attached to them, and a puppet theatre was proposed.Architect Harry Mayerovitch donated his services and drew up a solid puppet theatre, which was constructed soon after.This small theatre will remain as a permanent contribution to King\u2019s School art classes, after the presentation of Dicken\u2019s \u201cChristmas Carol.\u201d The character parts in the story were dramatized, all members of the striking the parked auto.Bus, tiny car scrape sides at intersection A small English car, driven by Terry Mcauley, 28, of 7793 de Gaspe street, suffered minor damage when struck by a 35-foot MTC bus at Victoria and Sherbrooke street Saturday afternoon.Bus driver G.B.Lachance, 38, of Rosemount, told Westmount police he was preparing to make a right-hand turn, and that the length of his vehicle required to be several feet away from the curb before turning.He stated that he did not see the smaller car, which subsequently became wedged between bus and curb.Mr.Mcauley, who had pulled up his swimming pool \u201cA city the size of Westmount should have a swimming pool,\u201d maintains Irving Backler, a vice-president of the Westmount Municipal Association and nominee for one of the two city council seats which become vacant in 1960.\u201cThe only swimming available in Westmount is provided by the YMCA pool,\u201d he pointed out, \u201cand that cannot and should not be expected to provide for the needs of the many children and adults in the city.\u201d Interviewed at his Roxbo- rough avenue home, Mr.Backler spoke of elections and of the Westmount Municipal Association.\u201cIf the aldermanic seats shortly to become vacant were contested, would you run?\u201d he was asked.\u201cNo,\u201d stated Mr.Backler.\u201cWe are not running on a political platform,\u201d he explained, referring to himself the second candidate put forward by the Westmount Municipal Association, Mr.M.L.Tucker.\u201cThe council is made up of individuals who carry portfolios such as finance, or light and power, who must consider the city as a whole.\u201d Mr.Backler felt that an election, based on political or geographical subdivisions within the city, might result in favoritism for certain districts.Now vice-president of the WMA, and at one time chairman of the housing and zoning committee.Mr.Backler said that he felt he had gained \u201can objective view of what the citizen is thinking\u201d in his work with the Association.\u201cActually, 1 became sincerely interested in civic affairs only when nominated to the housing and zoning committee about three-and-a-half years ago,\u201d he said.He criticized the citizens of Westmount for lack of interest in civic affairs.\u201cThe people and the press complain of not being informed of what is going on,\u201d he added.They are behind the times.Open council meetings now precede general committee meetings.In the previous administration, the reverse was true, and motions put forward in council were practically a \u2018fait their paid-for copies of The Examiner, will understand the delight with which this paper reports that there likely is to be, at long last, a municipal election.Some, we know, will not agree with the principle which we have been espousing now for two or three years \u2014 that elections and public discussion of public affairs are good things.Westmount by habit does not go in for municipal voting nor for full open debate on civic business in City Council.Instead, over the years the custom has grown that the Westmount Municipal Association nominate mayors and aldermen and that, unopposed, they are elected by acclamation to work in the main behind closed doors.+ * * WHY are they unopposed?Because Westmount is an extremely well run city, perhaps the best in the coun- trv.Efficiency is the hallmark.The public has little complaint with the day to day operation of the municipality.Under such circumstances few are going to take the trouble to question or follow Council's activities, let alone actively oppose the candidates of \u2018the establishment.\u201d But the WMA itself is concerned over the apathy of Westmount residents in municipal affairs.This is much of the WMA's own making.The WMA has placed itself between Council and people, like a screen against sight and sound in both directions.Council works in a vacuum devoid of public interest or even appreciation; the public just doesn't learn what's going on in its own City.Sufficiently disturbed has been a group of people who this week formed the West- mount Voters\u2019 Association.Its chairman, Rev.Wm.Morris, pilot who served with No.401 \u2018City of West- mount\u2019 Squadron in Germany, was {(o oppose M.L.Tucker, DSO, 352 Kensington avenue, candidate of the Westmount Municipal Association of which Mr.Tucker is a former officer.Though two seats are open, the Voters\u2019 Association was putting forward only the one candidate.The Municipal Association on Dec.8 also nominated Irving S.Backler, 44 Rox- borough avenue.for seat No.1.Mr.Backler told The Examiner in an interview that if he was opposed, he would withdraw his own candidacy.Mr.Tucker stated that he would run if his election were contested.Mr.Tucker.who has been a resident of Westmount since 1932, joined the housing and zoning committee of the West- mount Municipal Association\u2019 shortly after the end of World War Il, and was at one time chairman of the committee.Expressing the opinion that the present city council is \u201cone of the best we have ever had,\u201d Mr.Tucker spoke of the private bill currently being will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the first meeting of the Committee of Organization next February, must improve and expand its facilities, if it is to continue to fulfill its proper function in
