and author who will address a meeting of the local Progressive-Conservatrice Association on Wednesday at 8.15 in the Westmount Junior High School.Value of rehabilitation to the community was discussed Wednesday by Dr.Gustave Gingras, medical director of the Rehabilitation Society for Cripples at the weekly luncheon meeting of the Rotary Club of Westmount. He said that one of the main problems in dealing with cripples was the difficulty of recognizing disability — when and where did it start? The magnitude of the problem was shown by a rough estimate of 19 per cent — 2 million people, with some type of disability. There is a considerable cost in carrying these people in welfare work, he stated, even on bare maintainance.Studies show that to build and operate 100 beds and 300 out-beds, would cost $3 million for five years, he said. But rehabilitating these people would be worth it because of -the dual purpose it served — they not only ceased to be wards, but became wage earners. One of the problems most frequently met was overprotection.he said.Studied quite thoroughly now, it is a product of civilization. One does not find it in the jungles or retarded countries. This can take many forms, and only complete education* is the answer, he said.Dr.Gingras traced the growth of the Rehabilitation Society, for Cripples since the time it began four years ago in a small locale Rehabilifation Good Investment Dr.Gus Gingras Tells Rotarians at the Viger Hotel. At that time, some $18,000 was spent and 98 patients treated. Now the staff ‘has greatly increased, there are several specialized departments, and 700 patients have been treated to date this year.In addition, the society has been approved as a training ground. They have even initiated long term plans to train their own new staff. He said that one of the most important developments is the teamwork that has grown at the Society, Work done in the clinic has brought it forward so that it is working as a unit, and everyone realizes that rehabilitation is a job that cannot be taken on alone.J.J.Kingan Speaks To NOMA Members J.J.Kingan general manager of the Canadian Marconi Co., will be Douglas Abbott has told reporters that convertibility of currency is ‘very much” closer. In fact, he said, the world is closer to it today than at any time since the Second World |Steinberg’s Move Across The Road A new Steinberg's store will be erected across the street from the present market on Sherbrooke West at Victoria. This store will be unique in that it will have two entrances. There will be seven cash boxes at the Sherbrooke side and three at the Victoria entrance with checking stands at both. The selling area will be 13,500 feet with a modern freight elevator and endless conveyor belts to handle supplies. It will have 1150 feet of counters, about half as much again as the present store, The front on Sherbrooke St.over the show-windows will be a massive decorative brick panel enclosed in a granite frame and supported by two stone pallisters, caped with flower boxes.Lighting will be recessed and semi-indirect, which will remove the glaring whiteness of the streamline fluorescent lamps, ‘ The staff Pest-room and lockers with other facilities will be on the mezzanine floor. The mechanical equipment will also be located on this floor.Parking facilities are being enlarged for the convenience of customers. This new market, with its many modern features and color scheme, will provide the finest shopping facilities in keeping with Westmount traditions, it is reported.*War.Government curbs, in Britain and other sterling area countries, preventing the free exchange of sterling and dollar currencies, have been one of the major postwar barriers to expansion of world trade.Mr.Abbott, returning from a world circling air trip, said he could not predict just when the sterling area bloc will lift its curbs. But from what he had seen at the Commonwealth conference at Sydney, Australia, he was “quite optimistic.” Britain and other Commonwealth countries had increased their trade earnings. And they had made progress in building up their vital reserves of dollars and gold. These developments showed the “wisdom” of Canada's Common- weallh partners in resisting temptations to place a ‘picket fence” around their trading areas. One reason why Canada attend- | ed the various conferences was that it was of ‘vital interest” to get her partners away from restrictive trading practices and into the “collective” trading field.Camping Group Offers Course The Quebec Camping Association is offering a course to anyone interested in leadership at summer camps, beginning Feb.15.The course the Charlie Foon Lee Laundry, 364 Victoria avenue. He not only spotted the blaze and turned in an alarm, but assisted two young Chinamen to escape from the inferno. The fire began in the rear of the laundry, and quickly spread to another downstairs store and a house upstairs, all owned by D.J.Finlayson, 366 Victoria avenue.Under direction of Chief W.A.Cobb and Captain B.G, Durocher, the fire was quickly brought under control, despite an explosion which spread the flames throughout the area and gutted the two stores.Sgt.Lauzon said he was on his way home, waiting for a street car about 2 a.m., when he thought he saw smoke coming from the laundry. He was unable to see it too clearly because of a blizzard, raging at its worst then, A passing taxi driver confirmed his suspicion, however, and he tried to kick down the outside door.Failing in this, he notified the.police and fire departments from a nearby garage.Returning _to the laundry, he managed to open the door and (Continued on Page 7)
