The Westmount Recreation Depärt- ment has obtained a pamphlet entitled ‘‘Recreation — A Problem of Grass Roots — The Why, The What and The How of Public Recreation.” This pamphlet is published by the National Recreation Association, Beginning with this week's issue of the ‘Examiner’, it is the Intention of the Recreaton Department to publish excerpts from this pamphlet, and it is hoped that it will prove of interest to the citizens in the community. Why Is Recreation A Problem? On the one hand baffling obstacles, and of the other, enlarging opportunities lie before a majority of Americans in their search for satisfying recreation. To a small number of American adults and their children there is no personal recreation problem or there need no such problem. They have ample means and ample free time for the things they want to do.For them, the pleasant vistas of leisure reveal spacious lovely homes, private swimming pools, automobiles, airplanes, the theatre, concerts, country clubs, town clubs, yachting, winter vacations or summer vacations in the United States and foreign countries. If they are engaged in a business or profession, it is in itself challenging and interesting. But this is not the recreational outlook of the ordinary American. His income is low and it permits little margin for the recreational activities that must be bought. His home or apartment is small and crowded. The theatre, concerts, the country club and foreign travel are beyond his financial reach.Millions of his children in the cities do not have access to playgrounds. The ‘old swimming hole” or the river where their fathers and grandfathers swam is polluted, and t'{:y cannot afford to pay fifty cents admission to a commercial swimming pool or for a locker at the beach. They find that most of the shore line of‘lakes and the ocean front are in private ownership. The simple good times of many rural communities have vanished, As for work, much of it in these times is mechanized and unsti- mulating. The jobs of many are made up of routine, repetitive, monotonous, simple movements.Men and women tend machines or they stand behind counters and sell gadgets.Such work does not stir the imagination or permit the personal growth of which most people are capable. This rather dismal picture is relieved, of course, by several circumstances. If labor is dull and uninteresting, the hours are mercifully much shorter than was the work time of grandfather and great-grandfather.Today the week, are in vogue.Organized labor advocates a thirty hour week. Thus grows leisure. Thus have come surpluses of time and energy for the practice of the good life. And it is true that certain leisure assets are available to most American families.Millions have managed to buy automobiles and radios. And motion pictures are available to all except the extremely poor and the isolated dwellers.Commercially promoted amusement is the most conspicuous leisure time diet of the public. At its best such entertainment is a worthy use of spare time, but much of it makes for passivity and not for personal effort and personal growth. If passive, it fails to provide the mental, physical and moral discipline and the enduring satisfaction that comes through participation in hobbies, sports, music, drama, crafts, camping, social recreation and many other forms of participant leisure experience. Then, too, much commercial amusement has failed to keep free from low moral standards, as the history of horse racing, prize flights, dance halls, pool rooms, amusement parks, motion pictures, and radio records, Legal restraint and periodic public crusades have been necessary to maintain minimum standards, Because of their expense worthy types of commercial recreation are beyond the reach of the people who need them most.Essentially, recreation should not bs commercialized.= .work_of numerous societies s eight hour day, and the five day | it “most Each year in the glorious spring season The Feast of Passover comes and recalls for us the dramatic story of Israel's liberation from Egyptian slavery.“Let My people go that they may serve Me,” was the demand Moses made before Pharoah.It- constitutes the source of every cry of all the dispossessed and the oppressed throughout history.Freedom as indicated in the declaration of Moses before Phar- oah is not merely to be released from bondage.Primarily it has to do with' accepting the responsibility to serve God and through service of God that of serving fellowman.Liberty in truth entails responsibility. When liber- ®y is without responsibility it degenerates into libertinism.Only a freedom that entails the service of God, where we accept responsibility is what Passover demands of us.The hope and happiness of individuals and nations rest upon that freedom which seeks to serve not self but fellowman.Indeed the Jewish people did not become free actually, when they crossed the Red Sea.In truth, they really were on freedoni’s road, when at Sinai they accepted the Ten Commandments- We in this blessed land of Canada enjoy political freedom. But with political freedom, urgently need spiritual freedom, the kind of freedom that is tied up with the story of Sinai.Where shall spiritual freedom he found?(a) In an age of “money culture” and the worship of things, let Passover with its lesson of spiritual freedom awaken within us through truth, that the greatest things in life are the things we cannol see—love, goodness, justice and peace.Let us ‘espouse these values by which we are spiritually free.(b) Passover speaks also of the faith in the eternal springtime of human nature. On this Feast, we are reminded that we can rise above the lower impulses of life, the irrational and the frightening found in cvery human heart and become masters of our souls.(c) Spiritual freedom, means that we are to be not spectators upon life, but sharers in life.In the Haggadah ritual, one of the four sons is designated “the wicked one,” because he excludes himself in his questioning—“what are these statutes to you?" They who are truly spiritually free ever choose to identify themselves personally and share the burdens and struggles with humankind.Life is ever a relationship to others, a concern for others. Thus on Passover, 1952, we af the Household of Israel surely identify ourselves with the colored folk, who in the Union of South Africa are restricted in their democratic right of franchise.Indeed from the point of view of great religion, racism in any form is immoral and negates the doctrine of loist irr our Synagogue Choir.Mrs.Alton Goldbloom, Honorary Chairman, presided and a brief summary of the Institute's activities during the current season was given by Mrs.Alex Shulman, Chairman of the Advisory Committee.Greetings were extended by Rabbi Wilfred Shuchat and by Mr.Samuel.J, Leibowitz, the Educational Director.on behalf of the Faculty.Mrs.H.C.Lightstone expressed the appreciation of those present to the guest artist and to Mr.Jacob Rosemarin, Director of the Synagogue Choir, who provided the musical accompaniment. The Advanced Hebrew Class under the leadership of Mr.I.Lieff will continue its Wednesday morning meetings several more weeks, Library News Interesting displays were arranged for Purim and Passover. The colourful exhibits included artistic ceremonial objects and new publications for these holidays.Preparations are now being made for the Annual Bar Mitzvah Shelf Ceremony to take place on the (Continued on page 7) PAGE FIVE - “human brotherhood which flows OC DOS O0 >oo—— from the Fatherhood of God.On Passover 1952, we pray for the release from the chains of totalitarianism of all human beings. We pray that redemption and deliverance come to all peoples who find themselves enslaved in any form.May the day speedily come when the Universal - Passover will be ushered in and all peoples will come to worship SPACE TO RENT Suitable for repair shop, storage or warehouse, Cor.Greene & St.Catherine 600 Square Feet Rent $50 monthly Immediate occupancy Apply 4205 St.Catherine West the One God of Freedom—The Father of all mankind.AND IGNITI AUTONSEILE 4010 Sv.Coïhorino West (Corner Atwater) eEF RAL 7 ODOD DOC DOC DOC DOC TOC TO SOC SOC—U - ELECTRICAL ON REPAIRS AND SERVICE FOR ANY MAKE 1) EQUIPMENT I-DOCDOCTIIOTITSOC >0
