information, I should like to point out that exceedingly cordial relations exist between the Towns of Chateauguay, Chateauguay Centre, Mercier, Lery and Caugh- nawaga; and that in consequence any one of these towns can, at 30 minutes notice, call on the services of 6 fire engines and about 30 men to fight a fire.Al) of these fire engines are in first class condition, well equipped, and the police/firemen of the respective towns regularly receive the training necessary, When major fires occur, past experience has shown that the co-operation between the towns is excellent, You refer frequently to the fire which damaged a certain wrought-iron works here.The Chapgau- guay Centre firemen rggl- ly did not do too badly, 1f you consider , hat TE 45 after the fire, all repairs were done and the place open for business again.The Towns of Chateauguay and Chateauguay Centre respond competently to about 50 fire alarms per year, and this number refers to fires in homes or commercial buildings, In 1967 the Town of Chat- eauguay answered 27 fire alarms with a record of 3 total losses, and 24 losses of a more or less minor nature.Chateauguay Centre had 24 fire alarms, of which 5 were a total loss and 19 of lesser gravity.In so far as the (sic) \u2018\u2018ridiculous insurance rates\u2019\u2019 levied on taxpayers are concerned, be so good as to note the comparison between the rates charged in Chateauguay and those for Montreal.Montreal: 0.54 per $100, for 3 years.Chateauguay: 0.61 per $100, for 3 years.This Is a difference of $7.00 in 3 years on $10,- 000.00 worth of insurance.Let m2 interject here that 2 years ago the rates in Chateauguay dropped 0.07 on $100.00 thanks to improvements in the water pumping system, Perhaps you think our rates ridiculous because they areso low?Before affirming that amalgamation between the two towns would necessarily cure all our ills, take a quick look at Laval, Chambly and other towns which have recently amalgamated.For your information, and even at the risk of repeating what I have already said on two occasions in the Sun; a By-Law was duly drawn up by the two Councils, with proper legal assistance, anticipating amalgamation of the two towns by September 1965.This By-Law was approved unanimously by my Council on 22 June 1965, However, the identical By-law was neither proposed nor presented at a Chateauguay Centre Council meeting at any time, Whether or not the two towns amalgamate, the extent of our territory would require two fire stations, if we adhere to the directives laid down.1 am being conservative when I state that each fire station would have an operating cost of about $250,000.00 per annum, Salaries alone would amount to $162,500.00, plus capital costs, interest, and maintenance of each station.Even if we could reduce costs by creating a separate fire-fighting force, it you persist in your belief that a saving of $2.00 or $3.00 per year on the insurance justifies an annual expenditure of $500,000,00, with 50 tre- men working 50 days a year, then, Sir, the mayors and aldermen don\u2019t add up the same way you do.Of course we deplore all and any deaths caused by fire, letter in the Sun of Fabruary21, 1968, These twogentlemen are not alone in their feelings of the lack of public safety in our community.Last May, agroup of civic minded citizens approached Mayor Laberge and council concerning a volunteer fire department, These mean (12) offered their time, went so far as to supply their own fire - fighting uniforms (valued at $1,000,) and a proposed training schedule, Three of these men are professional fire fighters, Chief of Police, Mr.P.E.Meloche met with us and was most enthusiastic.We then took our plans to Mayor Laberge and council.The City Fathers listened.They were not prepared to answer at this time.A month passed and after many telephone calls we were informed by Mr.Laberge that the proposal had been turned down flatly.Why?We still don\u2019t know, I am in full agreement that this community requires a full fledged fire department.At present in the evenings and early mornings (4 p.m, - 8 a.m,) there are only three (3) policemen on duty on each shift, working a four mile square area, Two policemen in a patrol car and one on the telephone.If in the event a person is being rushed to a hospital by the patrol car, this leaves only one man to cover the telephone.Who then covers the fire trucks?NO ONE! doors are being opened during school hours and the premises unsupervised until the late afternoon arrival of Mr.Davies.On Saturdays and Sundays it is necessary to open the doors, which clearly
