shaken youngster home where he was taken to the Homoeopathic Hospital for a checkup. He was released when it became apparent he had sustained no serious injury.- Local Committee Named For Royal Visit To City The city council's committee on the tour of the Royal -couple through Westmount is still in conference on the matter and had nothing further to report this week. They are meeting with Brig.Guy Gauvreau as to the matter of security officers, auxiliary police and personnel to line the streets. The committee is composed of Councillors H.L.Blachford, Roy Guest House Assn.Demand Relaxed City By-Law - IE “We are all weary of the way the City Fathers have taken mate ters into their hands in a dictatorial manner and persist in depriving local citizens of the right to earn their bread in a respectable way,” Elphege Menard, president of the Westmount Property and Guest House Owners, told a meeting of that association Tuesday night in Victoria Hall, He sald this was the reason the association had been organized— “to show the gang in the City Hall that we can strike, and hard.” He told the members that it was time for a show down with the mayor and aldermen. The association's executive was going to cail for a meeting with them and if they would fight it out in the courts, at Quebec and in the January municipal elections, Mr.Menard said they were going to ask the city council for a re-zoning of the by-law banning guest houses from certain sections of Westmount. He wanted it to include all of the area south of Cote St.Antoine Road, Sherbrooke Street and Holden Avenue. The president also stated that the association was going to ask the city to open up Sherbrooke Street between Roslyn and Greene Avenues as a commercial zone, He stated that the association was going to ask for strict enforcement of the licensing of all guest houses as well as adherence to the city’s health, fire and building regulations.“We want to insist that our members maintain their establishments on a high level,” he said. The association wanted to play their part in keeping Westmount a clean, respectable, residential district. He called upon members to bear down on noisy tenants and drunken parfies; to cater only to people of the.highest calibre. In the view of the association the guest houses had made the city a more desirable place to live in.“In these times,” Mr.Menard stated, ‘when costs are so high and accommodation so scarce, the guests houses of this community have been of great service to the Metropolis.” He pointed out that the guest houses provided homes for no less than 4,000 people. He said they were comprised of maiden ladies, who came from respectable families, but lacked the means to support expensive apartments; retired businessmen, who once held high executive positions; and white collar workers who held jobs in many of the city's large firms. He added with some humor that some of these young white collar workers “no doubt work for the very people who are trying to turn them out on the streets.” Mr.Menard described the incongruity of the situation the guest house owners found themselves in.They invested their money in these establishments, paid taxes on them; yet were denied the right to put them to profitable use by the city council, Speaking of the commercialization of Sherbrooke Street he told of the predicament property (Continued on page 2) Runaway Car Hits Two Other Autos On The Boulevard | A runaway car on The Boule vard Monday smashed into on him with two men frantically dashing after it in an attempt to stop it.It crashed into Mr, Girouard’s car and carommed off into a parked car owned by Michael Franklin, of 4238 Decarie Boulevard.10° .The runaway car was owned by L.J.Salter, of 1470 Bernard Street.Assessment Hikes Upheld By Council In spite of the formidable arguments presented by citizens appealing their valuations on the city’s roll, Mayor J.S.Cameron and the city council turned them down with a solid no.The appellants appeared before , the City Council and board of assessors in the council chambers a week ago last Tuesday and presented their protests. For the most part citizens who appeared felt the hikes in valuation were unjust and unwarranted.Arguments presented were apparently not strong enough to sway the council meeting in closed session. No reasons were given, Montrose Avenue Is Scene Of Collision A collision was reported be tween two cars on Montrose Ave: nue Tuesday by the Westmouni 1 the juniors each year proved its worth in the season of 1924-25 when the majority of our famous teams.of the previous season had graduated fortunately leaving a few good players on which to build a team around. In football the nucleous from thé previous years championship team and others coming up from the senior B and junior teams who had both won their titles we were able to field a very powerful team.Albert Ayer was captain and half and his ability while running at full speed to kick a drop over the bar without breaking stride wag ably supported by Henny Ewing a very tricky runner and Plunger, That future great, who played standout ball on the big city teams in both football and hockey, Kenny Copland, was also a member.Christy Laing a very tall boy with a terrific boot averaging over 50 yards or.most kicks and many times getting well over 60 yards was excellent. At quarter later x LET ME HELP YOU DISCOURAGED?SORROW?PROBLEMS?SICKNESS?Would special prayer help Hamilton Tiger team. When Wilf was just a little shaver in the junior schools I happened to be passing when I noticed this little lad calling signals and I went over and asked him his name and age and told him to report to me when he entered high school as I wanted him for quarterback. At snap we had John Woelever and he was good either on offence or defence, on the line we had three big men, Alex Marshall a real high knee plunging type; Chas.Lindsay a good two-way player; Chas.Hoffman, a tough hardy boy who loved the heavy going; Ewart Hines, a quieter type; and at O.S.Stew McNaughton and Art experience. The basic plays and formations were the same on the three teams. When they went in to replace they were right at home.; In reading the papers of recent years it is very pleasing to see the number of noted tennis players that started -their careers at the courts near the school such as Laird Watt, Gordy McNeil, George Robinson, Charles Leslie, Stew Veysey, Jim Spencer and many others. In skiing the- school since 1922 have won the majority of titles in all classes. In basketball we did not do well but at all times provided good opposition for our opponents, the season sandwiched as it was between the football and hockey did not leave us much time for training.Hockey In hockey though we were plagued with sickness through the season and had a number of our key men off in the early games nevertheless we were able to squeeze through and then go on to meet the winners of the city junior leagues for the provincial crown. In the first game we met the St.Augustine team and won and a week later we were called on to meet the Victoria team. This game was played in.the Mount Royal Arena following an earlier senior game. The starting time was near 11 p.m.and it was a three period game which finished with us on the top of a 4 to 3 score at 1 a.m.The following morning at 2 p.m.we were on the same ice to meet the strong and fresh Sons of Ireland team from Quebec, this game went into overtime and at the end of 90 min.it was still deadlocked 2 to 2 at the limit we were allowed to play. The final game was a hummer with both teams playing wide open trying to score. With the score 2 to 1 against us we sent every man up trying to get the equalizer when the Sons got a breakaway and scored. We still kept trying and in another break the Sons scored the final goal.It was a heart breaker for the team as some of the players had played without a rest during the three games. They certainly were iron men in those days.It was an insult to ask them if they were tired, needless to say they could not have done it in the hurry scurry type of hockey. It was all positional hockey then each man having his own man to cover. The team had as its captain Jimmie Thomson and with him on the wings were Ken Copland and Larry Ireland.Larry was the son of that great sport and gentleman who never missed a school game, Rev.Canon Ireland of St.Philips.On defence, we had Christy Laing and Geo.Crombie, in goal Henny Ewing who played up forward as well. Our second line was Jack Recorder Laverty Sends H.Charest To Bordeaux Jail A sentence of one year in Bordeaux Jail was meted out to Henri Charest, of Western Avenue, and stealing $200 worth of jewellery. He was arrested by Det.Sgts.H.Belec and H.Ward.He pleaded guilty before Recorders Court.Police Chief R.A.Byford said he expected the boy would be arraigned on further charges by the Verdun Police.Local Residents.(Continued from Page 1) Washington from Dorval airport where they will stay for two days before returning here for a two- day travel east along the provincial highway to 11th avenue, Lachine. The party will swing south at this point to Sherbrooke street, west to 13th avenue, south to Provost street, east to 10th avenue, south through LaSalle Park to Notre Dame, east to 7th avenue, south to St.Louis street, along St.Louis and St.Joseph streets to the junction of the provincial highway. From there they will travel on St.James Street police said when Albert Myette, of 4128 St.Antoine Street, backed his vehicle out of a lane and failed to notice the parked truck belonging to Rene Gi- guere, of 329 Selby Street.McKeown and K.McNider, the latter a fiery tempered lad.Larry Ireland was a very quiet serious type of boy.One game we needed a goal very badly and as Larry was sitting beside me I said, “Larry go on and get me a goal.” His answer, “All right, sir.” From the faceoff he went in and scored. This happened a number of times in other games, and the boys used to say sir, “send LaLrry in for a goal.” Christy Laing was inclined to be lazy and would not hit the line in football as he seemed to feel he should come out of the game as clean as he went in.I had tried every trick in the book to get him to drive straight ahead instead of skirting the ends and loosing ground. He had every thing a player needed. He was big and very fast.At last I pulled a fast one on him.I had noticed his deep interest in a very çharming young lady at the school.Using her as a foil I made up an imaginary story criticizing his play and wondering why he didn't go forward like the other plaers. It worked. In the game that afternoon Christy scored two touches and kicked three points, That was the first time he came out of a game really dirty. The other players wanted to know what I had given him.To be a good coach it requires a good knowledge of psychology and knowing each boy in order to get the best out of him.And at all times giving him a reason for e move h make.Tee ie In te mate 101: he declared, The minister had to step into the picture when several municipalities decided to adopt their own daylight saving times which would have created serious confusion. It will be remembered that last year Montreal and all the sur- roynding municipalities including Free To Public Start October Westmount residents who wisH to improve their French should take note that free classes in French conversation for adults will be started in six local schools in October. The classes have been organized under the auspices of Hon, Omer Cote, Provincial Secretary.J.E.Cloutier, director general of the department made the announcement this week. The night classes will he held in the following schools: St.An- tonin School, 5008 Coolbrook avenue; Cherrier School, 811 Cherrier street; De La Mennais School, 6510 St.Denis street; Barthelemy School, 630 St.Roch street; St.Brendan's School, 5937 9th avenue, Rosemount; and Notre Dame de- la-Paix School, 3500 Wellington street.Registration at all schools will be taken on October 1 between the hours of 7.30 and 9.00 p.m.BETTER FLAVOR A choice secret in preserving is combination of flavors. The boils ing together of two or more fruits results in a superior product of ine describable flavor. The fruits that blend best in my experience for preserves and marmalades are the following: Apples and grapes Apples and black currants Apples and quinces Rhubarb and currants Green-gages and lemons Grapefruit and oranges Tangerines and oranges or grapefruit Oranges and rhubarb (with or without strawberry juice) Raspberries and red currants Raspberries and cherries Plums and apricots.Westmount extended daylight saving time until October 28." Rural towns and provincial cities were not in favor of the extended period and Quebec was asked to make a uniform ruling.LIL REL Te 3 TY optrars 3 British-trained 244 Victoria Av I 3 Lx NES porn fT rr he uC Earp pet a prowess Ar ron) page épi A pe ee gr Seon RES Te Es pe a CO ts AoC il DES us san sir nr dt du PAGE EIGHT Mrs.John Moore, of Westmount, The Liesse Hunt Club will give has returned from a trip to Cape |luncheons this coming Saturday Cod, Mass, and Florida.and Sunday to the officials of the Annual Fall Horse Show being Mrs.M.G.MacDonald of 227 given in aid of the S.P.C.A.The Elm Avenue, has arrived home luncheon committee consists of after a trip through western Cana- Mrs.J.H, Stewart, chairman, Mrs.da.In Edmonton she was the guest of her cousin, Lieutenant- | MTS.Governor J.J.Bowlen of Alberta, and she visited her sister in Vancouver. She was accompanied by her son-in-law and daughter, Mr.and Mrs.Ford, and their son.cute I] Wy WESTERN!!! Peebles made good his boast that R.M.R.'s will be the, team to beat this year for Q.R.F.U, senicr honours. On Sunday afternoon the Army team whitewashed Eastward dt the Maisonneuve gridiron 12-0 before close to 5,000 spectators.8 Westmount were not so lucky as they fell to Lakeshore Flyers at Valois in a game which could have gone either way.The final result was Lakeshore 18 Westmount 12.= In the score. The newly formed Lakeshore team showed fight all the way and with a few more games under their belt will improve.Solly Maestro’s Maple Leafs do not seem to be as strong as they were last season. This is due to numerous changes as several of the players were over the Junior age limit. In one of two junior games played on Sunday St.Aloysius edged Verdun 6-0 in a game which was lost and won on fumbles, The new Auditorium park in Verdun- was the venue.for the game. Many complimentary.remarks were passed on the excellent condition of the ground.St.Aloysius would appear to be the team to watch in the junior section. This will be the third year for -most of the St.Al team and consequently they are a well drilled outfit, East End Alouettes played to a five all tie with Point S.Charles at Montreal East. The shortness of the playing field prevented the teams kicking for single points as local rules were observed.Sparking the R.M.R.attack were Mike Maruska and Danny |X Johnston, who starred with the champions Lakeshore squad last season.Sandy Spence, one of the |U fastest men in local football, was a big factor in the Army win.Col.MacPherson, officer commanding the regiment, kicked off with Reg.Watson, Q.R.F.U.president holding the ball.Others taking part in the ceremonies were Major John Coupland ano Q.R.F.U.secretary Norman Gillespie, The RMR-Eastward game was highlighted by the hipper-dipper style of running done by Army's Mike Maruska, classy half-back from last year’s edition of the Lakeshore Flyers.Danny Johne son stood out as time ‘and time again he ripped through the Fighters’ line to move the yard sticks.Track star Sandy Spence showed: a lot of form and speed as he scampered around.end for long | gains.Early in the first quarter, Mike Maruska sent the Machine Gunners ahead with a field goal that split the uprights from 27 yards out.About 5 minutes later, Nor- rie Masterman hoofed a long one that rolled over the deadline for a single point. There was no scoring in the second quarter, as play see-sawed back and forth around centre field. In the third quarter, R.M.R.made it 7-0, on single points kicked by Masterman, Danny Johnson and 2/Lt.Johnny Kay.About half way through the final period, Mike Maruska intercepted one of Quarterback Murphy’'s many pass attempts on the Eastward 35 yard stripe. Two plays later, Sandy Spence tock a pitch-out from Quarterback Ray Tremblay and raced out toward the sidelines and threw a long forward to Mike Maruska for the only major score of the game. One of the deciding factors in this game was the big, heavy RMR front wall.On numerous occasions Lt.Dave, Vass, Hank Cant- well and Freddie Bridel broke through to throw Eastward ball carriers for large losses.: Eastward attempted 26 forward passes, completing.4, and having five intercepted.RMR tried 10, completed 2, and had one intercepted. The soldiers racked up 14 first downs, compared to Eastward's 9.Bobby Waugh tackled well for Eastward as did the whole line but their attack bogged down time after time due principally to receivers dropping passes.Ike Am- romin and Eddie Murphy looked good on the Eastward squad which Westmount at Eastward R.M.R.at Lakeshore , Junior Soitthshore at Pt, St.Charles should show now on.Westmount trailed Lakeshore Flyers twice during the senior game at Valois on Sunday afternoon.- Ron Farrington opened the scoring for the home team when he got over for a touchdown in the first quarter.Eddie McLeod evened the count for Westmount when he ran 20 yards to get a T.D.Tom Cloherty brought the crowd to itg feet with a spectacular T0 yard run for Lakeshore ending up be- improvement from score in the third quarter.Rudy Janis took a pass from Bobby Pugh to again tle the score for winner. The Mount Royal Cardinals are standing by to play the winner for the league championship. The Mounties ousted the St.Henry Red Sox 4-2 in their best- of-seven.semi-final last week.Hyland has called for an early 1.30 p.m, start Sunday in order to give the teams plenty of time to complete a doubleheader, if necessary.Hyland said the league is making an effort to arrange several night games next week for the final series.* It must be remembered, however, that the best teams in recent years ‘| have all come from the coast and until the westerners have had an opportunity to show their class it would be well’to hedge on forecasts.“The game on Saturday will be the first game of a three game final series, games to count.Ulster won out against Italia at Toronto last Saturday
