Îts Westmount operations Zimmerman Bishop firm: St.Stephen sale offer still stands Residents of the neighborhood seeking to prevent disappearance of St.Stephen's Church drew encouragement, apparently unfounded, from the unannounced appearance there Sunday morning of newly consecrated Bishop Reginald Hollis to celebrate Holy Communion and preach. In the course of his sermon, the head of the Anglican Diocese of Montreal stated that if T.Pringle & Sons Ltd.were to withdraw their offer to purchase, then a new look would be taken at the situation. However, Bishop Hollis stressed that the Corporation of St.Stephen’s and the diocese felt legally and morally bound by their acceptance of an offer of $400,000 for the Atwater- Dorchester site and its three buildings—church, parish hall and rectory—and told The Examiner- yesterday that ‘we are in no position to cancel the sale.” Previously, as local opposition “ to the transaction mounted, the president of Pringle, Robert Layton, was quoted as saying his firm would withdraw if asked by the church authorities to do so.Bishop Hollis appeared to write finis to that possibility this week.Mr.‘Layton, meanwhile, was overseas on business.New demonstration The new spiritual leader of Anglicans in Montreal and surrounding area was consecrated Saturday morning and enthroned that afternoon in colorful, traditional ceremonies in Christ Church Cathedral.A handful of demonstrators bearing “Save St.Stephen's’ placards appeared outside the cathedral shortly before Rt.Rev.Hollis arrived to knock three times with his staff on the church door, demanding admittance to take his throne. The demonstrators attempted to voice their protests to him at the door,” but the ceremonies proceeded without Continued on page two Offices robbed Five offices at 4036 .St.Catherine street were broken into last night or early this morning.A television set is know to have been stolen, and office supplies are presumed missing.Detectives are still awaiting lists of stolen goods.OFFICIATES Following his consecration and enthronement Saturday, Rt.Rev.Reginald Hollis, the HERE: new Anglican Montreal, Sunday morning came unannounced and unattended to celebrate Holy Communion at St.Stephen’s, Westmount. The remaining congregation of the 72-yedr- old local church, now contracted to be sold and long without a rector, is scheduled to be disbanded May 12.Valentines at Library There will be a display of late 19th century valentines at the Westmount Library, starting on Tuesday. The fascinating cards have been kindly lent by Miss D.Coles and Mrs.G.Dorey.Children are asked to bring valentines to the children’s library to be exhibited on the display boards.TODAY'S WORLD, Bishop of DOH HEHE aw Reader's Digest will have to close its West- mount operation if present federal legislation affecting the magazine is approved, Digest President E.Paul Zimmerman told The Examiner this week. The company has surveyed over 100 of its largest advertisers and finds it would lose 65 percent of its major advertising revenue if tax allowance is not permitted for advertising in the magazine.“From what (Hon.Hugh) Faulkner has said, it would appear the government plans to rescind section 19 subsections 2 and 4 of the Income Tax Act (regarding advertising in Canadian-based, foreign-owned publications). If that's all that is changed, then we- cannot survive,” the magazine executive declared.“If Parliament accepts some changes in the committee stage, we might be alright.” Opinions sought The legislation, given first reading in Parliament last Thursday, now is under study by a special committee.Reader's Digest is developing submissions to that body, and Mr.Zimmerman has asked West- mounters with views on the subject to send letters to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Westmount MP Hon.C.M.Drury on the subject.“1 don't believe any responsible Canadian government will restrict this corporation to the extent that it will not serve the Canadian purpose,” Mr.Zimmerman said, reassuringly.“Where do you think publishing is going to go if we fold in West- mount? The road is paved to Toronto.” Continued on page 25 Murder probe stalled Homicide squad investigators have no new leads nor heen able to pursue investigation of the Jan.10 murder on Irvine avenue of F.Barry Bunch.A MUC police spokesman said yesterday that detectives have not precluded other possible motives for the 38-year-old bachelor’s murder, but are continuing to assume that the crime was committed after he discovered thieves in the residence.Cae eee 2 - The Westmount Examiner, Thursday.January 30, 1975 Arcadians show stopped in church hall by city The City of Westmount stopped a special public show being presented by the Arcadians theatrical group in St.Stephen's church hall last Friday evening, as police officers served the group with a last-minute writ that the building was unsafe for public performances. The notice said that the building was unsafe on the basis of an inspection carried out in 1973, according to the Arcadians’ president, Jarvis de Conde, and that furthermore it should not be used for rehearsals. The Ar- cadians have- used the building since 1968.The announced performances of ‘‘The Boyfriend” will, accordingly, -take place on the coming two weekends at the downtown YWCA, 1355 Dor- chester boulevard west.Rumors in city hall that the Arcadians had called for the public show to focus attention on the church were denied by Mr.de Conde, who pointed out that auditions had been held Nov.8 and advertisements had been published the previous week. The group’s minutes show further that even before that time the Arcadians had planned the performance for the church hall.Announcement of the upcoming sale of St.Stephen’s appeared in The Examiner Nov.14, and protests started shortly afterward.City justified *‘1 personally feel the City of Westmount was -thoroughly justified in making the cancellation from a public safety point of view,” Mr.de Conde said yesterday, though he was ‘worried about ‘so many odd things going on.” st.Stephen's.Continued from page one further incident.‘ ' A spokesman for the ‘‘Friends of St.Stephen’s’ movement, Mrs.John Blanchard, told The Examiner Monday that most of that group deplored the cathedral demonstration, which she attributed to members of the “Save Montreal'’ organization.Be that as it may, Bishop Hollis said yesterday that in no way was his appearance at St.Stephen’s Sunday influenced by the cathedral demonstration of the day before or by earlier representations concerning the sale of -the property—which Pringles intend to clear and erect on it a building for the their own use as consulting engineers.Turpin scheduled The greatly diminished congregation of St.Stephen’s has been supplied for some time by visiting clergy and lay readers for its alternating Sunday Eucharists and morning prayer services.Scheduled to officiate at last Sunday's .10:30 am communion was Canon R.M.Turpin, 588 Cote St.Antoine road, who is executive officer of the diocese.Canon Turpin was unable to attend Saturday’s cathedral rites, however, because of illness and the new bishop therefore advised him that he would take over Sunday's duty at St.Stephen’s in Mr.Turpin’s stead. This he did, unannounced and unassisted. There were 42 communicants; the previous Sunday had seen a total congregation of 23 at mattins. The Anglican Church’s announced intention.is to invest the $400,000 from the sale in a fund commemorating St.Stephen's parish, the interest to be used for programs for and assistance to the elderly.Entertainment & Eating Out SL AAR shail nd the > A f \\y - duty.” Mr.Dawe said two other groups had been denied permission to put on performances at the hall as the result of the 1973 inspection, but presumed there had been ‘some confusion’
