[" I Policedeparimentgets radar speed check sef A new phase in the development of the City’s efforts to control imprudent driving and make the streets safer for pedestrian -and motorist alike was embarked on by Council, Monday night, when it was decided to purchase a complete radar traffic control unit.1 The equipment will be similar ¥———— to that which has been in operation in Toronto since 1956 and an officer from Westmount Police Department has just returned from making a complete study of the methods used in the radar gection of the Toronto Metropolitan Police Department. His report reveals that Toronto now has 16 radar speed checking sets in operation, 13 hours a day, 7 days a week, and although a declining accident rate there since 1956 cannot be entirely attributed to the use of radar, it is believed the equipment has helped ease the number of accidents. The equipment can be operated from a motor vehicle or by one man on foot and is mobile enough to he set up in practically any location on the City streets. As was the practice in Toronto, warning will be given to the public before operation begins.Explanations can also be given to offenders at the time a speeding ticket is issued and they can be shown the recorded evidence of their infraction.CAR STRIKES BOY ON WESTERN AVE.A 7 year-old boy was taken by police car to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after he had been knocked down in a street accident near his Victoria avenue home, Monday. The driver of the’ car, Leon Pronovost, 47, 81 Phillippe street, St.Vincent de Paul, told police that as he was proceeding along Western avenue the boy, Murray Millett, 316 Victoria avenue ran onto the street and though he was driving slowly was unable to stop in time from hitting the boy.The boy told police he was on his way home but saw some friends having a scrap and ran back to join in.Young Millett received back injuries and was detained in hospital as a precautionary measure for X-ray examination. He was later released. An Editorial : How do you remember?REMEMBRANCE takes many forms. It depends upon who remembers. Some even would prefer to forget.Tuesday Canada, as it has for 40 years, will pause in its ever lengthening strides to mark that Armistice Day of Nov.11, 1918, which ended the First World War — an armistice all too short- lived, which led on to a second global conflict, to Korea, to lesser crises of arms, to the uncertainties of cold war and the atomic age.We now call Nov.11 Remembrance Day.It will endure as such.It embraces so many more unhappy memories garnered since 1914-18.* * + To the grizzled veterans of that First debacle, their ranks now thinning ever faster with the marching years, Tuesday's remembrance probably is most significant. These men knew war in its filthiest, most miserable form of modern times. They can: never forget. Those widowed by Korea, on the other hand, will have the most vivid memories.Life goes on | for them with all too fresh recollections of loved ones lost in our nations first real armed encounter with communism, which may not be our last. And there are the parents and the children of that generation which went into the battles on land, sea and air from 1939 to 1945 whose memories are far from dulled by the nearly two decades which have passed since the start of the Second World War.Those parents must ponder what those sons, -who now would have been in the prime of life, would be today. Those children, born into the world of Hitler, Mussolini and Tojo but too young to know it, are youths and young adults now who can appreciate that the fathers taken from them then sacrificed not only their own lives but an essential and Joyful part of their growing children’s very existence, An aching void is the remembrance here, + * + In this city and this country remembrance will take many forms. For some, it even will be a shrugged “So what!” We may be on the threshold of some new and terrible form of war for which there will be no remembrance, It may serve us well to remember, this Remembrance Day, war’s sorrows as deeply as we can.It VOL.XXIX, No.45 fingerprinting were explained to members of the Verdun Lions Club Tuesday evening at their regular bi-monthly meeting held in the Legion Hall. The speaker, an ex- periencad criminologist, was Sgt.Detective William Wylie of the Westmount Police Department who has spent many years in the study and application of fingerprinting in the detection of crime and.the apprehending of criminals.President Terry Ashford introduced the speaker to the gathering veviewinz his enviable | record in police circles.Fingarnrints, said the speaker never change from birth to death and for a long time after. He explained tnat the discovery of their unique characteristics was first made by the Chinese and later developed by scientific observers in and Great Britain.France Sgt.Detective Wylie further enlightened his listeners with informative charts which showed the prints enlarged to enormous proportions. He also had the members examine tell-tale fingerprints with microscopes which they had made by simply ricking up a glass.Full credit to the RCMP was given as having one of the finest collection of fingerprints in- the world, and within the matter of a few minutes could identify any person if their prints were on file.Fingerprinting, he said, was one of the safest means of positive identification and today may help us to find a way to prevent the next.1 —J.W.S.were also It occurred to me thal a comparison of the approach used by Hampstead and West- mount concerning the same problem would provide scope for an editorial now or at a later date. The cost factor.the fact that the Westmount Municipal Association declined to conven a general meeting.and the alderman of West.mount, declined a request for a public referendum all sums up a rather different aproach. The heading for the editorial would naturally be “A Tale of Two Cities.” This is just an idea in support of your excellent editorial work in conection with Westmount problems.John E.Donovan.SAY Conscience has no more to do with gallantry thon it has with politics.R.B.Sheridan Examiner Profile CD fraining chief we By CYNTHIA JONES A man who was once buried alive in ‘debris for 96 hours during World War H on his own bomb-torn.Malta is the chief of operations and training in Montreal's new civil defence set-up announced last week.Major Henry Calleja (pronounced Calava) is a 35-year - old exuberant Maltese, a British subject of Spanish origin, with an adventurous background in war, whose black eyes glisten when he envisages a disaster of any kind hitting Montreal and posi- fireman available and our specially - trained wardens would be assigned to their individual tasks.” Major Calleja, who graduated with distinction from the Civil Defence College at Arnprior which he attended in 1954 along with his wife who specialized in emergency feeding, said his job is to be prepared for gas, nuclear, biological, chemical and radiological warfare.“I cannot afford to speculate what the enemy might do,” he said.“My duty is to bave plans ready for the co-ordinator so that he is able to meet every kind of disaster that might occur in the city from a bucket of rain to a hydrogen bomb.If it should happen in the teeth of a hurricane that he gets word of an attack we must be Major Henry Calleja tively gleam when he contemplates a wholesale evacuation of the island’s population by a fleet on the mighty St.Lawrence.“My new job is a full-time one and I have resigned from La Patrie's advertising department,” said Major Calleja during an interview in his apartment on Decelles avenue.“As chief of operations I must implement the policy as dictated by the co-ordina- tor Major Maurice St.Pierre, the xing pin, and my task is a technicai and tactical one associated with any type of disaster — gas explosion, any large hurricane or fire. For instance if a plane landed on a department store at noon during the Christmas season it woula leave a hell of a hole Lut not wreck it.“If it knocked out the elevators it would involve 5,000 people inside the store and 2,000 people on St.Catherine street. Many people would suffer from broken glass and from shock. This disaster woutd he a civil defence operation. We would commandeer every vehicle at hand, every policeman and every ready to move in face of that hurricane.” With Mrs.R.L.Pineo, the new planning officer, Major Calleja is now work.ng out of the temporary civil defence headquarters on Botrel avenue in Notre Dame de Grace just above the police station.“I believe we are the youngest team in the country,” said Major Calleja.“It's a young man's job because you need staying power and a dedicated spirit.’ (There is no doubt whatever about the major's zeal and earnestness for his formidable task) Major Calleja envisages a civil defence army of 150,000 volunteers in the city. The training of leaders probably will begin soon and includes a first-aid course and a course at Arnprior in any of the following classifications: heavy and light rescue, wardens, auxiliary police, auxiliary fire services, medical, communications, welfare (refugee registration, emergency feeding, clothing and rehahilitation) chaplains, first aid and inland water patrol.- Major Calleja thinks the latter topic — inland water ll prepared patrol — is a vital one for Montreal “Our huge river is a critical area where up 10 200,000 people could be evacuated in event of attack,” he said.“My job is to be sure to have trained leaders at the disposal of the coordinator and to become a leader one must go to Arn- prior, Civil defence can't save people, it can only lead them. Our duty is to teach them, not to die, but to survive and the public must have as much faith in us as we have confidence in them” A student of world at- fairs, a political ‘ analyst, writer and broadcaster and fighter against Communist subversion, Major Calleja came to Canada from Malta in 1951 and was later appointed chief rescue officer in the former CD set up here. His first job in Canada was news ¢commentator for CJAD and in the two years he was there he claims to have made world political predictions which have since come true. For a time he acted as assistant circulation manager for The Ensign and did a A few days ago we received a note from a girl named Virginia, And, as it has always been an old family custom (or curse) to read magazines and letters backwards, the young lady's pretty name — and Christmas a few scant weeks away — almost prompted us to emulate a famous editor of yesteryear and start off haphazardly with an answer something like: “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus .” : Restrained from such folly by Uncle Beauregard, who is prone to over-the-shoulder reading, we discovered by more exact perusal that all this damsel had on her mind was a well worded beef on the desirability of having contemporary escorts come closer to the habiliment standards set by girls on dining and dancing dates.Even to the point of putting in a strong plug for the dinner jacket’s return to regular and proper use.Without too much prodding from Uncle Beauregard, who is a sucker for a black or white tie occasion, we agree.Too, and entirely on our own hook, we’ll add thac lately we've observed girls — probably just like Virginia — dressed to resemble little dreams, out with some very sartorially sub-standard looking slobs .in smart places, as well.Which means money — or lack of it — was not the excuse, Our fairly recent perception, according to the department’s elderly and correct relative, would have had harsher reactive tones had we viewed the situation a few years ago. Then conditions were really dreary. But, Uncle Beau informed us, the trend now is definitely towards better garmented swains.Within the foreseeable future, he continued, guys Mr.Huysmans, who is a Belgian by birth and who has resided in Canada for seven years, decided to use his vast travel experience in Europe by opening an agency in Montreal. His modest start in the business a few doors away from his present location potential of the west end of the city and to learn the interests and desires of the traveling public in Canada. As always, patience, willingness to learn, and a lot of hard work, has brought success. The facilities of the new and well appointed office and the two years ago gave him an op- * portunity to explore the travel ability of Mr.Huysmans to prepare itineraries ranging from a * weekend in New York to a trip PACKING © CRATING Mares JIE SHOUD, a | lar, service, assistance and ex- \\F HE'S FROM MORGAN STORAGE AND VAN LINES HE'S AN EXPERT, PERSONALIZED Mr.J.Middleton, Sales Rep.MOVING & STORAGE | LOCAL, LONG-DISTANCE, WORLD-WIDE © SHIPPING ¢ STORING Local and Long Distance Moving Export Packing and Shipping Business Executive Transfers Storage — all kinds including Office Records MORGAN STORAGE & VAN LINES LTD.442 Sherbrooke St.W., Montreal Agents for ALLIED VAN LINES — CANADA & U.S.A” around the world will offer resi- i dents of the west end in particu- pert travel advice without cost.Travel agents derive their income from the transportation companies they represent. The valuable store of information ranging from where-to-go and what-to-see to weather conditions abroad and the world's best shopping buys could never be handled by the busy staffs of the transportation companies themselves. Therefore by appointing a well- ON STORAGE.versed and experienced travel agent to serve the public on their behalf, the transportation com | panies are doing their part in furthering better understanding , between peoples of different lands | by promoting travel.GUESTS Guests at the cocktail party which included local prominent businessmen were as follows:.— Mr.J.P.Agnieray.District Sales Mgr.and Mr.G.Gauvreau Sales Rep.AIR FRANCE; Mrs.D.Rowden, District Sales Rep.ALITALIA; Mr.C.Labelle, District Sales Mgr.and Mr.B.Mec- Dougald Sales Rep.BOAC: Mr.W.Lamonde, Sales Rep.CANADIAN PACIFIC AIRLINES; EASTERN AIRLINES; Mr.H.Schumacher.District Sales Mgr.and Mrs.O.Andrien, Sales Rep.LUFTHANSA— German Airlines Mr.H.J.Canvin, District Sales Mgr.NORTHEAST AIRLINES; Mr.R.Mayer, District Sales Mgr.SABENA — Belgian World Airlines; Mr.F.Hansen, Office Mgr.SAS—Scandinavian Airlines System; Mr.P.Stocklin, District Sales Rep.SWISSAIR.Mr.R.Myers, General Passenger Agent, CANADIAN PACIFIC STEAMSHIPS; Mr.T.Barrow, Sales Rep., Mr.E.Williams and Mr.F.Leemans of THE CUNARD STEAMSHIP CC.; Mr.R.Le Ny, Passenger Traffic Mgr.FRENCH (Continued on page 13) Av.8.7211 looking like Fred Astaire or Cary Grant should be seen popping in and out of restaurants and supper clubs all over town, garbed in the right attire to set off their lovely eompanions decorously. It's also safe to assume enthusiastic assistance from clothing manufacturers and haberdashers in their merchandising and promotional efforts will hasten the day.So right back to 1939, say we, but without the boiled shirt front, please! and also his development from fetishism to Christianity. It may even be said that trouble in some form of ‘hardship has been the cause of all the development that has taken place ytin the world, The children of Israel left the flesh pots of Egypt and faced the rigoi's of the desert, ana thereby passed from slavery to freedom. The Remnant of Judah went into captivity in Babylon and achieved the highest form of religion known at that time.In the times of their comparative prosperity there had been a steady deterioration. In the Second Century B.C.the Jews could have found a fairly easy peace, but they preferred the wilderness under the Macah- bees and maintained their religion.Jesus of Nazareth carried i his resistance to the conventional religion of His day to the Cross and achieved freedom for His people. This is not confined to the Biblical tradition. There is a great deal expressed in a saying of the great Greek tragedian.Aeschylus.He expresses it in two words which we translate: “Learning comes from suffering.” This is all contrary to our modern way of thinking.which places security before every- | thing else: financial and physi | cal security. It is also contrary to the attitude of many sincere | Christians whose response ta | suffering has been: “I do not know what I have done to deserve this.” Our Lord tried to correct that attitude 19 centuries ago. There are several things then to say about suffering: The first | is that it is a part of human ilife as we know that life. Not one of us can escape. If nothing else, there is the tragedy of our own dissolution. And yet the suffering is not all tragedy. If we will allow ourselves we are trained and developed by suffering. If life was always easy and comfortable we should grow slack in body and soul.Life was not intended to be easy.- In the second place it is not only the sufferer who is developed. It is also the onlooker who suffers with his friend — or, he may even be a stranger, But I sympathize with him; that is, I suffer with him.Sympathy is one of the most desirable | characteristics in man; it could Charles never Michael Stibbe; Melissa Suffering.Try to imagine what Gelden Text: I Corinthians 15:22.As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive, " WEDNESDAY 8:15 p.m.Testimony Meeting READING ROOM In the Jhurch Edifice Open to the public Tuesday, Thursuay and Fri- 2 to 4 pun, Wednesdays, 6.30 to have developed without life would be like without sympathy. The third thing is that sympathy must be expressed both in word and deed. All of this is prompted by the tragedy at Springhill. Our hearts have been iorn by the sufferings of men and their families, engaged in the carrying on of their everyday affairs. That seems to be why it is more dreadful than the same number of deaths on the highway on a weekend, It is a concentrated agony. But it also falls into the pattern of this series which has tried to deal with the Nature of God and His world. It is not an easy thing to say that God's world is a hard world, but it is, and it always has been, and as far as we can it always will be.On the other hand we can turn that hardness into a school of character and rise above our own tragedy, and also share in the tragedy of others. An) lastly, the fact of the Incarnation shows that God Himself shares in the tragedy in its most extreme form and turns it into salvation.Even the Captain of our salvation was made perfect through suffering.kl Le V man ( Appea canvai “vital to con Mr.volunte tic effo ing the day an ember J “The Montreg countrie fostered sent the Flaces dividual afford die” Major ciaries General Sanator Service, Baion ( Jewish art Nei Earlie Jan, ass diive, a had read A large Was ra events Septembl CV The B the Cat will hold party on ember 1 convene tc-pres Miss Ma chairman cord as — LA PERF We The Westmount Examiner, Friday, November 7, 1958 9 = ESS, > C TL} "1 .2) man of the 1958 Joint Cam Appeal and United Israel Appeal has strongly urged all canvassers to work as hard “yital humanitarian services here and abroad will be able" to continue.” Mr.Pascal volunteer canvassers in a gigan- | tic effort to raise $3,878,800 dur- | ing the drive which began Mon- : day and which will end Nov- | ember 17.| Ï | | i is heading 4,000 “The more than 26 causes in Mentreal, Israel and in other countries of the world must be fostered,” he said.“They repre- seni the tenets of Judaism which places the integrity of the individual uppermost. We cannot afford to let these principles die | Major non-sectarian beneficiaries in Montreal are Jewish General Hospital, Mount Sinai Sanatorium, Jewish Vocational Service, Herzl Health Centre, Baion de Hirsch Institute and Jewish Child Welfare Bureau, ard Neighborhood House, Earlier this week.Percy Cap- Jan, associate chairman of the diive, announced the campaign had reached the $1,000,000 mark.A large percentage of this total was raised in pre-campaign events during the months of September and October.CWL Card Party The Business Women's Unit of the Catholic Women's League will hold the annual Fall card party on Monday evening, November 17, in Victoria Hall. The convener, Mrs.T.P.James, first Vice-president, will he assisted by Miss Mary C.Brennan as co- thairman and Miss Patricia Me- cord as reception convener.Chairman o Jewish drive sefs $1,000,000 mark Westmount resident Maxwell S.Pascal, general chair- paign for Combined Jewish as they can in order that Travel bureau .(Continued from page 6) LINE; to win a senior intercollegiate football championship, at the re-union styled “Doug Kerr Day” held at Sir Arthur Currie gymnasium Saturday.A luncheon sponsored by the McGill Society of Montreal was strictly informal.Kerr and members of his family, his associates, trainer Harry Grimes, players and wives, were seated at a long table, the centre of interest. No speeches were made save brief remarks by Dave Tennant, president of the Society who presented Kerr with an engraved stein. It was in the spontaneous remarks of his players on the '38 team, and graduates and faculty members of the period, that the high esteem with which Kerr was held; his instinct for impressing a permanent mark on character.was stressed as more than 400 assembled in the gym. There was a constant buzz like “Remember the time Kerr .” or “Doug said .” or “Pop said ! to me this day .:” Later Kerr and, his players were serenaded, first by the Mc- Gill band, then by the kiited cohorts from Queen's, before the party adjourned to the Stadium for the Queen's-McGill football tussle which the Redmen won 16- 13 to make the “Day” a complete success.Sixteen feams entered in senior 'B" tourney Sixteen teams are entered in the Senior B competition of the MBL Golden Ball. They have been split into divisions of four teams each.RCAF St.Hubert, St.Lambert CSA, Unity Boys Club and Golden Knights are in one division, while Lakeshore YMCA, Holy Cross, MacDonald College and Tauras form another group. The other groups are: Yvon Coutu, Palestre Nationale, Querhes, UBC, and Northmount Y, Westmount Y, SERA and East End Boys Club.eb Rugger semi The Westmount Exeminer, Friday, November 7, 1958 1 5 layoff underway Saturday at West Hill, Westmount Westmount turned in their best display of the season when it was most needed ‘and blanked Barba- riané 11-0 last Saturday in a Quebec \\ Rugger league match pliyed at Westmount Park.In other action round the loop Wanderers assured themselves of a play-off berth by whitewashing win- less Canadair 22-0 while Mc- Gill Redmen drepped a home game te the Bytown Beavers. The irish were awarded the game against RCAF St.Hubert who were unable to field a side because of flying commitments. The :op four clubs in the standings go into the play-offs which opens Saturday with the final for the provincial championship November 15.In the crucial tilt at West- mount Park, Barbs, defending champions and league-leaders, started off with a bang and came close to scoring twice in the first five minutes.Only a desperate defence thrown up by the Westies held them at bay.Barbs used the wind advantage cleverly in the opening period with Dick Hyde many times putting them deep in Westmount territory with long touch finding boots.Westmount meant business right from the start of the sec- end stanza and the forwards who had been playing well turned on full steam and gradually wore Barbarian into the ground.A loese bounding ball which the Barbs defence allowed to roll around finally spelled disaster as speedy Geoff Jackson nipped in to gather up the ball, hand-off three would-be tacklers kicking form and booted seven points.PLAYOFF TEAMS The draw for the play-offs in to go over near tne posts for the Quebec Rugger League was Alister Wittet to convert and the Westies were out in front 5-0.Westmount came close on several other occasions but were unable to break the barrier again for a major score and it was left to big Jim Adam to put inp, e Geoff Jackson the final nails in the coffin with two long range penalty kicks for the 11-0 win, Wanderers nailed down fourth and last play-off position by easily turning back Canadair 22-0.Peter Brodie-Brown led the scoring parade with twe touchdowns with sinzle counters coming from Colin Hudson, Ray Smith and Ken Gordon.John Davis was back in good Loyola Warriors can clinch grid title with win over Bishop's in tonight's tilt Loyola Warriors will be out to speedy end John Roche for two TD’s and by carrying one over himself.A strong Warrior defense held the vaunted St.Pat's single wing offense to one touchdown and came up with crucial pass interceptions and fumble recoveries to successfully scuttle the Irish attack. The Warriors were the first to score in capitalizing on two early errors by St.Pat's.Two consecutive third down passes from center Bernie Maclsaac eluded punter Gordie Ventura. The Irish recovered the first but charging Warrior end Larry Sheehan recovered the second on the St.Pat’s five yard line. Two plays later
