The record is dropped onto a stationary platform, and the arm descends ever so gently into the lead-in groove.Only then will it start.And there is no slow pickup — a full 33 rpm is attained immediately.The tone arm itself is very well designed, and moves easily both vertically and laterally, thus assuring a perpendicular position of the stylus, at all times, so important for proper tracking and stereo.A micrometer adjustment allows precise setting of stylus pressure, and since the arm is acoustically isolated and resonance free, this virtually eliminates tracking error, even at low settings.1 have found my GS-77 will perform satisfactorily at just under 3 grams with a good record, This pressure will not The vary more than one gram re- more, gardless of the number of re- gentle cords stacked on the turntable.touch Cartridge changing, too, is made very easy, with a cartridge holder (two provided) that removes with the turn of a knurled screw.Most good changers will permit mixing of different sized records, but the GS-77 goes a step further with its ‘‘Speed Minder’, a device that automatically plays 10 and 12” 33 rpm records and 7° 45r's regardless of their position in the stack, at the correct speed.Needless to say, the motor is a shielded four-pole job and completely hum free.But I was completely overwhelmed when I measured the power cord — ils à full six feet long.and two four-foot shielded wires that go to the amplifier.Here then is Bul consider the man (or woman) who is not a groove hopper.These people are tired after a hard day's work and went to relax to some music.They want to put on a stack of records and just forget about the machine.On the other hand, they paid a lot of money for those records, and would hate to see them ruined after only a few plays.These factors must have weighed heavy on the minds of certain people, who have come up with an ingenious sulution to this dilemma.Turntable pause As far as I can determine, there is only one make of changer that will stop turning when a record is about to be dropped onto the turntable.This is the Glaser Steers model GS-77, a truly amazing machine & successfully designed a changer that is beautifully simple and trouble free.Music appreciation concert A concert of recorded music, open to the public free of charge.will be presented at the Mechanics’ GLASER * STEERS World s only Institute Library, 1200 Atwater record changer avenue, next Wednesday, at 8:15 with turntable pm.PAUSE Emery Justus, MA, ES, will be $72.95 | commentator, and the music will consist of sclections from the e ee © © © © ® | operas of Verdi, Puccini, and PAYETTE RADIO Wagner.St.James Street The soloists will be Louisa Near University | Miller and Jan Peerce, Gigli and Caniglia, Cesare Siepi, Lauritz * * UN.6-6681 * * Melchior, and Loite Lebman.- Since Liszt has always beeu a ‘favorite with artists, the only reason he has not been as popular with students is that his music on the whole is far too difficult, therefore only the advanced or serious ; weekly meeting, Wednesday, heard the story from the other point of view — by the Crown Prosecutor, Kenneth C.MacKay, Crown Attorney for the District of Mont.! real, told members of the club that | the question of the abolition or retention of capital punishment crosses many party lines, divides police and prison officials, sociologists, lawyers, and layman alike.“We should put aside emotional and sentimental arguments.We should consider only the logical Mr.MacKay illustrated his talk with a number of instances of capital punishment which took place in England through the centuries.The speaker said to look back at the past history of capital pua- ishment and its gradual restriction to particularly heinous crime, it was an unavoidable conclusion that within 10 years capital punishment would be abolished in Canada, except for treason, and possibly the execution of professional cri-' minals.Swift detection Discussing whether capital punishment acted as a deterrent to murder, Mr.MacKay said he con-: sidered the greatest deterrent to any offence was the sure knowledge that a crime will be followed by swift and sure detection.| “I think it is only common sense .to say that what really decides the ! criminal is whether on the ome’ hand he thinks that if he does the job he will get away with it, or whether he thinks that if he does it he will be caught and punished,’ he said.“The chief deterrent to crime is not the severity of the punishment, but the certainty of conviction.But according to those re- spoasible for law enforcement, the death penalty is an effectual deterrent in the casc of professional criminals.” Mr.MacKay concluded his talk by telling members of the Rotary Club that if they were to fulfil their obligations as leaders of the community, they must seriously consider questions such as this.“The laws of a democratic state are but the reflection of the views of a majority of the citizens.These views, whatever they may be.must be made known to those who represent us, to formulate the Jaws,” said the speaker.The Westmount Examiner, Fridey, November 24, 1961 11 Local girl St.Lambert rink Curling Club Bonspiel was woa this week by a St.Lambert rink.skippered by Mrs.G.Overall.The rink won the Remine Trophy in Rugger Union championship and the Mair Shield for Ottawa Beavers in a tense the competition, played at the struggle with Westmount on Saturday.Some fine defensive play, particularly by skipper Fred Spence at full back, had: allowed the Westies to hold Playing with a strapped up shoulder, speedy winger George Jones received the ball inside the Westmount half.sprinted down the right wing and punted over a screen of defenders.The Westmount full back Fred Spence appeared to have the ball well covered when he shpped in the mud, Jones, travelling al express speed.raced in belund him to register the only score of the gate Personal tragedy Spence’s only error in an otherwise flawless display came at the 10 minute mark of extra time and was a personal tragedy for the Westmount captain, whose deadly tackling and defensive kicking had broken up persistent Ottawa raids.Westmount kicked off into a biting wind in 35 degree temperature.Ottawa was gettmg the better of the carly play but their frozen fingered backs dropped the vital passes At the 12 minute mark John Brebner missed a great opportunity to put Ottawa in the lead when he pulled an easy penalty kick wide of the upright.Both defences were on top as the game resolved itself into a tough forward battle.Westmount's Ben Dibben, Jim Adam, lan Robertson and Bert Wyatt matched the Ottawa heavyweights Graham Sadler, Jack Don- aghy.John Russel and Gordoa ‘Horse’ Bennet in a spirited line- out duel.the Beavers scoreless in the regular period.Rough treatment Both fly halves — key link men hetween their forwards and three- quarter backs — were being subjected to rough treatment at the hands of their opposing wimg forwards.Terry Ryan bottled up the Ottawa ace Doug.Mitchell while West- mount's Alaistair Wittet suffered a bad case of the jitters, repeatedly fumbling the ball and rarely finding the target with his touch kicks.After a series of dull mauls the game burst to life when Bud Haw charged down a Peter Mond kick and went dashing for the West.mount line m a 25 yard corkscrew run that was stopped close to the line.The Westmount forwards relieved pressure with a fierce rush that opened the way for Chris.Carr to put in bold run and a punt that had the Ottawa fullback in trouble.Only smart covering and a degree of luck saved a trickly position.Play swung to the other end and the chunky Ottawa wing.T.Davies, menaced the Westmount line with a swerving rua before x being tossed into touch, Just before half time John Breb- ner missed a 20 yard angled penalty goal.Westmount advantage With the wind advantage West- long periods in the second half.Scrum half Martin Lewis and his forwards closed the game up, advancing the ball with short rushes and ground gaining punts.Ben Dibben was inches short of a touchdown as he extruded his 6 ft.4 inches in a desperate dive from a loose scrummage near the Ottawa line.Lewis was showing good form at scrum half, varying his tactics to unsettle the Ottawa defence.Spinning out of tackles he made ground on sneak plays, to bring centres Donaghy and Philpott mto action.Philpott in particular made several ground gaining runs in his best performance this season.The Westmount wings Chris.Carr and Roy Hamilton had few chances to show their real form.Among the Ottawa backs scrum half R.Thompson was a standout.shovelling out a steady stream of accurate passes while under fire.Their wings Bud Haw and T.Davies were determined runners who headed goalwards al every opportunity.Full back John Brebner turned in his usual polished performance marred only by two missed penalty kicks.Someried yet not even the acknowledged authority can unlock the secret of Archie's age.Conceding that there is a difference of opinion here between himself and his mother (she says he was born Dec.13, 1913 in Mississippi and he says 1916 in either Missouri or Illinois), Archie suggested a compromise: “My mother should know, she was there.But so was | I have given this a lot of thought, and have decided that I must have been three when I was born.” The issue came up officially, Jack reports, when Archie ran for the California legislature in 1960.On his nomination papers he gave his birthplace as Mississippi and Missouri, arguing that both states deserved the honor.Under “occupation” he wrote, “light heavyweight champion of the world,” reluctantly shortening this to “light heavyweight champion’ to get inside the legal three-word limit.It was none of the election officials’ business that there are 47 states where he isn't champion.A fot aborigine For that ma‘‘er Archie isn't a light heavyweight either, except on the dread occasions when business requires him to make the 173-pound limit.He approaches these rare ordeals warily.“I'm circling the problem now,” he said on one occasion, “looking it over carefully.1 may pounce at any time.” Once he begins reducing, however he rates himself second only to the Australian aborigines as an authority on dietetics.(“Did you ever see a fat aborigine?’’) He is generous with advice on dietary matters.“You can eat as much as you like,” he explains, “as long as you don't swallow it.” Neither Arch nor his biographer is unappreciative of his gift of tongue.“] am a great sidewalk talker,” the champion told Murphy.“1 can talk Mexican fashion, squatting on my heels, or big- city style with my spine up against a lamp post or a building, or even garment-center technique, with my backside at the edge of a curb” He can also talk in the ring, as Ernie Braca pointed out after Archie stiffened Ernie's tiger, Tony Anthony Braca complained that Archie's chatter confused Anthony.“Please remind Mr.Biraca,” Archie said, ‘that I mixed a few punches into the conversation.” Curator of Jack Murphy has done a great piece about a great man.Neither the magazines devoted to sports nor the big general circulation periodicals that carry frequent sports articles come up with anything ap proaching this quality.It is by far the most revaling It is by far the most revealing lished .eamulit-dimensional portrait having as many facets as the quicksliver character it depicts.It traces the hungry kid out of reform school to the bearded boulevardier whose wife doesn't object to a whiskery kiss because a girl doesn't mind going through a little bush to get to a picnic.” A reader of the saga finds it easy to understand why Archie does not like fight managers, though he is fond of Dr.Jack Kearns, who does his business today.Doc's sometimes larcenous talents as a wheeler and dealer and Archie's gifts in the ring complement cach other perfectly.“You could give Doc 200 pounds of steel wool.” the Mongoose says in honest admiration "and he'd kmt you a stove.” (0) 196) New York Mesald Tribune Ine.‘Ounce’ is the name givea to the saow leapard, a member of Island, Hawail, the cat family, native to the moun: was the first to open in the islands tains of central Asia.vod (be first west of the Rockies.on Mau} in 1831, Lahainaluna school, founded 24 Tho Westmount Enaminer, Friday.November 24, 1961 Q > C.C.M: SKATES ;
