Peter L.Redpath, 18, of 527 : Victoria avenue, and his companion Yvon Aubin of St.Hyacinthe, who have been missing from a survey camp at Fort Chino, Ungava Bay, for over a week. Both tlie youths, second year McGill University geology students, have been the objects of & widespread search from the air and on the ground since Tuesday, July 14, when they failed to return to the camp from a fishing trip on the treacherous Koksoak River.Mines Minister William Cot- tingham returned to Quebec City Monday after spending two days with search parties, with the grim news that “the search operations in which he had taken part had convinced him that Peter Redpath and his companion would not be found alive.” The youths were employed for the summer by the Province of Quebec Department of Mines. The only result of the search to date is the yy erturned canoe on thé, ‘ghoi ob the Kok- soak River, ‘and ‘4 rubber hoot, believed to belong to one of the students.Apparently Eskimos, who were aware of the treacherous nature of the river, had seen the boys and shouted warnings to them. They came to the Fort Chimo Camp late Tuesday, July 14, and reported having seen the boys, who seemed not to have heard their shouts.Peter Redpath, the son of the late Squadron Leader John Peterson Redpath of the.RCAF who was believed to have drowned at sea while en Canada The Canadian importer 1s our ambassador extraordinary and a trail blazer who can contribute müëh to the understanding between nations, he is the one representative of his country abroad and if he considers his reputation and what his country stands for, can perform miracles towards cementing good will around the world stated Bruno Van der Walde, 880 Roslyn avenue, business executive and past president of Canadian Importers, to members of the Verdun Rotary Club on Monday.Mr.Van der Walde stated that * in the import and export business there was no cuoice in defining them as to importance as one phase cannot exist without the other. It was a good illustration of the expression ‘which came first the chicken or the egg’ but, he said in the first place everything started with import and cited the instances of the travels of Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus in their voyages of discovery around the worid in search of goods.: In more modern times one might consider the activities of the Hudson Bay Company and the work of the Portuguese and the Spaniards in their travels to South America. It was thelr alm to lay their hands on valuable things and was not aimed at exporting goods but importing them from other countries in order to get exclusive -ossession of goods and to corner markets.Today, he continued, without imports there.cannot be exports as no country couid afford to sell and not buy in return. He quoted figures extensively on the Canadian economy stating that it was not as easy today, as in the olden days one could import anything.Today the work had reduced itself to a system of barter and the controlled trade of the Iron Curtain countries had put us at a disadvantage. So much so that it is not always up to us as |: to what we would like to do in this respect but what we have to do.Today the importer is not what he used to be, but he is a highly specialized expert in all the tariffs which are sometimes quite difficult to understand and he has to be an expert in knowing his merchandise as well as all.types of finished and unfinished products.Canada, he said will always we cannot be without and B® takes an expert with the pres per knowledge to do the wortt o import and export propoge y.| The spoaker was tendored @ vote of thanks by Ben Shara, Babs Mondies presented Da Frank McGregor and Lioyd Mo- Clintock with the customary bi-weekly trips hit 100 average If sun-tan on youngsters’ faces and arms is any indication of enjoyment then Unity members must be having a wonderful beginning to their summer break, The Monday and Friday recrcational trips to St.Helen's Island have certainly confirmed the value of creating such a resort so near to the City. The complement of our bus nears one hundred children each trip and the fact that we all return tired but happy at the end of the day pre-supposes a successful day.Recently the management of the youngsters’ wading pool decided to leave the water intake pipe on so that a fountain spray effect was available to the ‘tots’ who were taking part in the bathing. No wonder our members were very tired but very happy when they returned to the Club.GUESTS OF FRY-CADBURY Our educational tour this week made us guests of Fry- Cadbury and a ‘group of our youngsters lived for a short while in what was, literally, a sea of chocolate.Having resisted the temptation to scoop a fingeiful of hot chocolate at overy machine, and lo ignore what we considered the almost perfect ‘throwouts’ we completed the tour with a very handsome gift from the company.Unity members have asked me to say “Thank You’ to Fry- Cadbury for the way they showed us round and the way the members of the staff took, quite .obviously, a lot of trouble to make the tour so interesting.LAFONTAINE PARK AND ZOO Ir little Susan Warren had not double-exposed a snapshot of the majestic peacock with tail fanned this would have been a perfect afternoon. After a arrangements may be made.CRAFTWORK An increase in participation in crafts this summer indicates an encooraging session.Figurine modelling is the most popular at tthe moment, although much of the work done on paper sculpturing is of an exceedingingly high standard. The youngsters are showing considerable ability in the manipulation of different craft “drills” and although creation of string puppets is more prolonged than the other crafts being investigated we are anticipating some interesting puppet shows towards the end of sum- mer—with our own puppets of course.LITTLE Museum. The legacy was from the estate of Sir Vincent Meredith Bt, former president of the Bank of Montreal, who died Feb.24, 1920.Sir Vincent's will specified the bequest was to be paid on the death of Lady Meredith, She died April 12 this year. The capital itself must be maintained in the Museum's endowment fund and only its revenues are applicable to the general operation of the Museum.Mr.Wallis, in expressing appreciation for the bequest on behalf of the Council of the Mu- sewn, stressed that such donations are vital to the day-to-day operations of the Institution. He said the Museum is dang- crously short of funds for the maintenance and improvements of its buildings.Donations such as Sir Vincent's helped to reduce operating deficits, he added. He said the situation Theatre gathered at the annual meeting last week to elect a new board of directors and to hear reports on the season past and plans for the season to come.Chrystie Douglas, 467 Clarke avenue, was re-elected president at a special meeting of the new board following the general meeting. In his report to members, Mr.Douglas pointed out that in 1958- 59 MRT had produced ten plays for the first Lime in its 29-year history.Despite this increased schedule and the continuing work on necessary improvements to the Closse street building, Mr.Douglas said, MRT had managed “to reduce its liabilities by by some 23%." : Mr.Douglas commented particularly on the expansion of the MRT School of the Theatre, which had a 32% increase in student attendance last year.Plans for next year outlined in the president‘s report included a season of ten plays, with a new scheme of importing a few leading players for most productions.A number of Montrealers who have moved to Toronto and New York and gained recognition in TV as well as on the stage will be invited to appear as guest artists at MRT, Mr.Douglas explained.A plan to have both a general manager, on a full-time basis, and a member of the Board who will act as managing director was confirmed at the special Board meeting.Jean de Savoye, who is retiring as general manager, was elected managing director for the coming season.Mrs.de Savoye will supervise both the general administration and the artistic standards of each MRT production.New directors include: president, Chrystie L.Douglas; first x Liabilities are reduced in just as the disciples in the Gospel Story had misunderstood their Master's teaching. Our Lord met that misunderstanding by teaching in parables, and especially parables about the Kingdom of God.With the parable even if they did not understand the teaching they would at least remember the story and perhaps later they would gather the meaning. Our Lord spoke of the Kingdom.Paul did not often refer to that, but he did speak frequently of the Church. He did not use parables as our Lord did.Instead he used metaphors. In the parables the Master said “The Kingdom of Heaven is like something’; in the metaphor St.Paul says ‘The Church is something”.In the first letter to the Corinthians he uses three such figures of speech. In Chapter three he uses two of them in one verse “Ye are God's husbandry; God's building”, He has already addressed them as ‘The church of God which is at Corinth”, So we can say “The church is God's husbandry; the ohurch is God's building.” When Paul wrote from Ephesus there was one building that dominated the city: the temple of Artemis. The temple was one of the great buildings of Asia Minor. It was as big as a city block; supported by 128 columns, each 60 feet high. But the extraordinary thing about it was the part which was not seen.It was built in a marsh, and to secure the foundations to carry the enormous weight they laid down bales of raw wool and charcoal, the two substances that are not affected by the marsh water. On that foundation one of the greatest temples in the world was built. Here, however, St.Paul was dealing with a vastly greater temple, designed to cover, not a city block, but the whole world: “for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are”.In that temple, as a wise master-builder, Paul laid a foundation. And “other foundation can no man lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” Yet with all Paul's skill as a master builder, the work is still God's for it was God's grace that allowed him to be a builder.Paul and Apollos snd Cephas were agents in God’s hands each doing the work assigned to him. That is the figure under which Paul describes the church. What then do we expect in a building, and by inference- what should we expect in the Church ?In a building we expect to find shelter from the weather; we expect protection from foes; we look for a place where we may build up a family life; a place which we may decorate with works of arts; where we may have each his own task to do and his own contribution to make to the happines of the whole family, and a place where we may bring our friends, and from which we go out refreshed to do the world’s work.In God's building we look for all these things — shelter from the storms of the world, death and trouble and disaster and refuge also from the assaults of the Evil One.In God’s building we have means of establishing up God's family; in that building we cultivate the beauty of holiness, and gather the treasures of saintliness. In this same letter Paul tells us of the diversities of gifts, but the same spirit, diversities of ministrations and the same Lord. There is no monotony in God's building. There is even room in the building for strangers to come in provided they can accommodate themselves to the ways of God’s building. And above all it is the place from Which we go out strengthened and refreshed to do God's will in His World.Insurance payments pass cost of new Insurance Companies in Canada have paid out in automobile accident claims during the past five years more than twice as much as Canada's entire share of the St.Lawrence Seaway.“ This fact was revealed by Den- 18 C.Wilson, AIIC, Director of Rous & Matthews and Associates Ltd., insurance brokers before driver-instructor classes being given at Sir George Williams College, under the sponsorship of the West End Traffic Safely Council. These classes are composed chiefly of high-school teachers from various parts of eastern Canada who are taking the instructor course in driver education, Mr.Wilson told them that according to figures supplied by All Canada Insurance Federation, which is closely associated with the Safety Council in making the course possible.the total claims figures for 1954-38 were $722,000,000.Mr.Wilson reviewed the var- Seaway ious type of automobile insurance policies and stressed the relationship between accident claims and insurance rates pointing out that the ‘under 25” driver presents a serious problem, not only to traffic enforcement agencies but to insurance companies as well.“In fact,” he revealed, “last year, almost 30 per cent of all passenger car accidents involved drivers under’ 25," Mr.Wilson explained that rates are determined by four major factors: Where you live; the age group of the drivers; the driver's record; and the use of the car.He emphasized that “unmarried drivers, under 25 years of age, have the worst driving record, therefore, they pay the high- rates.Because the probabilities that they will be involved in a costly accident have been repeatedly shown to be greater when people under 25 own their own car, their rates aro even higher than if they are secondary drivers of the family car.“ i oy THAT'S IT SON ! Championships.(Continued on Page 17) Water-babies splash with dads as swimming confidence gained By JOHN RAY Each Saturday 15 children and nine adults make their way for the Westmount YMCA pool. There they | are met by the Physical Director and his two assistants, Jack Maiuro and John Wilson. So far this seems not out of the ordinary but a closer lopk will reveal that the children are between the ages of four and eight. As part of the YMCA’s drive to teach more children and adults to swim.Mr.Ray this summer has inaugurated a five- week class for children between four and eight years, Each child must be accompanied by a male adult into the pool.Although five weeks of lessons wil not make everyone a swimmer, all pupils should be “water free” which means they haven't a fear of water but a respect for it.In this we have not been disappointed, as all of the 15 pupils mow enter the water and willingly take lessons.A big factor in this is the father's assurance of being in the water with the child. One of the most popular members of the class is little Karen Teff wko at four now shows no fear of the water and is a leader for the others to follow.Others showing good progress are Patricia and Peter Wallace, aged eight and six respectively.Peter, once afraid of water, now goes off the diving board while Patricia now makes the width on her own.: Q , Others in the first class, who rare doing very well, are Robert Wallace, Alexander Dinton, and George McGonegal, all aged four Daniel Boyer, six, and Susan Wippell, five, are also doing well and two more lessons should make an appreciable difference for them. The second class is not being outdone by the first, even ithough no swimmers have yet ‘come up, but a big “A” for effort is given and the next two lessons should see at least two or three swimming the width. This class is very much a family affair, as three of the boys, Michael, Allan, and Kevin, are all from the Farrell family, Their ages are 8, 6, and § respectively, Two other members are the Dobsons, Christopher, 8, and Kenneth, 7.The lone member of the class with only his Dad is Gary Scott, 5.We hope that these classes will continue each summer, and also extend am invitation to | © Westmount families to -join us im the pool on Tuesday and Friday nights for the family swim. For these periods, only children three years old and over will be allowed in if accompanied by a parent. Not forgetting other West- mount residents, there are mixed swim periods Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons. The men may enjoy swimming any afternoon from 5.30 until 7 p.m.every day except Saturday, when the period is from 3.30 to 6 p.m.Unfortunately individual instruct ion during the summer is not possible, but I or one of the lifeguards will be willing to advise or demonstrate on a limited basis.DIXON TO COACH Gymnastics will again play a big part of the YMCA's fall Situated a mile and a half north of the village of
