and the breast pocket in which he carried a Bible, given to him by his mother. The shell fragment penetrated half way through the Bible, finding 1ts way out of the side between two of the leaves. When the officer carefully separated the pages, he found every one cut and torn until he reached the middle. To his surprise the first page, which had not been cut through by the shell, was the page from which the Scripture verses on the flyleaf had been taken. The Bible verses his father had prayerfully chosen for him leaped up from the torn book. Many Decorations During Sir Arthur's eventful military career, he has received 18 decorations, among them the coveted K.C.B., being knighted by the late King George VI for his bravery and outstanding service. In the Wirst World War, he was appointed Chief of Staff to the Guards Division at the age of 26.He received the D.S.O.for personal courage.During the last war, he started !as Chief of Staff to Lord Wavell, At one time, for only 1800 casual- Lies, his command took 142,000 prisoners. It is little realised how much this campaign diverted the enemy and prevented them winning the war before the British forces were ready.Later he was Commander-in-Chief, London, at the time of the “blitz”, later still in Iraq. Finally he was the last Oommander-in-Chief, India. When the riots of India were at their height in August 1947, Sir Arthur is reported to have been seen in a huge refugee camp in Delhi digging pits to bury refuse. The Indians were too frightened to emerge from their homes, but the man holding the second highest military post in India was willing to help.Sir* Arthur continuing interest in Christian work is evidenced by the number of responsible positions he holds with various organizations. He is British president of the African Inland Mission. He formed the Church Society in London in 1959 for the purpose of maintaining the spiritual standards of his own denomination, and cultivation friendly relations with other Protestant groups. He is president of the Crusaders’ Union, which is a federatinn of Bible Classes for boys with a membership of many thousands, (Continued on page 2) Noted
