then came Moravian, Bohemian and Hungarian barley. The most impure was Turkish rye.CEREAL EXPERIMENTS, — [Special to the Star.] Ottawa, February 27— At the Agricultural Committée this morning, Prof.|.Saunders, of the Experimental Farm, delivered an interesting dissertation- on the results of experiments- with pees oats and wheat, made at the Central Ex- perimental Farm, Ottawa.JOHN BULL-YOURE A VEBY NAUGHTY BOY ( DONT THINK~{Now.Fork Brasing Talogram.= Re € } ‘ D 7 .5 ‘ -of tbe white, but by conventrating i THERE IS - COMFORT IN THE BEST We keep a large assortment of the best makes of Corsets.Thepricesare very moderate, John Aitken & Co., 1757 Notre Dame Street.4iy cod REAL ESTATE AUCTION SALE Corner Property and Tenements.e are Instructed to sell by AUCTION PT.LESLIE, Brick GYLE AVENU ‘REET.The lot has a frontage of 50 feet and a depth of 76 feet to a lane in Houses have a rental value per annum, and form a solid, safe Investment Sale at 11 o'clock at our Rooms, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4, J.CRADOCK SIMPSON & CO, 181 St.James Street.495 REAL ESTATE.AUCTION SALE TO CLOSE AN EiTATE.We are instructed to sell the property of the Heirs Scanlon, — Ne.2234 NOTRE DAME STREET.Cadastral No.1254 of St 's Ward, Tear.of over 3800 compact and Sale atour Koems, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4, .At Eleven @'Ciock.J.CRADOCK SIMPSON & CO, 181 84.James street, ws Estate Joel Leduc. All persons having claims against the estate of the late .JOEL LEDUC, in his lifetime of Montreal, Trad re- guested to forward the same, duly certi- led to, and all persons inde e estate are llkewise requested to set- te office of F.St.Germain, Agent of the estate, No.62 St.James street, DENTS LEDUC, nt- Testamentary Executors.Montreal, 26th February, 1896.493 N ONTREAL SNOWINOE CLUB Tramp to BACK RIVER, PAU BATURDAY, “18h Feb, + EUR.Leaving Gym at 2.45pm.N Members of sister clubs are in- ted to join in this tramp., 42 E BR JARVIE Hoa Sec.COLOR IN VISION.Professor Cox's Lecture Before the W.A A.“Prof.Cox, of McGill, delivered this week's lecture before t W.A.A.last evening in the Y.M.C.‘A.music room. The sub of the paper was “Color in Vision,” and the lecturer began b ying that he would endeavor to make t ecture explanatory of the one given lasi week by Mr: Taylor. He would try to illustrate some of the principles laid down by Mr.Taylor, Which would naturally make the lecture rather fragmentary. The first illustration .was of the structure of the eye, which is the sense of color. Then followed several views of the different part of the color nerves. One interesting experiment, which Newton himself had t , was the throwing of a ray of white light on the screen.By interposing a prism a band of brilliant colors were thrown in place the colors in a small spice the light became white once more, which is one of the many ways of showing that white light is composed of seversl colors, and when one color is subtracted it leaves the eomplementary oclor. For instance, if you take away the red, the light becomes green, take away the green and the light js red.‘ This is the explanation of that advertisement of staring at a red spot for a certain length time, then looking at a white a, and seeing green The nerve, so to speak, rk fatigued, and on looking at something white we see only the complementary color, green.Professor Cox went on to say that his audience was not concerned in the origin of color, according to the evolutionists, but only in the present condition bearing on art.The theory of color sensetiveness almost universally held is that of Thomas Young, which, basing i*s:lf on experiments proving that any color sensations whatever can watched by a mixture of the three primary co red, green and violet, assumes that there are three kinds of nerves in the retina adapted to give sensations ed, green and violet; and that any perticular, ray in the spectrum by exciting these primary sensations in the proper portions, cells up the sensat of the color mixture corresponding to that ray.: These facts were then used to explain the formation of “after images.” This was illustrated by reversi the spectrum upon the screen.Artists, by painting in _‘’after-images” along the edges of hright colored "images, (nduce the impression that the objects were being viewed in bright pplight, although compelled to work with dull colors and inferior illumination.Eich of two complementary colors appeared purer and more brilliant by the others’ presence; and, in consequence, harmonious schemes of color should ist of colors which were , either complementary or the secondary colors formed by uniting the primaries in pairs. An experiment was tried, explaining the blue oalor of the sky and the blue haze seen before distant hills in countries with a clear ‘atmoaphere.A very fine psrcipative of sulphur particles was p ( a tank filled with a’clear solution and “beam m the lantera crossing through, it took on the assure blue of the sky, while the light u the screen corresponded to the sun setting in a mist.Further experiments showed tho wonderfully v.ani gorgeous efiects produced out of colorless materials by pulverized light. In one experiment crystals of bemzolc acid were exhibited in the process of formation on the screen; cach orystal, as it grew, indicating its Tesence by e spreading arrow of bril- [isnt o.lored light, tha whole appearance being not unlike the showing of the aurora in.the Polar regions. In conclusion, tbe lecturer sald that be felt art was rather out of his line, but that he h what he had.said would prove se able, an be had tried to explain the physical side of the points w been touched on in the lecture, “The.Functions and Harmony of Women with pale, colorless faces, who teel weak and discours, , will receive and pare ' both vigor by using Carter's Little Liver Pills.Special! ACADEMY.|* THE GREAT TRAGEDIENNE IN THE NEW PLAY “ IZEYL ” .There was an Immense Audience at the Initial Performance of the Present Engagement-Successful Presentation of a Great Play.ore was an immense house at the Academy of Music last evening to welcome back Madame Sarah Bernlkardt and her company. It is sixteen years since the greatest of the French tragediennes of the present day first visited this city, and the bold she then secured on Mon- trealers is as tenacious to-day, and, in fact, has been strengthened by the visit which she paid Montreal four years ago. There was not a seat vacant, and many bad to put up with standing room when the curtain rose for the first act of the four-act Hindoo trage seed.** Izeyl,"” which is one of the latest additions To the artiste’s repertoire Madame Bernhardt received a hearty pelcome, and the sym- patbies of the ®udience for her were sustained throughout ; she was recall véral times at the end of each ac Thoug h she has been on the stage f more “han thirty years, she is preserved to a wonderful degree, and in fact she looks better now than she ever did.Her voice is as melodious as ever and remains one of the factors of the great power she exercises over her hearers. This drama, written by Armand Sylvestre and Eugene Morand ‘expressly for Madame lern- hardt, hinges on a Hindoo legend and is in verse. It was beautiful mounted, the stage effects being really fine, but the waits between acts were very long and somewhat marred an otherwise successful performance. The minutest attention to detail which characterizes the playing of French artists of the best order was noticeable throughout, and every person was suited to the part assigned, ‘‘Izéyl” is a courtesan, and this character enables her to reveal that charming fascination which is one of her greatest, po powers. The interesting act of the play is the third act, and in this Bernhardt is really great, and last ening she was as powerful as ever.In the bi first act the King “Ecyndia’’ is seon in all his Orienta and after being apprised of the Ha oF life abdicates his t rone and goes into the desert. In the second he is followed by the courtesan, who in a fascinating avène meeks to induce.him to dev- iste from the path he has chosen, but to no pu ‘Tzeyl” returns to her gilded homs in the third act, and there she is called on by “the Prince” who now occupies the throne. He seeks to have her change the new life she has decided upon, but he is killed by her in the attempt. The manner in which she se2ks to conceal his death ‘ when his mother enters the house, and the sub- sequant discovery of the corpse affords her an opportunity for tragic acting which will be remetabered by thoss who have ssen it.It will rank in the minds of those present as one of the great scènes of the stage of the present day.The realistic effect was such that the whole play was lost sight of and the ragedieñne absorbed and rivetted all thet attention upon herself In the fourth act “lgeyl,"” who Las bsen condemned to have her eyes pierced and otherwise tortured, dies, and omyly those a gain as she received an ovation, and bowed her acknowledgments. This play varies very much from Bernhardt’'s well-known re- rtoire, and there is no doubt that “La osca,”’ “Camille” and “Adrienne,” in which she has been seen, will again draw crowded houses.Considerable interest is being manifested in “Gismonda,” her new play, which is to be
