that those who are troubled and alone can seek and find hope and renewed strength in the promise of rebirth the season brings. We hope that those who are struggling to maintain their faith experience the certainty of divine love that was manifested in Bethlehem. We hope that none will fall victim to the hazards created by modern life and its inventions. That all will survive to know another able to carry that peace and goodwill with them when the holidays are over.We hope that each and everyone is able to find cause and the means for YOU SAY Asks Centre clarification Sir: The name of the West- mount Centre has been brought up at the Dorion inquiry.Considering the circumstances, surely City officials will find out what exactly was the favor or information mentioned in connection with the Centre at the inquiry .The Centre was too controversial for too long to now be allowed to be built so long as there is any question, or rumour, of there being more to the whole affair than the citizens of Westmount have heen told. What goes on?A.P.B.Separatism in Westmount ?Sir: Now that we have a new flag, I wonder if the City of Westmount will condescend to fly it?I have never scen anything on the City's flag poles but the Union Jack.Westmount’s Mayor recently has stated the need for co-operation with its neighhors .We have all deplored the excesses of extremists in our province.Surcly our failure to fly any other flag is not only extremism at its worst, but a provocation to hotheads. Its about time the separatists in Westmount realized that there is little difference between their attitudes and those of the R.I.N.Let's join Canada or get out of it altogether.A CANADIAN A ap TR RE: TN RR aH RNB ESA LN RHEE a re-dedication to values and goals we may have lost sight of in the trials and realities of the year since last we celebrated the birth of Christ.Eliminate home hazards for Christmas holidays 25 Years Ago in The Examiner Dec.27, 1939 Twenty-five years ago in The Examiner the following editorial appeared under the heading ‘NEW CANADIAN FLAG": Canadians learned with a great deal of interest the past week that the soldiers of the First Canadian contingent, arriving in England, carried a flag which may become the official flag of Canada. The fact is interesting both in view of the discussion that has taken place in Parliament from time to time on the subject, and because all the other Dominions have distinctive flags of their own.Unofficially Canada has had a flag for many years — the red ensign, or Lancashire duster, plus the Canadian consulates and trade offices all over the world, but it has never been officially adopted by Parliament. The subject has invariably been ‘talked out’ in the House for the reason that some of the designs submitted have been atrocious both from an artistic and heraldic point of view, and because at times the idea has been sponsored by groups whose object was the breaking, by slow degrees, of the British connection. But Canada needs a flag, from a practical as well as a sentimental viewpoint. And now our soldiers have taken one to England that is both correct and beautiful, The Union Jack holds the place of honor, of course, symbolizing our British connection.Opposite it is the fleur-de-lys of Old France, while beneath" a three scarlet maple leas the whole on a backëfoün > teption The Christmas holiday, more than any other, is centered around the home and the family.Coupled with the fact that more accidental deaths occur in December than in any other month, this means that every family should do its utmost to eliminate home hazards that could mar the happy time by needless tragedy.According to the National Safety League of Canada, many accidents over the holiday season result from general bustle and.confusion, putting the most safety-con- scious person temporarily off- guard.“This makes it all the more imperative that families bear in mind the major hazards in the home — fires, slips and falls,” says Gay McLaren, the League's general manager.Falls are caused in a variety of ways, according to N.S.L.: Toys scattered around the floor; climbing too high to hang decorations; using a chair or some other makeshift device instead of a stepladder for climbing, ignoring ice on steps and sidewalks.Fire hazards can be reduced if holiday decorations are fireproof or fireresistant.Keep inflammables — paper.tree bough, ribbon — away from lights, candles, and fireplaces .Christmas trees require the most attention.Every year the official one of this country. It got a tremendous rein England (as in- , anything Canadian does : se days); and, we venture many go up in flame causing families to suffer hardships and even tragedies. These can be prevented by checking decoration wiring; dryness of tree and removing ashtrays near the tree.Yule advice: Jovial Joe no longer safe A holiday is a time for frivolity and carefree joy, time to be convivial and friendly, a time to be intermittently host and guest. In the days when highways were laneways and Dobbin could find his own way home, Jovial Joe was comparatively safe on his junkets. It's different today.Joe, still jovial and junketing, has command of a couple of hundred horsepower and a two-ton vehicle amid thousands of other similarly uninhibited celebrators. The same manoeuver that dropped an alcoholic mist over his unfocussing eyes builds within him a boldness and recklessness that reduces his driving ability and produces an unguided missile that takes human life in horrifying quantity.Keep that effervescent Christmas cheer between the walls of your home, or take a taxi. There'll come another Christmas and New Year's and you might want to be around, but not as a shameful memory.CROWN LAND Of Canada’s total area 3,851,- or field, of white. It is probable * lo predict, will make a big 809 square miles, nearly 90 per that, having been baptized in hit in France when
