile officials pointed out that the $154,000 objective of the drive this year represents only 15 per cent of the year's budget. For the remaining 85 per cent the Y.M.C.A.is self-sustaining.The funds are required to maintain the normal functions of the ‘Y’ in its branch buildings, summer eamps, and community activities in Lachine, Ville St.Pierre, Point St.Charles, Jean Talon district, Rosemount, Hochelaga, Montreal East, Terminal Park, and Maisonneuve. In referring to the campaign drive, officials noted that the theme of this year's campaign is to be “Training Youth in Citizenship”.This is accomplished, they pointed out, by the many sided program which the Y.M.C.A.has to offer including, forma] and informal education, religious training, com- - munity service, social recreation, and physical fitness.AGENCIES FOR WORLD ORDER The new agencies for world economic organization represent a genuine and broadly conceived attempt to establish a workable code of economic behaviour between nations, says the current Monthly Review of The Bank of Nova Scotia. The Review is devoted to a discussion of the purposes and development of the International Monetary Fund, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAQ) and the projected International Trade Organization (ITO).These new organizations represent the only framework for economic order and co-operation on which there is a large measure of agreement between nations.Never before have nations been prepared to go so far.Never before have such plans even re- reived serious consideration.Even though the machinery is incomplete and in many respects inadequate, a good deal has been accomplished. The goodwill and planning which lie behind these efforts to achieve international order hold hdpe that the world may rise out of the state of economic anarchy and conflict which was characteristic of the period between the two world wars. The Review admits that there is an air of unreality about .the activities of these international organizations in the face of the present economic crisis, as exemplified by the breakdown of the convertibility of sterling, by the aggravated dollar problem, and by the desperate shortages of food and fuel in Europe and elsewhere.“Nevertheless,” says the Review, “it would be a great mistake to dismiss these international efforts at economic organization as futile or unimportant.” Though they cannot solve the present crisis and though conditions have been very unfavourable to their effective operation, their activities and the planning concerned with their formation ave been of great value in the difficult circumstances of transition and reconstruction.THE NEW SKIRT STYLES * Apparently the most important issue in North America is the change in style from knee length to half-mast skirts.A new op- wear what they please. Some sinister interests are alleged to be behind this style change, although no selfish motives have been “attributed to the designers of fall hats that threaten marital peace throughout Canada and the United tates.Half-mast skirts seem to be a reasonable compromise between the demands of bare- ‘en and hide-’em cults.Few of the knotted muscles of the lean athletic girls, or the flabby calves of the languid ladies, are worth viewing anyway.Surely the men back from womanless battle areas are already fed up with the search among the many legs on display for a few that reward a good look.None of them shins is even better than From the practical viewpoint, the half.mast skirt has many advantages in the care and use of the legs.It is long enough to protect the knees from chapping and short enough to avoid chafing the ankles. It provides some warmth for stockingless legs that have not grown enough hair to protect them against severe frost.A good homespun, or Harris Tweed, skirt should go a long way, at least a longer way, toward affording the kind of protection our grandmothers provided so prudently. There is nothing to the argument that the longer skirt will impede progress. With the short work-week and the leisurely pace of production, few city women are in a hurry to get anywhere.Farm women will continue to wear overalls, or slacks, at outdoor work.—The Scene from Shingwank Farm.- SECOND.SERIES BONDS SELLING WELL In announcing sales of the Second Series of Canada Savings Bonds to date, Bank of Canada officials drew attention to the fact that the average individual purchase so far has been substantially above forecosts.Payroll Savings applications averaged $195.70 to date compared with a final figure of $183,72 for the First Series which was issued last Fall. The combined average purchase of Series Two so far came to $539.13 as against a final average of $409.76 last year despite the reduction to $1,000 of holdings in any one name.; Total sales of the Second Series of Canada Savings Bonds up to October 24th notched the hundred million dollar mark with reported totals of $100,562,700 from 341,532 applications.Sales under the Payroll Savings Plan showed no signs of slackening, and accounted for nearly half the dollar amount for a figure of $48,319,550, and for more than two thirds the number of applications at 246,911.Substantial portions of Payroll Savings Plan sales were represented by purchases of $614,900 by the Armed Forces, $3,334,800 by the Civil Service, and $6,058,- 500 by railway employees.Have you bought yours, yet? That Rescue Party?portunity to an interesting incentive, : Some of the classes of Queen's School had very enjoyable Halloween Parties. One given by, the girls of Room 16 -was very enthusiastically appreciated.Suitable decorations were made including pumpkins, blackboard decorations, posters, drawings and place cards. Some prizes and refreshments were enjoyed by all concerned.Seasonal decorations are adding much to the
