Baron Grant's Portuguese tramway prospectus was nothing to it, as where he promised ten per cent.as a maximum, the Graphic promoters held out i the more tempting bait of one hundred and | Afty, and, what 1s more, got Mr.James Stewart, of the Herald, to siga a certificate, published on the prospectus, which actually says: ‘“ The receipts are likely to | surpass the amount!” Poor, gullible, simple public, to be taken in with such upparalleled audacity. But our confiding citizens doubtless imagined that this was sn unprejudiced, unbought opinion of Mr.Stewart, of the Herald, The sequel will show, This unique document, entitled the pros- pectus—it should be preserved in the ar- .chives of our museum for the information and warning of the present generation and those who come after—starts out with stating that ‘‘ the object 6f the Company .isto establish in the United States a basi.ness, the counterpart of that carried on here by Mr.G.A.Desbarats,” It tells of the wonderful illustrating process for sav- : ing labor and money possessed by the patentees, and after enumerating numerous enterprises it could be applied to, makes a glowing promise in the following words : ‘‘ Any one of these items, monopolized as it would be by our process, could of itself constitute and support a business.” But this is modest, for, as it proceeds, it warms with ardor, and, step by step, sentence by sentence, it launches bolder and bolder, until it claps the apex of the pyramid of imaginary argument with the one hundred and fifty per cent.profit per annum, not éven excepting the first year of the enterprise, from this success, “‘ With these unparalleled facilities, we can launch in the United States what will be at once & most lucrative undertaking.” This project was to include a daily illus- brated paper—‘‘the only one in the world”—and various branches of engraving, &c., added.¢‘ The sale of such a paper at five cents would be a wonder, and an unprecedented achievement, which would make it at once a success,” These are the words of the prospectus.Four years have elapsed, the paper has been going all the time, and the verification (?) of the promoters’ words is shown by the fact that not one cent of dividend bas ever reached the sharcholders, and $500,000 of their hard cash has melted out of sight ! Fact !! startling though it be.But to proceed.¢* The cost,” quoting from the prospectus, “’ of publishing such a paper has been carefully and minutely computed, and is shown by the following figures : Daily cost of an edition of 30,000.” After enumerating in detail type-setting, press-work, paper, photographing and engraving, the amount is taken at $673, multiplied by 310 working days in the year, gives a total of $208,630, to which add, editorial staff, artists, &o., $50,000, ‘* showing the year's expense on 30,000 coples to be $268,630.” The income from sale of papers is taken at $300 per day, producing $279,000, and showing “¢ profits on sales alone, $20,370.” Next comes the revenue from advertisements, estimated at $280 per day, making $86,- 800, from which 25 cent.18 de: ducted for commission, ‘‘leaving net $65,100, added to profit on sales, makes a yearly profit of $85,470,” A minute calculation is then gone into, showing the additional profit on extra circulation. For each 10,000 copies after the first edition of 30,000, the pretit is set down for the yvac ab $50,685, making the total profit on a circulation of 40,000, $136,155 ; on 50,000 copies $186,840, and on 100,000 copies (the number estimated to be the circulation in the beginning of the prospectus), $440,265.Now, that is coming close.Just think of that—$265 over the $440,000.What minute and accurate calculation ! It must have becn a professional accountant who made up that calculation. These calculations, says the prospectus, ‘‘do not take into account the number of original illustrations which would be paid for as advertsements by parties interested, and for the insertion of which large sums wonld be frequently obtained.” Of course not; there was a mine of wealth, a perfect Bonanza, in everything connected with this huge—swindle.“Nor do we compute the subscribers in Europe, Canada and elsewhere, who could be supplied with the paper.” This was to | be another mine—it was, but instead of a | Bonanza, it was an Emma.| (To be continued in later edition.) No doubt these frequent ap- peala to the Father for the oucness of Christ’s people suggest to us the occurrence of rome great obstacles in the way of maintaining this unity ; and the experience of centuries has shown how formidable these difficulties have been; but.not the lees does the intercession of Jesus evince tha unspeakable, the indispansable importance of unity, and guarantees its full accomplishment at last.My own persuasion is that the quarrels, contentions, and, alas | I fear I must evan say hatreds, among Christians, have done more, almost, than anything else dismally to arrest the progress of the Gospel. The compactness of the tribes of Israel for forty years in the wilderness at once {reserved them from infection by the corruptions of the nations around them, and proved an indispensable requisite to the conquest of their promised inheritance.Had the Church of the New Testament times, of which Israel was typical, maia.tained a corresponding compactness, she would, by this time, havé been on her way toward the possession of her world-wide inheritance, promised to her in the person of ber Head.‘‘ Ask of Me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for.thy possessicn.” .Ît was a singular delight.to me, while Iate'y erzaged in God’s work beyond the.Atlautic, to find myself in the midsg of an assembly in British America whose components, a short time ago, represented eight separate ecclesiastical organizations, but are now combined in owe compact body—one church, It seemed to me as if a new factor had suddenly appeared on the earth for the subduing, by God's grace, the world for Jesus.Ob, the power of combination, concentration, and of the unity of the Spirit in | the bond of peace.1f we take a collection of small pieces of glass, and cause the rays of the sun to pass through them, no ap.porent effect is produced.Even if the separate pieces should be rounded, ant thickened towards the centre—in which care the piece of glass, if presented to the sun would assume the character of burning assez still, the effect from the amall- ess of the glasses would not be grrat at one spot. But let all the pieces of glass be melted and cast, so as to form a lens of tbirty or thirty-two inches ia diameter, ard then be held up so as to concentrate and trapsmit the rays of the sun, the ia.tensity of beat produced at one point will he such as to melt the hardest substance So wlth the power of combination on che part of Christ’s people, when the glorious 1ays of the Sun of Righteousness are |.brought to bear, through them, on the hearts of men on the earth, —Rev.4.N.Sumerville.GEMS OF THOUGHT.Temper is s0 good a thing that we should never lose it.It costs more to revenge wrongs than it does to bear them.: Frowns blight young children as frosty nights blight young plants, It is better to encourage what is right than to punish what is wrong, If you wich to know how an associate speaks of you to others, mark huw he speaks of them to you.Little drops of rain brighten the meadows, and little acts of kindness brighten the world.Men want restraining as well as propelling power. The good ship is provided with anchors as weli as sails, Young, the desire of pleasing renders women amiable ; yet its success in this brief period has, on tbe whole, been so much greater than that of spy other plan yet devised, thas prohibition may be said to be accepted by a large majority of the penple of this State as the proper policy towards drinking houses and tipplihg shops.” MISCELLANEOUS.Friendship is a flower that the devastating band of Time cannot crush, nor the lightning soathe.1t rears its beautifal head in the morning of prosperity aud ox- 1 pands and blooms, and casts its nectarious odor on the feeling heart ; and when the night of adversity sets in and ita chilling, withering dews fall upon its flexible leaves and humble stalk, it is not seen to sink beneath the oppressive load, but like tue melifluous rose raising itself with the weight of gems to kiss the Orient’s beams, it epiings into existence, and its beauty and its fragrance imparts a charm to all around, In these hard times itis nothing unusual to meet men who, thrown out of regular employment, have remained idle for weeks —perhaps months, The mystery is, how do they live? For live they do, and, in s(me cases, with tolerable comfort. Now, &8 everything in life is paid -for by some.bedy, the inference is that these men live upon their fellows ; are content with dise graceful sloth, and without a single sspiration or care drift on in idleness, waiting for business to revive, and for work to present itself to their hands. With such men we have little sympathy; they are, as a class, worthless fellows, It may be safely asserted that a faithful, honest, hard-working, pains taking, temperate craftsman is never altogether wish.cut employment, no matter how great the etringency of the times.Tunere is always some work to be done, some one is in need of skilled labor, and the man who bears the highest reputation is certain to be called upon.Such men can make places for themselves—cau- pot be dispensed with—must bs retained. The cry of *‘ hard times” affects them but Jittle ; they may he forced to work for awhile at reduced prices, but are too vala.able to he permitted to leave, eventhough 1etained at a loss, for the hour will come .when their want will be sorely felt, and when they will far more than remunerate the employer for any present inconvenience ard unreturned outlay.Men like these seldom complain of having * nathing to do.” It is the worthless inebriate who delights in the subterfuge, aud has it ever upon the end of bis tongue, as an excuse for his shortcomings, for rags, poverty aad standing listless upon the corners of the streets, He will not work at reduced prices—not he! Bat be will loaf, aad go ragged, and hang round bar-rooms on the chance of meeting some one who will ‘‘stand treat,” until intemperance and poverty bave him fast in their clutches. In domestic happiness the wife's.influence is much greater than her husband's ; for the one, the first cause—mutual love ar d confideuce—being granted, the whole comfort of the honsehold depends upon trifles more immediately under her jurisdiction.By her management of small sums her husband’s respectability aad credit are erected or destroyed. No for- tone can’ stand the constant leakage of extravagance and mismanagement; and more is spent in vrifles than women would ensily believe. The one great expense, whatever it may be, is turned over and carefully reflected on ere incurred; the income jg prepared to meet iti ; it is pennies imperceptibly sliding away which do mischief, end this the wife alone cau atop, for it does not come within a man’s province, There is often an unexpected trifle to be saved in every household.Itis not in eccnomy alone that a wife’s attention is s0 pecessary, but in those matters which make a well regulated house. An ma.finiebed cruet-stand, a missing key, à bnt- topless shirt, a soiled table-cloth, a mustard pot with ald contents sticking aboat it, are rcally nothing ; but each can raise an angry word or cause discomfort, Depend upon it, there is a great deal of ! domestic happiness in a well dressed mut.ton-chop, or a tidy breakfast table.Men grow full of beauty, tired of music, are often too wearied for conversation, however intellectual, but they can always appreciate a well swept hearth and smiling comfort.A woman may love her husbaad devotedly —may sacrifice fortune, friends, family, country for him—she may have the genius of a Sappho, the encanted beaun- ties of an Armida ; but—melancholy fact — if with these she fail to make her home comfortable, his heart will inevitably escape her, And women live 80 entirely in the affections that without love their existence is a void.Better submit, thea, to Lowschold tasks, however repugnant they may be to your tastes, than doom yourself to a loveless home.Women of a bizher order of miud will not ran this risk ; they know that their feminine, their domestic, are their first duties, Tt BRNWERAS, &o.WH.DOW & CoO., BREWERS AND DISTILLRERS, MONTREAL: + Indie Pale and ethur- Ales, Estra,-Double: and Single tout, In wood anû BOI ’ Familles supplied, ’ J QBN EH B.MOLSON & BROS, ALE AND.PORTER BRE WARS, 286 8t.Mary Street, Montreal, havaslways on hend the vartons kinds of ALB apa PORTER, in wood and bottle, Families regularly supplied, The following Bottlers are only supplied by us with our labels, and bave liberty to use them: — J Patrick H gaD.exve0es Telerphore Hogue, Jas Mcintyre.H, Beckett, F.Arcb-mbault.J, Goilbauit & Co.,.»«.Visitation streat l)utario stres' auchetiere strest cu.Wolf atre ++ ly.HATS, CAPS, &o.Fors: Furst Furst CHEAP!
