Still, what we know, is much the better The lesson taught, of work’s true dignity.Dorothy Sproule.The Kingdom of God Hl By Rev.Canon R.Kenneth Naylor, Rector of Trinity Memorial Church Let us consider what Our Lord teaches us in the Parable of the Kingdom.We shall not analyse each parable but outline the general teaching and illustrate rom the parables.We shall try to answer the question: What is the Kingdom og God like?Notice, the question is not: What is the Kingdom of God?Our Lord never answered that question, for the very simple reason that the Kingdom of God is infinite and cannot be defined.He only says that it is like this and that.He says the Kingdom of God is like some material thing, or like a person; or He tells a story and then says, now the Kingdom of God is like that.So we shall pick characteristics of the Kingdom without any suggestion that we have told the whole story; or that we have completed the description of the Kingdom of God, for that would be an impossibi- Jity.To begin with the Kingdom is a living thing.It is compared with the sowing and growing of seed.The field is the world, the seed is the Word of God, and yet the two together are in some sense the Kingdom of God.The seed is sown in the field, and the great part of the field respond and received the seed, But not all receives it effectively; for in some parts of the field there is no depth ~f soil, in other parts the seed is choked by weeds, but where the soil is prepared and ready to receive it the Kingdom is effective and bears fruit unto etevnal life.Another parable indicates that the kingdom has an independence of human activity.It is compared to the seed that is sown by man but grows of itself.The farmer sows his seed, but he does not make it grow.So the Word of God is sown but from thereon can do things which surprise even the sower.So Isaac Stringer sowed the Word on Herschel Island in the Arctic.Nothing seemed to happen {or time, then suddenly the seed came to life and the Eskimos of Herschel Island were Christians, or to use another parable, the leaven had worked :n the mass of dough till the whole was leavened.Isaac Stringer woudl have been the first to may that the work was of Gud.Yet, whe it has life in itself, the seed, or the soil and the seed wnich together are lke the Kingdom of God, can be hindered.For the Kingdom is like a man + certains who sowed good seed in his field.And when no one was watching an enemy came and sowed tares, weeds so like the wheat that it was hard to distinguish them.The harm was discovered and the servants were deeply distressed.Presumably they were the same servants through whom the seed was sown, and who should have watched against the enemy.Probably a good many of the Lord's servants would have to plead guilty to that lack of watehfulness.But even so the harm was not fatal to the Kingdom.It was harmed and damaged but was not destroyed.In fact, the Kingdom ultimately cannot be destroyed, for it is God's Kingdom; and it is God's will that it should prosper in that whereto He has sent it.¥ - * | Christian Science x — + Man's real spiritual status as a son of God, not subject to sin and disease, will be emphasized at Christian Science church services on Sunday in the Lesson- Sermon entitled “Man.” From the King James Version of the Bible will be read the account of Christ Jesus’ healing of the man “whose right hand was withered” which concludes (Luke 6:10): “And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand.And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.” From “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy the following selection will be among those read: “The understanding of his spiritual individuality makes man more real,’ more formidable truth, and enables him to conquer sin, disease, and death.” The Golden Text is from Romans: “As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” MECHANIUS INSTITUTE The MecHames* Institute Li- “brary, 1200 Atwater avenue, will resume regular hours Tuesday, as follows: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.to 9 p.m.; it may never come about during his tenure here, for that matter.‘This ambition is to promote football in Quebec, so that eventually every youngster has the opportunity of playing the sport sometime in his youth.For eight years at McGill, Locals To Show .(Continued from page 14) Verdun Auditorium Park at 2 p.m.The park is at the bottom of Church avenue and La- Salle boulevard, right next to the Verdun Auditorium, Tickets are available at the door.Some 10 westenders are currently trying out for positions with the junior Sham-Cats, following the demise of the NDG Maple Leafs.The juniors start - Obeck conducted clinics, made dinner speeches and constantly tried to “sell” his product to the public.Now he feels some of that work is starting to produce results, as the "Als found from a visit to Quebec City.“It is the only sport that can be completely Canadian,” Obeck says.“It is played ‘completely in Canadian cities, and the large majority of the members of each team are Canadian.No other top flight sport can make that claim.” It is with this in ‘thind that Obeck says he would like the Alouettes “to represent all of Quebec, similar to the Saskatchewan and British Columbia football teams.” -Vic finds that trying to promote the Montreal football club and the sport in general are jobs that fall hand in hand, and is one that he te enjoying extremely.“When the new owners took over the ¢lub we agreed that part of our job was not only to give Montreal first class football, but also to promote it throughout the province.And I sincerely feel we are accomplishing part of our objective,” he said.A devout family man, Obeck has three children.They are Sharon, 10, Steve, 7, and Mary, 4.Steve goes to the Priory School and Sharon to Sacred Heart.His outside activities right now are mainly concerned with television, a medium Vic has used more and more in recent Years.His own sports program was the first Montreal show to go on a coast to coast hookup and to devote more time to it, he has dropped a Sunday afternoon radio broadcast this year.In comparing his post at Mc- Gill with his present duties, Obeck finds he has “more latitude.I'm my own boss, and it's a lot different being in business for yourself, so to speak.In a lot of ways it is easier — if you need a left end, you can simply go out and buy one.That's as far as players are concerned.“Also, because ‘it's strictly football, I like it better, and.it does give me more time for outside commitments.“As far as management problems are concerned, I find them easy to handle, I've been in every angle of the business, as player, coach and executive.All that helps me now in solving the everyday problems that crop up,” he sald.Vic has only praise for the westend, and stated: “We really enjoy living here — it's an ideal location.The bulk of the team's fans are out here, as are the majority of (the season ticket holders.That's why we find it so successful practicing at the Westmount Athletic Grounds.And to cap it all, several of the players live here too.” their schedule around Sept.10.C.J.Pratt, Lt-Col., JOIN THE.ROYAL MONTREAL © REGIMENT REGIMENTAL PARADES _ will commence TUESDAY, 6th of SEPTEMBER, at 8 p.m.Candidates for training in Infantry Tactics, Weapons, Wireless, Driving, etc.accepted on Tuesday and Thursday each week from ‘8:00 to 9:30 P.M.4625 St.Catherine St.West Westmount Officer Commanding Brewing Discovery LSI yes BC res f ‘de Liesse road, and from here + their annual tour in Canada, ana ‘Saturday night.PAGE IXT A fx TREY ip cn CEE EE robes cage CU Over 60 Archers Vie For Provincial res The Quebec Archery Association’s big event of the year takes place this weekend when some sixty archers from all over the Province gather in Montreal for the Quebec Provincial Archery Championships.Last year these were held in Arvida, and on Saturday and Supday reigning champions Cora Bachelder of the Algonquin Archers, Montreal, and Fred Hicks of Sherbrooke Belle- view will be defending their titles.the Centre Sportif, one block [Society Lists _ ;
