By Rev.Canon R.Kenneth Naylor i.Memorial Church) The whole Christian Church has observed its great festival of the Resurrection of the: Lord Jesus Christ, with the elaborate ceremonial of the Orthodox and Roman rites, the quieter ritual of the An- “glican, and the varying ceremo- pies, elaborate or simple, of the other Christian Communions. They have all had one purpose, and they all represent a common point of view.to do honour to Him who was declared to be Son ef God with power by the resurrection from the dead.It can be described both as the foundation and the high point of our c¢dmmon Faith, I do not need to advise the fact, and I do not hope to conceal it from ches do not agree wtih one another ches donot agree with one another on all points of Faith. Some would almost ignore the clause in the Creed “I beleive in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Chuich;” another would pay equally little attention to the clause “I beleive in the Resurrection of the dead; ‘‘others would add “I beleive in the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin “ Mary.” But all would hold to the centrality of our belief in God the Father.God the Son and God the Holy Ghost.Cun we put it in another way?Buck of this world of space and time there is a Power who has created and controls the universe, a power.or rather a Being, who has revealed Himself io us in the past in the worcs of His prophets; who completed the revelation in the Person of His, Son, and who is still with us in the Person of the Holy Spirit. In the light of that Revelation we interpret the uni-| verse, or in other words, we have a religious point of view regarding the world we live in: or to change the words again, we have a reh- gious philosophy of life. But that religious philosophy is not confined to Christians. The Jews also have such a philosophy.Rabbi Stern reminded me a couple of weeks ago that this year the great Jewish festival of the Passover and the great Christian festival of Easter coincide. Is there a parable here?Is it” a reminder that in ‘one great fact ChPistian and Jew see eye to eye, that is, in the religious interpretation of the universe? It is a point which brings Jew and Christian very close together in contrast with most of the rest of the world. For the great struggle today is not between the materialist and the spiritualist or the naturalist and the supernaturalist views of the universe. It is a much more serious thing than the struggle between is why such an organization as the fellowship of Roman Catho- ‘lies, Protestants and Jews is so important. As far as our country is concerned it takes in most of those who hold a spiritual interpretation of the uniyerse, or a religious philosiphy of life.If the terms can be delined so as to include the Orthodox members of our community, it would be still better. There is room for such a group who can see the whole of life from a religious point of view, even though they do not entirely agree among themselves.CHRISTIAN SCIENCE First Church of Christ, Scientist, Westmount Y.M.C.A.Building.4585 Sherbrooke St, Westmount Sunday Service 11:00 a.m.Sunday School 11:00 a.m.Subject of Lesson Sermon: “PROBATION AFTER DEATH” Golden texl: Psalms 26:2, Examine mes ) Lord, and prove me;- try my reins and my heart, IF ednesday 8:15 po, Testimony Meeting.BAPTIST “WESTMOUNT BAPTIST | CHURCH Sherbrooke St.W.and Roslyn Ave, John Alexander Johnston, D.D., Minister Mr, Hibbert Troop, Organist and Choirmaster POST- EASTER SERVICES .“THE TRAVELLING COM- 31:00 a.m, PANION.” No One need ever Walk Alone, 31:00 n.m.SUNDAY SCHOOL, W.S.Weaver, Ph.D, — Superintendent.BRING YOUR CIIILDREN 7:30 p.m, ‘THE COMPLETE RE STORATION.* No failure Need ever Despuir.Lovely Choral Music by Westmount Choir.Dr.Johnston at both Services VISITORS MOST "CORDIALLY WEL( JOMER Mid-Week Fellowship — Wednesday 8:00 p am, Young People’s Puton — Wednesday, 8:00 p.m.SYNAGOGUES ” CONGREGATION SHAAR HASHOMAYIM 450 Kensington Avenue, Westmount, Que.* - Strangely enough, Fort Worth has as its motto “Where The West Begins”—but I haven't seen a single horse here in over a week .The West actually does begin close by, however. Its here that the watershed starts to slant’down to the Pacific Coast .Despite its profusion of wealthy oil and cattle men, this part of the country rarely gets to see a Broadway show (unless those citizens who have ’em hop aboard their private planes and fly to New York).Touring road companies find costs of “transportation too high to essay the trip to Dallas or Fort Worth.Accordingly most of the entertainment -here- abouts, from opera to straight drama, is home grown and many entertainers who got their start locally have gone on to Broadway fame.Mary Martin, for instance.Newest gadget on the local counters is a foam (Continued on page 9) ACTION AT AN ARMY TRAINING CAMP.Richard Widmark has the role of a dyed-in- the-wool top army sergeant in the action- ‘Take The High Ground,” to play at the Monkland United Theatre starting Saturday afternoon.scheduled —_— % At The Monkiand Drama Of Army Training Camp Starring Richard Widmork ® “Take the High Ground!” an - M-G-M drama filmed in Ansco Color, with a cast headed by Richard Widmark, Karl Malden, Elaine Stewart, Carleton Carpenter and Russ Tamblyn, will be shown Saturday at the Monkland Theatre for 4 days. This picture tells the hard- hitting story of what it takes to become a U.S.infantryman, Its naraiive centers on a varied assortment of typical American boys from all parts of the country, and depicts their sixteen weeks of training under a tough, one-track-mind sergeant who moulds them into the deadliest fighting machine on earth. It is also the story of a lonely and frustrated girl who finally penetrates the hard shell of the crusty sergeant.Richard Widmark, who hit.Hollywood stardom via tough guy roles, has a made-to-order part as the driving and dynamic professional soldier who takes charge of the gawky recruits.laine Stewart, M-G‘M’s zooming young newcomer, plays the girl who brings out the human- side of him.Malden enacts Wid- mark's co-instructor, with Carl- eton Carpenter and Russ Tam- blyn seen as two of the raw recruits who start out by hating their sergeant’s guts but end up .in respecting him. Also featured in a large supporting cast are Jerome Court- land, Steve Warfield, William Hairston, Maurice Jara and Bert Freed.“Take the High Ground!” was “directed by Richard Brooks and was produced hy Dore Schary, who produced the successful “Battleground” and “Go For- Broke!” Its story and screen play were written by Millard Kaufman.Jocelyn Brando to handle lead opposite Randolph Scott: in “Violent Men.” The Westmount Examiner Amusement Section À Friday, April 23, 1954 k Page 8 * A Stick British Comedy oo » “Lo ve Lottery” In Technicolor .At.The Avenue Theatre Tomorrow -": 5 “The Love Lottery,” a slick” polished British.comedy with; one of the most unusual -story angles ever screened, is slated to Open on.Friday at the Avenue Theatre.Co-starred in this delicious Tech- > .Hollywood and the Italian lakes.nicolor satire are David Niven and Peggy Cummins with Anne Vernon and’ Herbert - -Lom also co-starred, * : The story of “The Love Lottery”, a laugh-a-minute winner, concerns a film fan who wins a Hollywood star in a lottery.David Niven is seen as the Hollywood star; Peggy Cumming as the film fan; Anne Véinon as the third member of an out of the ordinary triangle; and Herbert Lom as the ‘@rganizer of a world-wide ‘gambling syn- .dicate.This is one of thie most - sparkling comiédies ever to come - from a.British studio with splendid settings which include David Niven is seen as the Hol-", lywood star who rebels against being a cog in the mighty movie machine and, as a joke, offers himself as first prize in a love lottery.- — kh — Hoffman Will Script "Chicago Uncensored” -Joseph Hoffman has been signed by -producer Sam Katzman at Columbia to write an original gangster yarn, “Chicago Uncensored,” which is slated to go.before the cameras in late November.MONKLAND) DE.9711 Monkland at Girouard M-G-M's MUSICAL SHO x “wn JOHNSON - x BIGGEST 4 Singing Romance Filmed in Florida's Cypress Gardens Wonderland for Lovers!
