T.J.Hughes this week asked Westmount citizens to note the difficulties facing the Westmount Roads Department in keeping the streets under repair. There is no way of making repairs until the spring thaw brings frost out of the ground.he said.Until then, any material used to fill holes Is first squeezed by water freezing in pavement cracks at right and then broken up by the pounding of traffic during the day.Western Avenue is in particular- I bad condition hecause it was under heavy use last summer while traffic was diverted from Sherbrooke Street during the widening, he stated.Large-scale repairs are being considered, but no work can be undertaken until May when all frost is gone.Numerous Items Lost In Parks The Westmount Parks Depart- | ment has again appealed to citizens to check on whether their children have los: any items of clothing or toys.Hundreds of these items are piling ap in the Parks’ comfort stations.Owners may claim them by identification of the lost articles.Among the Educational Policies BERLIN — East Germany has passed another milestone on its part toward a Marxist education gystem with the completion of university reform. Its main six universities, with 35,000 students, have been transformed into education factories.East Germany is crying out for more iron, coal, and steel to force a higher export rate and contribution to the “peace front.” To guarantee success, it must be able to call on qualified engineers, researchers, and state administrators, who not only can technically push the programs through, but unquestionably will accept the political motives for them.To some extent what has happened to the coal miner, now working a harder shift than in 1950 on the coal face, also is happening in the university classroom. The 35,000 men and women who began their academic year in in September are going through a rugged cramming drill, For one thing, they were confronted with an academic year of 10 months instead of the customary seven. There are 30 hours a week of lectures and study groups.Special cadres of ‘reliable” students make sure the norms are fulfilled.' ' American educationists in West Berlin claim that altogether about one third of the new East German university curriculum con- athée are ine sists of compulsory courses in Marxism-Leninism and other political lectures, as well as Russian language and literature, Degrees in combined fields are abolished and replaced with “one field” curriculums which aim at turning out highly qualified but narrowly educated specialists. To discourage ‘emigration’ te the West, professors are paid abe normally high salaries. In addition, the state honors them as one of the most important of all classes. An East German lecturer earns between 50 and 200 per cent more than his colleague in West Germany. He may receive the equivalent of about $4,360 a year against the West Germans’ $1,400 a year.Apart from keeping a lookout for Communism, the students are equally alert to the dangers of right-wing extremism. They don't go for neonaziism.THE SCIENCE OF STACKING .Improper methods of handling and piling heavier objects often lead to injury to workers.Careless stagking of metal bars, pipes or large wooden objects may result in shifting in the stacks, causing upper layers to fall or lower layers to slide.New men on this type of job should get instruction from the plant safety man who ig familiar with the hazards of the work, Ç * :-2102 AMD Eata agpr tira, & COMPAN Free Estimates WESTMOUNT REPAIRED © REFINISHED © SUPPLIED LAID © FINISHED © CLEANED A.Ross Grafton 4486 ST.CATHERINE STREET WE.2323 re Æ The ammer "50 YEARS IN 1.WESTMOUNT" WE.WATCH REPAIRS OHMAN'S Reliaole JEWELLERS 4 Certified Watchmakers 4046 1216 Greene Ave.e Ski WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, MARCH 14, 1952 PAGE THREE Instruction For The Lot rray Hill Fre TT 7 RI EE 7 Sy SE Taking advantage of free ski instruction on Murray Hill are a group of young enthusiasts observing the plough technique employed by instructer Hugh Cummings of Salt Lake City, Utah.Cummings, who turned down a berth on the United States Olym- and Peter : a exhibition of paintings by Ruth Dingle Douet Douet will be shown March 15 to at the Douet’s Studio; 315 Elm This exhibit will be of parti- Siar interest to many in the com- nunity as Mrs.Douet is the in- ‘the Westmount Athletic Grounds, 2 LADIES AND GENTLEMEN ! 310 HP.Engine Recently unveiled was a special sports - type car, designed by Chrysler Corporation enginêers with a body built by Carrozzeria Ghia of Milan, Italy, from Chrysler’s design. This experimental car, designated K-310, though now powered by a standard Fire Power engine, also can use the new 310-horse- power engine designed by Chrysler.Dimensionally, the new engine is almost the same as the Fire- Power, with 331 cubic inches piston displacement and the same hore and stroke.Valves have heen enlarged to permit it to “breathe more deeply,” exhaust manifolds have heen redesigned, four carburetors are used and the compression ratio is raised to 8.1 to 1.The 310- horsepower rating as 5,200 r.p.mis attained with commercial premium fuel.It is understood that with special high-octane gasoline the engine has shown better than one horsepower for each cubic inch of piston displacement. The body of the car is so distinctive that there is nothing else that might serve to form a basis of comparison, The whole vehicle speaks speed, grace, ability and competence, The seating arrangement is original, with what might Cripples Prepare Letters For Easter Seal Campaign The tremendous task of addressing, stuffing and sealing 300,000 appeals envelopes, which will eventually carry Easter Seals to resident; throughout Greater-Montreal has been going on for many weeks.À group of crippled workers many confined to wheel chairs, have been doing this work in preparation for the third annual drive for funds to be launched shortly. They have been assisted by members of the Inner Wheel and other organizations, and also by Rotarians, who will gather on Tuesday, March 11 to put finishing touches to the stuff- # ing operation. The letter being mailed to citizens 1s signed by Earl T.Moore, Fresident of the Rotary Club of x Montreal, which is sponsoring the campaign in this district, and Rene B.Perrault, President of the Quebec Easter Seal Society. It invites the recipients of the sheet of Easter Seals that is enclosed, to put à dollar bill (or more) in the return envelope, and thus do their share, in the season of hope and charity that is particularly ne associated with Easter, to help fulfill the hope that many little bodies, now twisted and bent, will be made well and strong. There are thousands of cripples in Quebec Province, many of whom have not yet been given much help, because of lack of organization and funds. But hundreds have been helped, the letter says, through the support given Easter Seals. Many organizations throughout the Province have dedicated themselves to the welfare of cripples, through the distribution of Easter Seals, and at least $100,000 is required to fill the growing and continuous need.“If the enthusiasm of these crippled workers is an example of community spirit, we are confident that our goal will be reached,” James L.Busfield, executive secretary and manager of the Society, said today.“The funds raised will finance services for crippled children in this commun- ily and support a nationwide program of education, research and direct services by the Canadian Council for Crippled Children, with which the Quebec Easter Seal Society is associated”.be called a sedan motif, For all of its low sleekness — it is 59 inches high from road to roof — the car affords plenty of headroom and is generous in all dimensions productive of riding comfort.Large wire wheels are used. The wheel base is 12515 inches. The K-310 car at present is listed as purely experimental and when and whether it will become commercially available is conjectural, as this depends on many factors that cannot be determined at this time.THE LONELY YEARS Loneliness may be a greater; LC.A.C « +» On Food Packaging .-.« « « Confusion To The Consumer .+ Reports A short time ago your reporter had the pleasure of hearing the National President of the Canadian Association of Consumers give a most thought-provoking address to a Food Processors Convention. Some of the points made were very telling ones.C.A.C.'s President, Mrs.W.R.Walton Jr, dealt particularly with present methods of ent systems are used for marking and packing that the poor consumer ends up in a state of complete bewilderment. It was Mrs.Walton's opinion that if the prime goal was the confusion of the consumer, a more perfect set-up could not have been provided. She cited the following; BUTTER is sold in 1st, 2nd and 3rd Grades. But nowhere is there any specification as to what these grades mean, Is the water content higher in one than in the others? Is one fresher or has it more butterfat? The poor consumer cannot tell and nothing on the label gives her a clue, POULTRY is bought by Grade A, B and C.What is the difference and what does Milk Fed mean? The poultry man knows of course but does the Consumer?TINNED FRUITS AND VEGETABLES have markings which are fairly well known by now , ., Fancy, Choice, Standard and Sub-Standard.Even here too many women still wonder which is top quality, Fancy or Choice ?FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES again have a little world of markings all their own.In vegetables we have “Canada Number One,” “Canada Number Two” and “Canada Number Three”; ‘“Canada Number One Large” and on through medium and small. Now which is the best and Three Grades.Just to complicate this situation a little it is also possible to have a marking called “Combination Fancy and C” .‘Fancy and C” .and Domestic, What do these grades really mean? Are they based on size of the fruit, quality, ripeness or just what?MEAT.Beef is called “Red Brand”, “Blue Brand”, “Commer cial” or “Cutter.PORK is mare keted under special brand names but nothing is known as to which is Number One or Number Two.Then to muddle the homemaker packaging foods. So many differ-% a little more thoroughly, we have the increased tendency to put up foods in packages of odd weights and sizes. For instance, soup in 10 and 28 ounce tins; tinned milk in 5% and 15 fluid ounce tins; fruit juices in 6, 20 and 48 ounces; ketchup in 11 fluid ounce bottles; spices are packaged in weights of %, Ya, 1%, 1 and %, 15, 1%, 2 and 213 ounces.Tinned Puddings come in 815 ounces, biscuit flour in 40 ounce packages, ple crust in 18 ounces, tinned poultry and meats in 15, 15% and 32 ounces, 2 pounds and 2 ounces, 15, 1, 2 and 3 pounds. On behalf of the Consumer, Mrs.sizes and preferably in quarter, half and one pound tins and packages, or multiples of these amounts,” She pointed out to the listening food processors, the amount of mental arithmetic involved in family shopping: where the housewife tries to figure out how much will be required to feed five people or whether the larger size is a more economical buy.Well we have found out that Mrs.Consumer is liable to be suspicious of these odd amounts and weights She has to buy them but she resents them just as much as she resents the 10 ounce packet of washed spinach, the 14 ounce tube of tomatoes, and the 7 ounce salad package. Why not half.or one pound packages she says. She was brought up to buy goods in an economy where the pound and Half pound are standard weights. If you have noted this trend to odd weights when you shop and if you do not like it, the Canadian Association of Consumers is championing your point of view.C.A.C.Play Scheduled For Members Day At Westmount Club The Drama Group of the West- mount Women's Club is taking part in the
