DUBLIN, April 1).There appears to be some blighting curse over Irish industry, whaisver may be the cause. The latest collapse has been thal of the Mining Company of Ireland, which was founded nearly sevenly years ago with the object of developing the mineral resources of the country. It nas had a long, tlickering oxis- tence, and after a stubborn struggle has succumbed to circumstances. The Company started with a capital of £500,000, and mining operations were euerygetically carried on In various parts of hreland, but culefly in Wicklow and Waterford, with fair success, until foreign compet- tion became too stroug, and of late years work has ouly been carried on lu 8 very desultory sort of way. Now, the whole thing has been wound up, and one mil}, with buildings and machinery costing £20,000 or Bo, was sold for Lou, PARNELL'S ESTATE.The Irish Court of Probate has ordered the English letters of administration of the late Mr.Parnell’s personal estate to be seaied for this country.Mr.Parnell died intestate, and the administration has been granted to Mrs.(Catherine Parnell, “the lawful widow and relict of tho intestate.” The gross personal estate is entered for prohate purposes at £11,774.The personal assols In Ireland included In the above sum are valued at £6074.The terms of the compromise arranged in the l’arnell- Wood case are as follows: Mra, I’arnell gets the entire free-hold property in Gloucestershire and Suffolk. She also gets half of the £140,» 090, but she nas to share it with her other” husband, Captain O'Shea. On Lhe deaths of Mrs, Parnell and Captain O'Shea the money will be divided between the children of their marriage. The legal expenses iu the case have been something tremendous, the defendant having incurrad at least £10,000 in costs.Sir Charles lusssll, Sir Richard Webstor, Sir Henry James, and Sir Edward Clarke oach received a fee of one thousand pounds.bOLLI® PRESS AMALGAMATION, The amalgamation of The National Press and The Freeman's Juwrnal is a fav accompa, and the former bitter foes are now one.The partnersinp was a necessity,as one or both of the journals must have gone down. The circulation of the old kreemun had ducreased very much, and the only hope was to join its opponent. The kreeman has for its motto the words “Ireland a Nation.” Some one has suggested Lhat the Areeman-Presa should adopt as a motto, *1'o one thing constant pever.” The Parneliite paper, The drish Independent, is doing very weil and looks like weathering out the storm.FATHER O'FLYNN'S" RECORD.Great Was the wailing and gnashing of teeth last I'riday when the news arrived here that the Liverpool Grand National had been caplured by a nog thal was Hibernian in name only. The Irish division were sure that the winner would turn up in one of the candidates sent over from this land of steaplechesers, hut it did not come off, The winner, “Father O'l'lyun,”’ is a very small horse—~in tact, only a pony-but he hos great strength and endurance, und is a rare goud jumper. The fact that “Civister” and “Tex, the two top weights, secared exactly the same expressing respect and attachment to the house ot Clapcarty, and hoping his lordship would nid them in developing the trade ot the town and county.Lord Clan- carty made à most pithy speech, declaring his intention of settling down into à ‘rale” Irish country gentleman.Afterwards the Countess (“Bolle Bilton’) presented the hia- toric twins, Lord Kileconnell and the Hon, F.- Le when the jury returned a verdict of guilty on all the counts.Judgmeul was reserved pending tne settlement of some legal points which were raised by the prisoner's counsel. The case disclosed circumstances reminding ons very much of an Irish editivn of Dotheboys Hall, and the greatest indignation is felt against the reverend prisoner tor his cruelly neglectful treal- ment of the poor waifs of society placed under his not too tender care.Everything goes tu show how shamefully he fullitied the mission to which he professediy devoted himself, The character oi the chiluren whom Mr.Cotton took under his control made his duty 1f possible mure onerous and welgnhty than if the orvhanage why an ordinary one, A estrone plea to tte charita- Lia and benevolent was made in behaif of tke American Company Has Secured Contro) of the letmnd, But the Report is Denied.NEw YORK, April 21.— A correspondent of the Herald at Amsterdain telegraphs as follows: ‘Information bas reached me in re- ard Lo one of the most sensational and remarkable international transactions which have been Lnown for many years, and which cannot fall to make a great stir io England and Germany, The transaction consists of the virtual sale of the republic of San Domingo to a private company in the Unified States, Lhe sum agreed upon being fixed at $3,600,000 in five per cent.debentures gecured on the revenue from tobacco, ete. This concession has been sold by Méspri Westerndort, the well-known bankers of iis city apd the representatives of the San Domingo bondholders. At presant nothing remaius but the signatures of the American representatives to Sumpiete the transaction and secure to the United States this most important harbor and ooaling station. The holder of this concession practically rules the republic, because he pays the officials and receives the revenue from the tobacco monopoly.A striking feature, however, is the statement which was made that the scheme has been approved and endorsed by Secretary Blaine, and is supported by Messrs.Gould and D.Ogden Milis. It isalso stated that those gentlemen are going to spring it upon the United States as a campaign weapon, somewhal upon the sane lines as those on which Beacons- fiold used his success in securing control of the Suez Canal for England. The transaction has been rushed through with unprecedented rapidity, all the details having been arranged within fourteen days.Baron von Olegar, the London company’s promoter, with his solicitor, Walton Thomas, is awalt- ing the arrival of the American signatures, Tle tormer does not deny that the so-called private company is virtually the United states Government, which in this manner bas become now and for ever the master of Sau Domingo. One of the most active negotiators has heen Mr.Isaac, son of the late Lord Mayor of London. The assistant Becretary of State, Mr.Wharton, sald at Washington yesterday that he had never heard of the matter, and 80 did the acting Secretary of the Navy, Mr.Soley, and other department chiefs.George Gould sald he was sure his father had never heard of such a plan and would not join in it it it had been proposed to bim.D.O.Mills said: I never heard of sucha scheme, Consul M of Ban Domingo and Consul General Haustedt ot Hayti both said the story of the purchase was new Lo them and that such a plan could not have been considered, for no man or party could agree to sell the island. That could only be done by a vote of all the people and such a vote had not been aske The Herald says euitorially that the story may not be true and that it 18 published with due reserve.BFRLIN, April 21.— The United States Minister, Mr.Phelps, yesterday gave an emphatic and positive denial to the rumors that he had been meddiing in Ban Domingo matters compulsory Insurance agrainstold age and inlirraity-—passe in June, 1889—completes the programme ol legisiation for improving the condition of the working classes which was set forth in the imperial rescript of the 17th of November, 1881.It affects a portion of the popu lation numbering more than 13,000,000 giving thew au inalianahle legal claim to support in cases of infirmity and in old age.The insurance is compulsory in all industrial occupations upon persons of both sexes over sixteen years of age.Clerks, trade employees, and tradesmen's apprentices who do not earn more than one hundred pounds per annum also partielpate; but, oddiy enough, assistants and apprentices in apothecaries’ shops are excluded.Exemption froin compulsory insurance 1s granted to persons who work for food, clothes, and lodging only, and who receive no pay, or who are only in temporary employment. The pension for old age varies from £5 6s.4d.to £9 118.per annum, and is granted to every insured person who has completed the seventieth year ol his age, irrespective of bis ability to earn a livellhvod, provided that he uoes not already draw a pension for mflrmity. The latter ranges from £5 lla, to over £20, and is given, irrespective of age, to any parson who js permanently incapacitated from earning his living. The pension can be refused if the infirmity has been brought on wilfully or in the act of committing a crime.A person {8 considered inftrm if unable to earn inoro than about one-third of his usual wage.Habitual drunkards may be made to receive their pensions entirely in kind.In such cases the pension is paid to the parish authorities, who supply the person concerped with his food, clothing, ete.In order to vstablish à claim to à pension under the German law, contributions, regulated by the amount of earnings, must be paid for a prescribed period. The means of paying pensions are obtained by fixed contrivuiions from the Imperial treasury, added to regular pay- mouls on the part of the employers and employed.bide by side with this system there continues in operation the law which cou- pels ininers Lo become members of approved friendly societies, Every After Leaving Churoh—The Latter Afterwards Arrested.A case in which cousiderable interest was taken by the members of the congregation ol BL.Gabriel's Catholic Church and the residents of St.Gabriel's Ward generally, was heard in the Recorder's Court yesterday. This was the Queen va.Patrick U' Brien, grocer. It appears that on the 6th of this month, as the congregation were coming from Lhe church, where & mission had beeu HOINE OL, 8 altercation arose between Ald.Tansey and Mr.O'Brien, the result of which wag that the former had Mr.O'Brien arrested a day or two ugo, on a charge of loitering and obstructing the sidewalk, The first witness was Ald.Tansey.He stated that he was leaving church on the “venting of April 6, when he was accosted by prisoner, who kept saying, “This 1s not the Lec order's Court, Tausey, nor the He- Witness told him Lu go on and not uke a Scene; Lut prisoner persisted, © shouting aloud and shakiug his fist 11 wit- Less’ face.Wilness dud not have him arrested al the time, because he wished to wait until the mission and Lent wers over.Witness thought that the meaning of the allusions to Lhe Recorder's Court was that prisouer had had two boys arrested some time previously tor breaking his window, and witness had interceded with His Honor and got the case settled. In cross-examina- tive, withess denied that apy reference hag bean mude in the church that night to the trouble between the wardens and the syndics; but reterence had been nade to the dif- Terence between the parish priest and the syndics.Jas, Rogers, the next witness, gave somewhat simliar evidence.Messrs.Thos, Collins, Thomas Cahill and John Colfer were Bleu examined for the prosecution.Mr.Coiler was there at the finish. When Le came Lo the corner he HEARD BOME LOUD NOISE and coming down was jammed up against a post.Mr l'ansey was a lew feet off and the gentleman whom he believed to be Mr, O'Brien had his hand up, saying something which Le did not remember,” Mr.lausey answered In a moderate tone and told vrisoner not to use his .name; but Lo move on, Witness thought the way things were going that it would be worse tian a talking affair. He told Mr.Tansey that the Lest thing he ovutd do was to go home, Mr.Tansey then said he would try to get a policeman.Several witnesses were examined ror the defence, of whom the most important was Mr.Patrick Shea, who was bresent during the whole occurrence and Who slated that the remarks of Mr, O Brien were not addressed to Mr.Tansey atall in the first Instance, Another witness, James 5 Patrick, stated that affair was simply an ‘’argument” Other witnesses said It was no uncom- mou thing for the erowd to stand around talking outside the church. The syndics themselves often held meetings at the corner of the street.Mr.Purcell then addressed the court on behalf of the pris.ouer.He thought the whole matter a very trifling affuir; but contended that it was Ald.Tansey who was the cause, the innocent cause, perhaps, of whatever gisturb- ance had occurred. He asked for a dismissal.Mr.Forget, clerk of the court, then addressed the court, after which his Honor proceeded to dellver judgment. He regret ted the shair very much; both Mr.Tansey and Mr.O Rrien were blghiy respectable citizens: that was proved by the fact that they were regular attendants at chureh; aud here his Honor enmolimented his Irish Catnolie fellow-citizens upon the excellent example they showed their French Canadian Lrethren in that respect. With regard to the charge againet Mr.O'Brien, His Honor thought he could not dismiss it} Lut he would say that he considered Ald, Tansey equally calpable in the matter.Aid.‘Tansey was not on bis trial.however.lits Honor then announced that he would Queen va.O’Brien would very much have liked to hear His Honor touch upon the manner and subsequent proceedings in the matter of Mr.O'Brien's arrest.hy was it necessary to take Mr, O'Brien out of bed at ten o'clock at night? Then to refuse $200 bail, keep Mr, O'Brien in a cell tiil 1 a.m., and then allow the prisoner to go home without requiring any bail at all.Had these points been explained away, more importance would have attached, In my opinion, to His Honor's remarks in which he urged that a serious disturbance might have arisen out of the remark, mado by Mr, O’Brien, which led to his arrest. To me it looked like “straining at a gnat and swallowing a camel.” CITIZEN.LECTURE AND PIANO RECITAL.Mr, Frederic Boscovitz at Association Hall, Fifteen years ago, Mr, Frederic Boscovitz was for a season one of the lions of Montreal, his brilliant performances upon the piano having galned for him hosts of admirers It was, therefore, somewhat strange that a larger audience did not greet him upon his reappearance last evening in the Association Hall, It may be that a new weneration of concert goers has grown up whicn knew not Boscovitz in its youth.trifle daunted, it may be, as accustomed to large "Toronto audiences he faced the somewhat slim body ol listeners, Mr.Boscovitz slunged Into the Allegro of a Fantaisie fercique composed in the year 1733 for the clavicemuallo. The fancy was assisted in forming an estimate of the rnerits of this fantaisie by judicious press notices from the London Times and Daily News and Mr, John Dwight of Boston, wluch were olted on the programmes tn approval of Mr.Bose covitz's performances. But it needed pot the assurances of this trio to satisly the audience that Mr, Boscovitz’s hands had lost none of their cunning, that he silll retained the ancient dash and brilliance of performance which used to carry away both connoisseur and amateur in the seventies.Since then new stars have come Into the firmament and in presence of Puderewski, D'Albert and de Pachmann, the star of Boscovitz may naturally suffer some eclipse.I3ut like all artists worthy of note, Mr, Boscovitz preserves his strong individuality. There is much to admire in tiis methods even where the judgment does not fully commend.Mr, Boscovitz excels in delicate, dainty work. His soft staccato playing, his scales in planiesimo, his performance of ornamental turns and em- bellishmentis are all most exquisitely dons.It disposed to seek for his ilmitations one might ask that the powerful left hand be curbea somewhat and that the mezzo tons, in such a selection as Schumann's slumber song.for instance, more sympathetically follow the delightful tone with which the first phrase of the subject is delivered.Mr.Boscovitz also showed that he is a good layer of Chopin's music, the Nocturne and E flat waltz being particularly well done, Now selections by Massenet, Bargiel and Godard were also performed, an an inter esting feature of the programme was the performance on an old splnnet, of Martinl’s Gavotte and John Bull's “Hunting Jig.” The latter was repeated upon the grand plano and iv must be confessed that the spinnet performance by no means contrasted unfavorably. Two Liszt selections, “La Partenza” and “Poeme L'Amour,” full of the warm coloring of the modern romantio school, were also heard and in conclusion Mr.Boscovitz played two of his own come positions in his most charming manner, first “La chant du matin” which fs quite new, and then the Queen Liizaveih minuet which every body used to play in the seventies above referred to, but which none could tnterpret with so much humoriand® grace as the Riftad composer himseif.Meeting of the City Council on Hon.Mr.Cas- grain, had promised the electors of the county of Montmorency tuat if the Government was sustained by the electors he would make it his duly Lo have myself and colleagues indicted before will be heard before tho latter gentieman, and principally tor two reasons.First, 1 was one of thnse who approved of Judge Murray's nomination as magistrate, and the public and the partisan papers would, perhaps, accuse him of partiality, and doubt hig honesty, as our adversaries 80 often do, and, secondly, I am perfectly satisfled that Judge Chauveau wiil render us full justice, while at the suine time doing his duty.” “Did you hear if summonses were issued against any other of your colieagues?” “No, I am informed that there are not, and am really netonished, for if Mr.Mercier and myself are arrcated it Is for acts for which all the members of the Government are responsible, and I cannot understand why the others aro NOT TREATED LIKE US, as we wera all jointly responsible for all that was done, as, if anything was so done, it was after the decision taken Ly the Council.” Speaking of the death of Hon.Alex.Mac- kenzle, the ex-Provineial Secretary sald it was a most sensible loss for the Liberal party. He (Mr.Langelict) was astonished at all the praise now lavished upon the e- ceased leader of the Liberal party by the Conservative press, which had during his lifetime accused him of even greater scan- aalsthan they ever brought against Hon, Mr.Mercier.“Itis evident,” he said, “that one muat die to be praised; our adversaries would Q.C,, for Mr.Pacaud pleaded to the demurrer, He sald that it was not alleged iu the declaration that the money paiu to Armstrong was not due him, the presumption cunsequently being that it was due, Even if the declaration held that action couid not have been maintained, for In the eyes of the law the Government does not change and consequently cannot invoke the nulilty of iis own acts as was done in the present instance by stating that the order-in-coun- cit upon which the payment Lo Armetroug was based was null and void.Mr.Lrouin appearing for the Government said that Armstrong had been merely a go between, and that the money had been virtually paid direct to Pacaud. And thatthe Government had a right to proceed against the person who illegally withheld the amount. He spoke at some length to demonstrate that the order-in-counclil was illegal. The case was taken en délibéré.Hop, Mr.Mercier and the Charge Agsinst Him.Hon.Mr.Mercier had sufficiently recovered trom his indispositlon the following: “Ten years ago our child was born.Having lost six children we were naturally anxious as to the health of this one. What was our dismay and sorrow to find that she was apparently doomed to tlie same fate as the others. She had little strength as à baby, and did not improve as she grew older. When about 2 1-2 years old shè began to have Fainting Spells, dropping wherever she happened to be.Af these times she would turn black and a) peared at the point of death.Doctors told us she was in a very bad way from Heart Trouble Nothing that wo gave her did any good until, in utter desperation, we began giving her Hood's Sarsaparilla. She gradually began to improve, the fainting fits became less and less frequent and finally ceased entirely, Rer general health improved until at the end of a year, having taken seven bottles, we stopped giving !t to her, At this time she was 4 years old, and, although anxious lest the troubles might return, we ceased to worry, she seemed so well. She is now 10 years old and is as Healthy and Rugged a child as you will find anywhere and has never shown any indication of & return of the heart difficulty.During tho past 6 years perhaps she has taken 3 bottles in all, we only giving it to her irregularly at times when she has complained of feeling tired in the spring and early summer.© feel that we owe & great deal Hood’s Sarsaparilla and cannot say too much in favor of- it.” Ep- wARD HILBERT, Lawrence, Mass.Hood’s Pills cure Liver lls — WITH — WATER HEATING ATTACHMENT.Water heated while
