on event, and yet in some strange way Jesus Himself kept the direction of those events in His own hand.He had seemed to surrender to the plots of His enemies but all the time He was directing an infinitely deeper plan, staking steps to gather together not only the lost sheep of the House of Israel, but also all the people of God in all nations who would come to Him; for He knew that by self-sacrifice and not by self-assertion He would draw all men to Himself. But all had to be done according to God's will, and according to the needs of His people. So Jesus gathered His disciples on the Thursday evening; gave them a teaching which was to survive all disaster and a ceremony which was to be ‘continued throughout all time.It was to be not only a ceremony — the break of the bread and the outpouring of the wine — it was also to be a sacrament, an outward and effective sign by which those who believe in Him should share His very life. That done, He could let His enemies have their way, and apparently destroy Him.But again things were not what they seemed; their victory turned to utter defeat. The thief crucified with Him accepted salvation from Him; even the officer in charge of the Crucifixion confessed: “Truly this was Son of God!” as He surrendered that precious Life into the hands of His Heavenly Father. He continued to the end to be master of the situation. He could rest on the Sabbath Day knowing that His work was done.He had accomplished the task for which He had come into the world. Then followed the event which we generaly consider supernatural or miraculous. But there are certain events which must follow certain other events if the very nature of things is to be preserved. As St.Peter said afterwards, “It was not possible that He should be holden of death.” If God is the very meaning of righteousness He must vindicate that righteousness by raising His Son from the dead.As St.Paul puts it: “Jesus was SYNAGOGUE
