this, together with the failure of the wheat crop, makes the prospect look rather dark to the farming community of that district, In some parts the farmers are busily engaged in sowing fall wheat, the Seneca variety being much used, In the county of Victoria farmers are busily engaged in threshing ; it is thought fall wheat will be nearly a complete failure, spring wheat not 80 bad, as the majority of farmers will be able to realize fully half a crop.Oats and peas are considerably above the average.Bush fires are doing an immense amount of damage, destroying valuable woodlands, burning fences, and running over stubble and meadow lands. In the United States, also, hundreds of acres of valuable timber, hay and grain are being destroyed.Wheat all over this country is still spoken of as below the average, and root crops in some places are found to be a complete failure, in none above the average.Oatsand peas are a fair crop and will amount on the average to from 25 to 30 bushels per acre. The business of moving the grain crop has just begun. The first cargo of barley shipped from Canada this season arrived in Oswego on the 8th of September. It was from the Bay of Quinte. The following is an English review of the state of the harvest in that country :—During the past week the weather has been broken and unsettled, and rain has fallen heavily at times in different parts of the United Kingdom ; this, however, has been extremely beneficial to the pastures, and to all root crops. The foliage of turnips and mangolds has changed from a dry, shrivelled appearance to a fresh green, and the bulbs are growing rapidly ; the temperature, however, is too low to push roots forward very quickly.Harvesting is still being carried on in the North, but the English cereal crop has now been almost entirely reaped, and a large portion of it secured in a satisfactory condition, The number of cargoes at ports of call is 8 of wheat, and of maize, 10, Lard, in good request, at steady prices.Cheese sells well at rather better rates. In Bacon, holders meet buyers freely, hence prices are no firmer, Butter, where fine, sells freely, other sorts are slow.In France, wheat harvesting is now finished. In New York, the flour and grain markets are considerably improved, an advance of 256 per barrel having taken place in nearly all grades of flour during the past few days. There is but little spring wheat on the market as yet, and, as with us, it is very deficient in quality.Produce and Pro- visions—During the past week, a fair demand has been experienced for breadstuffs; prices remain steady, and lower grades are in more request. The demand for pork bas been quiet, and but a light supply has been received.Lard remains steady at former quotations.À considerable quantity of butter has arrived during the week.FLoUR.— Prices, per barrel of 196 lbs, :— $ o $e Buporlor EXtr&.….….….0….0….0c1s D 60 to 575 Extra Superfine, …: 535 to 545 ANCY 00000.to 525 Sp Extra to 510 Superfine .to 450 ng Bakers’.to 525 Primes ….® 19 dB.to 800 U.0.Bag Flour, 100 lbs to 240 do do to 265 WHEAT.—Sp nominally $1,12 to $1.14; the great difficulty was to prevent a superabundance of popping from too many lovelorn swains together. But things are altered materially for the worse now, and there is tightness in the Indian matrimonial ‘market of this present year of grace: The fact is that young men cannot marry in India any longer with those prospects-of comfort which in olden days made them speak of matrimony as something awfully jolly. What with the rise in prices, the debased rupee, the frightful extravagsice of feminine fashions, and the parsimony of the Government of India, which has abolished hundreds of appointments, and.cut down the salaries of as many more, ne young man with his senses has been engaged five times since New Years, but who is now free once more. She is pa heiress in a small way, her ather having a snug 8 considerable property in the Eighth Ward, Her suitors have always been prosperous young men, Wooers save capability and worldly wealth. But she has an ambition to be loved for herself alone, and puts all her intended husbands to the test In this wise: She takes an opportunity of confiding to them, with injunctions of perfect secrecy, that her father has lost a great deal of money, and has been obliged to mortgage his dwelling house and furniture, ever, she represents, is not mortgaged for or which distinguishes him from.his comrades.SHE MEANS TO BE LOVED FOR |; From a gentleman who came in from Spring Hill, Kan,, yesterday afternoon, we obtained the particulars, as we give them bélow, of a fearful ride which was taken by a party of ten on the evening of Sunday last, in the vicinity of Spring Hill.“The party had been attending the camp meeting," which had been in progress near Spring Hill, and delayed their return home until night came on.When they started from the grounds in their waggon the heavens were heavily hung with threatening black clouds, which were ever and anon lighted up with the lurid glare of lightning.Nothing daunted by the aspect of the weather, the party drove 1apidly through the almost impenetrable darkness toward their home, keeping the road by the light given by the lightning’s bright flash, When some distance out, and not a great way from Spring Hill, the driver missed his bearings, and drove over a precipitous place, and the waggon and its human load, with the horses, were sent whirling down, down, a distance of sixty feet, with a terrible crash. The scene presented, our informant, who talked with one of the party, represents as having been one of horror. The prostrate horses groaned piteously, and their struggles were terrible to behold.#00 82d will risk the maintenance.of two.| L e =.FRESTURELAHE wi ONLY AGENTIN PROVINCE OF QUEBEC! teorage always as low as oy any other line, Fh cine.7 Bonaventure es CC E.FORSYTH, PROPRIETOR, J.A, HARTE, DRUGGIST, 128% 202 St.James strest, Montreal woo bm oan, voor w treet, or Gragg — 400 Notre Dame street, Montreal, Fr à 13 a, MABBLE MAKTLES, MONUMENTS, 40, .dat = .Always on hand.mA IPPING 00 RAILROADS, Orri0s, 130 BLEURY STREET, 1 J8E CAN ADA BH Misr, 552 WILLIAM STREET, DON'T ACHE, BEAVER LINK, dei XTRA!
