was well used but had not existed long enough to offer a good idea of its success. It was relatively inexpensive, they claimed, and offered good access to recreational facilities in Westmount Park as well as shopping on Greene and Victoria avenues. They also argued that the path succeeded in reducing the volume of traffic on de Maison- neuve and offered a ‘‘controlied environment’ on which to teach children proper use of bicycles. To council's claim that accidents had been reported on the route, the committee spokesmen argued that council had yet to produce police reports (be- cent of them using de Mai- sonneuve in the wrong direction. Not only that, the weekend weather produced almost as many cyclists as pedestrians, he found. On Saturday, from 5:05 to 6:05 pm, Mr.Udy counted 47 that Mayor Mac- Callum joined Alds.David Car- ruthers and Mel Nixon in supporting the route, while Alds.Brian Gallery, Muriel Kaplan, Alwyn Lloyd and P.André Ger- vais rejected the idea.Mayor MacCallum actually lent his support to the bicycle path committee during council’s question period on Monday by suggesting that those who supported the path join the group.Mrs.Maria Cranker, 265 Melville avenue, and Lionel Moser of Academy road offered support for the route, but said they were not members of the path committee.Westmount Saturdays, Sundays and holidays Victoria Hall, 4626 because we love the country it flies over.George Springate is proud enough to get Turn out I'T is perhaps too easy during this very political month of May to think of nothing but the referendum. No matter the outcome 12 days from now, however, Westmount will still be u community which must face other, more local, problems affecting its po lice, recreation facilities, bicveles, schools. The Westmount Municipal Association will gather Tuesday evening in Vic toria Hall to discuss these, and other, community problems at its annual meeting. We hope the word ‘‘referendum’ isn’t mentioned, unless someone is talking about a zoning change. The meeting is an important one, not just for the WMA and its members, but for the community as a whole, because a strong turnout and a productive meeting is vital to the future strength of the association and because a strong municipal association is important to the overall well-being of Westmount.A community such as Westmount is only the sum of what its citizens put into it.Our parks, our efficient city administration, our fire department, our zoning rules, our way we go about things are all reflections of what are all reflections of what West- mount’s citizens have said they wanted and needed over the years to give them the community they desired. That requires input.A strong municipal association is a proven and good way to allow the average citizen to make his contribution. But, in Westmount, a strong municipal association has been missing for some years. The easy thing has been to write off the WMA much as we used to write off our senior citizens, confining it as them to the pile of aging relics that were good up on a platform and wave the flag.He did it in St.Henri Monday evening. All Canadians should follow his example.Victoria Day, a traditional day for flag- waving, is coming. The day after is Referendum Day.For Canadians, what better time to fly the flag? And to be proud.Tuesday while they lasted but not worth anything when past their prime. Thus, over the past decade, more and more municipal issues have been ad dressed not by the WMA but by small or, special-interest groups which bring to their causes all the proper zeal but often without the balancing, citywide.multi-faceted input an overall munie- ipal association should be able to give to an issue.Uniike people, though, the WMA can, and should, have a youthtul, new life breathed into it.And, despite its seeming at-death’s-door existence of the past few years, there are signs the patient may yet pull through.THERE exists a core, small as it is, of hard-working, dedicated persons who want to see the WMA work and twice in the last few months the association has made important contributions on issues of pressing local concern: parking and the changes to Greene avenue. Those contributions, achieved with extremely limited manpower and resources, allow one to see the potential of a revived WMA, one that can take on the issues and be a meaningful force in determination of how those issues are resolved. There has also been some imagination shown in the format of the meeting Tuesday, allowing for discussion of almost any issue that faces the community. There is something of interest to anyone who cares in the least about the condition of the city he or she calls home.A healthy discussion, an exchange of ideas, à new life for an important community organization, could result. That's what makes this WMA annual meeting important Turn out Tuesday.for your community's sake, which is vour own.Yousay _ " Cyclists are urged to make voices heard Sir: In September it will be 10 years since what I believe to be the first bicycle petition was presented to the West- mount city council. At that meeting the mayor and councillors were very receptive to the petition and seemed glad to hear the ideas presented by various members of the audience. One councillor even vowed that “We'll be leaders in this area (of making a place for the bicycle) in the metropolitan region.”’ The result of that petition was a ‘‘temporary’’ route on Sundays which lasted a number of years, but went nowhere.Since then, a number of other petitions have been presented to city council promoting the cause of bike paths.Yet we still do not have a permanent bike path.Right now, the ‘‘experimental’’ bike path that we had last fall is in limbo and council does not seem to want to discuss the matter at the council meetings, despite the fact that people unconnected with the Westmount Bicycle Committee show up wishing to know what is happening. To at least some Westmounters, the idea of a bike path is a very important issue.Petitions keep being presented to council and every one seems to have had a strong backing. It is time that West- mount had a proper and permanent bike path. Then, perhaps, those who have worked so hard to see such a thing implemented can move onto other things, such as promoting safe bicycling among both bicyclists and car drivers.Safety, after all, is what the whole idea of bike paths is all about. The bicycle is a valid mode of transportation and we must encourage it.It is inexpensive, healthy and does not deplete our non-renewable energy sources.Westmount should take the lead in promoting the bicycle as the marvelous vehicle it is.Perhaps then, other parts of the Montreal area might follow.I urge all who have ever signed a bike petition, all who ever wanted to and all who believe in the bicycle to make their voices known to city hall. Then maybe we can look forward to the day when bike paths will no longer be necessary — the day when bicycles become a respected mode of transportation.Michael FILM-MAKER Giles Walker whose National Film Board drama Bravery in the Field was nominated for an 1980 Academy Award for best live-action short, attended last month's Oscar ceremonies in Los Angeles.“I had mixed feelings about it,” said Mr.Walker.“I was mainly nervous because I thought my bow tie would fall off and my mother would see me without it.It was loose and when Eugene Fedorenko went up for his Oscar for Every Child in the category of best animated short and froze, I looked down in my lap and saw my tie.Fedorenko is a very shy man.‘The fear with all winners is that they will freeze when beckoned to the stage.Donald Brittain (another Westmount NFB director) said once that it was the only time that he wished he wouldn't win.: “You feel that when you go there a nomination in itself is enough, but once the procedure starts you begin to want to win.You are sitting with other nominees in the same category.” Mr.Walker, 34, is a six-foot-one, fair- haired man with a quiet sense of humor. The interview was conducted in the living room of his home with a life-sized, cut-out photograph of film-maker Stanley Jackson looking on.Mr.Walker's Bravery in the Field is a very poignant film.It portrays the frustration and hostilities of an old Second World War veteran, Tommy, played splendidly by Les Rubie, and a young unemployed street ‘punk,’ Lenny, played subtly by Matt Craven.Under the direction of Walker, the aimless, lonely lives of these two men come together in a touching story revolving around Remembrance Day.Co-producers were Roman Kroiterand .Stefan Wodoslawsky; the latter attended the Hollywood ceremonies with Mr.Walker.Director of the stunning photography was Savas Kalogeras.Bravery in the Field was filmed in Saint John, New Brunswick, from which province Walker hails. There were four writers on the film all of whom live in Westmount: Mr.Walker, Robert Duncan, John Harrison and Ian MacNeill.Inspired by clipping ‘’The film was inspired by a newspaper clipping Bob Duncan saw on November 11, 1976,” said Mr.Walker.“It was about a war veteran who had been beaten up and robbed by some young men.The war veteran said he would go to war again today for people of his own generation but he wouldn't fight for the youth of today.‘So we realized that there was a real generation gap in understanding between the two generations. What the film does is bridge that gap.” Bravery in the Field is one of a series of 12 films called ‘Adventures in History’ which were made primarily for high school students to awaken their interest in Canadian history. The film goes into the schools this fall.CBC-TV showed it last week and last October.“We worked on the script for two years and did 15 drafts,” said Mr.Walker.“It was filmed in November, 1978.“Amusing incidents occurred when we } were rehearsing the fight scene in which the youths rob the old man of his pension money and medals. On two occasions we had people trying to break up the fight. One person called the police who arrived on the scene. One woman came rushing into the fight and tried to separate the youths and the old man.She was very embarrassed when she “heard what it was all about.I thought it was a good reflection on the people of Saint John.Even if there is a real fight, so many people wouldn't step in.” Mr.Walker said it was a frightening experience filming the fight scene because he was trying to make it completely realistic.“We all felt that we were witnesses to a mugging.” In one compelling final scene, a chagrined Lenny returns the war medals to the old man.‘‘In the script there was no that are being made in - English Canada. They don’t in any way reflect our own culture or our history. They are pseudo-American films made for the box office. They are totally forgettable films. In five years they will vanish from the face of the earth.“On the other hand, Quebec filmmakers are making the kind of films we should be making. We shouldn't be making ‘Canadian’ films because they are Canadian but because they will be films about things we understand and know something about and therefore will be of universal appeal.“A film from our own culture will have a
