[" s New lights in at high school by September 6 Page 5 Firemen called for upturned flarepots The Fire department got a few helping hands on August 2 with the overturned flarepots on Western avenue. For a few minutes they were being overturned faster than you can say Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Hovenden. At around 9.30 p.m.they got a call concerning overturned flarepots at Oliver and Western avenues. On the way to this call they got another telling them to go next to Kensington and Western avenues, same reason, Upon arrival at the Oliver avenue intersection they discovered the blaze extinguished by an unknown knight.Firemen arrived in time to take care of the Kensington avenue conflagration. However, a third call for overturned flare- pots at Clarke avenue and Western avenue had been answered before the fire truck arrived by the janitor of 4300 Western avenue. On August 8 flarepots sprang into the news again. This time, one was overtumed opposite 4378 Western avenue, setting fire to the wooden trestle guarding a sidewalk repair. This time, the firemen put out the fire without interference, assistance or interruption by other calls.A most co-operative fire was one Tuesday in the power cable insulation in a Hallowell and Dorchester street excavation. The Light department turned off the power and the flame extinguished itself. The Fire Department stood by to make sure no one got close enough for injury.VARIE VV YY ' YY Y XY VOL.XXXN, Ne.32 MONTREAL, FRIDAY, AUG.11, 1961 12 PAGES 53» 35 § CENTS Tyro driver experiences first crash The parked car of Hyman Schwartz, 335 changes it could be prouder. Some of the parks stand virtually unused throughout the summer because there is no demand for their facilities.Facing the facts of life by the addition of drinking fountains and comfort stations to all parks which encourage people to linger with play equipment and tennis courts would greatly increase the usefulness of these neighborhood parks.Barbecue pits, picnic tables and rustic shelters in case of sudden showers would add a new dimension to outdoor living in Westmount.Despite the recent trend toward sneers at togetherness, we are nostalgically in favor of parks where families can gather for an outdoor social.A requirement that users be licensed for the occasion and making it simple for a householder to secure a permit from City Hall to picnic payment of parking tickets.Alderman Tucker gave notice of a motion to amend the by-law 622 concerning massage parlors to bring it into line with similar legislation in Montreal.- The Council took action Monday to approve payment of $1,200 to cover the cost of the recently constructed transformer vault underground of City Hall's Sherbrooke street side lawn, A motion for 1epair to the library roof costing $6,898 was set aside for further study of the particulars by the Public Works department. The motion contemplated the removal of all slates, supplying and laying asphalt shingles, renewal of three gravel roofs, supplying and installing new gutter flashings and all valleys, plus an additional sum of $500 for possible replacement of wooden decking.Monday night s session concluded with rental business by about this time next month.Council authorized the expenditure of $16,300 for the purchase of 100 electric water heaters for rental purposes at Monday night's meeting.City Hall explained Wednesday that this would fill in a gap in the services offered by West- mount to its residents and would be comparable to similar service offered to its consumers by the Quebec Hydro. It is expected there will be four sizes, a thirty gallon water heater at $1.50 per month, a 40 gallon tank at $1.75 per month, a 50 gallon size at $2.00 per month and à 63 gallon tank at $2.25 per month. The heaters will be of steel lined with glass and with two heating elements to provide quick recovery when the hot water in the tank is used.It was further explained that installation would be included in the monthly rental, provided electrical and plumbing connections are available at the exact spot at which the house holder wants the heater installed. There will be a minimum term lease required prior to installation.Prices and specifications are being checked now by the city prior to receiving tenders.Fire department radios for the salvage and pump wagons authorized by Council in July are being installed now.The Fire department's annual in- service inspections is being conducted between Western avenue and Sherbrooke street at present.Chief Ed Harper says they are behind schedule due to so many rainy days during which inspections cannot be made. The Police department has a new trophy case in the hall on your left just as you go in the front door.In it will be installed the many trophies public meeting. However, he found it most interesting and informative. Also, he did not notice any other West- mounters attending.Ad Taxicab firms get new stands Monday night the Council granted a permit to Westmount Taxi Service Limited to establish a cab stand for six cabs on the northeast corner lots of Greene avenue and Selby street and a four cab stand on lots on the south side of St.Catherine street.Next, it passed a companion motion granting Veterans Taxi Owners Association a permit to establish a stand for 15 taxicabs on Greene avenue on lots south of 1336 Greene and permission to sublet the rear portion of the same lot for private parking.City Manager Norman Dawe told Council that application of Veteran Taxi was received several days prior to that of West- mount
