the forthcoming provincial elections on May 15th, next, the Quebec Provincial Branch of the Dominion Alliance for the Suppreseion of the Liquor Traffic earnestly appeals to the electors of all parties to immediately interest themselves in securing the nomination by their respective Conventions of such candidates only as may be thoroughly in favor of progressive and restrictive Temperance Legislation and the strict enforcement of all laws relating to the liquor traffic.It has often been found that the protests of temperance electors have resulted in the names of pro-liquor candidates being dropped and those of satisfactory temperance candidates being substituted.Strong demands are being made by the liguor interests for the repeal of the early closing law recently enacted by the Gouin Government and which has already bad such eplendid results.It is imperative, therefore, that only such candidates as can be trusted to sustain the early Olosing Law should have the support of pla Handel’s Largo most effectively, violin and piano, it serving as a prelude.Prof.Dubson made the opening prayer, a strong, sympathetic appeal, the pleader seeming to fully understand the needs of the hour, and one could but feel that every heart was with him in bis prayer.‘Abide with Me” was eung by the audience, fully 400 voices joining.The speakers of the evening were: Mr.Jamee F.Telford, Reverends H.F.Hallett, W.B, Jamieson and F.H.Cole, Mr.Dobson closing the addresses most effectively.The trend of the addresses was towards the withholding of criticism and the acceptance of the disaster as the price we must pay to learn the facts of the omnipotence, omnipresence and omniscience of our God.Mise Pierce sang ‘Crossing the Bar" most beautifully, making its story so defluite to all, the occasion gave it a new meaning.Miss Mildred Corning read: “He Giveth His Beloved Sleep.” What could be more appropriate?The in- tarpretation pleased everybody, it was ne.The singing of that grand sea hymn, “The Sailor,” by the audience was made, by the fact that our villages have many friends just returning from abroad, a most effective feature of the evening's service; it gave all the power to clothe it with ite fullest and richest meaning.In the singing of the hymna everybody seemed to forget themselves and made it an opportunity for real praise.At the close when the hymp, ‘Nearer My God to Thee’ was sung, all seemed to realize that it was the last notes of the band on the Titanic and the last words of the 1600 or more who went down with the vessel.It was an unusual scene, posslbly one of a lifetime, and as we looked into the faces of the audience, all were serious and kind and could not go from the gathering and ite influences without being better men and women, and better boys and girle.We get our greatest uplift when we stand together for the common good, irrespective of creed or race, and we were led to think of the possibilities for good resting with us as a community if we always ‘‘pulled together” in all things ae in life’s shadows.Do we forget when ‘‘all is amooth eail- ing?” Gray Leaved Plants.Next to green, gray is the restfullest and more satisfactory color to be had in follage.We now have so many tardy plants with gray foliage that we can choose one for each month of bloom and color of flower.Among them are the silvery milfoit, golddust, the white and purple rock.cress, the woolly leaved chickweed, many hardy pinks, Siebold’s day Mly.ton, woundwort and woolly thyme.Somo of these are decidedly silvery Others incline to a blue cast which is most pronounced in the globethisties and seahollies, Such colors are so unusual in nature that it is easy to over do them in gardens.—Country Life in America.Bank of Japan.| Japan, the country that is not bound by traditions in her search for the best manner of doing things, has tried our national bank plan, and.finding it not at all satisfactory, has adoptec the European plan of the central bank.The Bank of Japan fs capitalized at $15,000,000.Its circulation at present is more than $170,000.000, and its deposits exceed $200,000, 000.It issues all the notes of the country and thus controls the currency situation.Besides the Bank of Japan there are other semi-official banks filling various specific functions for the government.Town's Herring Brook Brewster, Mass, owns a herring brook, and at the town meeting every year, following an old custom a committee Is elected by ballot to catch end from inquiries which the writer bes made there does not seem to be much doubt jn officsat circles that quite a large pumber of men are going about posing as detectives and obtaining money by such pretences.They go to work in much the same acter of à man Or woman.and thea endeavour to come to terms with their victims by promising to withhold their warrant for arrest and “squaring” the matter.In the majority of cases it le generally ignorant people, who do aot stop to ask the “detective” to produce the warrant, or who forget that a detective, by so acting, renders himself liable to the meverest punishment, who are the usual victims, although at times these bogus detectives fly to higher game.Posing as Police Officers.Last year, for instance, the case came to light of a wealthy manu- Cacturer, son had led a wild fe while in London and forged a cheque for $260, paying®a man whom te belloved to be from Scotland Yard, | and who made out that he held a warrant for the son's arrest, $2000 to Teport that the boy had fled the country.The “detective” called on the father, sald that he underetood the son was hiding in the neighbour food, and that he would like the father's help to execute the warrant.Not doubting the man’s word, the father, to hush up tne matter, suggested that he should pay the de- tootive a price to go back to London and state that he had failed to find the oulprit.Two thousand dollars was the price agreed upon and it was oot until the father had an official visit from Scotland Yard in regard to the matter that he learned how he had been victimized.Quite recently a couple of men wore heavily fined for representing themselves as police officers and threatening another man with errest on account of a cheque ‘which they said had been dishonoured because of the false signature; while a parti- ovlerly mean trick was played upon & widow some months ago whem a man called and said that he held a warrant for the arrest of her son, who was a sallor, for taking part in an alleged robbery of goods from the dockyard.The mother was frightened, and, knowing that her son was to sail in a few hours, parted with $76 to induce the “detective” to hold up the warrant until he had eaffed.The “detective” knew that the son would not return home again before he sailed, and relied on this fact to extort money from the widow, who found out the trick when she read of the man being sentenced to imprisonment for trying a sirhilar dodge in another part of the town.The Worst Feature, Perhaps the worst feature of this bogus detective business has recently been exposed in the English law counts.Cases are known of men who set up as private Inquiry agents who have no qualifications for such work, and who simply announce themselves as such in order to acquire knowledge from those who seek their services, afterwards using this knowledge to extort money from their victims.A couple of months ago, for instance, a lady who wished to relieve herself of the attentions of a blackmailer who had learned a secret of her past life and was continually worrying her for momey, rashly confided her troubles to one of these bogus detectives, whose advertisement she had seen in a certain paper.He had no sooner learned all the circumstances of the case than he, too, after finding that ehe would pay no more money until he had achieved some result, turned round and demanded a large sum for keeping his mouth shut regarding the secret she had confided to him.Luckily, she had the cobrage to go to the police about the matter, with the result that the scoundrel quickly fled the country.Sonnds of the Saw “Oil can see red rowses bloomin'!” sang the street vocalist, and he was about to broach the second spasm when a carpenter's apprentice beckoned him to his eide.“TA! give ÿou tuppenca” he declared, “if you'll stay in this shed and sing t1M I come back.I'm dying for a drink of milk.” And the songster assented.Soon the apprentice reappeared, and paid over the twopence.“I s'pose”’ sald the vocalist, "that my voice is about the same as yours, an' you thought your boss wouldn't know the difference—eh?” The other looked at him indignantly, and then repHed:— “Your voice the same as mine! Butchers and Farmers SEPT CANNOT STAND 70 Losa SE HEL and cutting out deale ory’ profite.we offer © 1 ea all consignments free of THE CHILD MIND Results ef an Investigation Inte infant Mental Processes.Of forty-eight children, says BStan- ley Hall, twenty believed the sun, moon and stars to live, sixteen thought flowers could feel, and fifteen that dolls would feel pain if burnt The sky was found the chief fleld in which the children exercised their philosophic minds.About three-quar- tors of them thought the worid a plain with the sky like a bowl turned over it, sometimes believing that it was ot such thin texture that one could eas- fly break through, though so large -that much floor sweeping was necessary in heaven.The sun may enter the ground when it sets, but half oil the children thought that at night 1t rolls or flies away, or is blown, or walks, or God pulls it higner up out of sight, taking it up into heaven, according to some, putting it to bed, and even taking oft its clothes and putting them on again in the morning, or again, it is belleved to lie under the trees at night and the angels mind it.God, of whom children always hear so much, plays a very large part in these conceptions, and is made directly responsible for al cosmic phenomena.Thus thunder to thesé American children was God groaning or kicking or rolling barrels about, or turning a big handle, or grinding snow or breaking something, or rattling a big hammer, while the lightning was due to God putting his finger 4 out, or turning the gas on quick, or striking matches, or setting paper on fire.According to Boston children, God 1s a big, perhaps a blue man, to be seen in the sky, on the clouds, in church, or even in the streets.They declare that God comes to see them sometimes, and they have seen um anter the gate.He makes lamps, ba- bles, dogs, trees, money, etc., and the angels work for him.He looks like a priest or a teacher or papa, and the children like to look at him; a few would themselves like to be God.His house in the sky may be made of stone or brick; birds, children and Santa Claus live with God.Birds and beasts, their food and their furniture as Burnham points out, all talk to children when the dew 8 on the grass ‘“‘the grass is crying,” the stars are candles or lamps, perhaps cinders from God's stove, butterflies are flying pansies, icicles are Christmas candy.Children have im- sginary play—brothers and sisters and friends, with whom they talk.Sometimes God talks with them.Even the prosiest things are vivified; the track: of dirty feet on the floor are flowers; a creaking chair talks; the shoemaker nai!s are children whom he is driving to school.SELF-SATISFIED YANKEES \\ Briton Declares We Think We Have .A Monopoly of Freedom.A carping Briton by tne name ot Whibley seems to be quite stirred up’ over the quality of the American brand of liberty and of patriotism.“Liberty” says he in the course ot a few somewhat heated and overcapitalized remarks, in Blackwoou s magazine, *is a thing which no one in America can escape.The old inhabitant smiles with satisfaction as he murmurs the familiar word.At every turn it is clubbed into the unsuspecting visitor.“If an aspirant to the citizenship of the republic declined to be free he would doubtless be thrown into a dungeon, fettered and manacled, until he consented to accept the precious boon.“You cannot plekK up a newspaper without being reminded that liberty is the exclusive possession of the United States.The word, if not the quality, 1s the commonplace of American history.It looks out upon you —the word again, not the quality — svery hoarding.It is uttered in ev sry discourse, but the truth is that American liberty is the mere creature of rhetoric.“America’s view of patriotism is distinguished by the same ingenious exaggeration as her view of liberty.She has as little doubt of her grandeur as of her freedom.She is in brief, God's own country and in her esteem Columbus was no mere earthly explorer; he was the authentic discoverer of the promised land.“Neither argument nor experience will ever shake the American's confidence in his noble destiny.On all other questions uncertainty is possible.It is not possible to discuss America’s supremacy.In arms as in arts the United States Is unrivalled.It alone has been permitted to combine material with moral progress.It alone has solved the intricate problems of life and politics.“It has the biggest houses, the bes: Government, and the purest law that the world has ever known.Perfect freedom is its exclusive privilege, as skyscrapers and elevated rallways tre its exclusive possessions.Its wu sersitles surpass Oxford, Cambridge, Paris and Leipzig in learning as its churches surpass the churches of the Old World in the proper understanding of theology.In brief, to use its own phrase America is ‘It’ the sole home of the good and great.” A lot of men who bave abounding faith In themselves never get energy enough to muster up the work thai ought to go with it.re The man who watches the clock most is usually the man who complains loudest about the size of his pay envelope.WAYS OF SAVING WASTE, Skimming River for'a Living—Fish- ermen Who Net Corks.Skimming a river for a living may be said to be one of the most strike ing examples of the utilization of waste.This is done in Paris.There is one individual, at least, in the French capital who makes it his daily business to skim the Seine.Ha is out at early morning in an old flat bottomed boat, armed with a skimming pan.With this he skims off the surface of the river the grease which collects there during the night, ana which be disposes of to a soap factory.Generally he makes a quarter or 80 by his morning’s work, which epables him to live.In Paris also there are a number of people who make a living out ot waste corks, which they fisn from the Seine.They collect on the river bank at daybreak.each with a short pole, at the end of which is a small improvised net.They set to work to gather in the floating corks, subsequently selling them to the cork merchants in the neighborhood.There are about a score or so of these cork fishermen, who have formed themselves into a sort of craft and who guard their interests jealously.If they catch sight of a mranger netting corks they fall on him in a body.Only recently the police rescued one of these novices barely in time to save | his life.The sweepings of a floor might well be considered as 80 much waste; yet, through a fire in London the other day, which consumed a quantity of sweepings stored in the basement, a certain firm lost several thousand dollars.The heap of dust and rubbish contained silver fillings, which it was Intended to extract later on.This 18 done regularly at all works where silver or gold is used.In gold reffhers’ premises even the soot in the chimneys is not allowed to be treated as waste.It is found to contain minute particles of the precious metal, which are far too valuable to be lost.In places where sheep are bred extensively one frequently sees little bits of wool adhering to briers as waste.From such wool rubbish, whether coming from sheep or goats, valuable oil is now extracted.INSECTS THAT ARE TIPPLERS.Flowers and Blossoms That Have an Intoxicating Effect on Flies.It 18 not very obvious, from the human point of view, why the ivy should be called the plant of Bacchus, since no wine fs made from its berries.Entomologists, however, have found that its flowers make a veritable Bacchanalian festival for a number of insects.They are wont to salty forth at night with lanterns to capture the intoxicated moths that crowd around the greenish blossoms.When the wiMow is in bloom they find a similar scene of dissipation around its yellow catkins.The tippling insect may be used to point a moral by the temperance lecturer, says the London Globe, for rum not infrequently leads to its ruin.A distinguished entomwlogist after giving a recipe for the mixture for sugaring trees for moths—which ineluded heer — said: “Add some Jamaica rum just before using; it is the rum which attracts them.” After sipping this mixture the moths and butterflies fall from the tree intoxicated.If the entomologist is not thcre to capture them by and by they recover and get up again for another dip.There Is a fly so addicted to wine that Linnaeus named it the cellar fly, which appellation Kirby changed to the more appropriate one of the cellar wine drinker.This latter dls tinguished entomologist writes of it thus: “The larva of this little fly, whose economy, as I can witness from my own observations, disdains to feed on anything but wine or beer, which lke Boniface in the play it may be sald both to eat and drink, though, unlike its toping counterpart, indifferent to the age of the liquor, which, whether sweet or sour, js equally acceptable.” Kirby, who writes the above, does not, nevertheless, exonerate adult flies from a partiality for the cup that cheers.“Tnat active little fly,” he writes, “now an unbidden guest at your table, whose delicate palate sel ects your choicest viands, one while extending his proboscis to the margin of a drop of wine and then gayly flying to take a more solia repast from a pear or a peach.” And there is another insect—a moth—which also loves the cellar and the wine bottle.But, strange to say, it takes its liquor as a mere flavoring to the cork on which it really feeds; the larva, that ls to say.pastures on the corks of wine bottles, sometimes causing the wine to run out.The mou belongs to that troublesome family which works such destruction in clothes ana furs, Ways of French Mechanics.All mecnanics in France are obliged to serve an apprenticeship of from two to three years, during half of which period, at least, tney receive no wages and must board themselves.In addition to this each one must give up two years of his life for military service, for which he receives I cent a day and board and clothes.It wit be seen that every mechanic in France must expend four or five years of his life without wages before he is pre pared to earn from 97 cents to $1.1: a day.I CAR LOAD OF RANGES AND HEATERS AT HUNT'S HARDWARE STORE Buying by the car load enables us to carry the stock and sell at the right price.Our stock is made us of the following: Monarch Peninsular Ranges, Magee Ranges, Heola, Mages, Kelsey and @lenwood Hot Air Furnaces, and a Full Line of Steam and Hot Water Heaters.NEW PERFECTION BLUE FLAME KEROSENE COOKING RANGES NEW WRINKLES: DOUBLELINED AND DOUBLESEAMED DAYLIGHT OVENS You can't fool the cook when she uses this stove, for she can see all that is going on in the oven she won't have to open the oven door and consequently the loaf or roast will go right on browning, ad be taken out when done.There is nothing like really seeing what's doing in the oven.The Iceman is now coming;
