centre.PHOTO TINA BYE MUSIC Local bands draw new demog The owner of Grove Hall, Mark Bye, says that the venue is “trying to be a performing arts centre for all age groups for local artists to showcase their talent.” They have currently built up a solid following of adults, but Friday, August 22 marked their continuing efforts to expand their demographic and appeal to young adults and teenagers as well. That night, they hosted a triple bill featuring the following local bands: Fake it for the Fame, The Inside Track and Run, Snowball, Run.Mark says that there were about 100 people in attendance and that though there were some parents and grandparents there, the audience was predominately made up of people in their late teens and early twenties. He said of the turnout: “It’s nice to see the hall full of young local people.” KATIE MARTIN katie.martin@tc.tc Co-owner of Grove Hall, Tina Bye, says that she is “proud of how poised [the bands] are on stage and their presence.” She is also a Performing Arts teacher at CVR and so has taught the majority of the band members who performed. She remarks at how impressed with their level of professionalism, despite their youth. She says that they “understand that it's not just showing up on stage and being talented.” Mark adds that they are all “serious and dedicated performers.” Mark also makes it a point to mention that the feedback from some more seasoned musicians who came to take in the show was also positive. They commented that they couldn't believe how prepared these guys were and how very put-together their set was, noting particularly how when they were starting out as musicians, things were a little more ‘loosey goosey’ Mark explains how having three bands play meant shorter sets, but that way the bands could get in a solid 30-minute set each.Jeremy Robidoux, lead vocalist of Run, Snowball, Run, says that they prepared “a lengthy eleven[-song] all-original setlist” which they “practiced repeatedly to be able to perform a consistent set from start to finish.” Jeremy was also instrumental in getting the show organized and contacting the other bands to play that night. The show marked the release of his band’s EP, so upon contemplating venues, he knew he wanted to go for something special and Grove Hall was an easy choice. He says: “Playing at a local venue [has] a stronger crowd response, the idea of being surrounded and playing for almost all friends and family, especially with the fact that the two other bands, Fake it for the Fame and The Inside Track raphic to Grove Hall were friend bands and local as well, made it a winning combination.” Mark understands that being young musicians trying to break into the field is not an easy feat, and so Grove Hall wanted to help out in any way they could. They arranged to have both video and audio recordings of the live show and lots of pictures were taken during the event.Bernard Leduc handled the sound recording and live mixing, while Meaghan Wood took care of the lighting. The photos and recordings of the show can serve as a good compilation of tools for the bands to use later on as they are promoting their work.Tina adds that the impressive organization and coordination of the bands contributed to smooth transitions between the sets. All in all it was a successful night that, Mark says, had the “windows in the hall rattling” and the “foundation .shaking.” Tina says that by the end of the night, there was already talk amongst those involved about doing another show of the same variety this coming April.RESPITE RELIEF CENTER # Monthly (light to medium) Saint-Chrysostome For more information people’s newsfeeds are saturated with their friends dumping buckets of icy water over themselves in the name of charity.‘While the deed is noble, the method has raised some questions.True, any sort of social media craze tends to bring out critics, and the backlash against the Ice Bucketeers was prompt and nasty, including questions about the wisdom of wasting vast amounts of water when it is in such short supply elsewhere in the world, and quips about the fact that people could be donating to charity without shocking their system with ice. This type of sharing/challenging/posting activism always carries the risk of being empty, if those taking part are simply doing the visible part of the challenge and not following through with a donation - the term “slacktivism” has been coined for this behaviour. When it comes down to it, our hats should go off to everyone who has taken up the challenge and donated to charities devoted to supporting ALS research.Nearly $11 million had been raised by ALS Canada as of press time, surpassing the organization's $10 million goal.Clearly, at least a fair number of those who accepted the challenge did follow through, and put their money where their buckets were.Furthermore, a whole lot more people know what al mass ee Teg 5 BYP Tw Hdl.§ = CHANTAL.HORTOP@TC.TC KATIE.MARTINE@TC.TC ALS is following the social media hype than did before, and you can't knock a little education.Another point that has been raised about the challenge is that perhaps ALS is not the cause which most needs our attention and funds. As Scott Gilmore said in a recent article in Maclean's: ALS research is not an especially great need in public health .[it] is not even close to the top 20 most fatal diseases according to StatsCan .Second, it is already extremely well funded .last year ALS killed 6,849 people in the US, and attracted $23 million for research (a ratio of $3,382 per death).Heart disease, by contrast, killed 596,577 but only raised $54 million (a paltry sum of $90 per death). If you want your donation to make the biggest difference, fund the diseases that need the most money” While this is all well and good, and perhaps we should try to make as much difference as we can to the most urgent causes, we cannot dismiss the good that the influx of funds may do for ALS research, and to someone with a loved one who is suffering from the disease, that is priceless. The critics of the campaign should not be ignored either, though, perhaps their objections will be heard by some, and some extra funds will be poured into heart disease research. As it stands though, this viral fundraising campaign has beaten the pants off anything else seen in recent years, and proves once again, the power that social media has taken onin our lives.FROM THE GLEANER ARCHIVES 120 YEARS AGO September 6, 1894 HUNTINGDON The entertainment given on Friday and Saturday nights, under the auspices of the lacrosse club, were the best Gleaner.60 YEARS AGO September 1, 1954 Just before schools closed for the summer vacation period, commissioners from the various school boards, both Protestant and Catholic, met at Ormstown to discuss what should be done relative to enforcing regulations with respect to school buses. He explained that he had invited police officers to help in giving information as to the law and how they were prepared to see that it is carried out.Mr.Somerville also gave his assurance of help and support in whatever he could do.A copy of suggested change in the present wording of the law was handed to all in attendance and an opinion was asked regarding it.After consideration and reading of the original law; it was felt that the original law covered the subject except that it did not specify school buses. It was emphatically decided that all school buses should carry some kind of stop equipment. The Ormstown school showed one of their buses equipped with a metal sign that could be swung out when the driver stopped his bus.The general opinion seemed to be that flasher signs with a red light and the word Accomplishments shine at 4-H Achievement Day The Ormstown 4-H held its annual achievement for nearly 50 years of church services Micheline Mainville Latreille has been inducted as a member of the Diocesan Order of Merit by the Diocèse de Valleyfield for her many years of playing the organ at St.Joseph’s Catholic Church in Huntingdon. She couldn’t remember exactly when she had been named the official organist there, but she knew it was close to 50 years ago.CHANTAL HORTOP chantal.hortop@tc.tc Fifty years is impressive enough, but Latreille’s musical past extends much further.“My father was the choirmaster in Sainte-Barbe,” she says, explaining that she began learning music because of him, and began playing the organ at age 14.Since then, “I've never really stopped,” she says.Latreille was quick to point out that all of her musical education took place right in Huntingdon, through the church. She SARACENS RFC says that many people think she studied in Montreal, but in fact, she only when there for exams.“When I was advanced enough, I was studying and teaching at the same time.” Latreille still teaches, with a group of pupils set to begin the fall 2014 session shortly.Over the years, she has also been deeply involved with the church choir, even running a choir herself for some time. When the time came for concerts, it was “a lot of work,” she says, but their hard work clearly paid off, with as many as 500 people coming to see some of their concerts.Though music is still a large part of her life, Latreille says she no longer hears well enough to be able to play organ with the choir, so “I decided to give up my place” When she plays alone, she says, there's “no problem,” but “I've had to retire, since I've become too deaf to follow the choir” Her attitude remains consecutive year. The Saracens started off extremely strong with quick offensive play and support in rucks and on defense. The women, who hail from across the Haut Saint-Laurent region, fought aggressively for the title, quickly putting two tries on the board. It was a hot day, and they played at the peak of the heat, on a field which left something to be desired - dust clouds rose up several times, from barren patches, but it did not overly affect visibility for players.Tries for the Saracens were scored by Erika Scott (2), and Tasha Duncan. All three conversions were made by Cindel Chartrand, as well as a penalty kick. While the opponents battled hard for the full 80 minutes, the Saracens only allowed two tries against.Captain Cindel Chartrand was named Player of the Match by the referees. The championship win follows a fantastic season for the ladies, despite losing many veterans since the previous season. The ladies regular season record was nine wins and only one loss, with 484 points scored over the ten games. They beat the Hull Volants in the semi-finals to advance to the finals.Coaches Stephen Kaplan and Don Hutton invested a great deal of time the choir members who, over the years have become “like brothers and sisters.” Though the passing of time has meant changes, Latreille says plainly, “I have always made music,” and it is clear that it will always be a part of her life.and energy in this team over the season, pushing its members to do better every week. The next thing for the Saracens will be a fundraising bazaar during Ormstown'’s garage sale weekend. We will be set up at the Rec Centre (87 rue Roy) from 9-4 on September 6, and will have a bake sale in addition to the garage sale items. The public can rent tables for $25 for their own garage sale (contact o.saracens.rfc@gmail.com) or can donate items to the Saracens for their fundraiser, to help support the growth of rugby in the community.Submitted by Caitlin HIKING Trek to becoming an Adirondack 46er Lexie Tucker, 23, is a very goal- oriented person who likes to have tangible results. This trait has led her to embark upon challenging herself to hike the 46 highest peaks in the Adirondacks—all the mountains surpassing 4000 feet.Once she completes them, she will be able to register to become part of an elite club of people who have also completed the challenge known as “Adirondack 46ers.” KATIE MARTIN katie.martin@tc tc She began her challenge last fall and has gradually been chipping away at getting closer to her goal.Climbing Mount Colden on Wednesday, August 20, marked the completion of her fourteenth high peak. She is now 30 per cent of her way through the challenge. She says of the endeavor: “It’s [neat] because it’s a long term goal, but each mountain in itself is a goal too.” Already, she can’t help but envision what the 46th climb will be like. She has decided to save one of the ‘easier’ mountains for last saying that she will be so excited that shell just want to run all the way up it.The terrain of the trails varies from flat at times to rugged and rocky with a steep incline at others so the categorization of ‘easy’is a rather generous one. When she first decided to take on the challenge, she immediately ordered the guide book and map which are now starting to be quite worn from use.She has the 46 highlighted in red on the map.Upon doing more research into the topic, she found out that measuring techniques and technology have improved and revealed that several of the mountains on the list of 46 come up just shy of 4000 feet, while others that were thought to be lower actually measure 4000 feet or more.To do a thorough job, she would like to climb these as well.Even though most of the trails are marked there are still occasional accidental slip ups no matter how alert you remain.Sometimes accidentally going astray has only been a minor inconvenience, while others it has thrown her off significantly Lexie has quickly developed the habit of regularly consulting both the map and guidebook, but even so as I joined her for her Colden hike, we ended up on a 30 minute trek in the wrong direction.Another thing she has quickly learned is to always make the smart decision. She recalls one time she and her friend pushed themselves too far and consequently only ended up only getting back to their car at 11:00 p.m.They were prepared to hike in the dark if they needed to, but it increases the risk factor in getting hurt and is something Lexie tries to avoid. The bad decision was that they decided to hike to another peak that day, after already having done two. From the research she’s done on the topic, she’s found that most injuries happen during the descent because you're tired and thus not as vigilant and careful as you were during the ascent. The more you push the limits, the more likely an accident or injury will occur. Now, she always airs on the side of caution and makes the smart decision rather than taking chances and is sure to remain vigilant during the descent as well.Though the map and guidebook are helpful, Lexie has found that reading the personal anecdotes of others helpful in gathering information about what to expect from certain peaks. One way she does this is through reading blogs CHATEAUGUAY VALLEY ANTIQUE ASSOCIATION Crowds flock to Rockburn to see tractors and treasures A “tremendous” turnout was the story of this year’s Chateauguay Valley Antique Association Antique Show and Tractor Pull, says René Labelle, president of the association.Approximately 3000 people passed through the gates over two days, with a particularly impressive attendance at the tractor pull on Saturday.CHANTAL HORTOP chantal.hortop@tc.tc Each year at the annual event, held this year on August 23 and 24, they “keep increasing [in terms of] the numbers coming,” says Labelle, joking that they're not sure how much more they might like to see it grow.He says that everyone did a “tremendous job” getting everything ready, and for the various elements of the displays, “making it look just like a homestead.” Not only are the crowds growing, there continues to be more and more to see at the Rennie Farm in Rockburn.Labelle says that he had plenty of positive feedback, and that many people said they “could barely get to see everything in one day” — fortunately the event runs over two days. The tractor pull drew a large crowd, and everything went “extremely well,” says Denis Faubert, one of the organizers.“The weather was great and there were people everywhere.” There were 108 hooks involving about 50 tractors, Faubert says, and perhaps most importantly, “lots of volunteers,” which made everything run smoothly.Apart from the tractor pull, there were countless pieces of antique machinery, household goods, clothing, tools, vehicles and many other article too numerous to list on display throughout the farm. There was also a consignment auction, a flea market, a breakfast and church service, a question-and-answer period with former snowmobile racers and agricultural demonstrations throughout the weekend.“It was a good show all around,” says Labelle.I i Lexie Tucker has challenged herself to hike the 46 highest peaks in the Adirondacks—all the mountains surpassing 4000 feet.PHOTO PROVIDED people have written on the subject. The stories are entertaining, but also give her a more detailed account of what to expect. This has enticed her to start her own blog, https://astoryasummit.word- press.com/, to recount her adventures and hopefully have her stories be of use to others embarking on the quest.Lexie also gains new knowledge with each hike she completes, whether from things she notices on her own or from encounters with other hikers in the process of completing the 46.During the Colden hike, one group gave her a lot of helpful advice for conquering some of the more daunting peaks. When she first started out, she didn't have any particular time frame in mind, but now she has made up her mind and is aiming to complete the challenge within two years. In the nearer future, she is hoping to up the ante by upgrading her day hikes to overnight camping excursions so that she can cover more territory in a shorter period of time.Though she had already been contemplating camping and purchased a bear canister (to protect food from bears while camping), coming across so many campers and hearing stories from some had her itching to get planning a camping trip sooner rather than later.
